Recently i got my pair of super grills. Wow, i must say, i am impressed! The difference is bigger than i anticipated. Yes, the frequency response got smoother all across (i mean less peaky) and sub-bass more extended, but i feel the biggest difference was to soundstage, imaging and instrument separation. Spent hours yesterday A-B testing against my brothers stock sundaras using chord mojo 2 and OCC 7N pure copper cable. Before the mod the difference between 400se and sundara was quite big, after the mod they sound about even, except sundaras having more treble detail and 400se haveing better low end extension. Even stock 400se has really impressive bang for buck, but with this mod its total steal. They also look way better than original, atleast in my opinion. Highly recommend this mod to all 400se owners, worth every penny. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into developing this mod, i feel like i have a totally new pair of headphones now.
I am really glad you like them - if you have the time, it would be great if you could stick a quick review on the product page as that really helps people decide jfunk.org/wpc/product/3d-printed-hifiman-he400se-super-grills/
I just did the tape mod to my US$90 HE400SE V2 (stealth) and like the results! The tape was sourced from AliEx for US$6.50 : PTFE 300 degree hi temp tape (10M, 0.13mm, 50mm) cut to a dimension of 18.2mm x 45mm, for each side. The PADS have to be removed in order to do this mod. The tape is placed over the outside of each planar magnet with that cut width (of 18.2mm) covering space two and space three from the rear...on each side. To increase brightness...reducing the tape length from 45mm down to 35mm is optional. I also modded the headband with an after-market unit (HiFiMan Ananda-styled) for $30. I used the OEM screws that came with the HE400SE for this simple mod. Much better look and fitment, imho. I also replaced the GRILLS, cut to dimensions with sheet metal clippers: GLOSS BLACK (6x6mm hexagon) 100 x33cm Aluminium Racing Auto-Auto Grill Mesh, sourced from AliEx for US$15. I did use hot glue to position the wires out of the way and at the edges of the cup frame in order to keep the visual through the grill nice and clean. I suppose I could add some nylon mesh...maybe painted with L and R symbols, at a later date. Else use red nylon mesh and blue nylon mesh for the R and L, resp. Switched to the OPENHEART 8 Core Headphone Cable, 1 to 2 jack dual 3.5/4.4mm Balanced Cable Silver Plated Copper Upgrade Replacement, 1.4M length, from AliEx for US$13.50. Lastly, switched up to the ONIX Alpha XL1 DONGLE DAC/AMP, for US$100 on AliEx. EXCEPTIONAL performer!!!! The results...excellent. Very happy with this "CheapAudioMan" solution.
i myself added the grills from HarmonicDyne Zeus into my he4xx, improved sound quality by a mile, more sparkly and accurate soundstage, and oh damn do these look beautiful now.
Just got these today. I can't comment too much about the sound since the my he400se's are pretty new to me (poor baseline). I can say clearly there was an improvement in the bass area. The only suggestion was it was pretty confusing what to do with the wires. Where to tape them down, I got pretty worried I was going to pull them out so I just pushed them to the side and hoped for the best. Maybe a bit more clarification about how to manage that. Otherwise, the bass improvement makes it worth every penny. Excellent work, this is something to be prout of accomplishing!

I've just got mine today. It works for the 2020 HE400i, but it makes the HE6SE V2 a crazy bass monster! It's not bass cannon, but if there's bass and the song calls for it, it delivers. The bass hits like nothing else... I've demoed the Final Audio D8000. It hits harder than that, and that's a TOTL can. Please get one and try it out! Printing it now in wood filament, thanks for putting this together! Question though - how certain are you that the sub bass increase isn't simply being caused by the fabric resting against the magnets now? Have you measured it without the fabric there, and are you still seeing the same results in the sub bass?
Hi Jason, looks great. Will these new grills work with the he400i 2020s? Think they're like a precursor to the he400se...also not great with bass and could do with a boost badly!
@@CustomCans might have to buy a set then! They'll go well with the 400i 2020's all-black aesthetic. When will you have some 3D printed inserts ready to buy?

Wow! I'm very tempted to buy a pair. Do you ship to Brazil (Rio de Janeiro)? I still had a question: what if, in addition to the Super Grill, I put another very thin layer of fabric on the inside of the earcups? Could this subtly lower the highs? It would be the same material as the original fabric/foam, or even thinner. Would it have an effect? I'm thinking about putting it together with the Super Grill (shipped to Brazil, of course). Thank you and congratulations Jason!

Will you sell some that are resin printed for smoothness and I think it looks much better? I'm very interested in a resin printed set of grills for my pair. If not, I'll probably still buy them if I like the price, but smooth resin would be so nice.
I don't think so. These were designed to print on FDM with no supports. @@ericboucher799 I have just seen that Zezuz in the comments on this video has done a decent review / comparison of the sound
@TheHEADPHONEShow Andrew/Resolve I highly highly recommend that you try this. It sounds amazing.
Good to hear you like them. There are not many of these in the wild yet - so we have not had a lot of feedback on them from other people
@Custom Cans I hope Hifiman buys 1000 from you. Their HE400SE is an amazing headphone and this makes them audibly perfect IMO. I just got a pair for my buddy. Well done man.
