This man was a bully at a minimum, maybe worse. I’ve had an experience of a man running towards me in a mall parking lot, screaming at me because i took longer than i wanted to park. He was a very big guy and i was very afraid he was going to attack me. It is such a terrifying experience for women to be confronted like this by men they don’t know, in situations they are vulnerable. Years later i met this man in a mediation community. Laughable i know, but I learned he has a bad temper and over reacts when things don’t go as he’d prefer. What he did to me that day in the mall was the single most frightening experience I’d had in my life to that point and really impacted me tremendously. He was just having a bad day and did that much damage. Any men reading this should really take to hear that this is extremely abusive and very damaging.

Hopefully, you won't get any more visitors in the night that will weird you out and traumatize you. I'm not worried about you though after that happened because I know you're smart enough to remove yourself from a potential bad situation. I'm gonna say that it was someone who had a little too much to drink and thought it would be fun to try and scare you. I know you'll protect yourself and Athena.

Right now, I am in L.A., visiting my elderly mother. I'm in the valley, where I grew up, sadly, and I am in my little homemade camper on my Tacoma. I'm a experienced gypsy but it has been a while.
It is devastating to see how bad it is here with so much homelessness. And it is not as bad as Sacramento, which I went through a couple days ago. It's a pressure cooker out there.
So, I'm driving around looking for a spot last night, because I don't want to stay at my moms house, and it
is hard but I had no problem parking, but I am good at it.
So, choosing a spot is a skill. If you have to move sometimes that is normal. Get there late and leave early.
There is a big difference between travelers and squatters. Property owners are severely under pressure.
    It just sucks.

If someone is acting bizarre they probably are capable of becoming g a nemesis to you and causing you harm. Before you park for the night search for an alternative location just in case you have to relocate. You can always go to a police station and ask to park for the remainder of the night. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Your story sounds like the guy was a local who was sick of "free-loaders" parking up in what they consider their territory. This actually is an unfortunate side of "van life", there are some locals that are really opposed to free campers, especially now we're in a homelessness crisis and people are living and camping in vehicles out of necessity.
I wouldn't do this in the U.S. since the general public are allowed to carry firearms and I think the risk to van dwellers is increased because of that, but I'm from Australia and went around 0z in a van about 6 years ago, I stopped at a "free camp" just outside a small country town that was actually an old sports complex. No one around I thought because all I could see was bushland but I heard male voices and eventually figured out there was some houses behind the tree-line on the hill overlooking the grounds. Didn't think much of it just got into my van doing my own thing, I was relaxing watching a movie about 8pm and had 1 earphone in on low so I could still hear anything outside. At one point thought I heard walking around my van buts sat and listened and it was quiet, then I heard a car slowly driving around and still didn't worry and it left but then about an hour later heard what sounded like a thunder clap and immediately thought it was weird since no rain, got up to look out my pop top window sleeve and heard males laughing and a Ute slowly driving out toward the road, I jumped out the back before they got to the road and yelled out an expletive (this was a point in my life I didn't actually care about my personal safety) and realised they must have a licence for hunting as do a lot of country folk, so it was a gunshot I heard but instinctively knew they were just locals who wanted to scare me outta there. I paid no attention and went to sleep.
They didn't come back again but would I do the same if I were in the U.S.? Maybe, maybe not. As for the bunnies, plenty of kangaroos get hit by cars on the highway here, especially during droughts where they come to find grass at the roadside. It sounds like you're a sensitive person. Nothing wrong with that but life on the road is not for the faint-hearted, it will either toughen you up or break you down.

City camping is all about timing, you kind of just got up figure out what time different people do different things and try just to be out of the way quiet into yourself. Always remember that you have a right to be in the city you are a person you are a citizen there's no reason why you should feel less than because you're rolling around in your van. Freedom of Choice you chose to do this so therefore there's no reason why you should not be free.

This is why I offer to people (depending on who- I have to be safe too) but if it's someone that I don't feel is any threat I offer them my driveway or my yard (it's legal we own. I can put an RV or Camper in my yard. Bc of how my driveway is it's not a problem anyway- I've offered it. To a few people and I feel like they think maybe me and my husband are like trying lure them. lol (not funny. But so not us. We've faced homelessness, so we just try to do what we can for people in "alternative living situations" we even offered shower etc. expecting nothing, simply trying to be helpful. Oh definitely not yelling at someone!!!! Anyhow! I guess being diligent on both parties ends is smart. So I'd now prefer someone do any kind of background check and that way they'd be more secure. We have camera up- with subscription so it's saved. We only want to help when we can like I said. And wouldn't ever chase someone away unless they're like breaking bad in front of my house- I draw the line there- and dead animals - yeah I'd by hypersensitive to that. It would be traumatizing for me. I've seen things from a distance and I'm old enough to be your mom probably but I don't care i cover my eyes and yell. And my husband tells me when we past it!!!!
Anyhow yeah- we have space. Someone can come and go as they please. Think of it as your spot while there. If it can help anyone then that's all I'm trying to. Same reason I give the same guy who stands on this one corner on my way to the docs every time I go. He's there and I give him 2 bucks.
Everyone's up against it one way or another.
    Stay safe.

How do you find boondock/remote/off grid areas?

  • @AugustusOmega

Some truck drivers are all hopped up on pills, you should take the rego and report the incident to police, that clown is looking for easy victims and you could have had him removed from the equation. This behavior is drug based. What you described sounds very dangerous.

Was he talking to the other person in the truck or was this directed to you? You said another truck came in

always trust your instinct in those scenarios, my friend. even if you feel like you overreacted after the fact, the risk of being right is too big. plus, fuck that prick. I'm sorry you had to experience it.
sidenote: for a second, I legit thought you were gonna use that lighter to warm the tire rubber 😂
    Anyway, stay safe and badass!
