To complement their performances in Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall, select members of the Vienna Philharmonic led three master classes on February 23, 2017. Participating young artists, alumni of Carnegie Hall’s youth orchestra program, NYO-USA, had the opportunity to perform and work with these world renowned musicians in a one-on-one setting in The Resnick Education Wing. No matter what instrument you play you have got to love Bach.
This guy is a wonderful teacher. I love his approach to this partita. And she plays much better after doing what he says.
itchylois Agree, they were both great examples as teacher and student. She's able to respond with his approach and he's instructions were clear, warm, and supportive.
@@Nymeria0 ok?
I'm a beginner (6 months) and I'm so impressed when someone can keep playing so long without breathing... I just don't understand how, I can't do much in one breath
Circular breathing
Just learn how to Control your air volume and speed . Dont worry , it will Come with time and practice
Its pure economics. Try to reach as much tone with as few air as possible. You can practise that by playing long or slow passages in every key. Starting from mid register and work yourself up and down to the extremes. Try to play the passage as slowly as possible, so you are still able to play it completely without breathing and try to improve your sound. You do that a while and you will see, that it becomes easier to play the whole phrase with good sound.
You'll eventually get used to it and it will be muscle memory when to breath :)
Try breathing gym, it really helps with how much air you can hold and get from one breathe

Too nervous
Being in a master class is nerve-wracking as hell.
She said hi quietly n smiled
I think flute students can learn one basic principle of etiquette from this video. At 5:27 you can see her body language change and her wanting to play again to eagerly show her teacher she can do better. This is a natural thing amongst students but its wiser and more respectful to have a neutral position and body language, respectfully and carefully listen to the teacher and then only when directed started to play again.
Just stfu
yeah it's kinda hard to watch for me
I think she'd act differently if it were a private lesson, lol!
Beautiful tone for the student. Wonderful teaching. How did I get through college and not learn
more about allemande? My bad. Thank you for helping me keep learning.
We're glad to hear that you enjoyed the masterclass, thank you for watching!
He is a really nice and kind teacher, I wish all of my flute teachers were like him.I like my teachers but they could be more supportive. But seriously, I am actually good because of their un supportive words.
This is true, I have found most progress with the teacher that tells me what I'm doing wrong immediately, instead of being nice about it. And then when the teacher says something nice one day, it feels like an achievement, and you feel like you've learned something.
I agree with what you've said niko, my flute teacher has a "forced positivity" about her, but my boxing coach just immediately gives me feedback, which makes it easier for me to understand where I'm at with my improvement. My boxing coach will looks like he's irritated if my jab is sloppy, which to me shows that he cares haha
É a flauta envolvente que meche com a mente, de quem ta presente
He sounds Irish or Scottish. Love his accent.
Sounds German to me
Musician Friendly it says "Vienna Philharmonia" in the title, so i guess he's from Austria
+DerSibbe Not everyone in an orchestra is from where the orchestra is located. The concertmaster of the Berlin philharmonic is from Pittsburgh for example
He's from Switzerland
Not really, though it has a few Hiberno-English qualities
I wish a recording of Dieter Flury playing this piece was available.
It sounds abit static , lacking melodic emphasis and the notes need more resonance and softness. No typewriting staccato needed.
I said 'Step pause turn pause pivot step step' not 'Step pause turn pause pivot step pause!' Oh, shudder!
Simpsons reference FTW
MARAVILLOSA INTERPRETACIÓN. GRACIAS POR PERMITIRME ESCUCHAR ESTOS CELESTIALES SONIDOS.
Very illuminating - I am working on this piece on guitar - it is great to have some performance insight from a great teacher. Thanks for making it available.
bah
Could anybody tell me what did the girl paste on her flute’s lip plate ?I think it might be a anti-slippery facility, could anybody tell me where I could buy it since when I was playing my flute, there always was wet around the lip plate because of the sweat, and the flute became very slippery and very hard to control.
It’s probably a stamp. You’re right; they help to keep from sliding around on the lip plate.
ye tian I've heard of people using a clarinet bite pad
Maybe an engravement
you can buy them online, yamaha sells them. they are called flute lip plate patch.
sigh... that COULD be me in a year bring it on motivation!

I believe in you!
I've been playing since October of 2015!
And I sound amazing!
(Well my teacher likes it...soo)
9 months left. Hows that going??
I'm right there too. Let's do it!
Haylee Cain are you as good as you wanted to be? I am currently in highschool and trying to get into region is a pain in the as$ but I wish for you to get there.
Yooo wya??? You died or what??
A good teacher will look a lot better with a good student. And in this case, both are crazy good. He says something, she immediately reproduces it.
They were both too fast for me. Compared to me they are both professionals.
Driving me nuts when the student tries to play before the teacher can finish his sentence
The teacher is a real master and you can see he lives for the music :)
I'm sure that when that lady sees this video, she will notice her fingers are still working over time, making larger than necessary up and down movements.
Joe Magnets and moving all over the place
If you play allegro than play music with emotions. This fast just playing Alemande was just .... like sightreading
Fantastischer Lehrer...schlimm, dass er selbstverständliche Dinge aus dem Musikunterricht Schülern in einer Meisterklasse beibiegen muss.
Does anyone know what is on her lip plate? Is it tape? Is it to keep it from slipping around...?
to me it just looks like engraving
It's at 11:25... she turns the flute and it looks like a square piece of tape, IDK. It could be an engraving...
my guess is yamaha flute lip plate patch. i use it to prevent my flute become slippery.
is that a gold flute or am i tripping?
It is. 😍😍😍😍
It’s a Powell 10k gold flute
I thing it is a wonderful instrument.
That was so very helpful, thank you!
What level do you need to play this? Is this piece for beginner, intermediate, or advanced? If you study it at school, when do you learn it?
Edit: I’m not a native English speaker, when I wrote this comment the word “piece” didn’t come to my mind, please have mercy
if you just "play" the notes of the piece slowly, it is fairly easy for intermediate students, and somewhat challenging for beginners but they can also do it after some practice. now, if you want to "perform" the piece well with all due respect to the cultural and musical background of the piece.... many famous flutists have published their own performance of this piece, so that gives you an idea of what this piece means to many flutists...
@@fluteteatime I listened to many performances, I really like this piece, that’s why I was curious, thank you very much for the explanation, it was accurate and useful!
@@teresa6387 my favorite piece, too! i love kate clark's performance. practicing this piece helped me(a sloppy hobby flute player😊) cope through some stressful times so it holds some special memories for me...♥
@@fluteteatime I think that’s my favorite performance too!
I hope now you’re better and out of those stressful times… and also maybe able to play this piece! 🌸💕
@@teresa6387 thank you for your kind words♥ yes, things are much better now😊 i continue to practice this piece, but as i am just a hobby flutist, the results are somewhere near unbearable to listen to.... good grace help me😂😂 still, it is very relaxing and fulfilling to practice this piece!♥ maybe in the future i will upload my practice version of this piece on my channel, as an example of how an ignorant hobby flutist can mess up the beauty😂😂😂
The speed is just too fast and aggressive imo. Listen to Kate Clark's rendition. I prefer it much more.
Actually, to say it's not in the same key is half correct and half incorrect. Baroque Flutes play at a different tuning frequency. Considering to today's pitch requirements, the Baroque pitch is low. The piece is in the same key, it's all in the difference of pitch of Baroque and Modern-day pitches. Her tempo was "meh" at best and I think the problem with a lot of young flutists is they don't listen to enough recordings and truly analyze the music. I like my students to listen and be aware of the musical style and structure of the notation. She did have a very nice, fluffy, not overly vibrato-filled tone.
Eggy Noggy
I wish I could have a baroque flute
Also Pahud's rendition is faster than Kate Clark but still masterful and with a pace that you don't run out of breath listening to.
I also think she needs to work on her tone, it lacks clarity.

GRANDE MAESTRO FLURY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Goodness, it is difficult to keep up with him. He is so jittery. Maybe he is ADHD? Beautiful music though.
Matia Sisler He has 20 minutes with a student to give them the most accurate and helpful advice that he can before the next student’s turn. These students are highly capable musicians, and can (hopefully) understand and ingest all of these ideas and concepts as quickly as he describes them. I think the reason for the tempo of the teaching is to give the student as much feedback as possible before their time is up. Or maybe it’s ADHD, I don’t know.

Nice to hear him quote the cello suites
I studied this on flute as a student. Now I am an adult studying a bassoon transcription. Love this piece.
4:19 wow wow he went into cello mode 😁
Amazing teacher and student
danke

"From the beginning we have spoken of the special Viennese qualities, of the way music is made here. The way we make music here is not only a technical ability, but also something that has a lot to do with the soul. The soul does not let itself be separated from the cultural roots that we have here in central Europe. And it also doesn’t allow itself to be separated from gender."
"So if one thinks that the world should function by quota regulations, then it is naturally irritating that we are a group of white skinned male musicians, that perform exclusively the music of white skinned male composers. It is a racist and sexist irritation. I believe one must put it that way. If one establishes superficial egalitarianism, one will lose something very significant. Therefore, I am convinced that it is worth while to accept this racist and sexist irritation, because something produced by a superficial understanding of human rights would not have the same standards."
I wish I knew how to do what you do!
As James Galway says, “keep your fingers close to the keys, you might need to use them”

Very nice master class. Flury is fantastic as always. She has very little music in her. Moves her fingers but there's hardly any music. No music seems to come naturally to her. He tells her not to do something and she does it anyway. So he just starts ignoring the finer points of what he's saying.
O flautista lembra um pouco o Bolnossauro
Nossa, coitado do Dieter Flury
amazing!
She is moving her flute too much , I know we don’t want to be too stiff. He is a very good teacher

kkkkkkkk
What a fucking bad sound, professor?...omg
Igor Kiklevich sound‘s not everything, by far
I'm a flute player too and what i'm listening to is that she plays with a better tone and sound than his teacher and his interventions...That's for sure. He is too much blah blah blah...and he doesn't focus to get a good sound till the minute 17...
I am a flutist myself as well and in my opinion, the teacher is just trying to teach her something. I recognized that her tone is better than the teacher's but this my be because his flute isn't warm or something. He's there to teach her and if you listen closely, you can hear her playing improve after he's told her something. It's a masterclass, not a concert...
was she playing the notes too loud? I feel like she was letting out way too much air and letting her reserves in her lungs run out. That is probably why she keeps gasping for air on rests :o idk
PlayCalialy She’s not gasping; she is just getting as much air as possible in as little time as possible. I also want to point out that flutes require more air than most instruments, and the higher notes notes also require more air. Also, the smaller the room, the louder the sound. Meaning that she needs to play that loud for performances which are probably in much bigger rooms. This would be my best guess.
Girls always breath louder
Dr. Siracha According to who? Genuinely curious, just need a reliable source.
Her fingers still not right at the end of the session.
If she has been playing like that for years it will take time to readjust.
As both a cellist and a flutist I find the 2nd movement tempo too fast, it sounds frantic and out of control. It's not a race. On the cello we have the advantage of bouncing our bow and getting a nice light effect with good resonance. On the flute the note is clipped shorter without much resonance. To compensate you have to have some air between some of the notes where you can to give it that light soft feeling and not come across as a run away train.
Maybe you don't understand the Corrente or Courante: As maestro Flury explained here, the word Corrente means "running fast", so it really is like a race, indeed! That should be its character. Within a Baroque Suite, the Corrente is one of the fastest pieces at all.
Fly your own direction....improvise.
This teacher has a horrible sound
Excellent! Thank you, maestro Dr. Flury!
The student sound much better than the teacher. Just saying...
Ikr? She sounds better lol
Maybe because her flute is warmer because she played the entire piece before he played a note
im not sure if you know the logic of the flute but the instrument gets warmer as you play it and the warmer the flute is the better it sounds so ofc he will sound airy because his flute is not warm

J'aimerais bien être un boucher qui joue comme elle !...
Come on man let the girl play like she does first time . She was enough "killing" !
but she came to the class on her freewill to be get corrections and advice and become better. it would be foolish to deny the whole purpose of the lesson, especially when the student herself is asking for it. that is what masterclass and lessons are for.
That's the whole point. He is the TEACHER and she is the STUDENT. He is helping her and telling her how she can improve🤦♀️
It's a masterclass. In a masterclass, the teacher hast to *teach* his/her student something. She isn't playing in a concert!
Come on, he's too much of a purist. She shouldn't depart from her approach.
