I am a big fan of renting cottages a few hours north of my home in Toronto, Ontario. I seem to prefer a week at a cottage over a big trip to a different country. And one of the main reasons for that is it gives me a chance to completely immerse myself in a book or two for 7 days straight. It's delightful. I'll sit by the dock for hours reading, listening to the sound of the water and the trees. Also, swimming in a lake is one of my favourite things!
an aside but i'd love to see you interview your parents about the interior design/artwork choices of that house, i'm always gagged by how stunning it is😭
I remember reading Middlesex in Paris back in Sept ‘04. A nice compliment to the rainy Paris. & I remember reading The Baron in the Trees in the original Italian in Sicily back in ‘91. It felt very 3-D reading it in the original.
the whip sound when you mentioned your husband was so funny omg what a great video!! I love keeping a commonplace book of what I'm reading/listening to while I travel
Clip-clopping along in a horse and buggy from one end of our Amish Community here in Arthur Illinois to the other was about the extent of my adventures as a child, so I traveled via books for the most part. Exhilarating! You and Oleg are cordially invited to stop by sometime, if you can handle the cultural whiplash. ha I always enjoy your videos!
I too have traveled a lot and always picked up a book or brought a book along. But what I wanted to tell you is had a trip plan for Alaska, which was for a job interview so it was all paid for which was sweet and the book I took. I don’t remember the name, but it was about a man who got attacked by a bear. A real story.
A few books I recall reading in other places: in Iraq, The Epic of Gilgamesh stands out. I attended some poetry readings that brought tears to my eyes and I didn't even understand the language. The voices over there are outstanding for rendering a story moving. In the Yukon I recall reading Robert Service poetry in a hotel room for a few nights. In Italy, I, Claudius comes to mind and having tea boiled on a little camp stove on the Apian Way. In southern France, I got into Dickens in a big way--crazy but it was what I found on the bookshelves of the castle. In Beijing, mostly studying Mandarin-- trying to write those characters was a big fail. In Scotland, reading the history of Findhorn, the eco-community, surfaces as the book I remember most. I carry Marx and Engles around with me everywhere and reread a bit. Mostly, I don't recall what I've read while traveling..Thanks for this trip down memory lane! I love your videos.
I recently saw a chef name his favorite cities as regards to cuisine. New York was number 1. He said even if you just used borough of Queens, New York would be still be number 1 in the world.
It has a lot to do with personal preferences. Some people I know who've immigrated to the US and have lived in New York like the food but don't find their own regional cuisine to be as authentic and delicious as back home. It's a matter of personal taste and how extensively you've traveled around the world. There are far more delicious food places in the world. They're just not as flashy and expensive as New York and tend to be more rooted in their own regional cultures.
BTW I've just read "Don't forget to write" (Sara Goodman Confino) and "August blue" (Deborah Levy) and they are perfect summer read! So different thought 😂
Are there specific stretches of cross-country travel in the US where you don't recognize the area because of how much it's changed? Which places haven't changed all that much? My family did a lot of bordering-states road trips when I was younger. It's strange to be on a road in Alabama that looks identical to the one outside your neighborhood in Georgia.
consider reading books that incorporate food of the places you travel to? As you mentioned you buy a lot of food in your travels. i.e. Fannie flag. MFK Fisher.
Hi, would it be very hard for you to put the list of mentioned books down in the description or the comment box next time? It would be very convenient for some of us viewers:)🙊
I know this is a video on traveling and reading. But I would have loved to know where you travelled around the world during your solo traveling days. I wish you hadn't skipped that part quickly 🥲

No way! My father has some land in southern Illinois. Definitely interested in checking out the Amish Community.
Turquoise on fleeek.
Oh we are *so* early. Such a nice treat to this sunny Saturday afternoon!
Thank you for being here :)
Ana, you could make a Patreon video telling funny stories from your solo travels! I bet the fans would eat that up, girl!
Love the Herzog accent, it's the only way to talk about him.
Best wishes with what you are reading. I hope you get some great stories.
I truly love your brain

Angela Ashes I'd love to read that, seen the film and that was very good 🇮🇪
Alaska is a must see! Anchorage has one of my favorite second hand book stores called Title Wave.

Dudette… your channel has absolutely blown up.

He’s absolutely right! I used to live in Queens and every street is filled with the most amazing food and culture you’ll ever see.

I swear you said WerZog on or about @11:47. Great brain language connection!
That’s a pretty lamp.

Is it me, or did you just block out the 'obscenity' of your bare foot @ 1:04? Parental discretion is advised ⚠
Hehehehe yes, I did! Blockin’ the toes!
@@AnaWallaceJohnson 🤣 stuck out like a red flag🚩Can't miss it!
Omg I wasn’t the only one
Ukraine is indeed a beautiful country, I have relatives there ❤
Have you read The Witching Hour or Cry to Heaven by Anne Rice?

Ana! Please please tell me where do you get your jewellery from. This necklace is stunning!
Thank you! Usually if I’m at my parents, it’s my mother’s jewelry. She’s been collecting for years-I think this is one of her best ones
I would have done a lot more traveling if it weren't for this irritable bowel explosive diarrhea situation.
Agree with Inseparable by Simone de Beauvoir. I was bored completely. One of the worst I read last year.
😁😘👍
You are so fun and have great hair! Are U a sag????
