I was an unfit overweight slob in my Teens, 20s & 30s. I felt old. I started slowly walking and then jogging when I turned 40.
I physically peaked in my upper 40s when I over time became a marathon runner and paid attention to my health. (I had to).
At 65 have never lost being lean & fit. It's the daily habits & thoughts that make you what you are... Peace, Love and Joy to all!

You are a real trooper. Happy birthday and enjoy all the years ahead of you. I say this as a 75 year old male who has spent a good deal of time in the back country of the Sierras and still do. Snow is an extra challenge. Enjoying all your updates.

Hi Julia, Happy Birthday 🎉 Ebbetts Pass is my stomping grounds. A friend would go up there on his motorcycle, a sleeping bag, 6 pack, and a bag of pot. On night he was in his bag cowboy camping and a bear started pushing on him, he froze and covered his head. The bear stopped and he could hear a shredding sound. Then nothing. He waited till light to come out. The bear had ripped the seat on his motorcycle to shreds.
You have accomplished a lot in life for someone who has just turned 33.
We're in a drought here in California. That may be why some people are telling you it's not much of a snow year. Us Californians have been praying for rain and snow and are discouraged that you aren't encountering more.snow. Snow is hard to hike in but we could use more of it. Hike on!

Julia I just did this section over the weekend and there were still a bunch of sketchy snow crossings. As we approached Carson Pass and hit the last two big ones I threw on my spikes for safety. It’s no joke

Wow happy 31st birthday. Your out hiking and I was having babies 8 and 9 at the same age. Loving the landscape and I know I actually said Happy Birthday before on Sams blog but well we can celebrate it twice.

Happy Birthday, Julia! I have been enjoying your channel. I know that you have a ways to go on your PCT hike. You have been doing amazing. We still have lots of snow at elevation in Oregon. Expecting a deluge of rain this weekend. I just returned from dispersed camping near the PCT on SW Washington. Haven’t seen any thru hikers crossing the bridge of the gods yet this year. Have fun. I felt terrible in my 30's I'm 49 now, feel better than ever, I do have injuries that I work around but my over all health and strength has never been better. I am closer to death I know this but in your 40's you should have everything figured out, life's a breeze compared to the uncertainty of my 30s

Counter to the snow is in just a couple weeks those same areas will be infested with mosquitoes. Snow or mosquitoes?

What some people may not appreciate is yes there was low snow "as measured", BUT we had an abnormally cold Spring season and that left a lot more remaining snow than would be normal at the time. Also the weather kept changing drastically so there was a lot of re-freezing of crust over partially melted base.
I distinctly remember when I graduated college and turned 21 when i was heading Sbound on the AT late that year from Maine. I was coming out of a town in southern VA and bought a couple foster's oil cans. My first legal beers, even though I had fakes since I was 13. I don't know, there was this "lodge with MOP special." I had no idea wtf that was. I was below the grits line for the first time in my life. It was a steak with mushrooms onions and peppers. Who knew? Fuck yeah. On the big up out out of town on a resupply, my pack blew up like a bomb. Not only did everything get drenched in beer, but my pack got lighter. One survived, and I enjoyed it. Now, at 47, and many many thousands of miles in life under my foot and brain, I still laugh at my naivete. It was so fun though. Just laugh. We didn't have that gear in '96, or phones or anything, just notes, a few maps and a few trail friends. I wish that it could be that pure as that moment again. But, I laughed it off, and took that lesson well through my life going forward, a celebration with a pop. Laugh it off, and happy birthday. Keep walking in life. Loves. Seriously, it's not about the miles, and it ain't about the views or likes, it's how you take it and it fundamentally changes the way you think about the world. Heady, yes. But, very important. Because a mile is just a day and a week and year. Until you die. So keep walking! And the only trail that you must thru hike is your life. You really obviously touched me on this one and I wish you both the most happiest of lives. I just wish everyone could be trail family in life.

Ahhhhhh so good, being tested to your core. The desert bakes you the Sierras freeze you like a Samurai sword you’re being honed to a very hard sharp edge that cuts through anything but then the cascades, Washington, that’s when you receive Zen, you are the guru on the Mountain top and that’s forever. What a wonderful life your living said the Old Guru to the the New generation of seekers. Don’t forget to sing and dance.

We are absolutely plastered with Snow and Rain up here in the far North. The snow levels in the North Cascade are ridiculous. I think your crew/team/friends might want to investigate MSR snow shoes: expensive, but lightweight and packable. We have everybody's rain this year. It's still raining...

You have remember, that these people that are commenting on no snow are sitting at home, warm, dry, and sitting on their couches 🙄. They don't have a clue on what you are talking about. They have no idea what it feels like to put on frozen shoes and socks. Stay strong. Getting older sucks (I will be 67 this year) and still hiking a week at a time.
Belated Happy Birthday. You are rocking it. Hiking day after day in that terrain is very challenging both physically and mentally and you keep going. Don't listen to all that crap about snow/no snow or whatever.

As a HoaCA (hiker of a certain age) the worst part of aging is the nights. I don't think you are there yet but the nightly visits to the wild become more and more frequent. Still worth it though.
For me, the weight of that collapsible Nalgene is well worth it for such occasions. Especially if it's freezing out there. 48oz capacity + some spare room.
