  • Here's something a little different - a budget daily classic Mustang. Lots of enjoyment, not a crazy budget, plenty fast with a 351 CI V8 and 4 barrel carb.
Andy talks about the vision he had for a very approachable and easy to live with car that didn't cost a fortune to put together.

I would love this car! Like the owner said, it’s nice enough to have fun but not too nice to be scared it’s going to be scratched by wind and dust and the occasional who knows what. I like that he hasn’t gone crazy on the engine either, it’s got enough power to have some fun but it hasn’t broken the bank. The exact kind of car I’d love to have. Thanks Barry for taking us along! Thank the owner again as well.

Let me help you all with the "shop" part. If it's classic mustang repair and it's in TEMPE, Arizona...it's DESSERT CLASSIC MUSTANG more likely than not. Elliot and Bill and the team are AMAZING and currently finishing the coyote swap on my '67 fastback. Ain't quick...ain't cheap...but no one better.

i’m 13 and my grandma just gave me my grandpas 65 mustang. fully restored in the 90’s but there’s a v8 in it and it needs a suspension swap from v6 to v8 suspension and a tune up and it’ll be ready for the road

Barry, that was great 🤩. I really liked the owners ethos of having a usable classic. 👍. It's in real nice condition, without the hassle of being a concourse restoration, neat 👍. Thanks for showing and hope your motor went back together without rattling😃. Best wishes from jolly old England. 🤓Pete 😎

      Thanks Pete!
And yes the motor went together beautifully, smooth and quiet so I’m very happy about that! I realize the cam lobe is a bit rough, so it’s not ideal and won’t last forever… But an added benefit was the mechanic managed to fix a couple oil leaks underneath - the oil pan and oil filter mount gaskets were leaking a bit, just enough to have an annoying drip spot on the driveway, anyway he wanted to drop the oil pan to make sure there was nothing as far as metal remains so I got all that cleaned up and inspected no more oil leak. Quite thankful and thanks for asking!

Super cool daily driver! I have a 65 as well. The one thing that I added to my car, that made the biggest impact, was a $50 "Export Brace". Instead of those under hood standard shock tower to cowl braces, this is a 1 piece unit that ties both shock towers together. It corrects 56 year old shock tower sag. This will make the car feel like it has had a front end alignment, compared to what it is now, & it'll corner so much better. They can be a bear to install, but that's because of that 56 year old shock tower sag. Once it's on there, it's Day 1 Factory Correct again. VERY worth it it to do. A $20 Monte Carlo bar helps as well.

Stright 6 came with 5 lug wheels? Someone must have stared the V8 swap process before he bought it. In that case he got lucky with that and saved a lot of money. I love Springtime Yellow with the tan interior.

This build exemplifies the fact that even 60 years after these car rolled off the assembly line; they can be reborn into whatever fits the owner's imagination and desire. As a daily driver consideration versus the C4 automatic; Tremec has released their new TKX 5-speed transmission; which I am swapping into my 1967 Mustang 289 coupe... mine had the original 4- speed manual transmission "Top Loader"; and while I it took me a few years to finally decide... installing this new transmission will allow effortless cross-country and highway speed cruise range; and enhance the low end torque via its wide gear ratio spread... Again; few automobiles ever sold can boast remaining so relevant, affordable and popular and fun to build and drive 60 years later!

I enjoy classic cars in what ever shape they are in. This Mustang is what I'm shooting for in my current build. I have a 65 coupe with a 302 and the original 3 speed. Working on the body and paint now and hope to make it a daily driver.

Perfect classic car is any that is actually driven and doesn’t sit in like a showroom, that is only driven into a trailer to go do car shows.
One that you can drive and enjoy, I don't see the joy in having a classic car thats in pristine condition, all shined up only to just sit there. Cars are ment to be driven

  • @MrTce58

I agree, what good is the car if you are afraid to take it out? I did the same thing in the 80s when I was a young adult but a little more radical by replacing the original 6 cylinder with a 351 Cleveland that was built to BOSS 351 specs along with 4 speed toplader tranny and ford 9" BTW: Previous owner must of replaced the 13" 4 lug wheels with 14 Inch 5 lug. Converting a 65-66 Mustang to a v8 is more difficult because they do not share the same wheels, suspension and steering components as do the later models. Sure looks nice!

I drive a 1977 Camaro with a 4.1 straight 6 as my daily in the UK - Very original and super reliable as a daily.
I had a similar reason for buying mine - wanted something In very good condition that looks presentable but not a showroom piece. Something that I can hop in and enjoy all year round every day without worrying about the odd scratch or spot of dirt.
The inline 6 isn’t a speed demon but it still sounds awesome and just about keeps up with modern traffic lol

    • @BarryTsGarage
      @BarryTsGarage  3 года назад +3

I agree that disc brakes are generally superior, and I’ll bet they are on Andy’s to-do list. I find that in good weather and not on steep hills, drum brakes set up well do amazingly well. Steep hills, wet, well that’s a different story!
