Back in 2010, i turned 18, i tried being a kogyaru and hime gyaru here in the philippines. The experience was awesome. Since we go to cosplay cons and everyone always mistaken me as an anime character of some sort or just a plain japanese gal 😂🤦🏼♀️ they told me i pulled the look. And now that I am married and have kids. I wanna be onee-gyaru. 😩💜
I'm happy that gyaru topic is popular nowadays, anyway, here's my good recomendation for a gyaru manga : "Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo suru" It's a story about a gyaru who enjoy cosplaying and befriend her lone clasmate boy who's really good at sewing and designing authentic japanese doll
i actually identify with gyaru at an almost extreme level, when u said ''because to them dressing gyaru is a part of their identity'', this is fully true, when i tell u i feel like im betraying my subculture by not constantly looking my best, its completely true lmfao i feel like a traitor to my kind
I found this video because I wanted some reference on the gyaru fashion, because I somehow really really love this style - maybe because it's kind of like a opposite to the pastel gothic style I identify with? In any case I am really happy that the gyaru subculture became more prominent in media, without it I wouldn't have discovered Mika Jougasaki, an idol from Idolmaster Cinderella Girls, who captured my heart in an instant. I really like it that gyarus are so social and outgoing, yet very kind and often very sweet and passionate. They seem to be always so positive and have fun, I really admire their confidence. I feel like this subculture helps me find my confidence to dress like I want someday, even though I don't see myself as Gal. This was the first video I saw of you and it was very informative, well explained and good paced so you could follow along easily. It made me happy that you showed so many pictures so one could really get a gist on what their style is and what to search for in anime. It was also fun edited and I can't wait to watch more videos of you!
I initially found you (and subscribed) when I was doing some research on the Japanese delinquent type girls for a little character design contest I was working on, and I noticed how little I actually knew about them apart from what I had learned through Zombieland Saga's Saki Nikaido and Fruits Basket's Arisa Uotani. And just when I was thinking "Huh, I wonder what she's up to. I haven't seen any vid since", you post a video in the same week about one of my favourite sub-cultures. It's a good video, as - just like you pointed out - many people just take them at face-value and judge them on stereotypes that are - more often than not - based on nothing, and not many people take the time to deconfirm their bias. I am happy to see a good explanation of what gyaru are actually about and that it's just a fashion/lifestyle choice and not "dumb blonde bimbos who have nothing better to do with their life". I love gyaru and gyaru characters. They're fun to draw, they're fun to design and they're fun to write, with a lot of opportunities to subvert expectations. Visually, the extreme styles, like Manba, kind of turn me away, but I like the sub-culture in general. Probably because they're exactly what I'm not and hanging out with them would teach me a lot. I'm not fashionable or hyper-social, and admittedly a little passive. I respect them a lot for being a little rebellious in the - in a lot of ways - still very traditional Japan, by living in the moment, just wanting to have fun and being semi-individualistic. Also, I wonder what your thoughts are on this. I may be wrong, but it looks like there is a resurgence of gyaru in popular anime and manga. It feels like they've been taken the back seat for a while, and while they're still not always the main character, they seem to appear more in contemporary titles, even in larger roles. I mean, you already mentioned a chunk of them, but there's Rumiko Manbagi from the insanely popular Komi-san wa Komyushou Desu, Hayase Nagatoro and her friends from Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san!, Yuzu Aihara from Citrus, the gyaru-focused Hajimete no Gal, Gal Gohan (I really want JC Staff to adapt this one, seeing as what they can do with Shokugeki no Soma), Oshiete! Gyaruko-chan, Yancha Gal no Anjou-san, and many more, all released (or at least still running) in the second half of the 2010s. Is it just wishful thinking, a result of there just being waaay more manga, or is there actually a renewed appreciation of gyaru characters in anime and manga? What do you think?
Wow thanks so much for the thoughtful comment. I really agree with you that gyaru are a bit rebellious - they're really a kind of counter culture for Japan... but not in the same way delinquents are. Actually, I've wanted to do a video talking about how these subcultures are similar but also different. As for your question about the resurgence - it is interesting you mention it because I also notice that more manga have been featuring gyaru characters. They almost feel trendy in a way? I don't mean that as a bad thing though because I'm happy to see more gyaru in media. Egg, one of the most famous gyaru magazines in Japan, stopped being made in 2014... but in 2019, it came back as an online magazine. Egg also has a really successful RUclips channel, so it shows there is still a lot of interest in gyaru in Japan and that bleeds into anime and manga I think. Also the Super Gals! manga is being continued again after more than 15 years!! So yeah, gyaru seems to be trying to creep back into the spotlight and I think we'll continue to see more gyaru characters created. I kind of doubt it will ever be the same as when gyaru was mainstream, but who knows~!
@@MishaMishaMatic That would be an interesting video, because I don't think many people have put them together like that. (Well, maybe the manga Rokudou no Onna-Tachi kind of did, but only as "bad girls".) It is an interesting angle to pick, because when you look at them in the light of traditional Japanese culture and the role of the woman in there, they both kick against that stereotype in their own way. To put it bluntly and with somewhat old-fashioned gender roles, the gyaru seem to hyper-feminize themselves, drawing a lot of inspiration from outside Japan and being more flashy rather than the traditional serenity, while the delinquent girls seem to kick against that tradition by adapting a more masculine - though not fully - approach of rebellion. But that's just something that popped into my mind when you said that. I'm really curious about what other similarities (and differences) will turn up in your research. I'm looking forward to that video, as well. I can tell from these videos that you really enjoy making them. I am very happy to hear that it's just not me and that there indeed seem to be more manga gyaru and gyaru manga. Especially when such big publications return after some time, I think it is safer to say that there's a resurgence of gyaru culture, or at least the interest thereof. I wonder what brought that about. I can think of a couple of potential reasons, but I must admit that, while being very interested in Japanese culture, I don't know everything and that the trends I see may just be a result of me looking at it from a very western perspective. In any case, I'll just be happy that I get to see more cute and cool gyaru. Meanwhile, I'll just try to figure out whether my own concept for a story involving a gyaru works best as a webcomic or a web novel.
I'm interested in subcultures in general, especially when they try to mess with the moral compass and subvert expectations. smart or dumb, gyaru have been helpful in changing the status quo
This video is actually very informative. Thank you very much for making this analysis. 💖✨ As someone who dresses in gyaru style, you nailed every fact about the gyaru subculture to a tea.
ahh! I'm so happy to hear that!! It's seriously cool to me to hear that someone who wears gyaru style watched this video!! I love gyaru fashion and have worn it occasionally, mostly Liz Lisa and himekaji cutesy stuff... I wear lolita fashion much, much more though. I love j-fashion in general and am very interested in it.
I´ve always been fascinated by the gyaru sub-culture, I think the aesthetic and fashion is so cute, fun and so over the top that I can´t help but love it, it´s really interesting how one of the reasons it was born was the desire to go against traditional japanese beauty standrads (stuff like the idea of the Yamato Nadeshiko). In fact, I like it so much that at some point when I was a teen I wanted to become a gyaruo (basically the male version of a gyaru) but couldn´t do it because it´s basically imposible to pull off that kind of male fashion in my country.
"Do they still dress like this?" Man they still have guys with Rockabilly Pompadours out there. ... April Fool's 2021: Do a sequel to this, but about Juggalos...
Finally!!! Someone who also loved and remembered Super Gals! My sister and I loved this anime growing up! And I was always interested in Gyaru culture. But this was middle school, where I relied on my parents for money, and the Emo/Scene movement was more in fashion or cool and hardly anyone I knew had any idea what I was talking about. Also, I was undergoing the dreaded, “I’m not like other girls”
I heard about Hachiko because of Chouchou from One Piece, but I didn't know Hachiko was popular enough to have a popular statue in the middle of Shibuya, wow! Also thanks for the subculture deep dive!
I will never stop being interested in Japanese culture so these informative videos are really addicting. Edit: 12:52 HOLY SHIT IS THAT THE COOKIE MONSTER!?

Gals! Is one of my favorites! I had all 10 tankoban. I discovered it back in 2006 and totally fell in love with the gal style and lifestyle. It was so different from anything I’d seen at the time. as a shy person it really inspired me to break out of my shell.
Thanks for fleshing out this topic I was unsure of the term. Makes me think of 80s clash style with a punk attitude, ie the California girl look. I think this form of self expression is refreshing. It's almost better now that it's not as popular because part of the entire idea is to be who you want to be and to be yourself. (Not necessarily contradictory terms)
FUXK i was like "oh well it's been a year i bet she already made the gyaru media recommendation videos" and then i check and this has been her latest video
Oooo, I didn't expect to see an initial D reference. But now, it makes sense why one of the songs I have in my Eurobeat playlist has the lyrics "Para para" in it. I realised I normally miss Gyaru in anime or don't notice them as much, but now it's rather obvious when I think back about it. Edit: I just wanted to know more about the subculture because it kept coming up in conversation.
I love Gal characters there the best also it's so weird seeing the cultural differences between Japan and America. Are Gyaru inspired by American fashion? Cause what they're wearing is completely normal here in the U.S the hair, nails, clothing, makeup n all
I used to have a lot of traits of a gyaru when I was younger and then I moved onto a more alternative style and after watching Oshiete Gyaruko-Chan I realised I still carry some of those traits. I think I’ll just combine it lol.
I really liked how extensively you talked about 109 hot girls, thats how we call gal in Taiwan, I like fashion, and recently came across your video, as well as other intetesting looks like yami or yumei kawaii. Thanks.
They more or less the glamour girls of Japan and I love all of the good parts of Galko Chan because that are the considered the positive traits and sometimes she reminds of some of my cousins who are glamour girls and I can say they are very creative, p.s I love Galko Chan she's one favorite Gal anime characters.
The first time I've known about gyaru is in j-dramas, but never really notice them in anime. The only one I can think of on the top of my head is Angol Mois. They're quite rare in anime tbh. Btw my favorite gyaru manga is Switch Girl >
12:04 I'm not sure I want to know what you searched to get that Sonic Yes pillow picture. Given the Delinquent Anime Girl Guide and this video, I think I'm starting to notice a pattern.
@@MishaMishaMatic I'll be taking bets as to whether or not you show up in the next video with a spray tan. I figured the yes pillow thing was like the pregnancy test meme going on a while back.
Hi i arrived here by a sugestion youtube made after i saw a video of Garu in 2021 i used to like Gals! Manga so i clicked into your tumbnail. I still like Gals
5:29 Funny looking at that list of comparative stereotypes. It's interesting, because both the positives and the negatives are pretty much saying the same thing, but it's a matter of perspective. It's kind of interesting, some of gyaru on extreme ends look garish too me, but overall they seem like really cool people. Great video, I also saw your video on Yanki girls. If you ever come back, it'd be cool to see some more stuff like this video and that one.
It's funny that in most mainstream manga/anime Gyarus are depicted as fun, sociable people with a very few exceptions (eg: Life by Keiko Suenobu has a notorious Gyaru bully clique, or the bullies from "Hoshino, Me o Tsubutte" around 8:18 in the video) However in Doujins they are almost always used negative characters: being bullies or bitches. Quite a contrast.
I was like a big fan of super gals the anime show is I was 17. My cousin bought a DVD sets of volume 1 to 3 when we throw her a going away party in college at my aunt and uncle's house. It was a lot of fun.
I'm just curious because I see Gal in anime but sometimes I see them as bullies or as good people but after seeing a Dark Manga about a girl who is a book worm changed her look to bee popular in Highschool but then after she got addicted to drugs she changed her self by changing her hair blond, her wight skin to tan skin, covered in tattoos, then wasting herself and got pregnant and the end, it didn't when so good for her. Like I just wanted to know what is really gal, I have also seen like two Gal Asian girls who I just didn't pay attention to their looks after the last three years in college, now I'm just getting worried for them after realizing it.
i believe you're talking about the infamous manga "metamorphosis" (also known as "henshin" or "emergence"). the girl in it did bleach her hair and get a tan, but it was only so that she would be more appealing to men. i don't believe she or anyone else in the story called herself a gyaru, and she was never a part of the gyaru culture/lifestyle. so, just because a japanese girl is tan and blonde, doesn't mean she is automatically a gyaru. and like worst waifu said, gyarus don't typically date people for money or are prostitutes. i hope this helped!
The group, which looks extremely strange, resembles the way the roots of a plant trapped in a flowerpot get tangled up in a complicated way with nowhere to go.
Thanks for the video. At the beginning you mentioned several gyaru variants. But the only variant that got a mention was mamba. Perhaps you would make another video that covers that? In any case, thanks for your hard work.
Very interesting, so it means that the character Marin from the anime My Dress-up Darling would be a Gyaru?, I ask that, because I saw the image of the manga in the video.
I wouldn't be a fan of gyaru irl but I love those types of characters in anime. Gyaruko-chan is one of my favorite manga. I know it sounds wrong, but when Kenya Suzuka went to prison; all I could think was "is he going to be able to continue his work in prison"?
I wouldn't say that Gyauro-ko is "hardcore" because she doesn't have tan or white make-up like other more extreme gyaru (mamba). I honestly don't like her bc she's obviously made for a male audience, like most anime girls.
I love gyaru and there bery cute and toony. I also remember from rebis dungeon(which is nsfw, but that isnt why i am here). I adore there style and fashion. Hope they can be the vibe for vaporwave or outrun genre
If I remember correctly, doesn't ko mean girl or young girl? :? Like... I think Poniko in Yume Nikki is just her fan name and it means "Pony-tail Girl". :p
i believe it means child but it can be translated differently depending on context. of ko is used in reference to a young girl, I think it can mean "young girl"
-ko is also a really common end for girl's names in Japan. It's like adding -a at the end of western names to make them feminine (Kyo and Kyoko is like Paul and Paula). So a lot of time unnamed girl characters will be given a punny nickname with -ko at the end (another main character in Galko-chan goes by Otako, because she is an "otaku girl").
I personally find his actions as inexcusable as his light sentence, but I firmly believe in separating the art from the artist. That's why I can love the music of artists like Paddy Tarletan and Byron de la Vandal despite them being white supremacists. To me good art is good art.
@@MishaMishaMatic That's understandable, you are a busy lady and we all love and hopefully respect you the same as I do. Just take it easy and and we will look forward to your next video.

Great video! I’m always explaining what gyaru are to my friends and you broke things down very clearly. Thanks!
12:04 I'm not sure I want to know what you searched to get that Sonic Yes pillow picture. Given the Delinquent Anime Girl Guide and this video, I think I'm starting to notice a pattern.
jfskdf haha you noticed I used it twice!! It's some old anime meme I liked... the 'yes' pillow meme.
I utterly surprised by this style ,
Quite Fawn of gyaru
It's funny that in most mainstream manga/anime Gyarus are depicted as fun, sociable people with a very few exceptions (eg: Life by Keiko Suenobu has a notorious Gyaru bully clique, or the bullies from "Hoshino, Me o Tsubutte" around 8:18 in the video)
However in Doujins they are almost always used negative characters: being bullies or bitches.
Quite a contrast.
great video, keep up the good work!
ahhh! Thank you!! I will do my best!!
I just wanted to create a gyaru OC
I just stared reading Super Gals and then this video was recommended :)
I was like a big fan of super gals the anime show is I was 17. My cousin bought a DVD sets of volume 1 to 3 when we throw her a going away party in college at my aunt and uncle's house. It was a lot of fun.
Gyaru are not just simply girls with tans/fake tans, some simply color their hair but their skin is the same
damn random anime girl where u gone 🥲🥲
I honestly love the gyaru style. I think it’s very unique and cute.
I've always loved gyaru! It was what inspired me to get into lolita!
What are your thoughts on the hentai "imaizumi's house is a place for gals to gather "? A gyaru harem doujin basically.
This was a worryingly educational video I didn't even know I wanted to watch
I LOVE SUPER GAL
The group, which looks extremely strange, resembles the way the roots of a plant trapped in a flowerpot get tangled up in a complicated way with nowhere to go.
I'd love to dress in a himegyaru style, but I'd probably give up after the hair alone lol
I'm here because you're awesome and it's great to see you geeking out on video again! :)
ayeeee - can you see the sparkle in my eyes when I discuss these 2d goddesses. I have issues. sakjdffsld. But seriously!! Thank you!!
YEP SHE IS A GYARU
Something something something , thanks for the video i enjoyed it. well done! Gambatte.
this is super helpful and thorough!! ♡♡ thank u for this video!
Thank you, that was very informative and educational
I wouldn't be a fan of gyaru irl but I love those types of characters in anime. Gyaruko-chan is one of my favorite manga. I know it sounds wrong, but when Kenya Suzuka went to prison; all I could think was "is he going to be able to continue his work in prison"?
Good video, there is some gyaru in durarara too.
I wouldn't say that Gyauro-ko is "hardcore" because she doesn't have tan or white make-up like other more extreme gyaru (mamba). I honestly don't like her bc she's obviously made for a male audience, like most anime girls.
She does have tan skin at one point.
Thank you, very informative. I like your charming presentation.
Aw thanks so much!! I really want to aim to make fun informative videos ~
* thinks about pink b club, minako's room, and gyaru talk *
So this is what it was o.O
I love gyaru girls!!! 😍
Oh, yeah, I remember Gal Cleaning... O_O
Sorry for bringing up the dark past.........
5:19 ah yes this is how my classmates would describe me 💀(besides the last point)
Great video!!!
Thank you !! Glad you liked it!
Whoa thanks :D very informative
Ai from Nijigasaki School Idol Club is an idol Kogyaru !!
this video is soooo cool! happily subscribed ♥
I loved this video and i dont think you wanna look up galko chans creator
Why?
@@Dantheferrethe had real child porn and he was barely punished for it. Not only that but fans actually forgave him
I personally find his actions as inexcusable as his light sentence, but I firmly believe in separating the art from the artist. That's why I can love the music of artists like Paddy Tarletan and Byron de la Vandal despite them being white supremacists. To me good art is good art.
Junko is despair gyaru
Really cool video! Hey how about a Gyaru-O video?
Theres not much material in the topic specially now a days u_u
I love your content. If you have more time I would love to see more videos.
Thank you so much!! I do plan on making more videos... Sadly I've been really busy.. but thanks for the motivation!! I'll do my best.
@@MishaMishaMatic gracious mademoiselle
@@MishaMishaMatic That's understandable, you are a busy lady and we all love and hopefully respect you the same as I do. Just take it easy and and we will look forward to your next video.
comparing gyaru to vsco girl is illegal
good video, and i love the misato profile pic
Jesus I'd completely forgotten about Gal Cleaning.
"Oh, you're pulling the plug at chapter 10? Buckle up, chucklefucks."
-Ramunemura, probably
Keep doing more videos please!
I WILL!! This kinda comment is very motivating. I'll be sure to keep at it. 🙏
Gyaruko does get a tan at one point.
It makes me endlessly sad that getting a tan alone is considered controversial
Im just here because I love Super Gals(GALS)...
Can you ever consider making an iceberg video
Can you talk about lolita girls next? Probably tomboys, or femboys?
I was wondering i read a manga book on this. So thanks. And 10 minutes ago I asks a question about new fruits basket anime i will be very grateful if you or someone can answer my question.
This pretty much reminds me of black girl styles. 😃
Big Fan of your channel☆☆☆☆☆very interesting
Thank you so much!! I hope to make more videos soon!!
Another great anime is Hime Gal Paradise!
you know you are cultured if you know the train wreck that is gal cleaning.
Worst waifu + gyaru waifu = Something we didn't expect but love!
I am here to surprise and amuse you. ajsdfhsd haha kidding thank you!!
