Been playing 46 years. Plenty of things I can't play, physically, but it's rare for me to learn new concepts from a RUclipsr. I've watched 5 of your videos and learned a lot!
I have hoped that a perspective like this existed. This is a real watershed moment for guitar instruction/music theory/improvisation on RUclips. So clear, concise, and funny. Incredible!
Ah man your metaphors and jokes crack me up every time. Not very usual to happen for me watching these other youtube educators... and of course the content ... you're a gold mine mando
MARBIN, When ending a phrase on the 2nd, 4th or 6th this is called "Color Expansions", which Santana does more often. I can't think of another Rock guitarist that end phrases on the 2nd, 4th or 6th. I have also notice Santana uses the out of key half-step BELOW "grace notes" and Jeff Beck uses keyboard "pitch wheel grace notes". You should do a lesson about Color Expansions. Blues Tonality will often use these " rubbed notes" which aren't in the key that are rubbing against the chord tones in the key, which you should do a lesson about the theory about rubbed notes used in blues because Clapton Cream era live albums did this a lot to have the dissonance. Metallica Riffs are based on an ABAC or AAAB phrasing its the same riff but only the tail/ending notes are different which is phrasing 101 that you can make a lesson about phrasing structures in rock music.
This is the most cohesive lesson on the language of musical phrasing I have seen. Amazing work!!! And the comedy is so engaging @7:15 "Diddy Party!" Lmao. I would bet my house that you and the production crew grew up on Paul Gilbert's instructional videos 🤘 I hope he sees your videos because I'm sure he would appreciate them.
I really love this lesson, I watched the video 15 times so far! is it possibile to have more lessons on this topic? I joined the Marbin Patreon and I really enjoy it, thank you Dani!
Dani you are hands down the best and funniest teacher bar none. Is that your girlfriend...in the freezer!!! I literally laughed out loud. When I get my next job and have cash I will buy into what you are dealing. When are you guys coming back to play NYC???
Wow! It seems like such obvious ideas, and yet nobody ever told me ^^ Nor was I able to come up with it myself. But it all clicks now, it's sure to be very helpful for my writing and improvising. Also, it was quite funny. Great lesson!
@@josiahmanganyi6917 Being intuitive is cool. But at one point you might end up playing the same notes over and over (out of muscle memory), or chaotic melodies that scares your audience into throwing objects at you. It's therefore a good idea to at least practice consciously in order to expend musical vocabulary; learning new concepts doesn't make what comes out of your improv' "less yours".
"if you've ever been in a relationship with a woman, you know how it feels to have the same question asked a lot of time" Word. I'll think of my wife (and have a laugh) everytime I land on the 9th now.
God damn it dude I gotta stop watching your videos at work, I had my volume turned up for "Let's edge together!" and I stg I lost a few years of my life. ❤
Thank you, Dani! Isn’t rhythmic placement within the bar and landing with target notes on beats 1 & 3 also an important part of phrasing? I tried to read Hal Galper’s Forward Motion book but I didn’t fully understand how to apply it.
When building tension in our solos is it important to avoid the root at the end of phrases, or should it be avoided throughout the entire solo until we are ready to reach the final resolution?
Buddy has the toughest job in this video- trying to explain how to make music sound pleasing to listeners to an audience of gearheads whose primary musical goal is to out-shred and impress other guitarists. Many things can be taught, but most of this phrasing is natural tendencies…
in order to not fall fall into post root clarity too soon you can use this great way to improvise on the D dorian ruclips.net/video/3_ReOXjeCCI/видео.html isn't it Dani? ;) following the first part of that video I am able to skip the root very easily
What was sexist? Sexual jokes, yes, but I didn’t get sexism, which has to do with the denegration of one sex vs another. Sometimes sexual jokes are sexist, but I didn’t sense that here. Maybe I missed something.
Quite interesting but gosh... you all prog-rock-fusion-something guitarists, I'm sorry but pleeeeaaaase switch off your awful delays that last forever like you're all in the same plastic cathedral :'(

I might even have something to say when I play now!
Thank you for not gatekeeping your knowledge. You are a true master
You are an incredible teacher and your analogies crack me up!
One of the best lessons I've ever seen on youtube, the analogies are so clear!
Glad you think so!
I concur Doctor!!!
Ah man your metaphors and jokes crack me up every time. Not very usual to happen for me watching these other youtube educators... and of course the content ... you're a gold mine mando
Goddamit, thats the best theory lesson I heard in a long long time! Thank you man!
Gotta make sure you create that dialogue.....lol. A little comic relief while you get schooled is always good,
Always pleased with your eloquence and the organizational structure of your lesson. Right on point. And funny at times too.
Wow Marbin, this video is awesome, so much information and clarity on what you’re actually “saying” when you play. Thanks so much
incredible video, invaluable information. also had me cracking up. great to see you vibin on youtube. you and your editor have great comedic timing
one of the best guitar lessons i've ever come across, this is the 3rd time watching it
One of your best Danny!!!
My man! You’ve helped my playing more than anything. Will forever be grateful🙏 I hope you bever stop doing these
The comedy is almost the best part of the lesson. 👍🏻👍🏻

+1
Really dig how you impart your knowledge and demonstrate concepts - thank you!
Incredible lesson

Thanks Dani for explaining stuff in a way that is so on point!
Thanks John, that's very kind of you
There are as many great one liners in this video as there are musical phrases. I think I laughed as much as I listened.
Excellent stuff that nobody else is doing!
Thanks
Great way to show this concept.
I am going to watch this until I understand it.. Thank you!
These are great insights. Thanks for sharing. I get a kick out of your humor, too!
Brilliant explanation - I can use this. So practical. Thank you!!!
Dude, such great analogies! Love it
Great stuff! I’d love to see the exact same approach but using rhythm instead of intervals.
Thanks, this is a great lesson!

Thank you, Dani!! I hit the roots too often when soloing.
We are all affected by premature root resolution at one point or another
@@marbinmusic And there is no pill for that... lol
‘…you can get away with shit like that.’ LMAO! 🤣 👍🏽✌🏽
Wow! It seems like such obvious ideas, and yet nobody ever told me ^^ Nor was I able to come up with it myself. But it all clicks now, it's sure to be very helpful for my writing and improvising. Also, it was quite funny. Great lesson!
Thanks Safir!
For me improvisation means playing randomly without thinking and creating your own music!
To me improvisation means Playing randomly!

GREAT lesson. Would be a nice follow up to discuss how timing and rhythm are used to tell great stories.
You do know that since this video is so freaking good, you now need to make one for each mode? 🧨😎🔥
I was just about to search how to use chord tones and when to use them in lead lines... thank you!
Brilliantly and concisely said. Bravo
Great stuff!
i love your videos marbin, you are a great teacher man...
This is No Root November
Stay strong brother
4.40 reminded me of Santana. Great info, thanks.
Best lesson I’ve seen
Never write a love song without post-root clarity
Truer words have never been spoken
"if you've ever been in a relationship with a woman, you know how it feels to have the same question asked a lot of time"
Word.
I'll think of my wife (and have a laugh) everytime I land on the 9th now.
This.
Wow this is great, the analogies are perfect
You are perfect ♥️
So good I actually liked and subscribed
Who knew kegel exercises would also improve my guitar playing.
You are such a great player and teacher. Scott Henderson 2.0
Excellent lesson
Glad you dig it Chris!
Youy are amazing,thank you
Superb information 😎
This is a great lesson and explanation
Glad you liked it John 👍
Thank you for this video, I needed that. Can you do the same for the rest of the modes?
Damn that reverb sounds like space
Post root clarity-sounds like something my Aussie buddy once told me
very nice lesson

Dark, sarcastic, ironic humour with a bit of profanity is exactly what's missing from most music pedagogy.
You da man 🎸
This dude is amazing
You're amazing 😩
Awesome stuff..
Great ❤
I got a male enhancement ad, just prior to you talking about edging 😂
@derekschafe. I got an ad from an erectlie disfunction company when he was talking about post root clarity.
Top-notch info. Thanks. But does this only work over one chord - the Dorian root? What about chord progressions in Dorian, or other modes?
Sick!
Thanks Francesco!
This was literally so fucking eye opening dude shit
Awesome
5:26 LOL!
This is great man, thanks!
** Heads up though, hiding your mic in your shirt means you are getting constant rustling on your voice audio.
Another brilliant vid bout music, and funny as fuck, love it! cheers man 🍻
Foooooking legend

lol @ post root clarity!
❤❤❤
This is some good shit
cool
would it be weird too ask for a similar video in different modes, too?
When building tension in our solos is it important to avoid the root at the end of phrases, or should it be avoided throughout the entire solo until we are ready to reach the final resolution?
It's a personal decision, but it should be handled with care as it's a very final sound.
Where can I find the backing track used?
Nice lesson. My wife must be a major second.
👌
👈😎👉🙌🏼
"post root clarity" 💀
Diddy party!
Is that Terrence McKenna on the thumbnail? If not, well it looks like him. McKenna is a “wordsmith”….Marbin is a “fretsmith”.
I have an inside source that says it might be Stanley Kubrick...
Remove the paper wrap from that mic
daddy party 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
You're funny as shit. Great videos keep it up
what if I have 24 chords in a song like in jazz,
A HAAAAA!!!!!!
Premature perspicuity?
7:59 i busted
5:25 lol

The nagging woman 2, better than any ear training. Impossible to forget the sound of that now.

I could have done without the sexism, but nice lesson 🤣
Btw, I dont like to use the majord 3rd because it feels like i'm changing mode
The world could do without sexism, but here we are, in reality. The major 3rd is a spicy note for sure. Thanks for watching!
