I have hoped that a perspective like this existed. This is a real watershed moment for guitar instruction/music theory/improvisation on RUclips. So clear, concise, and funny. Incredible!
"if you've ever been in a relationship with a woman, you know how it feels to have the same question asked a lot of time" Word. I'll think of my wife (and have a laugh) everytime I land on the 9th now.
MARBIN, When ending a phrase on the 2nd, 4th or 6th this is called "Color Expansions", which Santana does more often. I can't think of another Rock guitarist that end phrases on the 2nd, 4th or 6th. I have also notice Santana uses the out of key half-step BELOW "grace notes" and Jeff Beck uses keyboard "pitch wheel grace notes". You should do a lesson about Color Expansions. Blues Tonality will often use these " rubbed notes" which aren't in the key that are rubbing against the chord tones in the key, which you should do a lesson about the theory about rubbed notes used in blues because Clapton Cream era live albums did this a lot to have the dissonance. Metallica Riffs are based on an ABAC or AAAB phrasing its the same riff but only the tail/ending notes are different which is phrasing 101 that you can make a lesson about phrasing structures in rock music.
Wow! It seems like such obvious ideas, and yet nobody ever told me ^^ Nor was I able to come up with it myself. But it all clicks now, it's sure to be very helpful for my writing and improvising. Also, it was quite funny. Great lesson!
God damn it dude I gotta stop watching your videos at work, I had my volume turned up for "Let's edge together!" and I stg I lost a few years of my life. ❤
When building tension in our solos is it important to avoid the root at the end of phrases, or should it be avoided throughout the entire solo until we are ready to reach the final resolution?
Thank you, Dani! Isn’t rhythmic placement within the bar and landing with target notes on beats 1 & 3 also an important part of phrasing? I tried to read Hal Galper’s Forward Motion book but I didn’t fully understand how to apply it.
Buddy has the toughest job in this video- trying to explain how to make music sound pleasing to listeners to an audience of gearheads whose primary musical goal is to out-shred and impress other guitarists. Many things can be taught, but most of this phrasing is natural tendencies…

I might even have something to say when I play now!
"you have a very limited amount of time before the people you are talking to starts to thinking you are an idiot" hahaha, great, you made my day.
These are great insights. Thanks for sharing. I get a kick out of your humor, too!
Fantastic video, fantastic aspects

Goddamit, thats the best theory lesson I heard in a long long time! Thank you man!
Wow Marbin, this video is awesome, so much information and clarity on what you’re actually “saying” when you play. Thanks so much
"if you've ever been in a relationship with a woman, you know how it feels to have the same question asked a lot of time"
Word.
I'll think of my wife (and have a laugh) everytime I land on the 9th now.
Who knew kegel exercises would also improve my guitar playing.
Thank you, Dani!! I hit the roots too often when soloing.
We are all affected by premature root resolution at one point or another
Post root clarity-sounds like something my Aussie buddy once told me
‘…you can get away with shit like that.’ LMAO! 🤣 👍🏽✌🏽
4.40 reminded me of Santana. Great info, thanks.
Thanks Dani for explaining stuff in a way that is so on point!
Thanks John, that's very kind of you
i love your videos marbin, you are a great teacher man...
Brilliantly and concisely said. Bravo
This is No Root November
Stay strong brother

This dude is amazing
You're amazing 😩
Great ❤
Sick!
Thanks Francesco!
This is great man, thanks!
** Heads up though, hiding your mic in your shirt means you are getting constant rustling on your voice audio.
Is that Terrence McKenna on the thumbnail? If not, well it looks like him. McKenna is a “wordsmith”….Marbin is a “fretsmith”.
I have an inside source that says it might be Stanley Kubrick...
❤❤❤
Awesome
This is some good shit

It's a personal decision, but it should be handled with care as it's a very final sound.

lol @ post root clarity!

Swed
Is that your girlfriend, in the freezer? lmao
I could have done without the sexism, but nice lesson 🤣
Btw, I dont like to use the majord 3rd because it feels like i'm changing mode
The world could do without sexism, but here we are, in reality. The major 3rd is a spicy note for sure. Thanks for watching!
Are you having problems at home mate? 😂
