I noticed that the Apple logo is on the CD, kind of interesting. Years ago I heard that "Band On The Run" was over 7 minutes long and I was hoping that this new issue might have had that included but apparently no such luck, but I'll stick get the CD tomorrow. Great video as usual, Joe.
Thank you Joe for sharing this ! --- In my opinion, nothing will replace the original sound (US and/or UK version) of this amazing album --- It's a classic --- Thanks ! 👍✌
Hey Joe. My two CD arrives from Amazon tomorrow. Sadly the main album is the same 2011 remaster. But the rough mixes is what I want to hear! See you next weekend
suggest you listen with headphones. Jet is a revelation. This set breathes new life into Band on the run. Not a cash grab. Give me a break. The same people complaining about cash grab are begging for more of these releases. (per some comments below...)
Hi Joe. Well good that you got this one. I did get it too, but I am holding out to Lisen to mine lol. Because I do have some long car ride to the Fest!! But I do show it and I do think you will like it :). I did enjoy you show ing and talking about it too :). See you sooon :)!!!
Glad you got yours Joe, I am waiting for the McCartney site for shipping info. Good to see what these look like, ordered all three selections just so I could have the obi strip on the half speed series. Thanks for posting this Joe, take care!
9:56 Thank you for your review. Honestly, this is the first time I have decided to pass on a Paul release. Just nothing here that excites me. "Underdubbed"? More like "Underwhelmed". 😅 Now, if and when Back To The Egg, London Town and Press To Play, get archive deluxes, I will be the first in line. 👍
Still waiting to get my copy. I ordered direct from Paul’s site so it might be a week or two late. Love to see the packaging on the CD. I personally love digital-sleeves like that. Reminds me of vinyl just for CD’s. Now digi-packs with the plastic tray I can’t stand.
I think I did the right thing by skipping the underdubbed version. Sometimes an alternate mix can be enjoyable, like the “stripped down” Double Fantasy. But sometimes there is too much missing from what made the original version so enjoyable. It’s like a cake that was taken out of oven before it was fully baked.
You're really selling this thing. 😊😄 I appreciate your honesty. I was already wary of getting the "underdubbed" 2 CD set. Now I'm definitely not. I will get the half-speed-mastered LP, though. I only have a "Band On The Run" LP, which I bought at a store in the mid '80's. It doesn't even have the poster.
So, this may have been what you were uploading during the AM chat (or after).. Hope my order of BOTR arrives safe and sound. I like the 'mini LP' approach to the packaging.....LOVE "Hackney Diamonds" album in the background!
Personally it would never occur to me to listen to the underdubbed mixes in search of something better or more ear-catching than the final mix, so I'm immune to disappointment. The interesting thing - for those who are interested in such stuff - is hearing a mix that was prepared by Geoff Emerick before Tony Visconti's orchestration (as well as some other band instruments and vocals) was added. Comparing the mixes allows us to start to see where the orchestral arrangement dramatises what was already there in the band mix, rather than being composed out of thin air by Visconti. We know how this was managed because Visconti has described how he was guided by or directed by Paul, who, anxious about possible bootleg leaks, only played him little "snippets" on cassette of the parts of songs where he wanted him to write strings/brass, sitting with him at the piano and "dictating" on another cassette what he wanted to hear. "Some ideas he wanted me to strictly adhere to and some were just sketches that I was asked to improve upon," said Viscont, but without being mightily specific his accounts have left open the possibility that some crucial sections - such as the dramatic link piece in BOTR - were not just scored by him, but composed by him, and quite a few readers have formed that impression. Whether this is down to reader interpretation, or whether you could say that Visconti allowed the impression to form, or at least has not discouraged it, is up for debate. But the fact is that we now see, from this October 1973 Emerick mix, that the BOTR link piece (for example) is already there as part of the structure of the band arrangement. I think this is an example of how unfinished work can be interesting, musically and hiostorically, and |I'm grateful for the release.
Just for the "record", I didn't really expect any underdub here to be "better" than the final release. I just wanted an intriguing difference, and I only got that with Band On The Run and (especially) Let Me Roll It.
5 Hours !!! Holy mackerel ! That really made me laugh. Enjoyed hearing your thoughts on this , I wont get mine until tomorrow which I think is the actual release date. I think with 1985 you can treat it as the karaoke version and add your own vocals.... now that would make a great video . Nice stuff Joe.
Helen Wheels isn't on the underdubbed album because it wasn't one of the songs on the rough album mix by Geoff Emerick on 14th October 1973, which is what this version is.
Thank you for your review! I bought the original BOTR when it first came out ! I bought the 25th Aniversary edition on 2cd which I liked I then bought the Archive edition on cd and vinyl! So when I heard about this my instinct was to pass on it ! I am quite confused by why the under dubbed release is being put out! We know the original demos were. Stolen when Paul was in Nigeria! So they were never going to appear - pity as I would have like to hear those! My main problem with the under dubbed edition is I read some years ago that Paul brought in Tony Visconti to do the orchestral work. I understand at that point Paul did not have the musical phrase to link the main part of Band on the Rum song to the acoustic part! Visconti has taken credit for composing that linking section or riff and I think was aggrieved he did not get credit for that ! So in short don’t believe the version of the song presented existed prior to the orchestral parts being added!
I think it’s very telling on a recent promo video with McCartney talking about the under dubbed mixes he said “It’s the best we could come up with” My guess is they couldn’t come up with a way to make the album better so they did the under dubbing to increase sales
Thanks Joe!! While I personally have no great desire to buy Band On The Run AGAIN (As much as I love it, four copies/versions is enough) I'm very intrigued to hear the rough/underdubbed mixes, so I will give them a listen on spotify and may get that 2 CD version as it does really nice. Great video as always!! :-)
I keep seeing reviews or thoughts on the underdubbed lp on youtube. Man, these bonus track albums should never be reviewed like a standard album. Some like it. Some... not so much. look at it like this... we used to hunt down bootleg records growing up. Now? Well... they ALL give us a "bootleg" version. Paul. John. Beatles. Kiss. Dylan. Etc... I dont think rating them as legit albums is fair. Example: My Glyn Johns KUM BACK boots were great prior to Let It Be being issued back in the day. Now we have a box set for Let It Be. Bootleg stuff included. If you look at it this way, then its just them doing the boot search for us 🙂 Be happy about getting any alt stuff. That was a big job when we were young.
Hey Joe, Great honest review!! Thanks I have not purchased this yet because I have been on the fence about it I have the original cd from the. 80’s I don’t even own the lp of this album. I have been saving for the Fest and that means saying no to many items like this new release. I might get the album just to have a better sounding mix but I don’t want to waste my money. I still am undecided This review does help in my thought process. How does the regulator album sound is it an improvement over what has been released before? Thanks again take care.
Have to agree. The underdubs are underwhelming and it’s often difficult to pick out too many differences from the released versions. The exceptions are Band on the Run and Jet. These are interesting but who wants to listen to them more than once or twice without the added orchestration? Have to disagree about No Words which has always been one of my favourite Wings tracks. The CD doesn’t cost a fortune so it’s worth buying it to take a listen but I don’t think I’ll listen to the disc 2 stuff that often👍
The underdubbed versions are overall ok, nothing to write home about on half of them and pretty nice for the rest. I like the stripped down version of Jet and Band On The Run especially. Ok now with this out of the way Paul has time and space to start talking about his new album.
I agree, this album needs Helen Wheels on it. I heard it on the radio first and I would've been pissed if it was left off. When I picked up the archive LP (the single one) and saw no Helen Wheels, I thought "da fuq is this shite"?
I have to respectfully disagree about the “overdubbed” disc. They may not be particularly “revelatory”, but they do have a few elements here and there that are either missing or not easily heard in the finished products. I do hear the odd backing vocal and instrumental touch in spots. As far as the vocals in 1985, I don’t particularly miss that because the timbre of his vocals are a little grating and off putting to me in that song. As a side note, I’ve noticed that in different versions of the album, there are no lyrics for “Helen Wheels,” even though it is on the albums I have, going back to seventies pressings. At least in the issues I own. I love your videos, BTW.
Sounds like this may be the biggest rip-off yet based on your feedback of the “ under dubbed “ versions - to me the best version of BOTR is the 25th anniversary version because it has comments from the then all still living people famously included in the front cover photo and it had alternate live versions of a few songs - along with commentary from Paul - I play that double cd package a lot - thanks Joe
Comment after comment, year after year, reissue after reissue you whine about this, it's so expected and tiring - not only here, but on everyone else's Beatles channels as well. You don't feel like buying? Then don't...but nobody is forcing you nor "grabbing your cash". It's not your money. STFU already.
Just got mine today Joe! I got the 2 LP set! I’m excited, but then again, I excite easily! ❤😉👌🏆

Thank you Joe I will certainly keep an eye out for these items. And may you and all you love be blessed and be safe.

Maybe use 1985 as a sing-along in the car? Sounds like fun to me!
I'll have to order my CD set...behind the times. I hope the CD remaster will be worth it.
Hi Joe. Well good that you got this one. I did get it too, but I am holding out to Lisen to mine lol. Because I do have some long car ride to the Fest!! But I do show it and I do think you will like it :). I did enjoy you show ing and talking about it too :). See you sooon :)!!!

I will go on the hunt for my copy tomorrow, or this weekend, for me that is half the fun! Thanks for shareing Joe.

Nice Joe.... I just ordered the CD version
I love 1985, I am a sucker for instrumentals. Always happy when there is an instrumental version for a great musical piece
Hello Joe I might wait and get the cd later

HI JOE GREAT VIDEO ON SHOWING AND REVIEWING BAND ON THE RUN HALF SPEED VINYL AND THE CD. I ORDERED THE VINYL. ENJOY AND TAKE CARE. 😊
The high-resolution version of the underdubbed sound better on a good stereo than the standard version of the album.
I did buy this yesterday and I waiting for the cd

This could have been potentially a far more expansive box set had Paul not gotten mugged in Africa and robbed of his demos.

It seems like this version won't replace the archive collection box set.
Instead underdubbed the 5.1 DTS-CD should've been re-released.
1985 had vocals.
No McCartney lead.
Hi Joe, Chauncey Phillips here to tell you that special editions are very rarely special.
The standard album always sounded stripped down to begin with, so I will not be buying this.
I'm listening for free on You Tube Music, then deciding which (if any) of it I'll download from I tunes.
