Having a Ram under-dubbed would be excellent! I wished Paul used this for the archived set.I hope this sells well, and he decides to release more under-dubbed material.

RAM is Paul’s absolute masterpiece, his “ópera prima”, so to speak. One of its many marvelous characteristics is that it was recorded without overdubbs, hence there could be no underdubb version ! I do wish Paul performed it live with his band in a sort of farewell tour.

Although not mentioned in the video, what I love about the under dubbed on cd is the clarity of Paul's melodic bass lines. They really add to songs.

I really enjoy the under dubbed mixes and gives this old chestnut a fresh listening experience. Band on the Run was the first McCartney album I bought on CD back in the 80s so I have been long familiar with it and it still ranks near the top for me alongside Tug Of War and Ram. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this Andrew!

Thank you for mentioning that the new CD has the same mastering as the 2010 set, which I already have. I'll probably get the anniversary edition anyway for the underdubbed mixes and the inclusion of "Helen Wheels." I do have a turntable, but it isn't great, and I've been primarily a CD guy for over 30 years.

Thanks for this really insightful video review Andrew. I really enjoy my 2 LP set which I got last week. I love the underdubbed album, I just love hearing early versions of songs like this, lends some context to how an album finally sounds, and how these songs evolved to the versions we all came to know and love. I have a bit of a weakness for the more acoustic material of McCartney's career right from Blackbird on the white album to the current day. (If only he'd record a wholly acoustic solo album, but I can but dream.) So Bluebird, and Mamunia are among my current faves on this release. I do have a soft spot also for Let Me Roll It, or as I call it, his Plastic Ono Band On The Run track. I also invested in the CD set which I play through my surround sound system, and I have to say it sounds fab, I'd go as so far to say that it's on par with my Revolver deluxe set when I play that through this system of mine. The half speed master is now my go to choice of this album to play, having Helen Wheels on here is a bonus which I enjoy, and I wonder why it wasn't on the UK pressing as lyrically it does fit in with the rest of the album. So thanks for this Macca, now I'm looking forward to a Venus and Mars half speed with it's very own version of underdubbed....

Thanks heaps for your post which I'm really pleased to have watched and listened.
Having purchased the double CD here in Australia for $45, I was incredibly disappointed, on first listen, to learn that the original album was in fact the 2010 remix which I don't rate that highly and not the new 50th anniversary mix. If I hadn't watched your post I would have filed this double CD 50th anniversary edition away as a bad purchase.
Your comments regarding the under dubbed mix had me intrigued although I was feeling somewhat sceptical but gave it go. Wow!!! it really is awesome and sounds amazing. After listening to the CD I gave it (under dubbed mix) a listen through my Air Pod Max - dolby atmos and geez it really does sound amazing! So many highlights; Band on the Run vocals, Jet drums, Bluebird bass and percussion, etc etc.
    Thanks again!

I ordered the new half speed master on the weekend it was released, but my record shop already sold all of their copies. Due to high demand, the same happened in many other record stores in The Netherlands. I was informed that the half speed master is being re-printed and a new batch is expected to be available at the end of this month or the beginning of march. On the Steve Hoffman forum, some people say the sales did disappoint, but the information I got says the opposite: they did not release enough copies in the first place to fulfill the demand, so many of us did not have the chance yet to buy one. Like me. ~Marjet p.s. This is a stunning video and I enjoyed every second. Thanks!

Well done! I’ve always loved this album. I was thrilled with the idea of the underdubbed idea since the Doors “Perception” release. I love the underdubbed version of BOTR. It’s what I listen to the most now.
I do hope they do this to Venus and Mars. I’ve never been a fan of the original mix of that release anyway, so a rework would be nice…plus an underdubbed companion. Ram also would benefit…Abbey Road…Sgt. Pepper’s…uh oh,I’ll stop there.
By the way, I cannot hear BOTR without Helen Wheels. That brain thing…!

Thanks for the content Andrew! I bought all 3 of the available releases, both on vinyl and disc. I do have to say something though, the first LP I ever purchased with my own money was BotR. I bought my copy at a discount store called Meijer, for what I believe was $3.99. In 1979, I bought a copy of BotR from the UK, from LordSitar Records out of Long Island, NY. To be frank, after ALL these years, I never noticed that the photos on the back cover were in a different order, what an odd little detail! I will also add that I am disappointed that MPL just shipped the Archive version of BotR, they could have done something, like maybe give us the ATMOS version or the NIMBUS version, if they have it! Then maybe it would have increased sales even more! Now on an unrelated note, what in the hell is Apple thinking with these 3" one-sided singles they are releasing for Record Store Day?Why couldn't they have just done an EP of the four tracks and if they wanted to maximize the money haul, they could have just released 3 seperate EPs, one in red vinyl, one in white and one in blue! I really don't want or need another format to have to try to play. Cheers Andrew!

He’s been promising the damn thing since the days of wings. Still waiting for it and it would be a great seller because it’s all new music that has not been released.

Thank you for the tip on the Meze headphones. My old pair of headphones was worn out and falling apart. After watching your video last Sunday I ordered a pair using the 20% discount. They arrived today! Talk about fast service. I've just given them a test ride listening to Sgt. Pepper's, my favorite record and the one with which I am most familiar. The Mese headphones performed brilliantly. The clarity was wonderful. As you noted the bass and mid-range were quite nice. They are extremely comfortable and the fit--a problem with past headphones--was perfect. My last test will be how my ears feel after 3 or 4 hours straight of listening. My equipment is set up in the same room with our TV. I don't want to be in a room separate from my wife, who mostly watches TV. So, 90% of my music listening is done with headphones.

Although the concept of stripped down mixes is nothing new (only the "under dubbed" buzzword is new), what really needs to come out are the individual recording tracks IMHO. With technology so many people are essentially providing stems and whatnot as it is, the next best way to engage with a fan is let them create their own personal mixes. David Bowie did this ages ago on a CD ROM. Sometimes the original mix is near perfect except for an instrument being too loud or quiet. Officially releasing the multitracks would be the ultimate "thank you" and engagement with fans. Just my thoughts on it. Peace all!

Andrew, that was a nice review of the new “Band On The Run” 50th. I bought the CD Version only because of the Underdubbed Mixes. I wasn’t expecting anything earth shattering sound wise from the 2010 mix or 1/2 speed master mix. My ears are too old to hear the difference, but I still can tell when a recording is brickwalled. Thankfully none was detected. Like yourself I was floored and pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed the “Underdubbed Mixes, this will be getting many spins on my CD player. Whereas, “Let It Be Naked” and “Double Fantasy Stripped Down” not so much. Glad to see you looking good and feeling better Andrew, Cheers!

I had the same feeling when they put of the stripped back Double Fantasy. The clarity of the tracks is amazing and McCartney's drum and bass playing is excellent ! And the combination of Paul's and Denny's acoustic guitars is wonderful. Yes, whilst I was listening to the underdubbed version, my brain was constantly filling in the rest ! Great video and rundown of the material in this set. I own the Columbia half speed master and both, the new and old sound superb. The Columbia version has noisier vinyl, in that you hear more record noise in between tracks. The Columbia is also slightly brighter. The new version is hotter in level and has a slight low end bump. Other than that, they are both great. The under-dubbed is a cool listening experience, but at the end of the day, the released version rules. My favorite from under-dubbed is Jet. That track always sounded dark, possibly because of the tape shedding issue they had while recording the song, or the dubbing of additional instrument, or both. Sometimes less is more. Thank you for posting this wonderful video.

Another great video Andrew. I only own the original US release on vinyl that I purchased in 1974. It is surely Paul's best album and I would guess that in some way Paul knew this album had to shine after the success of John's Imagine and George's "All things must pass." I did
listened to the Dolby Atmos version of the "Under Dubs" on streaming and they are a delight to the ears. In some ways better in my opinion, since , although I loved the album, I always thought the original album sounded "overdubbed" .

But, I just gave the underdubbed (which I agree the alternate tracklist along with the underdubbedness provides a refreshing listen and). And the atmos version of the main album is very nice as well. My favorite atmos album tho to date is actually not Beatles related, but Stephen Sanchez’s “Angel Face”. Worth a listen if you’ve never heard. Real nice 50s/60s r&b and rock n roll sound. I totally agree with you Andrew, I really enjoyed the underdubbed tracks a lot. I thought it was great. Too bad its not a standalone vinyl lp. Im tired of having to buy lps i already have. Sometimes more than one.
Id love to have Ram like this too.
    See you next time.

Since you mentioned it, I have a sealed copy of the CBS Mastersound half-speed mastered LP. It still has the price sticker on the plastic cover: $13.59 (that's USD). According to an online inflation calculator, that would be $46.11 in 2024. For comparison, back in '79 or '80 when I bought the MFSL Abbey Road, it was about $17 (probably $16.99) as best I can recall. And when I started buying the UK imports in the late 70s, they were generally a penny or two under $9 or $10.

Great video!! I had preordered the 2CD… the underdubs sound good!! It was a fun listen. I was baffled at how much I enjoyed Jet… almost prefer it to the original!! Also, I agree, I’d really love if MPL/Paul (whoever) would finally put London Town and BTTE in the archive collection, and finish Wings’ discography!!

The underdubbed has been my main jam for the past week. It’s a fun listen.
I just wish they had offered the underdubbed alone. Most don’t need another band on the run.

I was excited for the underdubbed mixes because I so enjoyed the rough mixes and re-workings the Ramones did for the 40th anniversaries of their ‘70s albums. (1980’s End of the Century received the same treatment in 2020, but that’s sat on the shelf since then for frustratingly unspecified reasons.) Suffice to say that underdubbed did not disappoint, and Let Me Roll It is indeed the most compelling track in this form.

Your waveform visualizations definitely confirm what I'm hearing. This is a great pressing of a great album and a worthy new release in Paul's half-speed remaster series. The underdubbed LP is fun too, with Bluebird and Let Me Roll It being particular favorites. (What IS that sound during the intro of Let Me Roll It? A chicken?)
As for the still missing version of BOTR, we'll never hear it, because the stolen tape story looms large in the McCartney legend. He's not about to ruin one of his favorite oft-told interview answers by suddenly saying "Oh we had another copy all along."

Glad you are all recovered Andrew. Personally, I love to hear rough mix or "underdubbed" versions of albums. It gives a feel of how they were before all the polish arrives and gives the raw sound that I love. That is not to say that it works on all albums as sometimes they can actually just sound worse. However, with this album that contains some of my favourite Macca (and Wings) songs, I look forward to listening to it very soon (am awaiting a suitably opportune moment when I will not be disturbed!). Talking of which, I do feel it is a bit naughty that they are now labelling it as a Paul McCartney album. Bit unfair on Linda and Denny especially. Shame on the record company for changing it. I wonder why that is and what the upshot of it is royalty wise? Hmmmmmmm, just a thought. Any thoughts on this at your end Andrew? Anyway, great video as always. Thanks

Thank you! This was a very entertaining review, and frankly one of the first that hold the under dubbed to a positive level. I purchased the half speed stand alone, and felt it really shined in audio quality. I'm kind of regretting not picking up the under dubbed now. Maybe I'll get it too. Thank you for the quality work you do and for your enthusiasm you put into your reviews and research. Also enjoyed your Meze review, by the way where can you apply the Parlogram20 code?

I’ve had a listen to some of the ‘underdubbed’ mixes - and while they are interesting, and really show what a great unit Denny, Linda and Paul were as a band, I don’t find they add anything more to Band On The Run. I’m still happy with my old vinyl copy, and will continue to play that. What I would like to hear are some of the demos - notably for Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five, Bluebird and Jet.

One other thing to note for Atmos, I had a pleasure this last week to hear, silly love songs on a pair of klipsch horn speakers. I understand what the mastering engineer of mobile Fidelity sound lab meant when he says good stereo will just outclass surroundsound and you won’t even need multiple channels. mind you this also, I think a lot of it being both the speakers, and the fact that was Macintosh amplifiers

Let Me Roll It is one of my favorites and the new underdubbed version is now my favorite. Paul’s voice and the harmonies are more open and sound amazing, and I prefer how the lyrics are presented here compared to the released version. The rest of the tracks are very interesting but I still prefer most of the release versions except for Let Me Roll It. Although this set is tempting, I am probably going to stick with finding a UK original when I go on my trip to London.

Who would have said ten or 15 years ago that the LP records would return on the market, with more prestige than before? Who would have bet? Well, here they are. I have been brooding a lot of times about how the MP3 and the podcast are no good for real music, the music you really like. For the ones like me who spent their teen-years holding in their hands the records they loved, placing them on the furniture (standing and leaning against the wall) to look at them more often, well, you understand what I mean. They had pushed the MP3 too far, this is the right reaction. With MP3 you don’t own anything, you haven’t got anything in your hands, and you can lose it all if the flash memory goes nuts or if a virus cancels your hard disk. Let’s get back to the old good LPs!

Hello Andrew Great video as always!!!! I have not purchased this album I still have my original cd US version I am very disappointed that the cd is the 2010 virsion and that it wasn’t remixed it should have been I have heard a lot of negative comments about the underdubbed mixes I haven’t purchased any of the albums with the US obby strip Yes they look Great and I would like to own them but with out the guarantee that all the albums will come out this way, I don’t wanna start investing look what’s happened to the colored vinyl look what’s happened to the archive series? Everything is stopped why I don’t know but I don’t want to start purchasing just to be let down. If Abby Road and Nems consider the archive edition to be the best then why didn’t they continue with that series and as for the record why didn’t they just put out the 2010 version for the cd and vinyl again. Maybe I don’t know to much and am over speculating but the action of last doesn’t help me make a good decision to buy buy buy. I am hopeful for a NEW ALBUM THAT WILL MAKE ME HAPPY! Thanks for the video take care.

Also where's the Dolbly Atmos mix of the White Album? They released a few of the songs in Atmos for the new blue album so they should do the rest.

Thanks to your review Andrew I went ahead and ordered the 2 record vinyl set. As with most here I have several copies. I did not however get the 2010 archive edition (have all the others on vinyl)..I skipping it because it was released not too long after the 25th anniversary vinyl edition (1998)..I'm a huge collector but in this case was not interested in buying another copy just 12 years later. Again I was on the fence on this but your review pushed me off!

For the life of me, I don't get why some people are so dismissive of No Words. It's my second favorite song on the album, after Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five. Paul even included No Words in Wings' live set, during their last tour in 1979. On the other hand, I am not a big fan of Helen Wheels. I think it disrupts the flow of the album.

It's because everyone likes different things, that's why. There's no universal truths here. You like blue, they like red. You like wooden kitchen cupboards, they like painted. You like Words, they don't. Way it is. Music would be way too boring and uninteresting if we all liked the SAME things. Ugh.

Nice review, Andrew. In my opinion the Underdubbed are definitely worth it... and that's it. The quality of the packaging is not up to scratch, I find the design for the underdubbed LP underwhelming and the sound of the remaster a bit flat (I haven't had the luck of listening to a 1st ed yet).

Just a question you may know ... On how many tracks does McCartney mention Sailor Sam?
Band On The Run / Helen Wheels ..... any more?
I can only think of two but it seems that there are many more.
Sailor Sam is a character from Rupert so I can see where Paul is coming from.
