- I've always said 'Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good'. I don't know which played more of a factor but this could not have gone any better!
Having to remove this bracket was definitely a bit of a step backwards, but there's a domino effect as a result. Setting aside that the original install was insert explicative getting the location of the mounting bolts located on the new transom was key for being able to also install the reinforcement knees, framework for seating options and knowing what kind of space would be avail for installing misc systems like batteries, pumps, electronics, etc.
Glad I did this, but wouldn't want to do it again lol :-)

I am a classic Wood boat restorer. I have been using 3M 5200 for about 30 years. I have had to remove planking that I installed bedded in 5200. I discovered a long time ago. To start I use a puddy knife and a heat gun. I heat the puddy knife initially. The hot knife softens the 5200. I can usually get mahogany planking removed intact. The toughest thing is to get it started. Once it is started a heat gun will soften 5200 quite easily... The first time i did this was with an oak frame 2"X2" attached to a 7/8" frame, and the 1 1/4" keel that I somehow put together 1/8" off center.. which was very important due to the upper rudder guide/bearing.. I had to figure how to get 5200 to revert.. I tried on test pieces with chemicals, cutting, (before oscillating saws) and I finally tried heat. It worked very well and I got those three white oak pieces apart. All three pieces were usable when I got them apart...
I had to remove 4 old throgh hulls from my 79 Morgan to install new instruments. Razor knife, Marine Debond and patience (parts of 2 days for debond to work) got the job done. Use isopropyl alcohol to deactivate the debond. Great video Andy!
With the invention of oscillating cutters, projects like these have become a bit easier. Being able to slide a scraper blade or small offset cutting blade changed the game.
That's wicked holding power of the 3M 5200. Impressed.
This was great to watch, I’m glad this worked out, thanks Andy 😁👍
I've replaced a number of hatches and windows that were installed with 5200. Used a smaller version saw like you used, masking tape to protect surrounding gelcoat, and a pack of wood door/window wedges. Got good enough that I could get most off in 30 minutes or less. Always charged extra if I had to fight 5200. Like the tube says "use for a permanent bond..."
Worked in a yard in South Dartmouth Ma. Years ago we needed to remove & replace a flat coaming cap from a sailing boat (don't remember make or size). We removed all the screws & since the cap was being replaced we just chiseled away a section. Me & another worker used a very strong fishing line to work under the cap & "saw" away at the 5200 till we eventually cut through it. Back then we used to call 5200 "It will never come off". Thank goodness for Sika.
Glad that worked out for you. Sometimes it’s helpful when the last guy didn’t know what they were doing. Anytime you can get 5200 apart with or without a chemical agent is always a win!!
Brilliant job getting that off Andy 👏 good to see the shoulders are healing and can get back to doing some work 💪
I'm really happy the bracket came off as it did. Aside from the big enhancement to safety and peace of mind, it's good content- there's plenty of classic plastic hulls out there, like old Bertrams, that can have a 2nd life, and granted alignment won't be an issue, but installation will be of great value to people out there.
Congrats on defeating 5200 !!! It's awesome stuff and personally I'm glad I don't have to have a license to use the stuff!!! As always, thanks for sharing.
I am glad it went a lot easier than you expected. I have found that an oscillating tool with the hard scraper blade works well for cutting 5200 between pieces. Try it next time.
Why do I never see a cooking video like this. Here's how you cook it this is what what I did. It sucks don't do this. Thank for the honesty
Sometimes, actually most of the time, it's better to be lucky than good but luck can also be made by good prep. Looks like you're making good progress. Keep the good stuff coming.
Just removed a teak cap rail that was installed with the 3m product in which we will not speak of. I feel your pain Andy
Looks like you’re healing. Great! Watched video, hard to see (as pessimistic as I am) how it could go any other way, which would be better. Most other ways… bad. Some very bad. Calling it a win.
And when the kids leave their stuff lying around… I’m buying some 3M!
I worked in prototype car industry for 20 years. We used oscillating tool to cut windshield out, huge time saver.
its kind of the only way with stuff like this... once you see it you see it. but thing is its still messy and time consuming. but of course much better than more destructive forms of removal.
heat up a penknife blade or crafting knife blade n go over the rubber* does makes life a tad easier as well.
forgot to mention.. Luve to see extra helping hands once a while.. makes life happier.
5200 is great for things you want to seal for a long long time. 4200 is for things you may want to remove. In 55 years of boat repair I have used 5200 once. I packed the joint where the hull liner comes together in my head space under the teak shower grate. That was 25 years ago. It has performed perfectly.
Also, I use lumberjack plastic wood wedges. They are durable and won't gouge glass 🙌🏼
Debond from 3m helped get mine off a little leverage and putty knives
My brother in law is a self proclaimed shade tree boat expert who doesn't know the difference between a sealant and an adhesive. He uses 5200 to fill every gap. And I laugh and laugh!
Well done!!! I get your point about the 5200, interested to see what you end up using.
SWEEEET! TY for sharing Captain Andy.
I used a product called de bond marine formula (aerosol can). Used it to remove a thru hull transducer. Drilled 1/8 inch holes as close together around the perimeter and soaked it many times. Worked well, but the penetrating power of the product doesn’t go very deep so smaller pieces of 5200 are attacked more effectively. Soaking time and repeated applications helped the process.
Saw you working in some strange angles getting work done, the shoulders must be getting better. Good to see.
Glad it came off as easy as it did for you. That could have been a lot more painful. You didnt even get to try out the De-Bond lol. That stuff works though event though it is pricey.
I'll give them a try when cleaning up the mating surfaces of the platform ;-)
It’s official. You are back!!!!
Aside from the leaking, was there a logistical reason for removing the bracket? Will you still be using an OB to power, or switching to something else?
Leaking concern for sure, also was not able to re-drill the new holes through the transom at the proper angle with the bracket in place
Back to inboards next! 😉 👍
Crusaders!
But the added real estate not having them inboard!!! So many options ;-)
So so informative!
That must have been the “This has been a Boatworks Today production” we saw helping you today. I’m sure your ride hasn’t always been easy but it must be a thrill to have her along. How about a reprise of her performance?
I must have always been lucky with 5200. I've always used piano wire or used a small current through the piano wire to warm it up like they do with a cutting styrofoam and it normally chewed right through it. At least that's how I was taught how to deal with it.
Was the bracket an off shelf item or custom made job?
I think each of the Armstrong brackets are custom? Not sure, the previous owner is who went through that process :-)
Well that couldn’t have went any better. Glad it came off without too much hassle or damage to the boat. How did your shoulders feel after all that sawing?
Actually not bad! Shoulders have turned the corner
I thought it was cold here in Tennessee at 25° you're talking 2530 degrees below zero that's cold Bonnie my motor for my boat will be here Wednesday I am so excited
👍👍👍
i was saving this video for lunch later but the algorithim is happier if i click on it as soon as im notified.... so im just going to minimize it, upvote and leave this comment... then watch it later while im eating my miso and sesame chicken.
Sounds like a good lunch plan! Sounds pretty yummy too ;-)!! Thank you!
The hand sawing sure looked hard on the shoulders. How did you feel in the morning?
I'm actually feeling pretty much back to normal now which is exciting! Just need to remember to throttle byself a bit and not be too ambitious lol
auto focus is not always the joy. Try lock the focal point when you work in and out the scene. 😊
Yea noticed that while editing, too many things to keep track of lol :-)
@ hehe yeah, I can only imagine, love your channel of cause. Am a boat owner myself.
Looks like you put a lot of shoulder into that sawing you had to do. How's the shoulders feeling today?
Made a lot of progress over the past few weeks!
Good to hear
Hey Andy, been a while since i have been on your channel. Is this Bertram for a customer or is this yours?. Man what a beautiful hull...
It is his. He's been working on it for a while but had his shoulder problems and eventual surgery delaying it. He took some time off for the surgeries and apparently has been back for a couple videos that I missed. Just in case he doesn't answer.
It's mine, @Sumduma55 explained it perfectly :-)
The tag read "this stuff should be banned" my brain said 5200!
Lol!
Was one of your helping hands the "this has been a Boatworks Today production" girl? If so, she's a little older than she sounds.
Now, if you can get that green spot on the bow taken care of. It always bugs me when you use it as a backdrop 😄.
That was the girl waving (she's 15 now, was maybe 3 when we recorded the closer BWT thing lol). Time goes by way too fast!!
@@boatworkstoday Awesome!
Man just spent months laid up with shoulder surgery and here he is using a pull saw ....
Surprisingly it felt pretty good! No sharp pain during or after :-)!
We only use 5200 below the waterline
I’ve missed half the story…… What is being removed, Is it a just a swim platform? Or something else?
It's an outboard engine bracket (twins) with a sealed flotation chamber as part of the platform (made by Armstrong). I did a new transom on this a while back hoping that I'd be able to re-drill the mounting holes through the new core from inside the chamber. Unfortunately it's not possible to match the angles needed from inside the chamber for the bolts / nuts / washers to set flush. So had to remove in order to make that happen. Also if you watch last weeks video it goes over some issues in the way it was originally installed (not by me) which also needed to be addressed :-) Hope this helps!
@ got it. All caught up now thanks Andy. Hi from Australia. Heading for 31C temp here today where I am. 94F.
Hope it's not torquing your shoulder too much Andy!!! Got to take care of yourself first and foremost!!!
are you and the guy from easycomposites friends? bc i think you should be. just saying.
oh also i got a 3d scanner and tried it on a similar b25 my buddy owns... for 3d printing trim tab shims. worked pretty well. i did the canvas on teak deck sailboat from the other year.
I'm familiar with that channel but have never talked or met him :-)
And the new shoulders?
They're doing great now!
3M 5200 is impressive. With all the products 3M makes, why don't they come up with something that will make removal of it easier.
no kidding!! That would be awesome
5200 is tough. Hope you didn’t jack your shoulders pull on that saw.
after the fact but heat is 5200's down fall a simple heat gun does the trick could have heated up the flange and would have popped off
I had to remove a swim step so I could reposition it to the port side and install a kicker motor. Yep…5200. 😤.
Various blades, putty knives, a rubber mallet, a floor jack and a 2X4 were required. Those and an hour plus of cussing, swearing, prying, slicing, hammering, wedging…
🤨. 5200. 😖
I hear you! Out of all the projects I've worked on this was the only instance where I didn't get my a$$ kicked by the stuff lol
Why oh why didn't you use the right tool for the job? I had a windscreen replaced on my car. The guy came out to do the job. How do you get the adhesive off I said. He held up a roll of steel cutting wire. One minute later, the windscreen is off. Clean off the remaining 5200 from the metal. Apply new 5200 to the new windscreen, move into place with suction cups and the swing arm on his truck and done. 15 minutes. Don't drive for 4 hours he said.
piano wire maybe.
OMG, I just realized one of those you women is the owner of the Adorable outro voice ^tm. Does she cringe when she hears it now?
lol, kinda :-) She was the one that briefly waved
BRO. HEAT IT FROM INSIDE BRACKET. PROPANE TORCH. IT WILL LET GO, THEN YOU CAN REMOVE ADHESIVE AFTER BRACKET OFF
FIRE FIRE!
@yepyep340 Noooo, I do it all the time. Just did it on a Grady to pop off aluminum engine Bracket😊
Never use 5200. use life seal.
Good grief man, big job… Hopefully you didn’t over exert your shoulders.
Glue paint and a few small bolts will fail that boat was not designed for that stupid bracket should have an IO like it was designed for.
We'll see ;-)
If you’re not sure DONT USE 5200!!!! 😂
Heat will break 5200 bond ....rookie
Lol
