The story of the song is really great!
Mariah and Boyz II Men were writing 2 seperate songs about people in their life that passed away. Boyz II Men's Road Manager and Mariah co-producer David Cole who died of AIDS. When they got together they realised that their songs sounded similar and that's how One Sweet Day was born.
There is another version of the song called One Sweet Day (Chucky's Remix) which has more elements of the 2 songs being combined!
I love that after all of these years listening to this song still gives me goose bumps.
Such a deep meaningful song by such beautiful voices. Fun fact Mariah wrote most of the lyrics because she had lost a very important friend to her, AIDS took him from this World. The thing is that when she approached Boyz II MEn they had also lost their manager by AIDS and were working on a very similar song as an homage, they together wrote the bridge and Mariah made most of the arrangement . The song debuted at #1, it was her third song to achieve such feat. in the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for 16 weeks, a record she held for 27 years until the ridiculous Ol time road and its many remixes surpassed it, this song deserved to hold that record forever. This song is also in The Billboard Hot 100 songs of all time, It became the song of the 90s and is cherished by many people coping with the loss of a loved one. It was snubbed at the Grammys but thats nothing new. The biggest selling female artist of all time with 19 #1 singles and 82 weeks accumulated, lauded as one of the best vocalist of all time in mainstream media, Songwriters Hall of Fame honoree, BMI icon award for prolific songwriting and is one of the most succesful female producer of all time. Only artist in history to have 2 songs of the decade (90s and 00s) yyyet she has only 5 Grammys, they gave her the opportunity to thank her fans on camera only once. The don't like her because she has exposed them as phony with doubtful ethics.
That's not a "fun" fact though... it's a "sad" fact rather.
