  • Adrian Lund spent much of his career getting automakers to build vehicles that would protect their occupants from serious injury in a crash. After a severe collision last summer, the retired president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway Loss Data Institute in all likelihood owes his life to the improvements he helped usher in.
Lund was on his way to Savannah, Georgia, early one Saturday in August 2021. He had gone just 15 miles from his northern Virginia home when a car traveling the wrong way on the Interstate 95 express lanes collided with his. The frontal collision in the left lane sent Lund’s car spinning and rolling before coming to rest upside down on the right shoulder.
Lund estimates he was traveling 60 or 65 mph. The other car was going about 50.
“This was a high-speed crash, one that probably 10 years ago, I wouldn’t be here to talk to you about it,” he said recently.

ARLINGTON, Va. - Adrian Lund spent much of his career getting automakers to build vehicles that would protect their occupants from serious injury in a crash. After a severe collision last summer, the retired president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway Loss Data Institute in all likelihood owes his life to the improvements he helped usher in.
Lund was on his way to Savannah, Georgia, early one Saturday in August.
“This was a high-speed crash, one that probably 10 years ago, I wouldn't be here to talk to you about it,” he said recently.
Sadly, the other driver, a 29-year-old woman, was thrown from her car during the crash and died. When the crash occurred, she was driving the wrong way after making a U-turn in the southbound lanes.
Lund, who retired from IIHS-HLDI in 2017, credits his car, a 2020 BMW 540i with saving his life. The model, a 2020 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK, earned good ratings in all six crashworthiness tests, including the ones most applicable to Lund’s crash, the small overlap front and roof strength.
Lund remembers hanging upside down after the crash and noticing that he had room to move his legs. He was aware that he had just been in a frontal offset collision not all that different from the many tests he had watched in the crash hall at the IIHS Vehicle Research Center. In those tests, the structural intrusion is often worst around the legs, and the crash test dummy frequently registers high leg injury measures.
“The emergency teams began to show up shortly thereafter,” Lund said. “They kept asking me, ‘Are you OK?’ I said, ‘I think I'm OK. I don't feel anything broken.’” Soon after, the rescuers cut the seat belt and pulled him out. Lund recalled feeling relief once he was out and able to see people’s faces.
Dominik Schuster, vice president of vehicle safety at BMW, said the crash showed the effectiveness of the vehicle’s safety concept and the importance of the extensive testing that vehicles undergo during development.
“In the end, it's all about one thing - providing vehicle occupants with the best possible protection in the event of an actual crash. IIHS has also been pursuing the same goal for decades. By setting requirements and performing tests derived from real-world crashes, they have been instrumental in driving vehicle safety,” Schuster added. “Ultimately, the crash Adrian Lund had with his BMW 540i is a powerful example of how the interaction between consumer protection organizations like IIHS and automakers saves lives on the road.”
The other car in the crash, a 2016 BMW 228i, also had good crashworthiness ratings for the five tests that IIHS was conducting in 2016. Because the driver wasn’t belted, she was ejected from the vehicle, virtually eliminating any chance of survival. Without knowing more about the condition of her car, it’s impossible to say whether she would have survived this particular crash even if she had been belted. After striking Lund’s car, her car immediately collided with the jersey barrier. In addition, because of its smaller size and lighter weight, the midsize 2 series was at a disadvantage in a crash with the 5 series, a large car.
Lund suffered from dizziness for a couple of weeks resulting from a blow to the head. He had serious bruises on his chest, left side and leg and both heels, along with cuts on his arm. He also had some neck discomfort for several months, which he believes was a result of being upside down after the crash and supporting some of his weight with his head.
“In a crash like this, you don't come out uninjured,” Lund said. “Considering the crash I was in, that I had a frontal, followed by a rollover - yeah, I'm pretty lucky. The car did its job.”

German cars from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen have always been the most safest places in a car, if you have a hard accident.
Especially Mercedes-Benz literally invented car safety standards, totally without IIHS "influence", you clown!
The IIHS is just one of many worldwide car safety institutes, and of course the "in house" car safety engineers from the carmakers are the most important people for car safety, which has been the most important thing for German carmakers since decades.

European NCAP crash tests are much more "real world" than you would think! NCAP is as "forward going" as IIHS.
Why do you think, German cars from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen are the most safest places for drivers and passengers, if you have such a hard accident like Mr. Lund had in his 5 Series BMW???
You are talking fucking bullshit, you clown!
BMW and all the other German carmakers are producing such extremely safe cars because of NCAP!
"I prefer to drive cars who passed throuhg IIH tests"... , says a fucking dumb US driver, who maybe is still one of the unbelievably many US clown car drivers, who still don't use safety belts... 🤣🤣🤣
The fact, that a lot of Americans still refuse to using the safety belt, kills awful many people in your country each year!
Here in Germany, we have "Gurtanschnall-Pflicht", which means it's totally mandatory, compulsory for each driver to wear the safety belt! No matter if you drive just one meter with your car, you have to use the safety belt! This is a LAW here in Germany, and therefore every driver of a vehicle in traffic has to use the belt.
In Germany we have about 2000 people each year, who don't survive car crashes or other accidents on the German roads and streets.
2000 killed people, whereas in the United States you have still between 30.000 and 40.000 killed people each year in traffic!
The USA has only a 4 times bigger population than Germany, but has almost 15 to 20 times more !!! killed car drivers/people in traffic!
Therefore here in Germany, the car drivers who are cought by the police with no seat belts on, have to pay high fines. But in the USA it's still a "Kavalliersdelikt" as we say in Germany... How is this possible in such a "developed country" like the USA??
Sorry dude, but a lot of Americans are still fucking backward and overdue!
The 29 year old lady, who sadly didn't survive this crash vs. Mr. Lund is a good example for that.
Your stupid comment is fucking ridiculous, dude!
It's just a fact, that in 2022 there are still a lot of fucking stupid American car drivers who don't use the belt!

To this day i have back and neck issues and metal in my ankle from a fracture.. but i survived and i attribute that to my beloved 2019 Porsche Macan. Now i'm in a 2021 Macan GTS. I truly believed this car saved my life. Unfortunately for the other driver was drunk and died on impact. Seeing their mutilated car after the firefighters cut me out of the car is something that haunts me to this day. Im glad to hear you're ok! I remember how poor the 2001 Ford F-150 did in the offset test, and then how good the 2004 Ford F-150 did in the offset test.
On February 6, 2023 around 10:15pm I was driving on a (straight) road when I slid on a patch of black ice. The back end of my 2004 Ford F-150 started to fishtail to the right and I tried to counter steer but over corrected and the back end then swung to the left and turned more the 90° to the ditch. Once the back drivers side wheel went off the road it clipped the snow and the truck started to roll about 3 or 4 times down the ditch before it struck a tree and came to a rest on its wheels.
It knocked the wind out of me and I couldn’t breathe for about a minute. The passenger window shattered out and at some point my phone flew out of the truck. Because I couldn’t find my phone all I could do was keep the horn honking. I was also out in the middle of nowhere even though I was just 2 miles away from my house. The drivers side door was smashed in and jammed shut so once I was able to regain my strength to move I then had to crawl to the passenger side to get out. I eventually found my phone about 6 feet away in the snow. My glasses also flew off as soon as the truck started rolling and I still haven’t found them.
Originally I thought I just went straight down the hill. I then realized how aggressive the truck was being jolted when I was trying to find my phone and saw everything put away under the seats were laying everywhere in the back seat. It wasn’t until I looked around and saw the roof dented inwards and everything that was in the pick up bed scattered everywhere in the snow when I realized I actually rolled several times. You also can’t see yourself rolling. Basically all I could see through my windshield even with my glasses off was the whiteness of snow and a bunch of snow flying around as if you’re in a snow storm with no visibility. The only thing you can feel is yourself being jolted around and being pulled from your seat every time it rolled on the roof.
I was going about 50 to 55 mph but the there was no snow at all on the road. The only snow visible was on the grass and on the trees. It was even 35°F outside which is a heatwave for Minnesota especially for February. What I eventually learned was that it was raining all day while I was asleep. So the road was originally wet but as soon as the sun went down certain spots iced up. I obviously learned this the hard way, also the entire road in the 2 miles I drove were dry, however where I slid is a spot that’s shaded with a bunch of trees.
The truck was totaled unfortunately. I dealt with rib pain and chest pain as well as right wrist pain. I also experienced whiplash in my neck. A few days later I started to have pain on my head which probably was my water bottle hitting my head as that also flew out of the truck. I also did hit my head against the drivers side door too. In fact just 3 months after the wreck I went to the junkyard where the truck is sitting nowadays, and a huge strand of my hair is still stuck between the door frame and window. Thankfully I was able to walk away from the wreck though. I didn’t even get any major cuts. The only part of my body that was bleeding was my finger because I broke my fingernail. None of my airbags deployed either since nothing hit the front end directly as well as the 2004 Ford F-150 didn’t come with side airbags yet.

As someone involved in a fairly severe head on crash myself many years ago, all those involved in making our cars safer in a crash have my deepest thanks, whether that’s engineers, designers, senior management who make the right decisions on safety vs cost within car companies or bodies like this who test the vehicles and basically hold car manufacturers to account. Pleased to see that Mr Lund survived such an horrific crash. I hope the same applies to the other driver and any passengers involved. As regulations get ever tighter and technology and understanding improves, the safest car is often the newest model released. The fact he was driving the latest 5 series BMW probably helped save him. A 5 series from say 3 generations back may well have led to a different outcome. Sad really, as, like many, I love classic cars as well as new ones, but facts are facts whether we like it or not.

I'm so happy to see that he's okay after that crash, that looked scary. It really is amazing how far cars have come in terms of safety and the way they protect their occupants now, and a lot of that I think has to do with the IIHS's tests which have pretty much driven automakers to continue refining the safety of their cars. Then when most cars ace a certain test, they introduce a tougher one (like the small overlap and the recently introduced tougher side impact).

This type of story hits close to home for me. In early February, my wife rolled her 2017 Ford Explorer after encountering some black ice on the Autobahn here in Germany on her way to work. The front end of the truck impacted the berm on the right side of the road at about 65mph, spun the truck 180 degrees, then the truck rolled backwards up the side of the berm until it finally tipped onto its passenger side, and very nearly onto it's roof, slid for another 20 feet or so on it's side before coming to a stop. My wife walked away from that wreck with minor bruises to her neck from the seatbelt. The side curtain and seat-mounted airbags deployed and my wife was able to climb out of her door. Obviously the Explorer was totaled, but it did it's job and protected my wife. Thanks Mr. Lund for all the work you've done to make these cars safer.

But the strides made in crash safety and survivability are truly astonishing. We used to live on a main road that had lots of accidents...heard the "crash" one day and ran to see if I could help. A current generation-ish Mustang straight t-bone'd a big ass Suburban-type SUV and, at first glance, I thought I'd be cutting seatbelts...the Mustang was DESTROYED!!

Thank God you are still alive! I couldn't actually tell what make & model car you were driving, but blessedly all the safety features performed as designed! I, myself, was in a horrific crash only 2 blocks from home, on a rather snowy night. My year old 2002 "Honda Insight" 2 seat hybrid car slid on the slight curve of an unplowed, unsanded stretch of main road. The right, front fender clipped a massive tree, flattened a bus stop sign, then flipped onto its roof. The car spun around, flipped back onto its wheels, ten slid sideways across the intersection, taking out a street sign, stop sign, large blue mailbox, and newspaper vending machine. All the windows shattered, except the bubble hatchback. Discovered that the driver's airbag was round and pink, while the passenger's was square and white. And somehow, amazingly, the little rubber radio antenna on the roof, remained intact! HUH! Although I basically walked away without a scratch, the poor little aluminum "Insight" was "totalled". Worse yet was I had recently refinanced my loan through a credit union, from 6.9% bank interest down to 4.2%, saving me about $50 per month. However, at the time, the credit union didn't offer "gap insurance", which I had through the bank. So, because I still owed like $19,000+ on the loan, but my car insurance company decided the wreck was only worth $13,000, I literally had to use 2 high interest credit cards to pay off that additional $6,000!!! So not only did I lose my beloved little life-saving hybrid car, but my insurance rates went up, and my credit card debt became awful... UGH!!! 🤔 😮 😱 😡 😞

I am a student for an Automotive Design Engineering degree and sometimes I think my career will be much more shallow as compared to medicine or law, but when I remember how many people use their cars to travel every day and unfortunately many lost their lives while doing so, I realize that there is definetely certain depth in what I'm chasing. Thank God and BMW engineers for saving his life, let's hope we can soon reach this standard of safety for all cars in every market, not just the luxury one in North America.
