At the beginning, when the recording is first played for her, it's absolutely stunning to me that Whittaker's character doesn't see how ridiculous it is. Lol
Like playing a herd of elephants trumpeting and then asking if someone can translate, "Do you hear any words?"
No sir, I cannot translate a lion's roar into English. Lol
She's not solving it by seeing the book she wrote in the future, she's solving it by understanding their language. A language with no beginning or end, a constant loop. Their language embodies how they think, outside of linear time. Understanding their language, unlocks the ability to see time non-linearly. Their language is the "weapon".

@@westcoast7429 no, it gave her the ability to write the book. She fully understands the language before the aliens leave.
Seeing herself teaching the language was a turning point though; she suddenly understood it when she had that vision.
And Jóhann Jóhannsson did the music for both Sicario and this one, too. And in both films, the music is almost a character in itself. RIP, Jóhann. ❤
A Legend. The way he feels out the movie is beyond words. True emotion in those scores.

@@zgeorgedelydda8954 The song opening and closing the movie is indeed On the Nature of Daylight by Max Richter, but the actual OST is by Johannsson.
I truly ADORE this film. It resonates on SO many levels. The opening always gives me flashbacks to 9/11... the general.... surreality of existence in what feels like a living nightmare. And of continuing "normal" behavior (going to work etc) out of blind habit and no better options when it seems "normal" doesn't apply anymore.
They truly nailed the "alien-ness" of the aliens in this movie. Yet in the end, it is a very human story. This film hits the bullseye on every level. It holds up intellectually AMD emotionally. One of my all time favorites.
Love it. He said, not surprised china took the first step to violence. Wouldn´t surprise me if the US was the ones doing it in a real life scenario.
Learning the alien language, which has no past, present or future, changes her so that she can see future events. She uses that to convince the Chinese but it also allows her to see her future with him & her daughter but goes on with her life even though she knows the heartache to come. Brilliant movie!
She actually not just see the future, she experience it, she lives in the future.
The alien language don't have Past, present and future because they live and experience both past, present and future.
Because of this, to them the concept of Past, present and future doesn't exist.
Time isn't a straight line but a loop.
Beginning is the end.
And the end is the beginning.
She learn the language so she experience time the same way as the alien.
She chose to have kid even though knowing she will lost her kid because to her it already happened.
And since she experience Both past, present and future she never truly lost her kid.
Such a great movie. I was actually watching this when I found out one of my best friends had died. The theme song (On the Nature of Daylight) is incredibly moving and haunting.
A mother that has unconditional love for her child.
The Question Louise has to contemplate is not: "Should I have a Kid if I know it is going to die anyway?"
Time is very important for this. The Question is: "Do you want your Kid, that dies young, never to have existed?"
Also, it's not the same question we would face with, say, a DNA test prior to birth. Louise KNOWS Hannah already. She has all the memories of their time together, so she already loves her. I don't see how she could possibly have made any other decision.

such a thought provoking story. i feel like it's less 'she chose to have the baby anyway' and more 'the decision is already made'.
Ted Chiang's stories are on another level. Read his collection books they are so incredible it is hard to give a description that does them justice. The film is based on the story of your life and others.

This movie will become a sci-fi classic, Denis Villeneuve is one of the great directors of our time. It hits also much harder if you're a parent.
"Abott is death process" means that it died saving the scientists from the explosion.

Such an incredible work of art, very thought provoking as you said. The music too is really perfect for the film, the story, the tone and mood - an artistic achievement.
Would like to see you do The Mist. Think it would be a good movie for this kind of content.
Nominated for 8 Oscars including Best Picture, but won for Best Sound Editing.
And somehow Amy Adams got snubbed. From what I've read, she split her own vote with this and Nocturnal Animals. So unfair as this was an absolutely incredible performance.

War makes not heroes but orphans and widows." sorry I didn't put the accents, that would've taken forever. Assholes tough, they could sub it. I think Shang kinda got there, but not quite as Amy Adams.

You said you weren't a huge fan of Amy Adams but that would depend on what movies you've seen her in, having now watched this. After seeing her performance in Hillbilly Elegy I thought she'd be the perfect choice to play Janis Joplin in a biopic...

In the beginning earth discovers as many as 8 ALIEN CRAFTS HAVE ARRIVED, and you were concerned about the military being discrete when picking up the professor?!😂 That was funny.

The Arrival, Blade Runner 2046 and Dune. Villeneuve has established himself firmly into heavy weight Scifi directors.
When Costello tells Louise that Abbott is in death process; he died. The bomb they planted killed Abbbott as he sacrificed himself to push them away and protect them.

You haven't watched "Up", then. I couldn't believe they would ever start a kid's movie like they did that one.

The awareness of things we can’t believe to be possible … and how they may have already happened to us. It may be the Marker that they WILL happen. The sign that the event, having happened; is echoing backward … Telling us to move forward- in that direction- toward that future you feel in your gut; in your bones.

imho It ranks up there with the original "The Day the Earth Stood Still."
It was also cool because it showed humanity would last at least 3,000 more years and we would be advanced enough to help these aliens in their time of need. I always wondered if anyone else learned it to the degree she did.
People usually misinterpret the General’s wife’s dying words due to the Mandarin dialect version. Properly translated her words were:
“Out on bail fresh out of jail, California dreaming. Soon as I stepped on the scene, I’m hearing hoochies screaming”
Those glasses are 1 step closer to being like Ready Player 1.

I would "love" to see a WAY more advanced & intelligent specie FAR more than anything on this plant to come on a vist ....

So, if the aliens don’t understand linear time and effectively don’t live within linear time then where in the hell are they from? This universe as far as we know works on linear time. Cause and effect have no meaning without time as we understand it. Even living very close to a huge mass or a black hole would only serve to slow time near the object but not make everything happen all at once in as would happen with non-linear time. If I’m barking up the wrong tree, someone set me straight please. 😊
Good questions, and like all similar plots it has to break down at some point in relation to the real world. But stepping away from the particular details of the movie, it's interesting to consider that the concept of a being transcendent over time--making time to that being "non-linear", though not to the rest of creation--has been an integral element of primary worldviews since way before sci-fi. As far as causality, we can run into similar questions in everyday life: Did Ophelia die of her own will--or Shakespeare's? When did she die--during the 1st performance, or has it not yet happened, or was it when the ink left the quill pen? Of course the example is not "real", but I bring it up to show that our minds being able to bend at least a little ways around such issues may be an indicator that there is One who stands outside of time in a way that we cannot.
@@agedp8386 The other issue with this is that it would also mean that depending on how you view time you can see things that haven't happened in someone elses liner timeline. If that's true then you can forget free will, anything you will do has already been "written" or at the very least has happened already, so back to cause and effect. 🙂
Thanks for responding. Oh yes, the free will questions inevitably come up--but I'm not going there in response to this film; I was only saying that plot element gives an imperfect reminder of what many of us hold to be a core truth proposition about reality. But if such propositions include divine sovereignty over space and time, they also preclude that being true of created beings, even tender-hearted heptapods! 🙂
