During a training session. In Shotokan . Remember a black belt trying to throw full power punches and nearly tags me by an inch or less , which he was being a bully with me because I was a white belt. But he made the mistake of not realizing I'm already trained in boxing, kickboxing etc. So I warned him, to slow down and not throw everything into punches so close to my face as one slip , it's gonna be me getting hurt. And I'm trying to learn the techniques, and use only Shotokan of course, and blocking these shots that are coming were once again full power, full speed in me as a novice. And they would leave marks every block. I was making sure it's sparring and far enough away from him I can't hit him even if he steps in range by mistake and not all I have. I'm throwing convincingly , but also not trying to ko the guy. And so as this happens, I stick my forearm outward a bit so the blade is catching him and hurts. But it's only his momentum that is actually causing injury and not hurting me . He got mad and mouthed and stopped the session telling me not to do that. But I once again said , we are not in a fight rn. But your throwing as hard as you can , and if you want my blocks to stop hurting, slow down and it won't. If I missed at all , I'm gonna get hit hard . Hes lucky I didn't head butt his hand and break it like a street fight . But of course he starts again and got even more aggressive, so I used my street fighting experience and made sure the block matches his evergy as I'm only trying to deflect the strikes , and he's hurting himself . Because he did it a third time, and was mad at me because he's loosing to a white belt I turned the blade out again like checking a leg kick and got it to land closer to my elbow . And he got a giant welt from me and that was the last he ever threw at me or trained with me . Three a diva fit , but the sensei was watching it , and saw he's a certified black belt trying to be the dojo bully . That was the end of the session , with him holdng his arm and big red marks. So he " didn't see anything" Bet he didn't bully anyone in the gym again , or so I hope. Most of the others had no combat experience and a grown man , who's being aggressive like that , he needed to be humbled. My last Muay Thai trainer also had an ego problem and threatend to ko me if I ever disrespect him , after I got the better of him in a training session . So we never fought, but that attitude ruined the sport for me. And I never trained again with him or anyone. Most people are great. But a couple bad apples like that and you can get seriouslt hurt simple because someones ego is out of control. Or outside influences.

There's alot of context missing here. Denis is a bully. He was trying to intimidate one of Paddy's teammates. I saw Denis on a fight reality show and trust me, not a nice guy. Paddy not letting go of the check shows that this shouldn't have been allowed, way too personal. I think smokers are fine, not everyone has the opportunity to fight on a card... and it can be a step below competing in front of a large crowd with more stakes.... but not as a way to deal with a beef... i think beefs can be handled thru sparring (especially grappling where you can go harder and still keep it safe), but there has to be a ref or coach watching over... and there has to be boundaries which are mutually agreed upon and if they get overstepped repeatedly it gets stopped... actually getting the aggression out in a fair manner abiding by rules can establish some mutual respect... but not just fighting agressively with no rules in mind.

You have an interesting take on this that most of us cannot fathom, Gabriel, because you have been a professional fighter. I was thinking that the gym is a great place to settle a "beef" with someone. I'm not going to sit here and pretend I'm a tough guy or well - trained, but I do a little judo, jiu jitsu, and overall MMA. Again, I readily admit I'm bad at all of it, but I do find it fun and fascinating. Having gotten all of that out of the way, I have had to have a few fights in my life (all of them as a kid/adolescent). And I occasionally find myself in a situation where a fight is possible. If you do have a conflict with someone, I think settling it in the gym is much better than doing it on the "street." Just too many bad variables in a non controlled environment. Again, I get it is different for a pro. You guys fight for money and do not want to take the chance of getting an injury that prevents you from competing. For us average "Joes," I think it is a reasonable way to settle disputes.

For "average Joe's" to settle things like this and for it to get to the point of choking someone out - even though they're tapping, is dumb. Why risk jail time or potentially killing someone due to bad sportsmanship/ego?
Sure, have a respectful fight, shake hands at the end, but don't go that far.
