For my POTA activations I use a Raspberry pi and a tablet, the tablet can use VNC to mirror the raspberry pi desktop. It works pretty well. I have a single 7ah battery that powers the 5W radio, the pi, and the tablet for 6+ hours at 50% TX FT8 load.

I have been re-charging my laptops off-grid for years. For many laptop models, even Macbook Pros, one can buy a car charger with a cigarette lighter plug that will charge the laptop using the car's 12v battery. I use this type of charger with my off-grid shack 12v system. Some laptops need more than 12v, like one of my lenovo laptops No problem. I use a step-up buck transformer. Similarly I can power my LED displays using a 12v source. As long as the sun shines and my electronics don't fail me, I have power for everything.

That was great. i have been off grid for years now. even my home. I have a few laptops and I use the USB C trigger plug like you showed. but the blue tip. 20V for HP . and some outers . works great. What I do you did not cover. I have a USB C PD and USB A QC 65 watt PD port to 12-24V I use. mount in 1 1/8 in hole rung DC power to it. great for RV car and battery go box . I put them in my POTA battery box. I have a few. works great . most laptops can run USB C PD with that trigger plug or cord. I have both . with the RFI I just put ferrite on all PD cords and is not a problem. been doing this for years now. even works with 24V battery box that I just made for a HAM . RM Italy 20 to 30V KL 805 amp 600 watt PEP max. for portable use. we just got a 3 ft snow storm and waiting for the rest to come in. that 24V LiFePO4 battery box is 50 AH . has USB C 65W PD . X2 . running lap top . KL 805 amp and a IC 705 with PD 12v trigger cord from USB C PD. all from a 24V go box. my first 24V build. I run 12V my self. what you showed works for RV use as well. 73's

Beware, not all barrel plug are center positive, some positive can be at the outside. Check the diagram on the wall wart itself. Also, not all PD charger/battery do 12V, since it is "optional" in the USB Power Delivery specification.

Thanks for the great video! I’ve been interested in solar charging for a bit, but haven’t jumped in yet. Film is the way to go. I realize you’re talking about Tx gear, but I’m just delving into SDR and a nice portable package for me is my Android tablet and an older 28k mAh Anker that does USB-B. Looking to add one of those nifty power rolls when I can decide whether to invest in the one with the battery or not. Thinking I might just get the cheaper one and charge up my Anker with it. Of course there’s always HT 🙄

If you already own an M1 MacBook, they're not only insanely efficient, like working on offline PDF and Word docs for a business week on a single charge. But they also abide by the full USB-C standards (not all USB-C is the same), meaning it'll charge at 3 amps at 5v, 9v, 12v, or 20v. I've even plugged it in to the little classic 10 watt Apple charger, and it will charge at a painful rate. The Steam Deck is also the same way, with the added benefit of being able to install W11 on it, or on a micro SD card. The RPi is the lowest power option, but it takes some work to get a screen and inputs attached to it. Unfortunately, most cheap HTs only like 5v, even if it's USB-C. I'm to the point though where I won't buy an HT now unless it's USB-C and CHiRP compatible. Just so I don't have 15 different cradles and cables and softwares.

ALLPOWERS SP012 Solar Panel 100W despite not showing it on amazon and their own sales support not knowing about it... the currently shipping models have a USB C PD port as far as i can tell. it charged my iphone up very fast. I haven't tested it yet with laptop charging via usb c and solar but i imagine it could do it if your laptop was low enough draw or was powered off while charging. Panel has only put out about 60 watts when I've been testing but I've only tested a couple of times. During full sun it might get a bit higher, but don't expect the full 100 watts.

Not all laptops with USB-C can take power by PD. My parent's HP laptop has that situation - I had to go look it up at HP to confirm, but yes it has USB-C but can only take power in through the barrel connector.

@@BenjaminHeyser yes, and they do make cables for that too. With a Barrel on one end and a USB-C on the other, The USB-C connector has a special chip that tells the USB-C power charger, "Hey im a laptop, gimme 20V so I can charge please" ;) My cable for DELL is like that

Josh, thanks for the great idea about the 12v power bank and USB C barrel adapters. As an EDC enthusiast are you familiar with the XTAR PB2S? It is a power bank that holds either 18650 or 21700 cells. There is an updated version capable of 12v PD. I've been using the old version for a couple years now to store backup flashlight cells and charge random devices while travelling. I think I'm going to spring for the updated version and some barrel connectors for my jankopotomous and VX6R (since it charges over 12v). It is also on sale rn at illumn (a good place to get legit li ion cells)for $17. I would provide a link but it seems like it made my previous comment get deleted. Check it out and let me know what you think!

I use a Lenovo 100e w/Win (rugged educational model) sometimes available on sale for $100. Uses USB C for power. I have a cig lighter outlet on my Morningstar charge controller, insert a USB C PD adapter plug and I'm charging. I also have an Anker power brick that has USB C PD output that works. I can also run the Anker with 30w solar/input via USB C and output/charge the Lenovo at the same time.

Most of the modern laptops are ~19 (and some change) volts and guess what? modern power banks are capable of USBC power delivery at 20V. You can buy cheap PD negotiation devices and select multiple voltages from them. I have one in my 'power kit' that defaults to negotiating 20v from USBC PD devices and that means I can charge most any laptop from most any decent power bank. 12V is an option from PD as well.

I learned this week that you can drop a T-mobile 5G sim into the evolve 3 and get online with no problems

    •  7 месяцев назад +1

It will only get online at 4G because the Evolve III doesn't have a 5G modem. But it will work if yours contains the modem. Some do not, and so far as I know you can't tell from the packaging, which you won't get to see anyway because they keep them in the storage area behind the pickup desk.

Micro Center doesn't ship, ding dong

    •  7 месяцев назад +1

Micro Center ships many items. But the Evolve III Maestro is not one of them; they're in-store only. Other things that are in-store only include CPUs, graphics cards, Raspberry Pi boards, and some monitors. Some but not all laptops can be shipped; the cheap ones discussed here are not among them.
The Maestro is not currently the cheapest laptop at Micro Center; that would be the ASUS BR1100CKA-YS02 with similar specs (but no LTE card slot); it sells for $70. I don't know whether it will charge from a 12V supply.
