I studied biotechnology for my masters degree and we discussed at length logistic growth and rates of infection, and I just can't help but ask are we just playing real life plague Inc and people are just that silly they don't understand the risk.

it is actually about safety for some people if you have a good fitting k95 mask like me it is possible to protect yourself and now at this point i feel it is fine that it is a choice in most places but if you want protect yourself or live around high risk people the options are there. i have not gotten covid these 3 years which is pretty nice.
another reason why they do work is k95 and p100 masks have been used around highly infectious diseases like Tuberculosis. covid is a incredibly infectious disease now with some ranking it just below meazles (these seem to just kinda be estimates and not a full fact) we do now have some good treatments and vaccines to reduce severe cases along with numbers way down which is really nice.
The trick is to have the moral authority, then you pretty much have all of the authority.
When AOC was asked about straight up lying she said that she doesn’t have to tell the truth because she has moral authority.

Not being a sports fan, the only rendition of Magic Johnson I'm familiar with is from South Park and not knowing about this particular controversy, it took me almost to the chorus to figure out where it was going. Another gem, Remy.

Yes, MJ tested positive for AIDS, and anybody that didn't want to play with him in the Olympics and get sweated on was some sort of monster, along with everybody that proposed anything like a quarantine (even a sexual one) or "social distancing" in response to a disease that AT THAT TIME had a near 100% death rate (reduced not by a vaccine, but by palliatives, which we're banned for mentioning in the context of Covid). Non of this is meant to rag on Magic (it's impossible to dislike Magic Johnson), but to illustrate that the response to both these epidemics was predicated on politics. In AIDS, the main victim group was a politically favored group, and not enough people were affected to make for much of a power grab. Covid was less discriminate, so the power grab was the only dynamic. So much for "following the experts", because it is obviously the case that the fact that the political radicals control the "experts" paychecks IS relevant, after all.
@@digitalnomad9985 Yeah, but the South Park HIV episode with Magic Johnson wasn't about any of that. The episode was poking fun at the fact that if you were rich and could afford all of the latest treatments HIV wasn't a death sentence. And IIRC, the episode did portray Magic Johnson in a good light.
Regarding your attempt to compare people's response to the HIV epidemic with the COVID response: I think the most important comparison is people's irrational fear in the face of possible death; especially when it concerns something like a virus that people can't see, here, smell nor understand.
These are getting better and better.
Remember the first rule of COVID: Most of the people you thought you knew are dumber than you thought.

The very next day my kid's sitting masked in class as long as Gov. Used Car Salesman was at at Super Spreader Event....maskless.
I think there was a director of the Teachers Union there too celebrating the Rams winning mask-less. Public schools are evil.

@@pupasarus If someone has HIV they have to be medicated before their condition progresses to AIDS, because after it becomes AIDS, a disease will kill you it's just a question of which one comes first. This is because the immune system in people with AIDS is so far diminished that it cannot be restored.
Edit: A vaccine doesn't really work if you don't have immune system that functions at all...

I'm a Patriot. I love my country. I've spent a considerable amount of my adult life fighting our foreign wars. I used to make fun of people with bumper stickers that said "Love my country, fear my government." Over the past few years, I've realized that not only were these people right, they weren't taking the problem seriously enough. It's a sad day when you lose faith in your government. But, it's necessary for everybody who still loves this great country.
He's the guy in charge because the media teach voters not to cast law-changing Libertarian spoiler votes. When the Guy in Charge is there because his opponent would have beaten him except for that 3% Libertarian Party vote, he listens to Libertarians.
I was waiting in line at the post office recently. Two public school teachers (based on the context of their conversation) were talking about how much they actually are fine with the masks because it gives them another lever of control over the kids. Get your kids out of public school, these cat-ladies are the worst kind of authoritarian.

I literally cannot remember the last time I put on a mask. The few times I did was for doctors appointments. I remember in 2020 I walked into Walmart and they said, 'hey, you are supposed to wear a mask.' I said, 'okay.. well I'm not going to can I still come shop?' They were like, 'well yeah.. but..' and I thought it was hilarious. Just said let me stop ya there bud and proceeded to shop.
