  • The word Fascism is often used to describe the extreme nationalist and anti-immigrant sentiments that seem to be on the rise across the world. But what are the similarities between today’s far-right movements and the brutal ideology that was born in Italy a century ago? In this film, Italian-born journalist and Al Jazeera senior presenter, Barbara Serra, examines her own family’s links to Benito Mussolini’s regime to see if Fascism really is resurfacing in Italy today. Barbara’s grandfather was the fascist mayor of a key mining town in Sardinia which was used as a place of exile and punishment for political dissidents and Prisoners of War. While tracing back her family’s involvement in the regime, Barbara also discovers a direct link between her grandfather and Germany’s Nazi leadership - a revelation made even more poignant by the fact that Barbara’s young son is half Jewish. How much does its fascist past influence Italy’s current political situation? By speaking to Far-Right leader Matteo Salvini and Holocaust survivor Liliana Segre among others, this film examines the current anti-immigration sentiment, rising intolerance and the attacks on a free media to see if these are warnings that the country where the word Fascism was coined is indeed bound to repeat its history.

I want to say thanks to Barbara Serra for this documentary that hit me in the heart. As a sardinian woman, I’m deeply shocked to know that our beautiful Island hostess a work and prison camp where enemies of the fascist regime were sent. That said, I am heartened to know that like Barbara Serra, there are relatives of influential fascist personalities, who are anti-fascists and fight against this italian cancer everyday of their life. Thanks again and, if one day I’ll be lucky enough to meet you, I will thank you in person.

While Mussolini often equated “international Jewry” with both communism and capitalism, and Zionism with Bolshevism, there was no ideological antisemitism in the country. Italian fascism was not German Nazism. Mussolini’s Jewish mistress and muse over twenty years was the art critic, Margherita Sarfatti. His minister of finance in the 1930s was Guido Jung, a Sicilian Jew, while the banker Ettore Ovazza founded the La nostra bandiera (“Our Flag”) newspaper - required reading for all fascists.
From the outset, there were Jews in Mussolini’s inner circle. 230 took part in the fascist march on Rome in 1922 which resulted in his coming to power with the full approval of the king. The Israeli writer and academic, Dan Segre, recalled the image of his father dressed in the fascist uniform of fez with tassle, golden belt and silver dagger.
Jews began to desert the party when fascists kidnapped and murdered the outspoken socialist politician, Giocomo Matteoti, in 1924. Even so, Mussolini continued to have Jewish supporters who tried to turn a blind eye to his gradual alignment with Hitler in the 1930s and who were rendered speechless by the publication of the anti-Jewish laws. Many wrote to Mussolini expressing their “truthful fascist faith and endless love for the Duce”. One appeal to the king asked: “Can your majesty remain indifferent to the cry of indignation and of suffering that comes spontaneously from the heart of each of your Jewish subjects?”.

Again, have we asked why this idea of politicians keep repeating, if not only to be able to feed the ego of thier needs and those allied to them . Yet at every corner of the world today is clear and white as a milk, we witness the same ideology. Oh men I have to be on the highway too, so you, and you, and you over there may join to harvest for ourselves the security, the power to handle our issues , settle in peace and to provide for our needs and wants for all was given the opportunity, dignity and right over nature, but few made greedy prevailing principle of their hearts . Not really sure why but some of the respondents below this talked about Europeans accepting people from other countries. There is a finite amount of immigration any country can support. The things that reduce the amount of immigrant a country can take in are.
1.Your country has a less than replacement birth rate (if you care to keep your ideals and culture).
    2. If your country has concerns about your standard of living (you care what it is like) you can only take in so many immigrants.
    3. Are the the immigrants willing to assimilate into your culture? If they are not plan for conflicts and plan to spend more money on riot police and money on repairs after riots.
Not saying any of these are pleasant but they are all facts.

the rise of the retro-right is based in deliberately obscured and manipulated
memories of the "good" things that supposedly existed back before
    fascism "went off the rails..."
"before it aligned with Hitler it was good for Italy", the new prophets of hate say...
the problem with that is that all of the things that they say were accomplished,
like full employment, and the suppression of the Mafia, were accomplished by
creating huge unnecessary armed forces that Italy couldn't afford to maintain,
    but nonetheless were sent overseas
    to kill and conquer,
and by recruiting the mafia into the fascist party as streetfighters and enforcers,
to maim and kill the unwanted, the outcasts and the pariahs...
as they do today, it served the purposes of the rich to funnel money and political support
to those who instilled hatred and fear for the purpose of diverting the masses of the people
from seeing that it those very elites who are robbing them

Ethnicity - the fact or state of belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition.
Jews have a common cultural tradition, so yes, they ARE an ethnic group. I think you mean race and in that case yes you are right, there is no such thing as a Jewish race.
      Race vs ethnicity:
Race includes phenotypic characteristics such as skin color, whereas ethnicity encompasses cultural factors such as nationality, tribal affiliation, religion, language and traditions of a particular group.
Ethnicity is generally used in reference to a person’s cultural markers, not their physical appearance.

I didn't like it at all, too emotionally manipulative without much analysis and historical perspective. A grandpa with some significant fascist past is a relatively common story to many Italians, me included. What the documentary should have explained is why fascism was not uprooted from the Italian society after the war, like it happened in Germany with nazism. Why so many fascists were allowed to keep their position of power, particularly in the police, carabinieri, and judicial system. For that, we have to thank our USA occupiers/allies, aka the USA with the help of the UK, who enlisted fascists and war criminals for their dirty war against Italian socialists and communists (those who opposed fascism and often paid a price for it).
It should have also analysed what led to the growth of fascism in the last 30 years. Indifference is not enough to explain it, neither the peddling of hatred. Populists and hate-mongers found a fertile ground, powerful allies (Berlusconi above all), and virtually no opposition. In a society every day more divided into haves and have-nots, the extreme right was the only one who talked to the have-nots. Albeit distorting facts and presenting simplistic solutions, they were the only ones who had some kind of unified message. The other parties, from centre to left, were more busy fighting each other than proposing solutions.
Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, there is no alternative to the neoliberist militaristic dogma that has impoverished so many peoples and nations. It is in this ideological vacuum that neo-fascists are prospering in Italy. And not only in Italy, see for example France (Le Pen), Germany (AfD), Spain (Vox), the UK (Farage), the USA (Trump), and so on.

Everyone is saying today that fascism was born in Italy, forgetting the fact that African Americans were already in a fascist America for more than a century even before the 1st WW, just because it wasn't called fascism doesn't mean it wasn't fascism. The USA is and has always been the resting place of all fascist beliefs, today Americans will try to convince you that they have done away with their fascist beliefs that were deeply rooted in their political and economic system, but every single day even their politicians continue to refer to people from Russia and China as simply "Communists" or "commies" with the sole purpose (don't be fooled) of dehumanizing or degrading them. The idea that fascism translates only to "hate towards people who are not naturally like you" is just stupid, fascism is; hating someone or separating yourself from someone or harming someone or wishing evil upon someone or thinking bad about someone, being afraid of someone ONLY and ONLY because that person does not look like you or share your ideas or come from the same place as you. Trust me guys, I should know fascism well, I have lived in Lybia and I live currently in Italy.

Italians are mostly not white, especially in the South. In a poisoned world, where the lie of white supemacy has poisoned the minds of people all over the earth, Italians try to prove their whiteness by being super racist. They don't hate black people and others, they hate themselves. Salvini looks like an Arab and his proclaiming his whiteness by hating North and West Africans is him really just hating himself.

@@lf1496 It's stupid to use the concept of "White" to describe racism in non wasp countries. In Italy there is a lot of "nationalities" racism, non skin racism. The same people that are against black africans today, were against eastern europe migrants ten and twenty years ago, and their skin is pretty much the same of ours. And yes, we are very mixed, we had greeks, phoenicians, arabs, germans and vikings fighting and colonizing our shores, can't expect us to be a pale army like finnish.

@@Basilisks82 I have lived in Rome for 12 years, my husband is Roman Sicilian. There is a strain of white identity Fascism that Salvini with Lega and other parties like Casa Pound are explicitly promoting. They are openly saying that Italy should be "white." l agree, Italians are a diverse mixed group. My husband has both North African and West African DNA in his diverse genetic mix, and he is 100% Italian on both sides. But the whiteness idea from Northern Europe and America has sadly spread to Italy. The shooting of 6 Africans in Macerata by Luca Traini, a vowed white supremacists, shows the sick idea of whiteness has infected Italy as well.
