    So he has experience with dirt bikes. Why did the dude say it's his first time on a bike. Of course he learned to ride in 15 mins. Just the differences between a bike and a dirt bike.

      +rex1030 If you have ridden a dirt bike you have never been on an actual bike since bikes are more known for Sports bikes and if you go on that with dirt bike knowledge then you will crash first time riding it

      +PwnsJones I think that makes it easier to ride a bike but by no means is it exactly the same. He was immediately able to turn and looked more confident than most I have ever seen at a course, except those that rode dirt bikes. You are a good teacher. Would be great to see a total beginner who has never ridden a bike of any kind.

      +lcicenine In countries like China, most of those videos you see are from user error since as she/he stated there are not many teachers around.
      Lots of uneducated vehicle operators + not great road signage/safety = lots of crashes.

    I just bought a Ninja 300 today and already, after 10 minutes of riding around my neighborhood, I'm getting so good at it. First time on a motorcycle. Never rode a dirtbike. It is way easier than I thought it would be. The only thing I'm making mistakes at is rev matching on the downshifts but I will get the hang of it by tomorrow lol.

    I learned to ride for the first time on an 04 ninja 250 named Tsubaki that i bought from a shady craiglist guy i met in a walmart parkinglot. I bought the bike and learned to ride while i drove it home an hour away on the interstate. Was completely terrifying and exilerating at the same time. It was instant love. Now i ride Tsubaki every day for the past 5 weeks even though it's barely above freezing here right now in the day. LIVE TO RIDE-RIDE TO LIVE!

    some people wouldnt mind the constant stream of info hes trying to impart on him, but that approach isnt th ebest generally. Let the dude get a feel for the bike first. Dont immediately start asking him to do small trivial maneuvers. The guy handled it well but next time id let the person get comfortable with learning and riding for a few minutes.

  • @Oliver-jv5ww
    @Oliver-jv5ww 9 лет назад +10

    i feel like alot of the learning curve on bikes is just operating a manual gearbox. if you already know how to do that its just learning how to do it with a hand lever and foot gear selector. I want to learn how to ride and the other day went to a motorsport dealership to sit on some bikes and the first thing i noticed, which I didnt expect was the sheer size of these 'little' sportbikes. I could touch the ground just fine but was just surprised by how big of vehicles they are to actually sit on

    • @dsp4392
      @dsp4392 9 лет назад

      John Doe As counter-intuitive as it sounds, operating a manual gearbox is one of the easiest parts of operating a motorcycle, especially (as you mentioned) if you've already driven a manual car. Slow speed maneuvers (tight u-turns, turns from a standstill, etc) constitute the bulk of the learning curve for new (and some older) riders. Once you've mastered the basics, proper throttle control and good leaning technique (counter-steering + weight shifting) become the main challenges.

    • @Alexandertryk
      @Alexandertryk 9 лет назад

      dsp4 I agree. Where I live in Denmark we all drive manual gearboxes, both on bikes as well as in cars, there is really no huge market for automatic gearboxes. Learning how to shift on a bike is easy, you get it within the first hour of driving - it all comes down to cludge-controll and throttle at the beginning. As soon as your master the cludge you can make those small turns much easier and then - as you say - from there, it's all about leaning techniques. A lot of people I talk to think your steer a bike with the handlebar ;-)

  • @Alteriukas

    I remember my first motorcycle lesson on such light bike. I thought it was so easy. Then on a second lesson i got normal motorcycle that weights a lot more. Dropped it in 10 minutes 😁. Weight matters a lot.

  • @koofdome
    @koofdome 6 лет назад +2

    I gotta say, driving a manual trans car helped me a lot. I never sat on a bike in my life. But with a few hours of practice per day, by day 3 I felt good enough to go on the main streets at 35-40mph in traffic. Without any manual transmission experience it would take longer for sure. The shifting is what gets people, especially feathering the clutch.

    • @kattmilk
      @kattmilk 2 года назад

      Same here! I've always had sports cars, and manual shifting really helps your brain adjusts to the shifting on motorcycle bike. When I first took my lessons on a Honda Rebel, I thought the shifting would be a nightmare, but actually was easier than I thought. I'm hoping to get this Ninja next though.

    • @davidgesell
      @davidgesell 2 года назад

      I agree. I learning how to drive a car on a manual and it really is the same feel while on a bike. You are already keen to listening to the motor and transmission and how they are working together. Any bogging down or stuttering and you know something has to change. Glad my mom made me learn on a manual transmission. Thought it was a lost art until i got a bike and realized "hey this is still a thing!"

    The first time I rode my bike I rode around my block for like 30 minutes. There is no way you will feel comfortable riding in traffic with 30 minutes of riding. I rode around my neighborhood for a week before I rode in the city. Takes about 1-2 months to get it good, after that you slowly pick up something new. Takes about five minutes to learn how to ride it and get it moving but takes at least a month to feel comfortable.

    Took me literally about 1-5 minutes to learn on GSXR 600 back in 07. Got it off the truck friends said this is off you shift, and I got on and went off on my way. Super easy to ride, and everyone should do it, picking up new pre-owned Harley today actually in just a few hours. Only a Sportster but it's my first Harley so not bad.

    The whole, should I get a small bike to start with or the one I really want, question is fueled by people thinking that they're going to marry their first bike. Get a small used bike off of craigslist for less than $2000, ride it for 500 miles and then sell it for just about as much as you paid for it. Those small bikes sell fast and after a certain point depreciate in value very slowly. Think of it as an extended rental. Then get the one you really want.

    Heck, I have/had a dirt bike and drive/drove a manual truck, why not when starting while going up a hill obviously be in first but find where the clutch grabs and that'll put tension on the engine which you can then release the break and just ease out the clutch when you wanna go... that's how I do it at stops in the truck (on slants).
    Sure you wanna use your breaks commonly and not wear the clutch but it's still something that's good to know, and depending on where you don't always wanna have to focus on both the brake and clutch. In my opinion.

    First bike I ever drove was a 400cc dirtbike when I was 15 (in 1995). I didn't even drive a 50cc moped before, just straight to a 400cc. It was from a friends dad. Al I knew was how to get into 1st gear, twist the throttle and release the clutch. I almost crashed seconds in lol.

    correction. I once turned too slowly and almost hit a curb, motorcycle was going to go down but i kicked my leg to the ground and re balanced. It did hurt my knee but I was extremely slow, the weight is what probably hurt. STILL. I stopped my bike from dropping mid turn and continued down the road. I did turn wrong which means i shouldnt have had to put my foot down, but it did save me.
    there ar erare situations where you put your foot down if you cant figure out another way out of things

    I had never ridden a bike before. The first lesson the teacher thought me how to shift and work the clutch, within 10 mins i was riding on the road behind the instructor for 45 mins.
    In the netherlands you have 2 exams and 1 theorie. one for learning to master the bike and one for on the road. got both in 5 lessons each. got my license with one lesson a week within 2.5 months. first bike was a 600 supersport lol no probs with it whatsoever. am looking for a liter bike now instead of my 600R and next to my 1100 shadow ace

    I drive a manual transmission car and its completely second nature now. But on a car you can slap it right into neutral. When riding a bike can you just hold in the clutch and shift from say 5 to 1 or do you have to let out for each individual gear?!?!

    • @yogilipe28
      @yogilipe28 9 лет назад +22

      yes, you don't need to let out the clutch every time, just hold it and go to any gear

      William Jeffrey Sometimes the gears will jam and you won't be able to go either up or down, especially if you have just stalled your bike. It is always better to do gear changes in a step wise fashion.

    • @JohnDoe-xu7xu
      @JohnDoe-xu7xu 9 лет назад

      Oscar Felipe Lozano López not necessarily. Depends on the bike. Bc on the 94 gs 250 you have to do it individually

  • @darianneumayer188

    at slow sped it's not gas to stabilize you chipping the throttle is what causes problems but when you go really slow but you pull in your clutch and push the back break ever so slightly that will stabilize the bike

    When in doubt throttle out. Tell him 70 percent of brake power is in front brake lever side. Also how to pull clutch n cut all power to wheel when stopping or parking then throw neutral until u get it down straight.

    Not sure if it's been mentioned, but in low speed tight turns, you lean "away" from the turn, not into it. The figure 8 box for the MSF is way to tight to turn a bike like that.

    About to finish my first season of riding. I took some riding courses before i got my license but sadly my teacher wasnt nearly as good as yours. He almost came off as it was just another day at the office. I'd ask him about things I was doing wrong and he'd just go "I'll let you know if you make some" but I would sometimes fail to shift to second gear and hit neutral before going to 2nd, I mean even I noticed it and he didnt mention it until I asked him about it. Luckily the last two sessions was with another guy who was really really good.
    For people watching this who want to start riding. I was in your shoes earlier during the summer when I just got my license and work on getting comfortable at slow speeds. That's whats really hard about riding imo. Sharp turns at slow speed makes balancing a bigger factor. Main two things is shifting and slow speeds. At faster speeds its easier to turn since you just counter steer.

    I tried riding my brothers 300 the other day for the first time. Neither of us have our licenses and thought it would be a good idea to practice before taking the msf course so we could be more confident. We both dropped the bike on the grass. Too much brake and I lost balance and tipped it on its side. I've never ridden even a dirt bike so it's a foreign concept to me. I've ridden pedal bikes my whole life. Hopefully I can get the hang of it.

      Just taught a friend of mine, she is 5'2 & 100 pounds. She can only touch tip toe on one side. She did surprisingly well. So it is very possible for you to learn. Just try to learn on a lighter bike. If u have any questions just ask.
