  • I tested six grinders ranging in price from zero dollars to you all the way up to almost $7000. I tested the grind size using a particle analyzer, trying to determine if a consistent particle size actually affects the taste of the coffee. #Kruve #Lighttells #coffeegrinders

    I gave up all if not most of the suggested (methods 8 and up) years ago. Today, I use Kirkland pre-ground dark roast Colombian and a Cuisinart drip machine. Sometimes I even use the timed feature meaning the grounds it over night exposed to the air. For me it makes a fine cup of coffee and I didn't have to sell a kidney to purchase a regiment of equipment. The improvement achieved using all the best practices is marginal and I just don't have a fine enough pallet to appreciate. Just MHO.

    Oh I just love you - when you say you researched something, it really means something. As someone who goes down the rabbit hole often, I so appreciate your efforts. So George, what are your thoughts about the Jura machines? Our coffee is 2 shots of 2 ounces of espresso with an 8 ounce shot of cappucino with 8 seconds of steamed Elmhurst oat milk. The grinder grinds the beans on demand, so there are 2 types of grinds used. Be honest - as thats the only way I know you to be - what are your thoughts about coffee machines like Jura's S8 (I've had it for a while and know there are newer models). Thanks and love from FL

      Agreed. George is the real deal on YT and in life. He not only cares about what he produces and puts his name on/behind, but he takes the time to reply/respond to almost every question or comment on here. Old-school, throw-back, or just Gentleman, whatever you want to call it. There needs to be more of him in the world and btw he should be getting tons more "views" but we all know YT plays its games. You should check out his book "Ferry Tales", a great/funny/heart-warming read too and I'm not much on reading lol. Class act.
      "George did not sponsor this comment in any way, nor do I get any kick-back from the manufacturer" - sorry but had to add the George patented disclaimer 😄

    What burr set were you using with the Ode? I’ve found that different burr geometry gives not only a different particle size distribution, but a radically different flavor profile. For normal use I prefer the new Ode burrs while a set of much more expensive aftermarket burrs is great for really separating the different flavor components at the cost of a much brighter cup.
    The second thing I’d point out is that different roasts really want different grind sizes. I tend to prefer a finer overall grind for lighter roast, more acidic coffees (e.g. most Central American and African coffees) and a slightly coarser grind for heavier dark roasts.
    But that’s often a matter of personal preference.
    Cool stuff!

    • @AwareHouseChef
      @AwareHouseChef  3 дня назад +1

      The ode came with the standard burrs that were released two years ago. I have to give it back to my son and the coffee from the Ditting was so much better than my Bunn. I have to find a replacement that is just as good as the Ditting. Enter the rabbit hole.
      Myy roasts are light city to city+ depending on the bean. Like you, I lean more towards finer grinds for lighter roasts. Thank you for sharing!

    • @gibbphenegar2211
      @gibbphenegar2211 2 дня назад

      I’d think about ordering the new burrs directly from Ode. They are relatively inexpensive, straightforward to change, and really do make a difference.
      Any grinder after Q1, 2021 should have the new v1.1 burrs (production date on bottom) or it is etched on the burrs themselves.

      @gibbphenegar2211 what do you think of the next level up? The ones that are gold and around $180?

    • @gibbphenegar2211
      @gibbphenegar2211 2 дня назад

      The SSPs are the most “precise” of the burrs offered. They will definitely pull out more flavors at the cost of a less “smooth/mellow” cup. I love them for single origin Yirgacheffe and Costs Rican coffees but not so much for dark roast Indonesians.
      For $180 a set they are well worth trying and they will demonstrate the hugh difference burr geometry makes.

  • @greysuit17
    @greysuit17 2 дня назад

    The quality of the grinder and the burrs is most definitely a factor for quality coffee. That being said I bought a crappy grinder for $3 at a garage sale. Just for fun I compared it with my EK43s.. It added something interesting to the body of the coffee and I actually preferred it to the EK43s. At least on that particular coffee. If I had to get rid of one grinder though it’d be the garage sale grinder.

      Years ago, I got into high-end audio. Bought these electrostatic speakers, tube preamps, silver speaker wire. Sounded so much better with the a cheap $50 Teac CD player.🤣

    What I've always been really curious about is if low cost grinders (under $60) are worth it for coffee people (pot of coffee started every day) who aren't coffee aficionados (don't have any coffee gear other than a drip machine and possibly an unused French press or moka pot, probably love Folgers or CostCo brand - and that's a fine choice because they love it). I don't know if I could convince my coworkers that the extra work is worth it. When i spent $60 on a Cuisinart ceramic burr grinder that sounded like the Life Flight helicopter at takeoff and made a horrendous amount of fines, my partner thought i was insane for spending "so much" money, and that's peanuts compared to the grinders I've replaced it with (with bemused permission....).

      I'd also really be curious for you to try the xBloom. I love my Clever and my V60 and my moka pot (esp. moka, a little 3 cup E&B Lab glass globe pot, for it's aesthetics), but the xBloom has really become my go to on weekends because I'm busy and no one else drinks coffee and it's good enough.

    Any thoughts about the old-fashioned percolator pots?

    • @AwareHouseChef
      @AwareHouseChef  2 дня назад +1

      For a standard cup of coffee, run-of-the-mill, supermarket brand I think they work well. When you start getting into more creative local roasts, lighter roasts think all the nuances get lost in a percolator
