"Aaaleeex, oh Aaaaaaaaalex!" I preferred Silver Star over Silver Star Story, but that was mainly due to them changing the vibe of the Intro. Other things like killing the diversity if skills/spells available in the game made it kinda boring to actually play. In OG Lunar, sure, most of the spells became useless once you hit a high enough level and you only ended up casting 2 or 3 of each spell/skill for any given character. But to go ahead and just get rid of them all entirely killed any kind of variety of play in the middle portions of the game. They should have tweaked the spells and make them more interesting, not get rid of them. Aside from those two points, Silver Stat Story is a superior game. Unfortunately those two points are kind of important.
My most memorable time was the battle against the giant chicken. I was a well polished machine at that point, and survived long enough to blow through every bit of health, magic, and items I had collected that far. I fought for an hour. And when I died...to that chicken...and the story progressed...I was beyond livid lol. Didn’t play again for 2 weeks. Restarted before the battle with all my stuff back and just suicided myself afterwards and finished the game lol. Still one of the best stories I’ve played.
@@burningknuckle26 The PSP remake pretty much did all of that. Personally I'd just love to see the PS1 version in HD, with a few fixes "like the always walking in place issue". Aside from that I'd like to see Lunar 2 remastered as well, because it's always ignored.

Lunar: Silver Star Story is an insanely good game, complete with well-drawn cutscenes, good voice acting in the PS1 version, good music, even the story is long, well-written, and paced just right. It's one of three games I made my nephews play all the way through, with the other two being Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy IV.
I finished the game for the first time this week and it took me 48h 59m, I beat Ghaleon with my party at level 55 I absolutely love the sense of humor and story of the game, definitely one of the best RPGs ever made... Now I'm playing the sequel

I have so much nostalgia for this game...it was the first RPG I ever fully completed all the way through. And I used to listen to the soundtrack to fall asleep for so long, especially to Luna's Boat Song ❤ thanks for the trip down memory lane.
i see that you’re also a man of culture. this series easily ranked 1 of my top ten jrpgs, preferred the second game personally but no doubt both are masterpieces. my fat psp broke down before i can finish the remake but loved every minute of it and brought so many memories. working designs is surely missed
I loved playing Lunar when I was a teenager. The plot has so many twists and turns. I remember it came with all this other cool stuff like a cloth map and leather bound guide
man i remember when this came out for playstation and the hype around it was HUGE and like the soundtrack and quality that went into the release with full animations and such. the PS version was really big when it hit and topped many of our lists as most wanted game at the time.
I remember first seeing it as an ad in EGM when they started promoting the remake on PS1. It was a two page spread and I was immediately enamored so I started saving up my monies lol because I knew I needed that game that had so much love put into that I knew nothing about haha. I was even drawing fan art before I even got to play it. And I even submitted and was a winner of WD's monthly fanart contest! Those were the days, man. Hearing that music really takes me back.
The game is amazing and i would love to see it come out on steam with minor changes like wide screen and HD. The game is one of my all time favorites and i dont think that will ever not be the case.
I think the most memorable thing for me was how much I struggled when trying this out for the first time. For some reason, it seemed so different to Final Fantasy that I found the game to be so difficult. I'll have to give this a fresh go one day. Great video!
I used to rent this game and FFT for weeks at a time when I was young after I got my PS. I think its one of the better old school rpgs for characters. They were really lively I loved Luna and Jessica
This was the pride of my PS collection and even to this day almost 20 years late I STILL compare all RPG's I play to this one in terms of the best RPG I have ever played. Also, this was the game that first opened me up to come to love and enjoy Anime later on in my life.
This is my favorite game of all time. It gives me the feels definitely. The music, the animation, and the story. Such a masterpiece. I own the PS1 Version and the Sega Cd version. I also have the Ghaleon Puppet and managed to find the Demo on PS1 a few months back. I want to track down the Mpeg card and Mpeg Saturn version now and I think that will be a nice complete collection. Don’t really care to much about getting the PSP version.
i remember heading over to a friends house and he was playing this jrpg and it caught my attention, a few months later i went out and bought a genesis and sega cd on clearance at store going out of business. this became my favorite over all jrpg of any era and lunar 2 just loved it even more with a few characters returning from the first game. good video man.
My love for this game caused me to make one of the worst mistakes of my youth. I had the veritable Tower of Power. G1, SCD1, 32X, Sonic n Knuckles, etc. OG Lunar was such a beloved game to me. I loved it so much, that I traded all my Sega gear, for a Sega Saturn when I heard Lunar was coming to Saturn. Then it gets dropped and Saturn gets canned as a system. 😓
Right there with you brother. Lunar was my childhood. I never knew it as "Silver Story". For me it was called "Silver Star". Came out right behind another Sega CD classic that NOBODY talks about called Vey.
I remember selling my n64 to funcoland and buying this game. The big box, the additional stuff in it was a first for me. I loved listening to the soundtrack CD and unlocking that little mini game. I sang the hell out of the songs. Sadly never beat it cause I got to the end and had no healing items and couldn't go back to buy any and found myself constantly dying
I finished this game for the first time on my PS1 a few days ago, and it was an incredibly charming experience the whole way through. You can feel every ounce of love and passion oozing out of Lunar and I’m extremely excited to play Eternal Blue in the near future. Excellent overview on this absolute classic!
I'm still playing this game on my psp, I look at the oldest save and it was back on 2011 so I've been playing for almost 12 year's lol, I'm still in this cave (cant remember name) but I just finish a boss battle with a shadow sent by Xenobia after kidnapping Mia and Jess and forcing Alex and Kyle to fight, so yeah still playing it lol
Lunar was my very first RPG, hearing the music again just took me back to being a kid, hogging the TV to play on the PS1. I did a cosplay of Alex a couple years back because it still remains one of my top favorite games ever. Thank you for this video!
This game is awesome...I have the PS version in the limited edition versions both game's and guides. And I also have ark the lad. I got the guide for ark the lad...but I think they never released part 3 on the guide...I think it was discontinued
This game is my childhood. I got this game when I was 13 and it was the absolute perfect time. Chasing the dragon master dream, the banger of a soundtrack, and let's be honest...those bromides. It latched onto my teenager imagination and never let go. Looking forward to the remaster.
Ahh man... aright I just got to take this moment to appreciate the many years that RPGs alone have brought to my life. Being an only child and moving around a lot, while I enjoyed playing outside and rollerblading around towns, I always looked forward to coming home and playing an RPG. The Blockbuster days of renting a game, and in Lunar the Silver Star Sega Cd's case... I had to rent it and the console. I loved the game so much that I bought the game even though I didn't own the console. I had sadly lent the game and never seen it again. I acquired the PS1 version, but it wasn't till my adult age that I reclaimed an original Sega CD CIB of Lunar The Silver Star Story. My Top Ten RPGs - 1. Lunar the Silver Star Story 2. FF2 3. Chrono Trigger 4. FF3 5. Xenogears 6. Soulblazer 7. Super Mario RPG 8. Secret of Mana 9. Shining Force 2 10. Final Fantasy Adventure (gameboy). Seeing all the comments... it's a real treasure seeing everyone's love for Lunar the Silver Star Story!
Lunar 1&2 were my first JRPG games I played all the way through & after that I was hooked!! 8 yr old me was having the BEST Summer vacation ever! Now almost 3 decades later I’m replaying Silver Star & it definitely holds up imo The dialogue is great & the story still holds that special place in my heart❤ & I can’t forget the unforgettable soundtrack Luna’s song will always be my favorite out of any JRPG
I have fond memories of this game as a kid. I remember when I was about 11 years old reading about it in Game Informer. It was soon to be released. It was a game I had never heard of. I had played a few other rpgs even at that young age. I remember every month walking into my local Game Crazy store to ask if Lunar Silver Star Story Complete was available for pre-order yet. I remember after walking in once a month to ask it finally was available for pre-order. Then the day I was able to purchase it, wow. I remember the first time hearing the intro song and seeing the video. Such a good game. Always enjoyed it’s happy vibe and great music. So many things I like about this game. To many to mention. I never have had any interest in the sequel since Alex and Luna aren’t in it. Yes I do know some spoilers about the second one. But even so the sequel isn’t my thing. I think the story in the first ends on a good note. Thanks for this video about the game. This game holds a special place in the heart of so many of us I’m sure.
I played the Saturn version of the games, and honestly, I could tell the voice actors were having the time of their lives with those lines. And the animation quality in Eternal Blue was really impressive for pixel art. It really blew me away.
Whenever anyone asks me what my favorite video game of all time is, I say, "you have probably never heard of it, but it's Lunar." And its true. No one knows of this game. Its so perfect, and i wish it got more recognition
This game is perfection. Thank you for a well made tribute! I remember grabbing this at EBGames when it first came out. The music, the color pallet. This was art. We didn’t care about the translation taking liberties. We were just grateful for one more JRPG gem to make it over sees. Anime was just getting mainstream steam too. You had to be there.
Man, I remember playing this on my GBA SP, borrowed it from an uncle. Hearing the OSTs in the video brought me a hecking heavy wave of nostalgia, even though I haven't heard those OSTs for at least 17 years. And it also gave me a bittersweet feeling, making me feel old now, hahah! Played it when I was like, 10 years old.
so true. God I wish there was more Lunar. Whatever happened to Lucia after Hiro showed up on the Blue Star. I want a story about what happened after and between. How did Luna know she needed to make that message for Lucia and how did she do that, did Alex help her. Did they ( and their kids?) go on a quest together to find a way to make a magical message for Lucia? I NEED TO KNOW THESE THINGS!
I would argue the title of "Greatest Overlooked RPG" could be contested by The Legend of Dragoon, but while I never finished it, I did like this game too.
SAME!!! THIS IS THE FIRST RPG SERIES THAT I PLAYED IN PS1 WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, THEN I PLAYED LUNAR SILVER STAR STORY UNTIL NOW I PLAY THIS IN MY ANDROID PHONE VIA EMULATOR. I JUST LOVED THIS GAME.
Lunar is one of the primary games my older siblings and I bonded over when we were kids. It's very important to all of us. Apparently my older brother begged for it for Christmas for so long that our grandfather yelled at our mother to just buy the damn thing lol. I don't remember watching him play it, but I watched one of my sisters play both PS1 games in full. She has both complete in box with all the bonuses to this day...need to borrow them from her lol. Not sure I ever beat either of them in full on my own, certainly didn't 100% either like she and probably our brother did. Lunar is great because of its excellent soundtrack, spatial-positioning based combat, and inspirational anime-style cutscenes. In particular though I think the romantic plot really sets the game apart from other RPGs of the time. Your motivation as a player is less about saving the world and more watching three different couples slowly fall in love with each other. I think that's the most memorable part of the game to me. To think it would be years after Lunar that I would become a proper weeb 😂
This was my first turn based rpg (now 32 and I think I was 10 at the time.). I remember I couldn’t beat that boat boss like an hour in because I didn’t know how to equipped weapons lol so I overleveled with what I started with the game as. I finally beat it and got all the way to that sewer dragon when I finally realized there were weapons 😂😂
Lunar and Star Ocean 2 from PS1 are by far my favorite jrpgs of all time. Lunar for the story, cutscenes and length. SO2 for depth in gameplay and strategy. Before these 2 games came out, my faves were "Saga Frontier", "Lufia 2 - Rise of the Sinistrals", and BOF2 and 3 tied.
Lunar Silver Star Story was my first RPG and the beautiful experience it was to me it make fall in love with the genre and it always will hold a special place in my heart.
I just bought this, after searching for an affordable complete copy. Your video reminded me of a part of childhood that I had forgotten and lost to time. Thank you for this.
Oh man the nostalgia haha one of the greatest games I ever played! The music is so so good! I still remember my little sister was like “Nall is going to be a dragon” and my brother and I are ere like nah but then when Nall transformed into a dragon both me and my bro were shocked and my little sister was like “see I told you!!” Haha y’all know if this is available on steam deck ? Great video!
Silver Star Story and Eternal Blue are both gorgeous underrated games in general, but definitely not for casual JRPG players. Both games are super grindy and can be very unforgiving. One bad save at the wrong time, gotta start over! Both amazing games, I personally loved the difficulty.
The mistake I made with Lunar is playing the PSP version first. Going back to try and play the previous versions just feels like a downgraded experience after that. If people are new to the series I would definitely recommend the Mega CD version first as that way they can see the game evolve.
My favorite RPG. Both versions. The Sega CD and PS1. The Sega CD version had 7 disk variations. I managed to get five of them before prices went insane. The soundtrack is amazing. I used to listen to the soundtrack for this game and the soundtrack for Castlevania Symphony of the Night in my car to and from work for years.
Lunar reminds me of when I had hope and joy. I had the PS1 of Silver Star and Eternal Blue, had to sell them both during hard times in my life but still grateful for even that aspect of them. Great games, hopeful stories, lovingly made games.
Man if they ever made a remake of this series on next gen consoles like the Tales series did from Tales of Fantasia to Tales of Arise. That would be incredible!
"What utter nonsense! Perhaps you should demonstrate the power that gives you such confidence. Then we will see who is fit to be Supreme Ruler, and who... IS DEAD!" Favorite quote of all time, 25 years later, I still got that line memorized.
Goddamn.. the memories came flowing straight in the feels I Loved This Game growing up it was 1 My very first PS1 and PSX lt helped me get through ALOT when I was a kid 🔥🔥🔥🔥👊😌🔥🔥🔥 I was so close to beating 100% it but.. I never could beat Gallion and same with Eternal Blue I’m missed both games the games got lost over my the 2010’s And you did A Truly Awesome and Beautiful job on your Review 👊😌 But I did beat the anniversary version on PSP I still cried after I beaten it back then…it was on my Graduation of 2010 too …That had to be my best year in my Life 👊😌 ⚔️🐉🤍💙❤️🖤
I still remember the soundtrack disc that came with this and the charmingly mortifying song about "Fighting through the evil and the darkness..." The singer really just belts it out! Loved it!
I first played Lunar the Silver Star on Sega CD when I was in elementary school. I love it so much that I when I was a teenager I used by babysitting money to buy a PS1 and Lunar the Silver Star Story complete. To this day, I still tell people this is one of my favorite RPGs.
I've had this game on my mind and heart for ages!! I have both the PlayStation and PSP versions and I love them both, but if I had to pick one it would be the PlayStation version because it's so nostalgic to me (plus the witty localization is a bonus). But since I temporarily packed away my PS2 I have no choice but to play Harmony. I recently found my PSP so I'm still happy to be playing it again at last though~ Jessica will always and forever be my favorite character~
An RPG i would put as actually great but overlooked at the time would be Star Ocean: The Second Story on PS1. that was my favorite JRPG of the system and people virtually ignored it at the time when commpared with games like FF7 but its item creation system, combat system, post game content, sheer amount of time you can sink into the game...everything just blew my mind.
I absolutely love Lunar, the PS1 version is the game that got me into JRPGs. Like you said, it has great characters, an awesome soundtrack and a interesting world, really nothing for me to complain about. I own the fanart edition of Silver Star and have always wished I had a copy of Eternal Blue which I also played and loved.
One of the best rpgs of all time. Games are not made with this kind of care and thought anymore. It’s 2023 and it’s still one of the best rpgs of all time. I have such fond memories of playing Lunar and Lunar 2 over and over as a child. One of the biggest things for me was the world building. I loved how every npc has something to say that contributes to the lore or world building. Now in 2023 npcs all have some generic line, it’s sad. The character design and character development were also top tier for both games. Ghaleon and Zophar were both great antagonist as well.
I worked at EB games and one of these sat on the shelf entire time I worked there, was still there when they closed down. One of the games I wish I would have got to play. Now it's like what 200+
I sang Luna's boat song at a high school talent show, I was in choir so there was a lot of pressure despite the song being unknown (this was but a few months after complete released on the Playstation) The damn playback system the school supplied completely died, RIGHT as I took stage and had to do that bish with no accompanying instrumentals. This game was NEVER overlooked by me I can at least say that, please continue the love for this game! It was stupid hard sometimes, and I LOVED it. (Honestly I was young and probably didn't grind in it as much as I did in FF2 aka FF4) It went well, though my family never showed up to see it T_T Being in gate choir helped the positive reception despite lack of accompanying instrumentals, but family still couldn't be bothered, I was in 9th grade lol. I LOVED this game, and even model an OC NPC Important character after Nall to this day, with some additions of course to make it my own.
Glad to see others are huge fans of these games like I am. Both games were amazing and rank very high for me personally. Wish Lunar: Dragon Song was just as good, but I finished that one pretty disappointed.
If anyone knows the whereabouts of Victor (or any other that was affiliated with Working Designs or Studio Alex), please touch base with me. I've written an entire script for a potential sequel called, "The Silver Legacy." Yes, we all know Game Arts owns all the licensing for 'Lunar' (or do they?) Any help would be very much appreciated! 👍
I've had on and off curiosity about this game ever since I played an RPG Maker game named Legendary Adventure that was supposedly a sort of parody of it.

I was even drawing fan art before I even got to play it. And I even submitted and was a winner of WD's monthly fanart contest! Those were the days, man. Hearing that music really takes me back.
This is the game that jumpstarted my love for JRPG. Everything is great especially the music.
The game is amazing and i would love to see it come out on steam with minor changes like wide screen and HD. The game is one of my all time favorites and i dont think that will ever not be the case.
The nostalgia from the music alone!
I STILL LOVE THIS GAME AND ALSO THE ETERNAL BLUE COMPLETE! GREAT GAME
I agree, it's awesome!
I think the most memorable thing for me was how much I struggled when trying this out for the first time. For some reason, it seemed so different to Final Fantasy that I found the game to be so difficult. I'll have to give this a fresh go one day. Great video!
Man, I still remember every word to that track! Great breakdown! I need to replay this one!
I just got bombed by nostalgia so hard I can't move.
I used to rent this game and FFT for weeks at a time when I was young after I got my PS. I think its one of the better old school rpgs for characters. They were really lively I loved Luna and Jessica
One of the best JRPGs ever made!
I played this on Sega CD. Had no idea this was underrated. Back then this was my 2nd fab rpg behind Ys 1 &2.
Great to hear that!
Ys is another underrated series.
that game box content was so good. and would be the 200$ ultra mega deluxe version today
Yup, we had the Voltron of video game systems too. Later on we got a Saturn but sadly only a few decent games for it. Like Guardian Heroes.
Didn't it come out on the Saturn?
Love this game! Such good child memories
My older brother got this when it came out on PlayStation. I was blown away by the polish of the graphics! Nostalgic.
One of the best rpgs I’ve ever played. Loved it from the beginning to the end.
Right there with you brother. Lunar was my childhood. I never knew it as "Silver Story". For me it was called "Silver Star". Came out right behind another Sega CD classic that NOBODY talks about called Vey.
Just beat this game for the first time yesterday. Easily one of my favorite games of all time. This is in 2022! Pretty wild
For me, the Battle Theme is the best soundtrack in this game.
All of them, especially the one that plays when you fight ghaleon
My fav game of All Time. it had everything. It pulled you in and the the music and story and characters were perfect. a true classic
Looking forward to the remaster.
bars of soap, Bromides and that staircase. That is what I remember of this game.
Absolutely loved this game and its sequel. The box that it came in with all the stuff was so cool.
One of my most favorite memories as a kid was playing this game. It was cool watching your review of the game and reminiscing!
Ahh man... aright I just got to take this moment to appreciate the many years that RPGs alone have brought to my life.
Right on, thanks for sharing your memories of it!
Lunar 1&2 were my first JRPG games I played all the way through & after that I was hooked!! 8 yr old me was having the BEST Summer vacation ever!
Now almost 3 decades later I’m replaying Silver Star & it definitely holds up imo
The dialogue is great & the story still holds that special place in my heart❤
& I can’t forget the unforgettable soundtrack
Luna’s song will always be my favorite out of any JRPG
I love this game!! I finished it twice i think :D
And i also ripped the XA-Audio from the playstation disc and found the hidden track :P
I appreciate these memories!
I played the Saturn version of the games, and honestly, I could tell the voice actors were having the time of their lives with those lines. And the animation quality in Eternal Blue was really impressive for pixel art. It really blew me away.
Only saw this one out the corner of my eye back in the day. Will put it on the list. The sprite work and pixel art generally is exceptional
The official strategy guide was just as well written and entertaining as the game, I had a blast reading it while playing.
Agreed, it was great!
Whenever this game comes up I have to hear the opinion. I'm glad you covered it well. Also I'm jealous you got that punch puppet.
OMG I loved Lunar 2!!! Do that one next!
I saw an AMV based on Jethro Tull's Cold Wind To Valhalla 15 years ago. As a result this game has a nostalgia for me.
Whenever anyone asks me what my favorite video game of all time is, I say, "you have probably never heard of it, but it's Lunar." And its true. No one knows of this game. Its so perfect, and i wish it got more recognition
Right on, I can see why!
You should definitely do one of these on Xenogears! That is my favorite game along with FF6
Glad you enjoyed it!
This was the game that got me into JRPGs
I just bought this, after searching for an affordable complete copy. Your video reminded me of a part of childhood that I had forgotten and lost to time. Thank you for this.
Glad I could help! Hope you enjoy it.
Yes, so much nostalgia! Glad you liked the video.
Silver Star Story and Eternal Blue are both gorgeous underrated games in general, but definitely not for casual JRPG players. Both games are super grindy and can be very unforgiving. One bad save at the wrong time, gotta start over! Both amazing games, I personally loved the difficulty.
Thanks for sharing your memories of them!
My absolute favorite game of all time. Eternal Blue Complete is my second. Eternal Blue has a beautiful prologue as well. Great review!
Thank you!
The mistake I made with Lunar is playing the PSP version first. Going back to try and play the previous versions just feels like a downgraded experience after that. If people are new to the series I would definitely recommend the Mega CD version first as that way they can see the game evolve.
Thanks for this feedback, I never played the PSP version.
A game that I absolutely love. I sadly don't have the cloth map, as I bought my copy used, but have the rest.
Both were such great games indeed!
The music of this game was perfect, Mecha Chicken Nash's boss theme is still in my top ten boss themes.
IS DEAD!"
Favorite quote of all time, 25 years later, I still got that line memorized.
Great memory!
Goddamn.. the memories came flowing straight in the feels
I Loved This Game growing up it was 1 My very first PS1 and PSX lt helped me get through ALOT when I was a kid
🔥🔥🔥🔥👊😌🔥🔥🔥
I was so close to beating 100%
it but.. I never could beat Gallion and same with Eternal Blue
I’m missed both games the games got lost over my the 2010’s
And you did A Truly Awesome and Beautiful job on your Review 👊😌
But I did beat the anniversary version on PSP I still cried after I beaten it back then…it was on my Graduation of 2010 too
…That had to be my best year in my Life
👊😌 ⚔️🐉🤍💙❤️🖤
I still remember the soundtrack disc that came with this and the charmingly mortifying song about "Fighting through the evil and the darkness..." The singer really just belts it out! Loved it!
Yeah, the extras Working Designers included, like the soundtrack, just made the full experience so special.
God such a nostalgic game. I just want to curl up and play it
I first played Lunar the Silver Star on Sega CD when I was in elementary school.
I recently found my PSP so I'm still happy to be playing it again at last though~
Jessica will always and forever be my favorite character~
Thanks for your thoughts on it!
I still remember the music from both games.
Two great games that were definitely better than their competitors.
It's a shame they got out-businessed by lesser games.
Rudy from Wild Arms and Alex are my favorite protagonist. Inner strength fed by the love and companionship of his friends.
