1:22 Hello! “Talented Amateur Localiser” here! I was one of the translators for this patch, and am just glad that people outside Japan can finally enjoy this great game!
Translation groups blow my mind with how much hard work they put in for barely any fanfare. I wonder, are there any western text heavy games that get fan translations to Japan or elsewhere?
Yup. Sakura Taisen was another big one, but the sequel would take the cake. I have heard there is interest in doing it but the quantity of text is very large.
Good question. You think maybe some random Japanese guys translated Fallout, Fallout 2, Wasteland or original Elder Scrolls games from English to Japanese?
@@sarcasticguy4311 I would love to know if this is the case. The more I think about it though the chances of foreign gamers knowing at least basic English is much higher than Americans knowing Japanese.
@Derric Steal-yo-gurl Agreed. Consequences of losing wars, I suppose, they all end up learning English, but it's basic conversational English. I've studied Japanese culture for years and still don't get many of their idiosyncrasies and I'll bet that works both ways. This is probably part of the reason it takes so many years for fan translations to get completed. Programming is just one of the hurdles. Half of the world uses a kana-like alphabet and half uses the Roman-esque style in text for gaming and programming which is quite remarkable that a tiny few can extract and translate just so we can play a game never released in certain regions.
Dragon Force II? Whaaaaaaat? I remember watching my brother play Dragon Force back in the day and thinking it was so cool, but it was years before I even discovered what the name of it was. Now I'm learning about Dragon Force II? I think I need to rekindle my interest in this series. Thanks for the upload!
Dragon Force is such a unique game, I haven't played anything else quite like it. It's almost like a weird proto-RTS in the sense that you're moving multiple units around the map and trying to control territory, but it's also interesting to reveal different parts of the story by playing the same scenario from different factions perspectives. I kind of wonder why more games didn't explore this type of gameplay and expand on its mechanics more.
The 32 bit era was such a golden age for RPGSs! Thanks a lot for sharing that link. I must play that soon! I’m just about done with my SNES Enix trilogy play through. Just gotta play terranigma. So after that it’s on to DF2. I love DF1. So thanks for this info because I kept hearing mixed reviews on 2.
@@eppskevin It was only because it didn't change much outside of having a few new troop types and two troop types per general. But when dragon force is so good to begin with, why change it anymore than that?
I must confess Xygor, I've been consuming your content for weeks now and i didn't subscribe until this video. I guess i was on the fence, but this is some quality content!
Oh, do I remember when I first heard about Dragon Force II! I was scrolling through RUclips one day, and there was this video asking if it was the best RPG ever, and that the video would play in 30 minutes. Ah, memories...
This is just great. I’m a long time avid gamer and somehow DF2 escaped my knowledge! I can’t wait to DL the patches version on my Satiator and play it! Your channel is really nice.
Never knew part 2 existed before. Dragon Force 1 was dope and I sadly never beat it before selling my collection. Miss my sega stuff. Good video, thanks for the review.
Thanks for this. My history with the genre and this game series is identical to yours. While I have the patch and game in the physical, I haven't played it yet due to life. But I am so glad that many of these classics are being translated these days for us to relive the glory days and more.
I remember knowing this game was a Japanese exclusive and my older brother renting it for our Saturn along with X-Men vs. Street Fighter at some point, as the local store we'd get games from would get a lot of imports. Not being able to understand Japanese, it was difficult to play. I'd have my brother just take me into a battle and try to figure it out, but eventually would just go back and play the first game for the nth time. I didn't realize there was a translation for this, so naturally I'm gonna have to try this out in the near future.
@@marcbasil Do you have any idea what those cost? Neither have been in production for nearly 30 years and I'd need a working and modded Saturn. Maybe I should just go buy a bag of diamonds, too?
With these older, more unknown titles that you highlight I'd love to hear more about overall playability in the modern era of gaming, how the quality of life stacks up and whether it's worth seeking out with comparisons to some more modern RPGs/Strategy/Tactics games etc. Love the video -- thanks for the unique curation as always Xygor!
Dragon Force is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. I played it and beat it with every kingdom numerous times but I never played the second installment. I’m strongly considering patching it and playing the second one since I always wanted to play it. Great video!
Plowing my way through Dragon Force right now during downtime in the oil field and there's a LOT of downtime lol, played through Dreamcast's Experimental Gimmick Gear last month, already grabbed Dragon Force 2 from CDRomance as I go there every few days to grab translated games from the 3rd to the 6th gen of gaming consoles. REALLY enjoying Dragon Force. =D
Sometimes 'more of the same' is exactly what we want from a sequel I wish more game series did that for a few games before messing everything up trying the reinvent the wheel!
i belive to have even more awareness of how great you doing this video is. You should have put that it was fan translated and unreleased in the US in the title(rather then your regular title). i love that you helped me find these games and DF2 is awesome even though i played it for the first time in 2021. Ogre battle will always be the best though
I wonder if Dragon Force I and II will be re-released/remastered/remade for modern gaming platforms, complete with English or Japanese text or voice options for both games? Steam owners would absolutely go nuts for those games.
Oh man, i had completely forgotten about the English translation! I've only recently been getting into Saturn imports and wouldn't mind adding Dragon Force II. I really need to replay Dragon Force as well, it's been yeeeeeeears. Shame Riglord Saga/Mysteria/Blazing Heroes's sequel hasn't gotten a translation. While not the best game, it did scratch that Shining Force-style itch.
Amazing game that really needs to see a re-release. A favorite of my brother and I. He has a tattoo of the crest and I am supposed to be getting mine also, just need to make more money lol Great review, really wish this would get a proper release, I'd even accept a mobile port if they don't do what they did with final fantasy 6 lol
Also, I don’t understand why no clone of this game ever came out. This game style is 100% unique and there is nothing like it. I would love to see an independent developer take the concept of it and expand a bit without compromising what made the Original so good.
The games have strong similarities, but outside of combat things play out more akin to Ogre Battle with the armies being moved about the world map. Arguably somewhat similar to Brigandine as well especially with the warring kingdoms aspect. Its a pretty unique feeling game and I can't think of anything else quite like it.
Dragon Force was amazing to play!! It was a treat going through every story. As for strategy, I would just spam dragon crests lol. Against samurai, just have more dragons or weaken with another general first, then dragon-em. I watched at least one story of the second game years ago, but I had no idea this game existed back in the day. Your video inspires me to watch a couple play throughs! The story arc's are a great feature to the game.
i really thank you for reminded me about this game, 100% forget about this type of game combat , now day all the Strategy like combat is all about the same, been searching a new type of strategy combat, and never did i dream to look in the past lol.
This game seems to be better than Brigindine, a game it reminds me of by way of moving around the map, but that's not the point, no, the point is that this game is a great find if you're a fan of Ogre Battle for the PS1, or the aforementioned Brigindine, which it most closely seems.
Loved the first game more than most other Saturn games and never knew there was a patch for the second. This is a blessing for us westerners. Thank god they didn’t translate the audio.
Unfortunately, the original Dragon Force was overlooked by most and that was a mistake. The second game never got an official release here so I don't fault anyone for not playing it. I haven't for example...but I haven't forgotten about it.
I really enjoy your channel. Your intro music sounds so familiar to me. I know I have heard it before but I can't remember where? Please tell me what it's from. I recognize your outro music from Final Fantasy 6/3
Never been a better time to play it either. The patch (1.04) is probably as far as it'll ever get and doesn't seem to have any bugs (or one's that pop up often anyway) and Saturn Emulation has come a long way.
"Unfortunately, the translation patch does not translate the audio." ...Honestly I call that a win. Not only is fan VA usually superbad, but so many fan translation patches have been permanently delayed or never released at all simply because they got too ambitious and wanted to VA the whole thing.
As a huge fan of the original Dragon Force, I honestly don't care much for its sequel. While it does streamline certain aspects of the original and add some good features to the combat, ultimately I take issue with how the game all but entirely removes the platoon movements of the original as well as how the difficulty lies mostly in the truly tedious caverns. Where the original game would throw you into an overworld full of action that you had to make sense of, the sequel is barren and even railroads you into moving along a predetermined path. This makes the game much less variable, and not just between different playthroughs, either. Taking over the map minus the caverns is ludicrously easy as a result, which really kills the feeling of accomplishment of uniting the continent compared to the original. Then you have the caverns, which are easily the single worst aspect of the game. They are truly a chore to complete even when you have high level officers due to the enemies locking your skills. You just sit, wait for all their troops to die, then run the clock until draw and send out a ranged unit to chip away at the enemy officer. I can't think of an experience more antithetical to what made the original so great than this. I think the development team focused too much on the slightly annoying aspects of the original and not enough on actually improving upon what it did well. The sequel feels incomplete to me as a result and I now see why Working Designs didn't bother localizing it back in the day. On a side note, if you want another Dragon Force esque game, 100 Swords for the Dreamcast is worth trying.
i wonder if the kingdom under fire series was inspired by these games because it definetly reminds me of a 32 bit-era version of those games. im definetly looking forward to playing these!
I've played through Dragon Force II several times many years ago, well before the translation patch ever existed. I don't speak much of any Japanese, but I've played through most of the big Japanese-only Saturn RPG releases usually without too much trouble. Dragon Force II is one of the easier ones, the only real difficulty was having to memorize the different Japanese characters that represented different troop types. Because this game will punish you if you send the wrong troop types into a battle. As for the game, I really enjoyed it, and it did improve upon a few things compared to the first one with more special attacks, more troop types, and the ability to have 2 types for each general. However, the thing that still makes me prefer part 1 is that I prefer its sprite art style a bit more, and part 2 had an annoying repretative amount of battles in those caves with almost indistinguishable goblin armies.
