  • Heading into Houston with a 2-0 lead, the Lakers wanted to end the series quickly to give their veterans rest before the next series. As always Magic looked to get others involved to start the game off but no one seemed to have it offensively, so he became the go to guy. The end result was a 38-point outburst on 70% shooting that also included 16 pts in the 3rd Q.

Super efficient at everything and 6'9" Power Point Guard God ... Was Erving and Bird tall and conscientious on defense... He could score 22 ppg at 52% shooting 🌠 and hit 85% of his free throws and assist 12-14 baskets 🧺 a game... He could hit clutch threes, had a post game he could pass and score off of..and he had a hook shot like Kareem... I mean, damn. He could do all this without jumping... He played like a white guy who could run and he didn't have to over extend himself and he was tall enough to take 10 steps and get anywhere on the court..
Isiah Thomas and Curry are no. 2 or 3 to him. Oscar Robertson is no. 2 or 3 or 4 depending on ur working detailed knowledge of 60s NBA. Frazier is up there. Kidd, Paul, Nash, Stockton, Payton eventualmente... But all those guys couldn't get 22 ppg as effortlessly as Magic while making assist from a standing position as if it really wunt no thang... Those guys had to work harder on defense, or Oscar played in a time when nobody shot that well as the game was more prehistoric and gauging itself rapidly and built thru Center first.
I say Isiah Thomas is no. 2 cuz he beat Bird and Magic as team captain and Bird and Magic resurrected the league after Wilt and Bill left the game as Natural Wonders.
Isiah didn't shoot 85% from free throw like Curry and Magic, he hit threes about as consistently as Iverson and he didn't stay a 22-12 guy as long as Magic did .. and he was not the defender Frazier or Payton was and didn't shoot 50% off 8-13 shots a game like Stockton... But he challenged every team leader, took every big shot down the stretch and slayed GIANTS without teams like Curry had with Durant that extended Warriors dynasty by at least a couple schips... They probably don't even get the 4th one if not joined by Durant for 2 and 3... Isiah was a 22-12 guy could league in assists like Stockton in 87, before he tailored his game with Dumars and Microwave so seamlessly... And then even with the HELP, it was Isiah Thomas challenging Magic, Bird, Wilkins, Jordan in the second halves and scoring 33,37,42,44 if necessary to win it all. He could be 18 and 8 and shoot 44% and get two steals and have the Celtics and Lakers down 2-3 in 87 and 88 while sweeping 🧹 them senseless in 89 and 90...
But Isiah had to work hard to crack the crown 👑 of the GOATs 🐐... Where Magic ✨ was just the best and born to dominate basketball 🏀 at half speed and still be too fast and if he played until 1996 like a Tom Brady he'd have 7,8,9 rings ..
Then it'd be Jordan who? Oh that Jerry West Elgin Baylor Dr. J like feller

Shame that Magic had to carry LA in '91. It was no longer the Showtime Lakers, it was Magic's Lakers. Magic in the 90's would have stayed a force until retirement by 94,95 or 96 or maybe longer. Would have no doubt stole a title or two from Chicago and Houston... Shame for LA fans. He transitioned into replacing Kareem as their post up in paint scorer. All while averaging 12 assists per game and 7 rebounds. He transitioned into a new role while not losing what made him so effective during ShowTime 80's era. Fact he took the Lakers to the finals in 91 speaks volumes of Magic & his ability to ACTUALLY MAKE PLAYERS & TEAMS AROUND HIM BETTER

The golden age of the NBA imo.
    Real stars. No divas.
Strategy beyond Isolation and/or pick n roll jack up a 3.
Low post offense instead of this stretch 4/5 garbage.
Actual court awareness/basketball I.Q./fundamental skillset instead of today's athletic "potential" guys whose skillset consists of jumping high and/or jacking up 3's.
Man to man defense with hand-checking instead of this lazy zone nonsense.
Tough, gritty rivalries instead of this bro-hugging/pal-ing around after games/playoff series.
I understand younger people won't get any of this since all they know is today's NBA product and think it's fine. But for anyone my age or older, today's NBA is not even half the quality product it was back during the golden age from the mid 80's to late 90's.

@@eddieG667 you are probably right about the hiv, but remember he had to do everything for that team in the finals, since the key players were injured and battle worn from that grueling wcf with Portland. The Trailblazers had a very dangerous team that was #1 in the league that year and would probably beat any other team including Jordan's bulls. Portland swept the bulls in the regular season that year. The Lakers only beat them because of Magic. In that series he was very aggressive(even got a couple of memorable dunks on them)but most importantly used his brain more than ever like a coach on the floor just to beat them. If he didn't play like that Portland would've beat them. So all of that took so much out of him so that by the time he got to the finals he was very tired himself and like you said probably had hiv at that point. But it was his performance from 1988-89, 1989-90, and 1990-1991 entire season and playoffs/finals that solidified his status as an all time great because even though he didn't win anymore championships he played at an Mvp level straight all the way through and was never the reason why they lost any of the times. He was the only reason why they made it as far as they did in each of those last 3 seasons and gained the respect of everyone in the league even Jordan. Magic recognized Jordan at that point as being the Goat at that point before everyone else did because his basketball iq was so high. Funny thing is while he was admiring Jordan, Michael Jordan was looking at Magic as the Best player in the league at that point and knew that for himself to ever be the best he had to not only beat Magic Johnson, but learn a few more things from him( court vision, team leadership at the highest level, certain ways to execute assists, etc) and combine it with his skill set, then he knew he'd be totally unstoppable. That says a lot about Magic and legacy as one of the goats

That don't even LOOK like the Lakers. Showtime was over, No Pat Riley No Showtime. Had they been Showtime and Pat Riley had still been there, the finals would have had a different outcome. The way the Lakers played in 91 was to place Magic as the head man, Give him the ball and get out of the way and that was the WRONG way to go about it. Showtime and making his team mates better players led to 5 titles and they should have stuck to what they knew. You got a PROVEN winning formula, why change it? The new Lakers coach wanted to make a name for himself and he did, a embarrassment.

I know this video is about the greatness of Magic Johnson but I've got to first comment on something I saw written here...VERNON MAXWELL TOOK MORE SHOTS IN THIS SERIES THAN OLAJUWON!! That is stunning, but it probably shouldn't be when you consider the type of unpredictable person and player that V.Maxwell was!! Vernon Maxwell probably believed that he was better than Olajuwon and the best player in the NBA in 1991!! LOL
About the Magic Johnson GOAT comments on here, I think Jordan edges him out(due to being 6-0 in the Finals with 6 Finals MVP's) but I take no offense to anyone who considers Magic the GOAT, I only get offended when THE CLOWN WHO HAS BEEN HOPPING TEAMS AND JOINING WITH ALL STARS SINCE 2010 is considered a GOAT. It's a huge insult to guys like Jordan, Magic, Bird, Kareem, Olajuwon, Barkley, Ewing, Karl Malone, Wilt, Kobe, Tim Duncan and others who were elite players who didn't take SHORTCUTS IN THEIR PRIME for easy rings!
This 1991 season was a true indicator of Magic's greatness because Pat Riley was gone, Kareem was gone, the remaining players from the Showtime teams were around 30, they added a bunch of new players, yet Magic led them to 58 wins(the 3rd or 4th best record in the NBA) and the Lakers made it through a VERY tough Western Conference to advance to the NBA Finals. You can make the case that the 1991 Western Conference playoff teams were way better than the West playoff teams the Lakers faced in 1980's. The Lakers had cake walks to the Finals most years in the 1980's.

I know you don't believe the Lakers had cake walks to the finals during their run!!! Apparently you weren't around....Every series was a fight...every team was good, hard nose playing teams.. the Lakers were just a superior team led by the Goat!!

    • @seeehorn
      @seeehorn 2 года назад

@@randybutler1697 All true(except I'd put Jordan and Kareem above Magic!), I say cakewalk relative to what the Eastern Conference champion had to face in the 1980's(Boston, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Detroit), even though the Twin Tower-Rockets tripped up the Showtime Lakers in 1986, they pretty much went untested in the Western Conference Playoffs until the late 80's. I'm not necessarily downplaying Magic and the Lakers because they were truly elite and were going to dominate most teams!
Also, you have to realize that its MOSTLY DIEHARDS who are old enough or SMART enough to understand real basketball commenting on videos like this, not youngsters who were raised on HOT TAKE CLOWNS(Stephen A, Skip, Nick Wright, Shannon Sharpe) and think LeBron, Giannis and Steph are the GOATS!! LOL
After the FRAUD FROM AKRON won another shortcut title in 2020, a youtuber made a list of the Most Difficult NBA Championships Ever Won, he went back to 1984, so 37 teams. Of course, most of LeBron's were among the easiest, but so were the Showtime Lakers, in fact 1987 and 1988 Lakers ranked as the easiest. Let me say again, this isn't meant to disparage Magic in any way because LeBron isn't close to Magic or a lot of the true GOATS, and I have no issue with anyone who considers Magic the GOAT!! This was the time Houston was coming together as a team. Vernon and Hakeem haven't had their dust up yet and it was believed that Don Channey was losing the team even though he won coach of the year in 1991. A year later he was fired and Rudy T took over and the rest is history.

    • @seeehorn

@@olanrewajuogunse7177 I just looked up the Rockets stats from the 90-91 season and they actually had 3 other guys(outside of Olajuwon) averaging 17PPG in Maxwell, Otis Thorpe and Kenny Smith. I was stunned by that too(lol), it always seemed as if Olajuwon scored all their points, in a similar fashion to Michael Jordan at that time.
The problem was Vernon Maxwell shot 40%(.404) from the field during the year, the other 2 shot over 50% from the field, which explains how Maxwell could take more shots(56-45) than Olajuwon in this series against the Lakers. Maxwell was a guy who needed 25 shots to get 20 points and that's not gonna work if you want to win championships, but the Rockets were able to win the title with a somewhat reigned in Maxwell 3 years later.

@@seeehorn that's the reason why stats could be misleading. You saw a highlight that Mainly feature Magic Johnson offensive output. Vernon Maxwell and Otis Thorpe wre the other two that scored in doue figures but neither one of these guys could create their own shot. They couldn't take anyone off the dribble either. They benefited from Hakeem being double teamed where he would kick it out to the open man. Otis was one hell of an offensive rebounder. But they were too inconsistent so the Rocket buildt from the draft bring in Hory and Sam Caseel and the rest is history. So it might have seen like Vernom took more shot than Hakeem every night but that's not true at all.
