These tapes are all we have, but they're old. Wish you could have watched him on TV back then. He was every where! Played every second he was in the game. He is the Goat.
Jordan Bird Kobe. Larry bird is legendary. Top 5. A savage. The clutch gene. Imagine a man telling you what he is about to do to you and you can't stop him. Great video. Bird did it all.
I was about to head to bed but now I gotta watch this because I love reactions to this segment!! You should check out 5 times Bird was hurt but refused to quit. That's my favorite reaction video to watch
If I am starting a team in the NBA, and have access to all the players in their prime, my top 3 picks would be: 1. Wilt - 7'1" 265lbs, ran a sub 11 second 100m dash, benched 500lbs, squat 750lbs, and had a 44 inch vertical leap...at 7'1"!!! The NBA changed its rules to slow him down. 2. MJ - no explanation needed. 3. Bird - he's the perfect compliment to the top 2. Having a guy that can shoot like him when the defense collapses on the top 2 is perfect. Plus, his passing ability would feed the top 2 looks that they wouldn't get with most players. As for LeBron. Yes, he's a great player. But he wouldn't put up the numbers he has or played as long as he has if he played in the 70s, 80s, or 90s! It was a much rougher game in those eras. But if you take the above 3 players and drop them into today's NBA, they would all put up numbers above LeBron's!
Yes, I watched Larry on TV when the Celtics came to play Chicago or during the finals. ( Only a few channels in those days.). I am so old I used to watch Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell, too. No wonder I love basketball. There are many great players, through all the eras. What always stood out about Larry Bird was that he was always doing surprising, amazing things, be they shots or passes or steals or whatever. So, it was always fun to watch him play. You would just laugh, like those Hawks on the bench, because you couldn’t believe your eyes. So, among the other greats, he was the most fun to watch. And that’s why he, and Magic, too, brought fans back to the game. They were exciting to watch. They were skilled and determined. They practiced and worked. They made you feel happy. They kept you coming back for more. …..By the way, I love your reactions. I am happy to hear you talk as long as you pause the video. And I wish you the best in whatever you are going through right now. You are smart, perceptive, clear in stating your points of view, willing to listen to others’ opinions, and you seem to have a sympathetic and caring heart.
People always react to when he would break peoples ankles so "slowly" He used the smallest amount of energy needed to get the effect, he did it with his brain not with just a rapid movement.
My favourite 2 players still to this day is Karl Malone ,no 4 in all time scoring , and John Stockton , still all time leader in assists and steals , Not necessarily Goats but Players that don't get talked enough
My top 5 are Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan (largely due to their accolades and ability, but also for how they collectively and simultaneously resurrected the league) and my last two may be contentious but are players who forever revolutionized the game. Wilt Chamberlain is the preeminent big man of the game and holds records which will never be eclipsed. And lastly, all of modern basketball owes itself to the Pistol, Pete Maravich. His technique and devotion were unparalleled. His mentality helped transform the league to become a showtime sport, mesmerizing fans and even converting casual observers of the sport into fans. Lebron James and Bill Russell are my honorable mentions to this list.
Bird is the real GOAT and MAGIC and BIRD absolutely saved the the NBA ! Before they came you were lucky to find a live game on tv ! We got one game every weekend , unless bowling was on , and holidays ! At that time I was Always Hoping it was the 76rs that were Scheduled and watching Dr J ……
Personal top 5: 1.) Jordan 2.) Bird 3.) Magic 4.) Olajuwon 5.) Abdul-Jabbar. I'm 45 and have watched all of these players, 80s through now. My favorite active basketball player is Luka Doncic.
Highly regarded Coach Pat Riley said "If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I'd choose Michael Jordan," Pat said. "If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life, I'd take Larry Bird."
They were prioritizing not just MOVIES, but BLACK AND WHITE TV NETWORK RERUNS (All in the Family, Good Times, The Brady Bunch, etc.) OVER the NBA Finals, which were played at later times, so they obviously weren’t LIVE… Imagine watching the Game 7 of the finals the day after they played the game! And, if I recall right, they announced who won the night before on the news, which ruined everything!
Vex, you are correct my friend. You never know what someone is going through in their life, and we should never pass judgment because that person might look fine from the outside but on the inside, they might be fighting a real battle. I enjoyed your reaction and the Larry Bird journey that you are on. He might not have been the flashiest player, but the man was born to play the game. Thank you for an honest and sincere reaction. Loved it.
Thanks for reacting to this, I enjoy your commentary. To me 80’s and 90’s championships are worth more because players were allowed to play defense. A lot of these guys today playing no-contact basketball wouldn’t be as special back then.
Hey, if you're still looking for videos to watch, may I recommend the 1992 Dream Team documentary. It's free to watch on RUclips, but it is over an hour, so you might have to break it up in parts. However, it's got Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, and a whole host of other NBA legends on it. It's very interesting and pretty fun to watch as well.
Bird's the greatest all-around player to ever pick up a basketball, and the most amazing thing is that he was never fully healthy for any of his NBA career! Keep learning about Bird and the other greats of the past young fella 🤙
Jordan was *0 in 6* against Larry in the Playoffs. Michael even got 60+ points in one of those games! Larry was the ONLY professional player Jordan never got "revenge" against.
I Absolutely agree !!! Yes 👍 BIRD and MAGIC are not just the greatest passers of all time , they both have the highest winning percentage in NBA history They also saved the NBA !
The guy on Indiana that Bird chirps at and stares at after he blocks his shot is Chuck "The Rifleman" Person. Chuck was a talker he had a rivalry of sorts with Bird, though as Bird has said, "I always seem to get the last word."
I appreciate your heartfelt reaction. However, I think you missed many of the comments made because you didn't pause the video. Many of us were thinking, "I don't think he heard the point he was making".😎 Keep up the good work, I would just suggest you pause the tape more rather than talking over it.👍
Please research Bird's history and you will find out he had a very hard youth and went through alot to become the player he became. Look at the "greatest passer ever" video and remember Bird played as a forward and not a PG so he was off ball most of the time. I think he is the best all around player ever. Bird went to a 29 win team as a rookie and with 1 roster change = ML Carr and a new coach was the biggest reason Boston won 61 games = a 32 game turnaround = the biggest turnaround in NBA history. Bird won ROY over Magic and also finished 4th in MVP that year. For the next 8 years ( before his surgeries) this is how he finished in the MVP race = 2,2,2,1,1,1,3,and 2 again. Bird created the 50-40-90 club abd did it 2 seasons in a row. He also just missed the 50-40-90 in 85 and 86 and if you total his stats he actually shot 50-40-90 over those 4 consecutive seasons = no other "goat" candidate can make that claim. Bird led the league in defensive win shares 4 times and was 7 times in the top 5 in DWS. He finished tied for 3rd place for the DPOY award in 1983. As a rookie he had a standing vertical of 28 inches = same as Karl Malone and the NBA average.
LMBO I am just 4:22 in an you are right, you never know what someone is going through or struggling with..... Bird had a HARD life and his dad killed himself when he was in high school..... don't know why I started that with lmbo but ya must've made me laugh just then, I"m also kinda high :) Anywho please do more Bird reactions............................................. Also sorry to anyone who may read.. I love Bird and I love pot and I am high :)
Magic and Larry, met up in the finals in College. Because Indiana State really only had one guy to go to. Michigan double-teamed and triple-teamed Larry all night. Just think how good Larry was to take his team all the way to the finals, practically by himself.
Check out both the trash talking and passing videos - he was amazing. I've seen him a few times vs my Knicks - he often made that a painful experience. lol And here's a good quote to live by: Aspire to Inspire before you Expire. . . sounds like one that would hit home with you.
There are full games available on RUclips. Tournament games from Bird's senior college year. Some from Bird's early NBA career. Playoff games. I can give you links if you'd like.
Larry bird is the Goat. He was a leader of men. He gave everything he had to win the game. Jordan is my number 2. Bill Russell is 3. Olajuwon is 4. And Magic 5.
People are already recommending the Courtship of Rivals documentary to watch, and I second that. It’s a bit long to maybe react to, but it’s worth watching in your private time… the relationship those two had is something we should all aspire to in our lives. I would also recommend checking out the other vids in Clayton’s Making the Case series… he goes this deep on all eight players he mentions as being the potential GOAT of the NBA, and it’s very good perspective on the different eras of the league too.
Larry Bird proved his greatness during his rookie season by the simple fact that he injured his shooting hand during the off season between his senior year of college and his rookie season in the NBA when he was playing baseball. The injury resulted in his shooting touch never being as it was originally yet he went on to shoot over 90% for his career so imagine if that injury never happened. He helped the Celtics win a championship in his second season in the league. During the off season in 1985 Bird was putting in a new driveway at his mother's house and he injured his back and he played the rest of his career in pain from his back and it affected him daily. Lebron fans talk about what he has accomplished and I would never argue against him being a great player, but if Larry Bird was playing today with all the medical advancements he would easily have had a 20 year career too and he would likely own every scoring record there is. As great as I think Michael Jordan was Larry Bird is the one player Jordan never beat in the playoffs going 0 - 6 against him when he beat every other top player during his career.
Larry Bird would have psychologically destroyed lebron if they had ever met in the playoffs Starting lineup: PG: Magic Johnson SG: Michael Jordan SF: Larry Bird PF: Tim Duncan C: Kareem Abdul Jabaar
You see that Magic gave Larry compliments at Larrys retirement announcement. Well, they didn't do that at the end of a game as is common, instead they schedule on a night of no basketball at the coliseum and it sold out in minutes and you just couldn't get anyone to give up their tickets. Great player that had the respect of almost every other player on any team. He was Mr. Basketball a smart and gifted player who worked at the game. His prep for each game was the same and it was never overlooked.
I like tier better than rank. In tier 1 I have Larry Magic and Jordan. Also you really are at a disadvantage if you didn't see entire playoff games and series. Only then can you fully appreciate these guys. Highlights are nice but you can't really understand why this guy called Larry the most clutch.... Unless you saw those playoff and games. Also, listen to other greats. What do they say? Larry played chess while everyone else played checkers. He was two steps ahead, always. Like he was in a time tunnel two seconds ahead. As the guy said, he has his claim. He may or may not be, but he's close - close enough to be able to have a claim.
Top three in this order Russell because of his rings 11. Bird because of his craftiness. At MJ because of his athleticism. James worthy “Michael Jordan made you look slow Larry bird made you look stupid. Clayton is right bird was a part of the foundation rebuild of the NBA along with Magic Johnson call Reem, the Lakers, Isaiah Thomas Michael Jordan. They were all part of the rebuilding process of the NBA and it seems to of worked.
I got Jordan, Bird, Kobe, Kareem....it gets a little blurry after, have to really think about, LeBron probably wouldn't make my top 10 honestly... maybe....but this ages rules n competition and everything....not even off numbers, my dude grew up with was 1 off best ever seen, nvr made NBA, would of schooled many NBA players...but nah lebron ain't making my top 10 most likely....n idgaf about the overrated stats...
If LeBron, with all his physical gifts, played with Bird's intensity, every minute of every game...he would, without question, be the GOAT... but that is not the case.
Jordan, Kobe, Bird my top 3. I can't give it to anyone in this Era cuz they jump to play on super teams and defense has disappeared. 3 and No d league now
1. Larry Bird (A great superstar and with Magic, saved the league. 2. Bill Russell (11 rings and total badass) 3. Tied Magic Johnson & Jordan. (Couldn't decide between then and it isn't just about hardware and accolades. Not to me.) 4. Wilt Chamberlain 5. Kareem Abdul-Jabar
Mj, bird, kobe. In that order. The greatest athlete to play basketball, the smartest man ever to play basketball, and the greatest raw shooter of all time
I’m late to the party and don’t know if you’ll see this. Did you know Kareem was in a movie? It’s one of the funniest movies ever called Airplane. His role isn’t huge but it’s not small either. He plays the copilot. I totally recommend you watch it, it’s more fun with a friend because this movie is joke after joke after joke.
Rings absolutely belong on goat convos because it’s the whole point of the game. I don’t play the game for pretty numbers. At the end of the day u play to impact the team first and foremost. It’s not an overriding factor because u definitely need to have the individual accolades and talent too. But it’s definitely a large factor when ur comparing the best of the best.
Magic and Larry are not just great players but both are great people."Courtship of Rivals" a great documentary, it goes beyond the BB.
I recommend that documentary all the time and am waiting very patiently for reactors to watch it

Bird,Bird,Bird,Bird , Larry Bird.
Bird, Kareem, Magic.
1.Jordan
2.Bird
3.Honestly undecided
3 and No d league now
Larry Bird!
1. Larry Bird (A great superstar and with Magic, saved the league.
2. Bill Russell (11 rings and total badass)
3. Tied Magic Johnson & Jordan. (Couldn't decide between then and it isn't just about hardware and accolades. Not to me.)
4. Wilt Chamberlain
5. Kareem Abdul-Jabar
That shot he missed in the finals he had a broken bone in his hand from a bar fight. I watched that game and remember it well
If it's a shot to win the game, give it to Jordan. A shot to save your life, give it to Bird.
Bird , Jordan, Magic
Larry bird and magic Johnson for the simple fact that they saved professional basketball.
Rings in the GOAT discussion is simple Bill Russell, 11 rings, 8 straight
Mj, bird, kobe. In that order. The greatest athlete to play basketball, the smartest man ever to play basketball, and the greatest raw shooter of all time
My top 3 are Bird, Magic and Jordan!
No flopping. Only effort and heart
It's obvious you're a student of the game.
Top 3 in no order: Larry Bird, Tim Duncan, Michael Jordan (well, ok, they're alphabetical).
Bird, bird, and bird
#1 Bill Russell, #2 Larry Bird, 3#Wilt Chamberlain, #4 Michael Jordan, #5 Magic Johnson
Top 5? Artis Gilmore, Larry Bird, Daniel Issial, MJ, Magic. Coach "Slick"
To learn, is to not TALK, while someone is teaching you. You missed atleast 7 points of interest, while the commentator was talking.
