I love the idea of Mr X being a socially awkward weeaboo with no sense of personal boundaries who just wants to show you his anime collection.

It's not whether they were similar it's that he claimed something without actually doing it which is bad for someone who is considered a journalist. Just because his opinion rang true doesn't mean what he did was right.

Going to IGN for video game reviews is like trusting a Nigerian prince with your credit card number. IGN takes money from publishers, which means they have a conflict of interest. "7/10" is a meme because that's the lowest score IGN will give a high-profile game from a company that it takes money from, even if it deserves worse.
I never played the original, so no nostalgia glasses here, still thought it was a great game.
Its probably better without the nostalgia goggles, as that can set expectations too high.
I’m still on the fence between this or RE4 as my favorite but the only contender on my radar for the rest of the year is DMC5 for goty
Really? Apart from solid gameplay I couldn't find anything good about it - especially not the story and dialogs.
I played a little of RE2 at my friend's growing up and I have a copy of RE3 Nemesis that I'm about halfway through. The only reason I'd want a RE3 remake is to see how they implement Nemesis and his AI. Although the over the shoulder kinda makes me want to play RE2 remake because tank controls are ass. Especially in RE3 because you have to mainly turn your character to run in a direction while Nemesis can run full tilt in any given direction.
Re4 was when the series started to die, overrated trash
"lick my gritty pritt stick, viewer" has to be one of yahtzee's best, non-sweary comebacks in the history of ZP. Very visceral with a hint of double entendre.

Honestly, the story bits are undeniably kinda dumb, but explainable. Claire doesn’t have a cell phone, Chris had kinda fallen off the face of the earth, Umbrella is a pharmaceutical company that developed the T-Virus, they’re not a conventional weapons manufacturer, and Mr. X is a *late 90s* ultra weaboo which is a much more intense and dangerous creature than the ones of today. He bored the licker to death with talk about how Aeon Flux is actually an American animation (common misconception) and how Ninja Scroll is a cinematic masterpiece.
(Edit: The fact that over a year later so many people don’t seem to understand that the whole joke was about the Mr. X weaboo thing and NOT the plot holes in the game saddens me a little.)

Ninja Scroll was ALMOST Hentai. Back in the days of "Let's give this woman a large-belt like skirt and constantly ALMOST show something, but don't." Reminds me of Cinemasins somewhat in so much as "All bad guys are rapists, ding" XD

No Claire is not law enforcement, her gun train came from her brother and she's only a college student at this point. As for the phone issue, this in 1998, phones were way less common and generally less reliable, google only became a thing the same year for context on the limits of the internet. So even if Chris had a phone to call there would be very little chance of being reached given his location and the nature of his disappearance. Calling the police station or others is also a no go do to difficulty of finding such info or that such paths would lead to the same cover Chris gave. So given all that Claire's best chance of finding Chris is to Raccoon city and try and talk to any of the star members directly since its one of the only chances for Claire to get actual information were her brother is even if some would say its under cover work.

Also just worth pointing out that the game takes places in the 90's (1998 off the top of my head, I think) and therefore well before Facebook or even brick-esque cell phones were available.
@@firedog647 that's true. without facebook or cell phones, keeping in touch with someone - especially someone like Chris who was NOT at home due to important reasons - would have been MISERABLE without eventually actually going to the city where they live and hunting them down at their home and place of work. that's a REAL problem in 1998, though it seems totally trivial now.

"Alright" is a better rating of it than expected, glad you didn't rip your eyes out over it.
From what I've seen he normally doesn't like remakes/remasters since it's rehashing old crap. But regardless of personal feelings about the subject matter, one can't deny that the gameplay is extremely solid, the aesthetics are great, and it really sticks to the primary theme of survival-horror with it's resource management. Those three factors are things that Yahtzee tends to appreciate. Were this a completely new RE game I'd imagine he'd say it was excellent due to not being weighed down by the fact that it's a remake.
...then again I'm just some random asshole on the internet trying to pin down a critic's specific tastes. So what do I know? :3

Yeah, its not stellar, as some people state it to be. 10/10 is way way too much.

Zombie HP is inconsistent. Dont care how this adds to the 'horror", its artificial difficulty. There is fun to play , and there is stupid. This is stupid. On top of that, their spawns are fixed(like in the classic)... i mean , its 2018, youd think theyd add some level of randomness at least.....

Voice acting is meh.
Graphic problems and bugs , with lights and car textures etc..
Short length...(i mean, 3-4 hours at best). On top of that, the 2nd run and other campaings are not drastically different for the majority of the game(save for weapons and 20 minute segments)....

@@bakazura2442 Debatable. I hate the classic re games. They were way more clunky than anything id appreciate. They were slow, and tedious. Controls were awful. For what its worth, i did appreciate them being done with the superior play system, but in the case of remake 2, i did not appreciate the chunkiness and tediousness "true to the original".
@@cactusmann5542 Well, everyone has their tastes. It has it's problems, but I still thought it was a really good game, it did a lot of things right, added an improved version of RE4's combat system, and built a pretty good atmosphere. And, if anything, randomness would be artificial difficulty, even moreso than the inconsistent health (which I didn't even notice, tbh). I'd give it an 8.5/10. The problems keep it from getting a 10 for sure, but 7 being generous? I wouldn't say so, and I'm pretty sure I'm in the majority.
3:22 How did he kill a zombie with only one headshot? Everyone knows Resident Evil zombies need somewhere between eight and eighty headshots to die.
If you're lucky you can kill zombies is one shot. Did it once in the first sequence of re2 remake

I know this is insanely late. But RE2 Remake implements a Critical Hit system.
When the crosshairs close in(when you're standing still and aiming), there's a chance(rare) that the bullet will cause the zombies head to explode. One shotting them.
I've had it happen a couple of times.
@@SakuraAvalon late here too as I've only just got around to actually playing the game. There's something extremely satisfying about thinking "oh bugger, a zombie, time to shoot him in the head about 50 times" and instead he just drops like a sack of bricks, brains coating the nearest wall.

Sadly, you may be right. From what I've seen of the games slated to come out this year, they're all looking pretty 'meh' at best. So for Yatzhee, 'Alright' might just be enough to make it on the Top 5 list, if only because 'meh' and 'crap' don't reach that high.
That's more a commentary on the games industry than this game's quality, sadly.

Actually yes, she did try to phone the police station. She tried for weeks to contact Chris (also its all said in the game, not just written in some documents). And remember. this game plays 1998. Facebook and smartphones werent a thing back then in the RE Universe. But zombies and super weapons.

They talk about in files that the reason Umbrella is fast and loose with safety and seemingly basic common sense is that they are uber loaded with cash and they can basically buy their way out of any situation also the zombies and bioweapons are a gigantic source of income for them.

@IndustrialBonecraft terrorist organizations would pay good money for a weapon that could destroy entire cities but aren t regulated like nukes. And a super soldier is always wellcome in any army.
I actually don't think Umbrella ever finished their bioweapons enough to sell them. They came really close with the Mr. X Tyrants, and controllable Hunters like Wesker used in CV. But then they accidentally a whole US city, and that was kind of a big mess up for any company to recover from. Thing is even the Tyrants would still lose to the average armies tanks. Now Nemesis could have been useful since he was a Tyrant that could use conventional weapons but I don't think they could mass produce him yet.
Honestly I had a great time with re2. I never played it the first time around so it was a great chance to fill out my library. The dialogue was surprisingly expressive and the campy writing kept me amused. I always procrastinated with unease after I ran out of ammo and would have to run through the next area with my stockpile of health items. Plus the free additional content dropped today that could complete the whole experience and cure cancer but you'd never know.
I think it's slightly unfair to complain about the lack of interesting enemies in RE2 while praising RE7 to the heavens. RE7 had literally 3 enemy types, not including the bosses.
Well, he was talking about the bosses, not so much about the normal enemies. Besides, when he talks about all the interesting bosses RE has, he says they all went to RE4, not RE7. I think the praise of RE7 comes from trying to do something different than it was done before in RE and the characters being more interesting and better "acted" than the ones in RE2.
@@TotalJebus Resident Evil 4 has perhaps some of the best monsters in the franchise and I do agree that most ideas went into that game. Resident evil 7 had Molded, Margarite, Mia and Jack as your enemies. In Resident Evil 2 Remake you had zombies, Lickers, Mr. X, William Berkin, Alligator, zombie dogs, plant 43 and even Annette Berkin acts like an enemy in Leon's scenario.
(And the final stretch of the game is kinda boring (and ends with a lame final boss))

RE2 had zombie, dog, licker, plant zombie, G2. RE7 had molded, bladed molded, crawling molded(which is like the licker), fat molded, giant bug(pretty much the dog) and Swarm... plus the I belive 5 maybe 6 new enemies not including bosses put in the DLC... but man I wish the Baker families dog made it in the game.

Same in some ways but also different in quite a few, at its heart RE2 was an exploration game, few enemies, generous ammo, lots of jumpscares. The Remake removes a lot of the more tedious puzzles, increases enemy numbers and resilience, does away with a lot of the jumpscares, and makes ammo far more scarce. Basically it's the difference between Resident Evil and the Remake on GameCube, and I'm glad they didn't add the Crimson Heads, screw those things!

All of the "problems" with Mr X apply just as much to Jack and Marguerite Baker from Resident Evil 7
How so? The Baker family had different personalities and operated differently(not even bringing up their backstory) Mr.X is just a giant mute that stomps towards the player. You can kite X around the table in the Library,Jack Baker would just smash the table, make fun of you for such a stupid idea then he kills you.
Even then the Bakers were just minor bumps in the road compared to X which honestly started to piss me off when I started speed running it.
Man the voice acting, jokes and personality in this episode where great, hope to see more of that later on.

Vid guy needed to take it further, to a point of absurdity, to read as a joke. Like "why didn't she just poke him on facebook, or skype him, or get on TikTok on her iphone 9?" but then he'd need to say "oh, right. 1998. but still." It's tough explaining why a joke doesn't "read" but in this case it really didn't, imo.

I agree with the dialogue portion, but as someone who grew up starting on re 4, I found 2 remake better than 7. Frankly 7 was too action focused and every complaint Yahtzee has with Mr. X is worse with Jack...
Jack, on the normal difficulty, shows up to patrol two hallways and their associated rooms and that's it. He pursues you only if he sees you, can be outran, and doesn't home in on the sound of you sprinting you for a second.
@@ZxiferKatsura Mr X isn't too good at hearing sprinting actually, it's theorised that he actually moves at the same pace towards you sprinting as he does if he's lost track of you, stopping to listen in the same way and losing track if you stop sprinting (but being closer than before so you may wander into him by accident). Some people have timed it and it can take upwards of a minute for him to track you down if you are sprinting non-stop in one room. It's only if you start shooting that he books it for you.
@@vc180191 It's actually 10 minutes for him to find you if you stand completely still,4-5 minutes if you run and 40 seconds if you shoot. This was just one youtubers test mind you.

I think Capcom has givin up on Online. They can't do it right. Even with their fighting games
I would love a version of Outbreak on a console that can actually do online. Because the original was a good idea done about 5 to 10 years waaaay too soon. I'm actually surprised it HASN'T been remade, or got a spiritual sequel.
If you want to play re outbreak you can do it thanks to fans, and pcsx2 upscaling really makes the game look good
Outbreak was a series of games that I loved that I never got to experience online, one because no one had ps2 network adapters and 2 it was shut down by the time I got to play them, I wonder if theres a way to get it working with emulators or something
@@Qwackin604 There is a was of playing it online on your PC, just loot up RE Outbreak Online, but do try to find people to play if first, as I'm not sure if you can find open public lobby's.
I much prefered this to number 7. I enjoyed 7 but never felt the need to play through it again but I've played through RE2 4 times already and I'll be going back for more.

I’m on playthrough #7 with all the infinite ammo guns finally unlocked. Finally gonna do an assisted no box or heal run and then rocket only run.
I would recommend running Madhouse difficulty for 7 at least once, it really switches up a lot of the game progression and is a fun challenge. All of the DLCs are pretty worthwhile too, ranging from fun repeatable (and sometimes silly, in the case of Jack's 55th Birthday) side games to competent campaigns with unique mechanics to the base game.
I think the first person Perspective on RE7 put me off wanting to play it again, I felt it was too slow and boring, the 3rd person just made me feel like it was an RE game

Playing this game was like watching a perfect swan dive - they *nailed* it. I loved the original back in the day, but the remake is objectively better by every margin, and is the most sheer, pants-pissing fun I've had with a videogame in years.
Well... not EVERY margin. I do miss how the original could be played 2 entirely different ways, depending on which character's disc you played through first, creating two similar but distinct stories. Which characters fight which bosses, how certain characters die, what happens with Ada and Sherry etc. But then again, the series has a more concrete canon now than it did back when there were only 2 games. That'd be about it as far as complaints go.

I really wouldn’t mind a retro review of the original RE trilogy from Yahtzee and get a proper idea about why he’s so against them compared to RE4
He found them to be cheesy stories that played it straight with a gameplay system which he felt did not or could not have a proper balance between horror and action. Compared to RE4 which winked at its audience and did horror better despite being action-oriented
Watch the other RE reviews. He always drops hints as to what he thinks of them. Especially in the RE5 review.

While I don’t dislike the original three RE games as much as Yahtzee, I can see where he’s coming from. While they were good games for their time and they do survival horror reasonably well, they are horribly dated. The graphics are hideous, the tank controls are irritating, the combat is awkward to the point of being more annoying then scary, and as Yahtzee has pointed out, the overarching story makes no goddamn sense.
On top of that, the Silent Hill Games did survival horror so much better, and by comparison the original three RE games don’t hold up very well. RE4 switched from survival horror to action horror, and did it extremely well.
I'd suggest taking Yahtzee's opinion on the RE games with a pinch of salt. He's more of the psychological Silent Hill 2 horror type of guy, which Resident Evil is absolutely not. Which explains why the only RE games he enjoyed were RE4 and RE7 for their cheesy tongue-in-cheek self awareness. Not for the horror.

@@sayeshi1 Pretty much this. It was early in 2019, so an "alright" early on can turn into a top 5 spot just because the year produced nothing but bland and boring tosh that isn't even worth talking about.
You use typewriters to save your game. It's a clear indication that phones in this universe's timeline exist only as landlines and are probably closed circuit. Maybe that's what Umbrella was originally experimenting on; improve carrier pigeons to deliver messages lightning fast and modify their vocal chords to deliver the message verbatim.
Fascinating...I had to google the square cube law and I never even thought about what that meant for creatures in games or zombies.
Honestly, I think creating matter from nothing (how they got bigger in the first place) is more of a problem than how they lived when they were that big.

Basically every sci fi monster from the beginning of the genre flagrantly violates those laws of biology. The Xenomorphs from Aliens are still the biggest offenders, but any zombie not propelled by magic would be unable to move an hour after creation and would be a pile of angry smelly jello within a week. Just sit back and enjoy watching the uptight biology majors cry in a corner.

Been a big fan for 10 or so years, and FINALLY picked up one of your books on Audible. "Will Save The Galaxy for Food" was an absolute smashing fun read! Please keep the books coming!!!
One things that I think is worth mentioning, is the rank system. It actually adds quite a lot to the game. it's not just a challenge for braggers or for a few shiny weapons. You'll find it actually changes the game quite a lot. To get the S+ rank in hardcore, you have a very limited time and can only save 3 times. So now you resources are even more limited, because you don't have the time to run to item boxes, or revisit the rooms where you left the items to begin with. Now you have even more enemies that you'll leave behind, because again resources and time. Add in Mr. X and now you don't really have a choice but to keep moving, maybe once or twice using a known safe room to lose him if you really need it. All this makes these play throughs considerably more tense, and scary. You're running down hallways, with zombies screaming and reaching for you from all directions, you've got Mr. X hot on butt and you're one mistake away from ending it all. I found it to add a lot to the game, and make it feel like a new experience, even after playing all 4 story scenarios.
I know you don't have time to consider this in reviews, you've got other shit to do. However if you ever are just playing to have fun, give it shot I think you'll enjoy it.
Limiting your saves is just a bullshit way of artificially increasing difficulty, that basically tells people who actually have responsibilities that they don't get to participate because they just don't have the uninterrupted time available.
Umm are you even aware of how fast you can clear the A scenario? If you're slowly exploring it can take 8 hours, if you're going for pure speed it can take under 2.
3 saves in a 2 hour span of gameplay is no that much of a time crunch.
Also what do you know about the people who have actually done this? What makes you think they don't have responsibilities?
Actually doing it that fast requires practice to get it down to that time though too. I'm sure there are some people who can do it while still managing other things in their life as well. But a lot of people, like myself, simply don't have the time to sit down and do that. Even finding 45 minutes of uninterrupted play time is very difficult for me.
I actually remember doing the S-rank runs on the original RE2. But I was in high school then. I had TONS of free time. As an adult, I'm nearly always having to deal with a kid, or a pet, or some sort of household maintenance.
That's understandable. I work full time and take care of a household, so I hear ya.
It's not as hard as it was back in the PSX era. I actually managed it on my first try in Hardcore mode, but this was after going through the game with both characters A and B scenarios. So it still isn't quite as bad as it would have been if they made the game as hard as the original.
I just think it does add a lot of challenge and changes how intense the game is, that electrifying feeling that he was talking about. However there will always be those things in games, that are really there for people that can dedicate a ton of time, or just happen to get the hang of the game quickly.

1. Yes, Claire did try to call her brother. If you happen across the in-game document "Chris' Diary", he's gone to Europe on a secret mission, and decided not to tell her because he didn't want her in danger. So she headed to the last place she knew he was. Idiot ball: Chris.
2. Yeah, this wasn't an official Umbrella Corporation op. Birkin, the researcher who developed the G-virus, was showing signs of mental disturbance, so Umbrella tried to phase him out. Problem was, the guy was paranoid, so he contacted the military and offered a bioweapon package deal of G and T. Umbrella got wind of it and sent their security forces to retrieve the virus from Birkin, only to find that he'd contaminated most of the high-security facilities they had in the area, meaning they were now spread really thin. They shot him and got the samples, but he used the thing on himself -- good old Mad Science 101 -- and then killed them all, breaking open a lot of the vials in the process, which is how this whole mess got started. Idiot ball: Passed back and forth between Umbrella and Birkin.
3. They're not trying to make bioweapons. They're _trying_ to create an immortality serum. Problem is, they keep winding up with zombie plagues, this being the second virus to go south on them in such a fashion. That said, they're willing to sell the failures to anyone, and they keep the smarter monsters around on security. Idiot ball: Umbrella.
4. They really wish the square-cube law would sit up and take notice of these things. It would be so much easier to defeat them, then.

Yahtzee's preference for 7 yet again reveals his love of walking simulators. While REmake 2 requires some real strategy and on the fly decision making with disposing of enemies and which routes you will take, I felt 7 was constantly shoving me down a narrow corridor of set pieces with the constant objective: "shoot it in the head until it dies". I also don't know where he gets the idea that 7's story is any more compelling or nuanced than the campy fun that it and 2 really are.
An "alright" from Yahtzee is the best compliment any game could get.😂

Claire does try to phone the station. It’s at the beginning of Claire’s cutscene. Not to mention that it was the 90s and they didn’t have mobile phones at all. So going to the police station seems reasonable at this time period. Also umbrella are making biological weapons which can be even worse than bombs. Also those Serums that make people big and strong can be used to make soldiers in uses of war.

Leon and Claire in this game are charming but only because they’re complete idiots that both refuse to take things seriously and become intensely melodramatic for people they’ve just barely met.
I played Leon's campaign in the old RE2. I actually enjoyed the story (seeing it more as a fun adventure), but there are one or two pieces of voice acting that stick out to me - like how they weirdly kept emphasizing the word 'boyfriend,' or Leon's 'AI-DA!' when Ada falls to her (not) death.

While I will always respect your shilling defense force for RE7, I’m not really seeing how this is much of a step down from that game. It’s simply a different direction which makes sense since it’s reimagining an earlier entry in the series. I actually do prefer the characters in 7 though. They felt more believable in their situations while still retaining that crucial campiness and tongue in cheek charm. I don’t think it’s really going to affect the direction of 8 at all, especially since they’re different teams afaik. Pretty sure 7’s crew is already working on the next mainline entry.

I didn't like the characters at all in RE7, the writer just recycled materials from older titles he wrote for. And of course Silent Hill 2...
Since RE5 I've hoped Capcom would reboot the Resident Evil franchise and that's pretty much what RE2 Reimagining has done.
Yeah gameplay wise RE 2 is way better, story wise RE 7 is much better. I thought he would have liked that that the remake Leon is more like his RE 4 counterpart quips and all.
