I have heard half a dozen or more versions of this song, including Peggy Seeger's original version, Roberta Flack's chart-topping remake, renditions by Johnny Cash; Peter; Paul & Mary; and Marianne Faithfull; and The Flaming Lips' earlier interpretation with Erykah Badu. This is by far the best version I have ever heard. Period.
Like this version (most make me want to throw to up) - but heard Peggy singing it this evening and even at the age of 81she puts something into it that no else has managed
I love Badu's take on this track and the original 9min length, but Palmer is able to transform the song into something else entirely. Her vocals are even sharper. Anyways, it's just a better delivery.
The Erykah Badu version was actually the official track on the Heady Fwends album but there was issues between the artists concerning the music video. So the Flaming Lips collaborated with Amanda on a second music video.
