- This talk integrates the speaker’s life experiences as an out transgendered woman with her reflections on her profession as an urban planning and professor. The speaker first explores why the Tyranny of Gender is the source of so much misunderstanding and unfortunate results. She uses a set of auto-ethnographic reflections to illustrate why safe spaces are an essential component of urban areas.
Dr. Petra L. Doan is Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at Florida State University. She has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on international planning as well as planning for marginalized communities, with a special focus on lesbian, gay bisexual, and transgendered individuals. Her two papers in Gender Place and Culture explore transgendered perceptions of cities and public spaces and are considered path-breaking articles in the field. In 2011 her edited book, Queerying Planning: Challenging Heteronormative Assumptions and Reframing Planning Practice, was published by Ashgate. In Fall 2012 she served as the John Bousfield Distinguished Planning Visitor at the University of Toronto. In Spring 2015 Routledge will publish her next edited volume, Planning and LGBTQ Communities: The Need for Inclusive Queer Spaces.

I’m not quite sure why this video isn’t titled “why we should aim to bring segregation back.” I thought most of us agreed that just because some people benefit in some ways from segregation, that as s whole it’s bad for society.
History had shown us that people from small minority groups will be viewed as “different,” and “odd” by the larger majority groups. Probably because they’re “different” by definition.
I just don’t see why segregation caused by the small group is much better then segregation by the majority.
Women have the right to go to the bloody bathroom without men in there. Maybe if you define what trans is to use the ladies bathroom I will listen, but this I "identify" crap is not enough. You are merrily undoing 150 years of hard won rights for women. That's not OK.

When there is hate, discrimination and intolerance toward trans women, there is also hate, discrimination and intolerance toward women. That's a fact.
Failed as a man, thought he could do better as a woman... fail on both counts.
I'm not even going to finish the video, all I can say is that we are fucked, "done" these people are popping up more and more and we are giving them a stage to play their pretend. Resources are being wasted on this. We have failed the future generations.

Fall off scholarship, he speaks in the right tone and words. However, his self loathing is so large that he has seperated himself from reality and created his own reality. He want to be accepted but his curse is, he doesn't accept himself. End of the line for him, hope he finds his validation. However, he has to respect himself and others. Hope doing it this way makes him accept himself...
