  • Vania Ceccato has spent more than 20 years researching the relation between urban planning and safety. In this talk she outlines the basics behind her ideas, and suggests some concrete solutions that can be put to use to make our future cities safer not only for women, but for all of us. Vania Ceccato's research is on urban and community safety. Ceccato is coordinator of the network SafePlaces (SÄKRAPLATSER) that aims at improving the knowledge on situational conditions of crime and crime prevention in Sweden, see www.sakraplatser.abe.kth.se/
    She is interested in the geography of crime and perceived safety, transit crime, rural crime and community safety, safety as a public health issue, safety and gender, quantitative methods and spatial data analysis.
    She has conducted research on spatial patterns of crime in Scandinavia, Brazil, UK and the Baltic countries particularly on the relation between crime and socio-economic neighborhood dynamics and land use characteristics. Her current research projects deal with safety as a commodity and a public good, places of outdoor rape, crime and fear of crime in Stockholm’s underground stations and safety in Swedish rural areas. She has published in international journals, mostly in Geography and Criminology. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.     I’ve always noticed the women’s washroom in the malls are further than the men’s washroom. That means men have to enter the restrooms first. That also means that they disappear first so women know that nobody is following them.

    Please explain how the design of buildings impacts women’s safety and that they’re not included.

    Thats also so women can have a good old nosey look down into the mens restrooms as they please everytime they walk past.
