- This silent Cine Film was kindly given to me by Phil Harris a friend of Gary who had filmed this unique coverage of South Wales Railways in the early1960s during the Steam /Diesel transition period .
The quality of this NEARLY 60 YEAR OLD film varies greatly but the content for South Wales steam lovers is priceless showing familiar places as well as hens teeth locations.
such as Abercynon and Merthyr sheds in colour , Maroon Westerns at Aberbeeg with ex works brand new out of the box 37s alongside 9Fs on Iron Ore to Ebbw vale.
Watch 2-8-2 tank 5200 slipping backwards .
Ebbw junction shed in steam with double headed 37s passing.
Pontypool Station with Steam and diesel, maroon Warship and green 47s.
!st generation DMUs on the Rhymney valley.
Routes featured Merthyr to Brecon and I think 3 Cocks Jct.
Bargoedd Dowlais ,and Pontypool to Neath.
there can't be much more like this around waiting to be published so never mind the quality ,feel the content.
I hope the added music track enhances the viewing and adds some empathy to the period.
I loved the footplate shots showing the human side as well as the technical. Thanks for posting
Wow I can't believe I found this on here!
Gary was my dad's best friend, went to school together. I knew Gary as uncle Gary, and he encouraged my enthusiasm for all things trains when I was a nipper. He gave me books magazines and memorabilia, and I remember his railway in his back garden... Great memories from a lovely bloke... Rip uncle Gary and aunty Pam and Raynor x
Watching footage like this of the days of steam reminds me I was born in the wrong era..... I’m only 33.
Thank you for sharing 👍
What a Masterpiece, and nice Views of wonderful Free Street Station to Brecon, what a sad loss losing the Lines from both Neath and Newport.
An amazing never seen before footage across South Wales Brian. I recognised most of the locations..and enjoyed every moment of this..Well done to Gary for having the foresight to capture this incredible material...Regards....Bob
Never to be repeated Bob...a real gem regards Brian
Robert Masterman that’s about the year that steam traction ended before the Diesel locomotives took over
So much that was once so great has now been forever lost, and certainly not in the name of progress.... truly heart breaking to think that the UK had such a comprehensive railway system and we lost it to the bureaucrats cooking the books about their inefficiency...... this line alone was supposedly so inefficient and so unnecessary and so unwanted that a dual carriageway has now been built over it...... and at huge cost to the public…… Truly a heart breaking video seeing what was built to last for hundreds of years now all gone forever well before its time.
Wonderful footage. The cab ride from Hengoed to Pontypool Road was particularly nice to see. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it
Brings back memories.never mind the quality, feel the width !
Great video from a time when the country was was worth living in

Superb,thanks for uploading
That must have taken when steam traction ended before the diesel locomotives took over
My late dad would have loved this film he was a fireman at Merthyr the loco in the film 9676 was his regular loco he loved the railways all his life
Glad you enjoyed it and the connection with your late father makes it more special, this material is very rare, tried to clean it up the best I could.
Nice memories someone bothered to capture in time.

@@BrianTuckerRailvideos look forward to that.
awesome. Didn't that Deltic at 15.00 look fantastic. Anyone see what the nameplate was, my eyes are gone these days lol.
I grew up in the Wirral and we had steam trains pulling coal wagons to the power station in Bromborough..great to see this part of Sth Wales
Wow! That's how it was, shame it all had to change. We are all getting older, happy memories, thanks!
Thanks for your comments
Wonderful. Brings back memories of Saturday afternoons spent in and around Pontypool Road in the 50s. A plethora of GW classes from Castles, Halls, Manors and Granges down to humble shunters. Also, LMS rebuilt Scots, Jubilees and the occasional unrebuilt Patriot on passenger trains from Manchester. The LMS locos had their fuel replenished at Pontypool sheds before heading later express trains back to Manchester
Thank you so much. So many memories of an era that was taken from us. Progress .... Mmmmm. ?
This so calming to watch and its nice to see the old steamers of the uk
new sub
Really enjoyed this compilation. My grandparents lived by the main line near Splott bridge and I spent many happy hours sitting on their garden wall watching the trains go by in the sixties. The sheer variety of steam locomotives was amazing. From what I recall the EE Type 3 (class 37) and the Westerns were present in 1963 but the Brush Type 4 (class 47) didn't arrive until 1965.
Thanks John 👍
