This is the first time I've ever watched an SC video, where I went, "Oh my God, this is finally looking how I always imagined multi-crew gameplay to play!" This aspect of the game is starting to look very encouraging!
Imagine the other implications of this gameloop in the PU. The big ship ( Hercules series ATM) is disable, after the battle, you can either call for help to tow it back to a space station and have it repaired, try to repair it yourself if you have salvage guns or leave it for a scrapper to find, witch can also try and salvage it or scrap it. We only need radars to work on derelict ships from players to find them and the ability to sell ships!
I understand at this point the elevator needs to operate even when systems are down for the sake of basic testing, but I do hope that eventually things might change with hacking gameplay. I envision a future where every threshold of a ship becomes a pretty significant obstacle for the attacking force. No more just shooting entire hangar doors open or spamming to call the elevator back and forth. Even with very limited power, a ship's crew should be able to lockdown things like doors, hatches and elevators with the engineering panel, and reactivate them when desired. The counter to this home field advantage would be hacking or some sort of hard breach like charges or cutter tools. I imagine hacking should be more time consuming, risky and reversible, but have the potential to give attackers much greater control over the enemy vessel. Whereas hard breaching options would be quick, loud, difficult to reverse/repair, but would be localized to one threshold at a time.
there will be plenty of solo gameplay, there just won't be ridiculous matchups like solo small ships vs medium/large ships but there will be options to do things like take your small ship and hunt other small ships.
It will get worse when capital ships get into the game. Capital Ships and Carriers are made to be ferries. And small fighters are really meant for far quantum travel. No doubt in 4 years SC will at least be out of alpha stage I believe.
finally. this will change the game, this is amazing and has great potential to get even better from here, i hope they don't change this because of some crying concierces who don't understand why thisi s they way to go. i also have one big ship, if i wont be able to fly it without friends or npcs then so it is... good, i t want it like that.
This is how the game should feel in the future. We should not feel like your big ship will just blow up easy. Only specialized capital and big ship killers should be able to threat big ships.
Engineering is my goal for this game. I wanna be the used parts salesman with free installation cruzin in my crucible.... I'm sad I couldn't get in to help test and give feed back.
And now imagine everything catches on fire when damaged and you also have to firefight and use the room system while defending the ship. I also really want them to add stuff like broken Pipes that release steam and have to be welded shut or dangeling electrical wires that might shock you if not repaired. Those could also be used intenionally to create cover and blockades. Total chaos.
it could even be related to how the ship looks and its manufacturer. A drake ship already has alot of exposed pipes, while an Origin might not, so Drake might be harder to keep in shape during a fight! thatd be cool imo
@@randyculwell7651 Why not? We allready have an overveat mechanic for all ship components ingame and heat management overall is a huge task in any spacecraft. All energy that is produced and used inside of the ship turns into heat, which has to go somewhere. If you have to move heat around, boiling and condensing liquids is the way to go. Even the copper heatpipes of todays pc coolers are hollow and do contain a medium, which boils and condenses while moving heat throgh the pipe.
"Counter boarding" should work only if "things"' are disabled enough for the security to be not working right ? On a locked ship, someone without sufficient access rights shouldn't be able to call the elevator or open door, right ?
This is great for players who have people to play with but for solo players this will be a huge slog having to deal with all these components unless they can find a way for players to be able to control these directly from the cockpit, at least until we get NPC crews who i assume should be capable of managing this, hopefully
This looks amazing! The fact is that the gladius's really should have a hard time dealing with a ship this size and heavily armored without a dedicated ship to damage the A2. Seems like it is where it roughly should be.
Yeah, it should basically be like these gladius's are there to take out the other fighters and disable turrets/precisely strike areas so that an ares or similar class ship can come in to disable/destroy the rest of the ship. A fully crewed ship should be able to keep up with the damage of a similar amount of gladius's, but ships more designed to fight large ships or a larger number of fighters/a less crewed large ship should be able to overwhelm the engineers.
Yeah, a few gladius vs hurcules should end in boarding like this, if you want to completely destroy an A2, bringing something dedicated like an Ares or Eclipse should be incentivised.
Oh man, this looks exactly what I've always wanted for large ship combat! Especially when it comes to piracy: I'm a cargo runner but a big fan of piracy in the game adding real jeopardy and emergent gameplay opportunities, but I've been dreaming of the day when pirates won't just blow up my ship but will probably have to board me instead and we can shoot it out face to face inside, like how cool will that be!!! Also, massive thanks for showcasing the potential of engineering in such a fun and easy to understand video; my excitement for 3.23, which had dropped to almost zero after the cargo fiasco, has shot right back up again after seeing this.
This might be too much to ask but f*ck it, its CIG its worth a shot. Since we already have bullets going trough ships, how awsome would it be if there were some effects for that? like bullet holes, not trough the whole ship but at least a sprite, or a little surface deformation like on the ships outside, plus some sparks. Running inside a ship trying to repair while you see bullets flying trough would be awsome
If they can make this like an old Star Trek episode, where you have to get main engineering back online in 10 seconds or everyone is dead, or order someone to reroute auxiliary power through the main deflector, that would be pretty cool.
I feel like this should be added on after they iron out more of the bugs... Sucks to load up an A2 with 6 people to end up hitting an invisible asteroid or ship, sending you all back to respawn
That was fun Mike, thanks for sharing this. I can't help but think how this will all go down once ship interiors catch fire, that should add an entire layer to this experience. Cheers o7
IMO you dont make the gladius experience like that. Gladius guns shouldnt be strong enough to damage a massive ship like an A2, at least not quickly. I would say that the gladius mode, one player should have an eclipse or something.
I almost feel like there could be a specialist armor that has an integrated damage report panel or something, while not offering any ballistic protection etc. Specialist armor has a lot of potential in general and this goes for engineering to
You know what would be awesome. A 2 part extraction game where you made your own evacuation. 1 stage, a conventional fps extraction shooter; 2nd stage: defending your ship in space till you reach, lets say, a jump point.
Ah, so this is what makes a multi-crew ship so dangerous. A solo fighter isn't going to have this level of control over a fight, but can act as a second major gunner who has greater freedom to circle a large ship and with communicable instructions from the "mothership", can focus on key targets. Now, finally, ship battles won't appear to be just a mess of people trying to hit each other; there's actual strategy involved. One thing I didn't notice, are you able to see if the other ships power is completely down and unable to turn back on (because they haven't repaired it over a certain time, like you would expect)?
I went into the ePTU last night into the PU, and the C2s life support systems were all offline. I nearly suffocated. Nothing would fix that, reclaiming the ship, upgrading the parts, removing and replacing relay fuses, the ships is just plain broken. That's my first experience of engineering gameplay.
Things will get way more complex ... I don't know if I like it yet, but targeting subcomponent being useful is nice. I mean, the idea will be to make the ship basically unusable (you can board without issue if they got nothing to repair it, no more fuses, or if components are damaged beyond repair), but after boarding you will have to have enough ressources to be able to repair it if you really want to do something with the ship. I don't know, about what it will be in the future ... Sure it lloks exiting to have all those new things, it also means ships flying with less than the recommended crew size will probably suffer a lot from it and be screwed, meaning bigger ships size (that can be beautiful/funny/whatever to fly) will be a burden for some players ... :/
This is just awesome. It opens up so many possibilities. I think it's time for ppl to stop calling SC a tech demo. I think the final xenothreat mission - boarding the Idris, is prelude to what's coming for capital ship battles. OMG!
Certainly turning into something. I would take out the fuses and simplify this so that the " Fuses " are just boxes on the wall in need of repair. Visually the crew can see their repair condition " ie water coming through hole in ship sea of thieves style ". Components might only be able to be repaired with a quick repair so many times before repairs are useless and more substantial work needs to be done to them and even then they don't hit the same level of performance as you would get with a new component or a space station fix up. Same gameplay, same communication but less fussing with fuses. This is a rare example where I am saying... simplify :)
I saw a chat message saying, approximately, "what if it never stops moving, hope they fix it", I think in such a game, if there is nothing that can stop the ship (no more power, not thrusters in that direction, etc.) from rotating, then it should keep rotating ..!
If only big ships stayed that strong with multi crew. Its kinda sad when you have large ship which can get destroyed in no time by few single seat fighters...
I want to see more of this! I would eat this content up if its on the regular. Has me hyped for all the ships to get the resource Network and Armor/Maelstrom
I can just foresee teams of players landing big ships on a planet somewhere or in space and just running drills on boarding the ships, training to do it for real.
When 3.23 goes live, and better when 3.23+ drops, we are closser to NPC Crew and AI Blades, thedevs have said it wont be long, and its on the ROADMAP, so not long now, i really wnat to SOLO my Javelin, Perseus and Polaris, will also make using the Mole easier with my NPC Crew, cant wait for my BMM also, fully crewed and a real bitch in Pyro. Coming soon i am told by the community
Engineering is turned upside down in SC. Every ship should have backup systems and two or three backup routes and actually automatic replacement of damaged components. There is plenty of unused space in every ship for spare components. After all, you are flying to the stars. I can imagine switching individual paths when damaged. Instruct the energy cell to be replaced with another one. But through MOBI. Physically running around the ship to replace individual relays and other nonsense seems like nonsense to me. Maybe only when all backup systems are gone. No aircraft would ever be put into service without backup systems. And not a spaceship at all. And why does engineering actually have its own console? Why doesn't MOBI automatically connect to the engineering system when starting? It feels like a combination of technologies from different time periods. "We drive cars, but we beat each other with wooden sticks." And that's actually how the whole game looks like. "We can fly to the stars, but we can't create our own POIs on the map. How the hell did we get to those stars if we can't chart our own course"?
now *that* is the proper defense/staying power of a large ship vs small ships. Glad to finally see large ships get the respect they deserve. It will cost ammo + wear&tear to take down large ships, making them potentially not worth it without proper support. It will be more worth going for the disable than it will be going for the kill. It should take *significant* effort to fully destroy ships, while disabling/disrupting should be more of the norm. There should be munitions made for little damage to the ship, but higher penetration and disruption of crew, I.e. firestarters, gas bombs, ECM, etc. in order to disrupt engineering/repair efforts. "Firebomb penetrated hull in the cargo bay and is about to detonate in 27 seconds!! get to it and disarm!" Munitions that normally destroyed ships will instead cause massive, penetrating damage along with knocking crew on their ass and with concussion without the proper protective gear on like torpedos. Great to see this progress.
Looks very fun indeed. But hardly that's going to be the pvp experience in PU. There is really no reason to have 5-6 players on your ship, so 99% of the encounters are going to be the same - disable the defenseless ship, board and kill the pilot with no weapons.
This looks like a lot of fun. Also love the weird moment you can see the other A2 from the engineering panel. That feels like that shouldnt happen lol, guess it is a test though.
I...really hate the look of the precision mode zoom in. feels very starfield and looks like it takes away from your flying the ship. haven't tried it yet of course but i didnt understand the implementation to begin with. cycling through components targeting is enough... a Picture in picture would probably be better. mechwarrior3 style :)
Hey Mike! Great video. It was quite refreshing hearing you go from disappointment to truly having fun. Engineering play is a game changer and its going to open up another game loop for big ship battles and it is going to enhance piracy game play. I cannot wait. Thanks for the awesome video.
This looks pretty cool, i like it, but they need to increase crew compliment, you wont be able to do engineering and operatimg the ship with 8 duds max crew cap lol, no imagine the HH, polaris or worst, the Perseus with only 3 people crew, thats why real warships have hundreds to thousands of crew members
Was the time to disable condensed somewhat in the video? It seemed too far too easy for a gladius to disable an A2. Were there multiple gladius’? Do the ships elevators have a fuse? I think the video shows that there needs to be multiple ways to get down to the cargo bay. Perhaps at least 2 ladders? It seems too easy to cover the lift and ladder whilst the cargo is being stolen. Eventually, disabling gravity will be a thing, as will smoke and fires.
So now there will be sub components to main components. Geez, the price of flying a big ship is rising. If they can figure away to hack system components to open enemy doors etc, that will be awesome. Just got to figure a way to balance it properly. I dont like the fact that you can not blow up the ship though. Players can just allow the other team to disable the ship just to set up a trap when I board the ship.
This looks pretty fun, but in AC isn’t it super risky to leave your ship and board the enemy ship? Like, technically couldn’t you just allow them to disable you so that they all board you and then you shoot them to death as they come? 😂
I imagine military grade ships will have redundancy systems or dual fuse channels backups etc to grant them superior combat performance compared to cargo type ships or haulers.
I like the idea of big ships being super tanky, but the parts getting disabled, and making it so boarding gameplay actually has a role. And honestly speaking, I don't want the little ships like the gladius to be good at disabling larger ships, you should need a medium or heavy fighter to do that, but those ships would be weak to the small ships. We need some differentiation in ship class, and this seems like the first steps in the right direction.
They are next to impossible to blow up but the components take damage, you can occasionally see laser and bullet penetration from the enemy ship when I am in the interior
Thats totaly intentionell. Its a goal that ships dont just blow up anymore. Only due to catastrophic failures of components like power plants, qd and alike. And maybe violent crashes.
Mike advise from an old cod player, jump or slide around every corner and pre aim where you believe they might be. Will be particularly helpful for situations like this 12:55
This is how it should be. Fighters are anti-interceptor/bomber. They should be useless against large ships, thats what bombers and heavy fighters are for.
this seems SO cool, makes it so that as a solo its not worth driving around of these big ships because if you dont have a crew for engineering and they shoot a couple key components your pretty much dead in the water, unlike right now where the bigger the ship the better because they are complete tanks that smaller ships just take way too long to actually kill, but thats obviously going to change with engineering, cant wait!
Eventually things in motion in space will continue to stay in perpetual motion in a coming update, i heard. Boarding is going to be a bit more difficult then, but at the same time the crew might over-G themselves unconscious by spinning too fast, so you could use a tractor beam of sorts to stop the ship perhaps
Once they add this to the game it will ruin the game so people better get the fuck ready, you think your gonna spend money and fly around without any freinds ahahaha it wont be possible anymore, star citizen will become a job.
This is the star citizen I've been waiting for. Ship battles that aren't over in seconds or a minute and don't end with a ship exploding 95% of the time.
I hate the idea behind the relays being destroyable, they're tiny objects the odds of them taking a hit should be very low and its just created a whack-a-mole that is not logical or rewarding.
*slow clap* some polish some time two years woah. No one going to argue with the momentum, this is the next step that sea of thieves, and many companies had, This is the first time Star Citizen, looked in game like what one day will all hoped for.
I understand that what they are trying to do is groundbreaking, but overall its really going to take alot longer than ppl think. I mean years before we get to where its enough to play everyday as well as stable. Guess as long as they keep updating the backbones its ok, but i mean at some point i want a game before i die
I think it makes sense that the light fighter like the gladius, even if theres three of them, cannot just shred bigger size ships with their Gatling guns because they are just that, light fighter size gatling guns.
This is just boarding, as it happens in live with piracy and soft kill mechanics, how does this show engineering in any way? You just stop caring about the fuses the second one side had the upper hand and then its just normal FPS. There arent even any interesting power dynamics where you could trap intruders somewhere by disabling the door or something...Precision mode as you say isnt worth it .. I dont get how this changed your life unless you never boarded an A2 in the PU so far.
First, nope I never really did piracy in SC, the title is a meme, and the game is entirely different: new Eva, better gunplay, the need to communicate on the A2 side…Comon man, I swear I am damned if I do…damned if I don’t.
Meh. Making it mostly about the fuses makes it like patching holes in Sea of Thieves. Just a bit more annoying. It's not really engineering in a classical sci-fi sense. It's more like being a fuse monkey. Repairing components, adjusting power distribution, replacing a part or fuse every once in a while sounds fun. But this, this is a bit mindless and doesn't really require a lot of skill. Just running around.
I agree but also I feel like this is the wrong way to see the systems in action, even though it's the devs themselves showcasing it like this I feel like this gameplay is more suited for after-the-fact repairs and patching your ship back up to make it to the next repair station more than it's meant to be repairing stuff mid-fight.
In the future engineering will have more things to do like being able to control gravity, life support, etc. Space Tomato's latest video goes over that

Solid thoughts, I like those ideas.
As we slowly wave goodbye to solo game play and hello to constantly stopping to refuel.
there will be plenty of solo gameplay, there just won't be ridiculous matchups like solo small ships vs medium/large ships but there will be options to do things like take your small ship and hunt other small ships.
Not hydraulic fluid or fuel, but steam? lol cool ideas but why steam?🤔
I'm beyond happy to not see a single A2 explode. This is what I have always wanted from these bigger ships.
would be awesome if engines after being repaired random number of times would just explode, but only doing local damage to the ship...
@@gregoriodia 😩 don't tease me with these dreams like that. I've been here too long to have a glimmer of hope around gameplay.
omg THAT WAS INSANE! I love this! Imagine something like this happening in the PU at a random time!
LOVE Thinking about shaving my ballz before I learn about engineering 🥜🥜!
Actually this engineering mode is very similar to my real life job as control room operator in a railway station in Rome, Italy

*takes pin out of grenade* >:D

Ah, so this is what makes a multi-crew ship so dangerous. A solo fighter isn't going to have this level of control over a fight, but can act as a second major gunner who has greater freedom to circle a large ship and with communicable instructions from the "mothership", can focus on key targets. Now, finally, ship battles won't appear to be just a mess of people trying to hit each other; there's actual strategy involved. One thing I didn't notice, are you able to see if the other ships power is completely down and unable to turn back on (because they haven't repaired it over a certain time, like you would expect)?
I'm not sure myself, I'm only guessing. I'm thinking that the pilot or co pilot may be able to see from targeting, via IR and EM readings
OMG!
Was fun to play, thx for the invite o7
Certainly turning into something. I would take out the fuses and simplify this so that the " Fuses " are just boxes on the wall in need of repair. Visually the crew can see their repair condition " ie water coming through hole in ship sea of thieves style ". Components might only be able to be repaired with a quick repair so many times before repairs are useless and more substantial work needs to be done to them and even then they don't hit the same level of performance as you would get with a new component or a space station fix up. Same gameplay, same communication but less fussing with fuses. This is a rare example where I am saying... simplify :)
What is the name of the RUclips channel? from Hannah

@@SaltEMike Thank you :3
If this was planetside, with some tanks and an idris to capture, we're looking at a new battlefield 2142 Titan mode
I saw a chat message saying, approximately, "what if it never stops moving, hope they fix it", I think in such a game, if there is nothing that can stop the ship (no more power, not thrusters in that direction, etc.) from rotating, then it should keep rotating ..!
All the lawnmowers chafed my ballsack when not using the distancer attached :( I have a slice off ballsack to prove it.
If only big ships stayed that strong with multi crew. Its kinda sad when you have large ship which can get destroyed in no time by few single seat fighters...
this looks adequately mediocre
I want to see more of this! I would eat this content up if its on the regular. Has me hyped for all the ships to get the resource Network and Armor/Maelstrom
I can just foresee teams of players landing big ships on a planet somewhere or in space and just running drills on boarding the ships, training to do it for real.
I know it's still only a concept but the idea that fuses hold everything is not interesting to me. Hopefully there'll be more to it
When 3.23 goes live, and better when 3.23+ drops, we are closser to NPC Crew and AI Blades, thedevs have said it wont be long, and its on the ROADMAP, so not long now, i really wnat to SOLO my Javelin, Perseus and Polaris, will also make using the Mole easier with my NPC Crew, cant wait for my BMM also, fully crewed and a real bitch in Pyro.
"We drive cars, but we beat each other with wooden sticks."
And that's actually how the whole game looks like.
"We can fly to the stars, but we can't create our own POIs on the map. How the hell did we get to those stars if we can't chart our own course"?
What a fantastic video Mike! Thank you for your perspective (and Hanna). You really showed off how cool engineering will be! Awesome work!
now *that* is the proper defense/staying power of a large ship vs small ships.
"Firebomb penetrated hull in the cargo bay and is about to detonate in 27 seconds!! get to it and disarm!"
Munitions that normally destroyed ships will instead cause massive, penetrating damage along with knocking crew on their ass and with concussion without the proper protective gear on like torpedos.
I...really hate the look of the precision mode zoom in. feels very starfield and looks like it takes away from your flying the ship. haven't tried it yet of course but i didnt understand the implementation to begin with. cycling through components targeting is enough... a Picture in picture would probably be better. mechwarrior3 style :)
my favorite moment 19:30 || 19:00 🤣
Amazing. It actually seems like CIG is focusing on developing gameplay for a change. Better late than never!
Players can just allow the other team to disable the ship just to set up a trap when I board the ship.
the world tournaments are gonna be insane to watch! this is gonna be great.
Tournaments at CitizenCon :)
Oh shock horror. These ships to the equivalent to an M4 rifle, aren't blowing up this other ship to the equivalent of a Tiger tank. Shock!
So I don't get it, so they A2s cant blow up? Or did y'all just agree not to blow up the other ship once it was disabled?
They are next to impossible to blow up but the components take damage, you can occasionally see laser and bullet penetration from the enemy ship when I am in the interior
@@SaltEMike Ohhh, thanks for the clarification.
Mike I know you gotta do some clickbait here and there, but cmon! Your life? This shit ain't changing even an afternoon
this seems SO cool, makes it so that as a solo its not worth driving around of these big ships because if you dont have a crew for engineering and they shoot a couple key components your pretty much dead in the water, unlike right now where the bigger the ship the better because they are complete tanks that smaller ships just take way too long to actually kill, but thats obviously going to change with engineering, cant wait!
This kind of reminds my of the old SW Battlefront 2 and I'm here for it.
Imagine if we had Engineering during the blockade event. All these solo Hercules would be on fire
Sniping should be the hardest way to play. Sniper shots should be the most influenced by the environment.
I think it makes sense that the light fighter like the gladius, even if theres three of them, cannot just shred bigger size ships with their Gatling guns because they are just that, light fighter size gatling guns.
bruh that first fight with the A2 was the most boring thing ever, slow combat speeds looks really lame man
I'm so glad to hear that engineering is adding so much depth to the game. It also terrifies me as I fly a Carrack solo as a cargo hauler.
Not talking about engineering but with my org we have been doing piracy this way for years now 😂
Where can I find that ring rgb for the shure sm7b mic? Please someone help! 😂
Light fighters shouldn't be able to take out a significantly larger ship.
That's frigging awesome that the ships don't blow up 👏🏻👏🏻
Awesome video mike. That last battle was crazy!
This looks like a lot to keep up with Solo, is this system going to live?
Shouldn't the helmet provide more info about teammates ?
Go to a doctor, something is going wrong if SC is changing your life. Get well soon.
And here i was thinking on being an ingeneer and chilling on the ship, looks more challenging that i thought!
Oh yeah....It's all coming together.
So what do you want, puzzles to repair? I mean its a game, not real life.
Space Tomato's latest video goes over that
The best part: “Uh Oh” …. “You’ve killed us all”
