The Monday before Match Day students receive an email stating if they matched (with the location revealed during the ceremony). If you receive an email saying that you didn’t match, you have the opportunity to participate in the second round of matching called SOAP (Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program) where these students can apply for unfilled positions. It’s a very short application cycle that all takes place that week. If the student doesn’t match after that, it’s a variety of options that do not involve residency, such as taking research positions, until they can apply again the following year.
The people that matched typically attend the match ceremony, applicants are told a week before whether they have matched or not, and at the end of the week, they find out what program they have matched to at one of these events put on by their school. So if you didn't match or you don't want to attend for some reason, you don't have to come.
So excited for everyone! Congrats! 🎉
what happens to those who dont match in these ceremonies?
