I really love how you just don't stop with trying to develop the perfect prosthesis. some people wouldve stopped at the first one you made but youve just kept on going and kept on trying to make the best hand you possibly can and I think thats just amazing. Thanks for the video Ian
I mean he quite literally has skin in the game, he doesn't really have a choice
and he's sharing it for anyone to see and not charging thousands of dollars
@@Alucard-gt1zf He didn't need to make a 3d printable one, his personal hand is made of metal. And he could also quite easily be charging a lot of money for his designs.
It's always an Ian who makes the best stuff. Ian Goodfellow
@@Alucard-gt1zf How many handicapped people do you know that dedicate this much effort to assisting their own disability? No choice my ass lol.
Dude has a steampunk hand. That's badass. If I ever get my fingers cut off, I'm buying his.
This is awesome and actually helps disabled people!!! Keep on going man, you are making history
This looks like snakes prosthetic arm in metal gear solid 5 wow
Very slick and aesthetic while it's being practical. Your skill to maintain both features is envious.
I'm happy to witness your progress just in time like this.
Epic, full support man, you are showing what De Vinci and others couldnt do in their lifetime
I have never been more excited from the thought of losing my fingers.
You're very impressive man, my dad has a manufacturing background and I've been sharing your videos to him, he loves your stuff. I do too. You could be put down in medical books someday as the guy who invented the best prosthetic hands. I wouldn't be surprised to see that. Sorry you lost the majority of the hand though. At least your thumb made it and that's the most important one imo
NOBODY get into a fist fight with this man. very cool prosthetic hands!
I love the amount of effort you put in not just for yourself, but for everyone who might need this!
This is sooo sooo AWESOMEEE, are you making it an open source project so that people could tweak it and make them designed according to there needs? because I can see a huge 3D printing community that could mod in infinite ways....
Keep doing God's work, my friend. If I ever meet somebody that could benefit from your work, I'll be sure to point them in your direction.
I'd love to see these made using a powder bed laser sintered 3D printer, it typically gives you injection-molded style durability. Lighter might be better for faster hand movement, could yield some interesting results :)
This is fucking incredible
YT unsubbed me awhile back, it's nice to see how this has been progressing
Thanks for finding your way back!
in my case the fingers isnt lost but cant move, need something like exoskeleton to control or adjustable splinter to make it usable
Who knows what we can make 10 years down the road
This is frickin sweet.
You are an anime character...the one to take your place will be making automail. i appreciate you
w prototype
In a joking way now I wanna cut my hand off to look this cool
I love seeing you consistently progress and improve upon the prosthetic. It's like seeing someone invent automail in real life
Awesome
@@automailmechanic940 lol ur nickname
Awesome
dude this is so cyberpunky! just the concept of being able to PRINT OUT FINGERS is insane, and you managed to not only actually print them, but also make them functional. really cool dude!
I have super high hopes for the powder metal sls printed versions. I'm hoping they are just the right weight, the plastic ones are way too light.
@@missingpartsclub I imagine with most printed parts the longevity isn't good, but must be such a time saver when testing designs before milling!
@@joshyc2006 besides, for those not having Ian's resources as skills, and pondering how affordable a 3D printer is, plastic pieces that wears out become easily replaceable by themselves.
@@joshyc2006 The metal printing (SLS, EBM, binder-sinter) technologies that exist nowadays are capable of producing parts that are just as strong as milled parts. The main drawback is lower accuracy and surface finish, but any critical surfaces can be finished post-print.
The convenience of being able to send your STLs to a company, pay them some money, and get your parts within a few business days made out of solid metal, is amazing.
@@missingpartsclub Are the plastic ones too light for a kid to use though? Just wondering.
I'm not an amputee, doctor, or any kind of specialist, but as an artist interested in the different forms of mechanical prosthetics that could soon be available to us, I find this kind of stuff you're doing so fascinating, in regards to my own art and in the real world. Thanks!
Industrial design sounds like something you'd be a natural in. A dance of form and functionality.
as a medical engineer student I think that what you're doing is amazing and I hope one day I can make something like this as well
Rooting for you, stay motivated :)
But as of now, my child, you shall spread the message of medical engineering with a Megumin anime girl profile picture
Yeah give big pharma more ways to screw people over 🙄
@@lorenzopollocaffe6277 may his explosions be grand, and his memes everlasting.
wow cool thanks for the input so cool wow
Welldone mahn! I’m sure everyone who needs this is infinitely grateful that you’re doing this work
You're really taking the individual tinkerer approach to invention to an extreme! I've been watching these videos for years now, you're a huge inspiration.
true
This is incredible! I can’t tell you how awe inspiring your videos are and now seeing this next iteration that other people will be able to make had my jaw dropped for most of the video!
Give him some time, he'll be able to make a prosthetic jaw for you so it doesn't drop again! :D
This is sick! It's like automail from Fullmetal Alchemist! Keep up on the amazing work you're doing in creating a fully functional prosthetic readily available to improve people's lives!
Did you know this is already available for download?
This is the first video of yours I've seen, and I gotta say, I'm really mesmerized by the aluminum prosthetic. The way you effortlessly control it really gives me the sweet cyborg vibes (specifically the cyborg pirate from Disney's treasure planet 😄)
I really admire that you are willing to work that prosthetic hand for those who do not have the same resources as you.
You are everything I aspire to be, thank you for all your work.
I'll take de time to share this to my friends ;]
Thanks! I appreciate it.
This was always one of the great promises of 3D printing and you're actually putting in the hard work to make it real. This might be a silly thought experiment for you but I can't help but see an enormous amount of potential.
It's interesting how this prosthetic also reflects how far 3D printing technology has come. If I remember correctly back to your older videos you used to have 3D printed fingers that you didn't really deem practical as a daily driver, but the technology has caught up to your needs (I see that Bambulab X1 back there!). Really cool to see how you take advantage of the changing 3D printing landscape.
Ian I just love how you are trying make your designs available to the public for however needs it, really encouraging seeing your progress in designing prosthetics
The 3D printer sure comes in handy for rapid prototyping. I'm always amazed and excited when you post a new video!
You should put a patent on that, I'm sure some company could be interested at some point ... And it save you from having your creation stolen from you too😉
Any chance we'll see the STL files?
Hopefully folks donate or pay for those files if he does share them designing such mechanics takes a lot of ingenuity and engineering.
I’m assuming you have design patents for these? It’s such an amazing innovation, and I love the way it looks. Purple is my favorite color lol love your videos!
to get a patent in the us, you have to publicly release manufacturing instructions and then hire a team of lawyers enforce it
@@voidwyrm6149 then just get a patent in europe or smth
If I've understood Ian throughout his videos, I don't think he wants any patents anyways. I think he genuinely just wants to help other amputees out there make the most of what they have left with some awesome creative technology.
Edit: I believe he also shares his designs freely, it's up to others out there to take inspiration from those designs and alter them as necessary for their own unique body.
@@southernflatland Make them publicly. If he doesn't directly release them as public domain, they may get copyrighten and patented by someone else.
Patents are useless to us, it's only a tool for corporations to keep their copyright.
I guess i kind of expected as much from a machinist, but the quality on those 3d prints really look incredible man. Best of luck with the next iterations, hope it works out for you
it's always great seeing an update video from you every 2 or so months pop into my recommended feed, more power to you man, you're a huge inspiration
Ian you're changing the game man. Bravo the new hand looks incredible
You've come a long way man! I work in M industrial setting and I was always really worried about accidents and losing limbs or digits thinking it would be an end to a routine life. But after following your content I can now see just how well prothstetics can aid someone with missing body parts. What you do is really cool. I'm always exited to see what you're coming up with next.
It looks cool 😎
I've just come across your channel for the first thanks to the lovely RUclips algorithm. This project is so encouraging and your commitment to help others is so refreshing to see. Personally, I was born without any fingers on my left hand and I never had any prior consideration for prosthetic replacements due to its costs in price. You've earned a subscriber and I also hope to start my own journey for creating my own finger prosthetics!
I can totally imagine this becoming modular pieces you can adjust for all ages and hand sizes, once the finger mechanics is completed. Great work coming so far with this!
So, you are basically pioneering advanced hand cybernetics, I've been following you since you first started posting and honestly I'm astonished, this is Nobel Peace Prize level stuff, your work should be the standard for all prosthesis going forward, your creations compared to what's commonly available are amazing, how have you not been heavily commended for this up until this point is beyond me, cybernetics need all the advances it can get and you my good friend did what most of us thought impossible not more than a decade ago, you can do great things with this.
Thanks! I too wonder what I'm doing wrong that I haven't been picked up by one of the major players. I interviewed with ossur's president of r&d a couple of years ago and really thought it was going to go somewhere, but unfortunately nothing... they're really excited about what I'm doing, but not excited enough to cut me a check. I'll get picked up someday...
@@missingpartsclub maybe they will pick up you if you will try one more time? Couple of years, it's a long term, maybe they changed their mind in this time
Nobel Medical Prize
Just found your channel and I have to say that this has got to be one of the coolest and most innovative things I've seen in a while. I didn't even know something like this was possible but I hope it goes well for you and that you're able to get this out to people who need it.
So cool!! I'm glad to see the possibility of being able to get this design out there for people to make themselves!! Also the cat at the end makes me so happy lskdfjsld
Cannot wait to see it move!
It looks amazingly useful!
A guy designing and building functioning prosthetics for himself is just about the coolest thing ever to me, not sure why but it speaks to me on a visceral level.
Subscribed about a month ago , I’m blown away with your ingenuity and the design is so cyberpunk it’s amazing ! Can’t wait to see the progress bro happy building take care 😁✊🏽
Love this new design! Can't wait to see what comes next for this as it looks way lighter and convenient I think
This is insanely awesome. I have been following you for years now and I am always impressed and inspired by the progress of your builds. :)
So dedicated he cut off his fingers for RUclips
This is so amazing and so good that you are working towards making these designs available to others. Your prosthetic designs are so versatile in what they do that they are nothing short of genius
*FROM THE MOMENT I UNDERSTOOD THE WEAKNESS OF MY FLESH. IT DISGUSTED ME.*
Woah! I had a random thought about prosthetic hands yesterday and now I see this in my recommended!
I have an interest in engineering and I love seeing how the human body moves so prosthetics has always been in my interest even if I have no use for them.
Good job man! Comments help with the algorithm so I’ll share by putting a comment!
Incredible what you have already done to reduce part count! If you haven't heard of flextures or bending joints, it might be worth a look up. With 3d printing, making durable, flexible, and strong parts using a single piece of plastic is not a reasonable thing to make. Hope this helps! :) (Veritasium has some great intro videos on them)
I look forward to seeing the progress you make on the 3D printed steel. Seeing how close in dimensions that was to your real hand was just insane, I've been watching your hand evolve since I think iteration 2 or 3, and I'm excited to see where this goes in the future
We like to consult you as our expertise,we are Thai Reach group working for the Leprosy clients in Thailand 🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤👍👍👍
Absolutely beautiful engineering as usual. You never cease to amaze in what you so man. Props to the cat for having input too
I don't have missing fingers and I'd willingly buy this for a friend or two who need them. Heck, just to have a pair and share the news!
You're doing a work that so few can do, and just seeing this as even a sliver on inspiration for people just makes it amazing.
Thinking of the application of having lost fingers replaced with a controllable prosthetic as small as these just makes the world feel a lot better.
Keep the dream strong, Ian! And I'll be posting this to however many places I can.
Awesome stuff, and exciting progress that you are making. can't wait to see the 3d printed metal parts too!
I hope one day that every person who wants one can have a cheap, durable, and well-articulated prosthetic like you Sir. Thank you for working on designs to improve the existing technology for others with no mechanical engineering skill.
Your work is going to live on for a long time Mr. Davis! Every time I watch your videos, I think about the millions of people that will be benefiting from your designs in the future, you really are an innovator!
Can you start a company we can invest in?!
@@InspectahPatio the last thing that needs to happen is that these prosthetics follow in the footsteps of insulin.
@@JimJamTheAdmin Very true!
I love these guys that work on 3D prostetics. Their rooms always look messy and their desktops are always full of previous iterations of their work. They are like mad scientists but not mad as insane, but as rebel, independent from the military industrial complex.
about 2 years I was giving up on life I couldnt find independence with my disability (epilepsy) Felt hopeless. Machining always captured my interest it's truly an art. Well, thank you Ian for your constantly inspiring videos. You're a true hero of youtube.
I am a 24 y/o college student, just changed my major to engineering you are my inspiration. I ride EUC, I understand the feeling, people will take one look at you and realize we are really living in the future.
You know how they say it’s your own sanity that stops you from biting your fingers off ? Well, not saying I’m insane but did someone say IRL DLC ??
Always cool stuff. Maybe you'll get picked up if you make them inaccessibly expensive haha
While this doesn't help me personally I live seeing channels that follow a project like this. Keep up the great work, and I hope you can help as many people as possible with your work!
What about being able to sculpt figures with clay with prosthetic hands?
I sure hope he doesn't ruin the multi billion dollar prosthetics market and mysteriously disappears leaving no trace of his work
One of my friends lost his Pinky and Ring fingers in an accident, and it's nice knowing people like you are out there trying to make projects like these
Ok it sucks that this guy lost his fingers but it would be really hard for me to not laugh if he somehow lost his remaining fingers while trying to make prosthetic fingers.
These are some badass looking prosthetics you've got and the idea of them being more accessible to people in need makes me so happy
You are seriously one of the most inspiring people I've ever encountered. Your resolve for functional prosthetics is incredible. I'd love to create a character based on you for a table top RPG campaign. But I hope you wouldn't find that insulting.
World needs engineers like that! People should wake up and look at this amazing stuff instead of tiktoks
I don't know much about this kind of thing, but i can at least say it's fascinating and inspiring.
this is so sick I have a friend missing most of her right fingers and it's hard to find a good prosthetic
hope this gets to the people who need it!
fucken neaaaaaat
also, i think i speak for all of us when i say we would like to see cat in next video(s) : )
this man is out here do more for the prosthetic industry than half of the billion dollar companies out there.
You should make these things for other people who are missing their fingers and then fight them
This video is incredible uplifting and speaks of an indominatble will and larger-than-life positivsm to make life better for so many people. And it adds cat power ! Probably the most positive 3 minutes of YT I've seen in a very, very long time. I can only bow in deep respect, Mr. Davis.
Wow. You are one smart dude! Necessity is the mother of invention. Totally awesome job. Seriously, you are going to help many!
every year or so, youtube gives me an update on this man and his prosthetic. im glad tbh
The conversation with your cat was honestly the highlight.
People like you are a great example of why humans are awesome.
I'm new to your videos but this is amazing crafting. I love how expressive the metal fingers are as you talk, there is something really wonderful about that, as well as your obvious talent in creating something so necessary and functional. A pleasure to watch and learn, thank you
My father recently lost his fingers in a construction accident and I would absolutely love to be able to print him something like this before he gets a professional pair down the road. Will be checking in for updates and possible models to download!
Yo that's awesome! Glad to see you're working with a 3D printer now. Keep up the great work!
