- In this video I dispel the notion that my Prosthetic hand is nothing more than CGI. I also take the time to explain in depth how the mechanics of my hand operate in order to function in such an anthropomorphic way.

I think it's funny that people just can't accept that you're just a really intelligent guy who has built a bunch of partial prosthetics by yourself, for yourself, with only one and a half hands.
Those same people are likely the ones who also say that aliens built the pyramids and that humans haven't gone into space. Some people cannot fathom an intelligence greater than their own unless it is somehow extra-human/divine/magical.

@anonymous_protagonist I mean isn't saying that the group of people who dont believe in his prostetic, also are deliusional about historical events a straw man argument or the very least the beginning of one.
I agree that it's quite clear that his hand is real, but not all of the people who didn't believe it before, aren't all completely delusional. I think it's fine that people were skeptical a bit, but this video should put that to rest.
The reason I'm even commenting about this, is that its possible that in some contexts people may have a hard time believing in how truly extraordinary the prosthetic thats been built and that's ok. It's really only after very clear evidence is presented and if it's still denied then I think we can start to say someone is likely delusional.

You touched upon the basis for my statement. With even the slightest bit of due diligence the deniers could've reviewed the available evidence of the prosthetics' development as documented in his videos and seen that it is obviously real. Those that chose to deny the available evidence are delusional and those that didn't bother are willfully ignorant. Both are traits exhibited by alien historians and space deniers.
The clowns saying this is CGI:
1)Need their eyes checked
2)Have unrealistic ideas about how expensive realistic CGI is
3)both

A prosthetic hand built entirely with mechanical components without the need for chips, servos, or batteries while being this articulated is pretty dang impressive.
Even more impressive when you consider he built it with his own one and a half hands.
Its a bionic hand actually for that precise reason. Prosthetics by definition have no articulating parts; theyre limited to things like peg legs, spoon legs, hook hands, etc.
Everything else is bionic, "bion" meaning "life" & the suffix "ic" meaning "like" in latin.

More progress has been made with prosthetics by random guys in their garages in the past decade than the entire medical industry in the past century

As a CGI artist myself, I can only be flattered people would think us both creative and knowledgeable enough in engineering to come up with something like that.

Basically every dismissal of someone's skill with the cry of of "it's CGI!" are just unintentional backhanded compliments.
For real though, doing this to the level of realism displayed in these videos through CGI would require herculean efforts on its own right. It wouldn't actually be less work to fake it, it would just be a different kind of insane workload. Arguably, it would be *harder* to fake it with no errors you can catch.
Like, the only situation in which it makes any sense to fake this would be if the hand literally cannot exist in reality and function like it does. Otherwise, there's not really a budget cap on how much you'd have to spend to get rid of all the artifacts. There's a reason why you can spot CGI at a glance in TV shows, if you actually know what you're looking at.
ahh dont sell yourself short :D Im sure you could create something like this in CGI.
Take 3D printers for example. I have seen clips of some really intersting stuff with moving parts and all, created in one single production. For that, the Creator has to program the Object in a 3D software, correct? If there is no conflict in the 3D software, it should work as real object.
i have no clue how CGI artists work, but isnt there a slight similarity between the processes of creating a digital 3D object for a 3D printer and creating a 3D object for CGI?

The hard part is compositing it into an existing scene in a way that is correct.
When I saw violet evergarden in the background I expected this to be a neat video about making fake prosthetics for cosplay and stuff but instead I just learnt that there now are people who don't even believe in simple mechanics
Imagine what Ian could do for cosplay, given that he builds this stuff at this quality and level of usability for practical real-life use...
Of course "simple mechanics" is a lie --- it doesn't support a flat earth and therefore is necessarily false. Surely? Hm.

To any of you nay sayers. Ian has been a friend for quite sometime... i was introduced to him by another fab shop who didnt want to do the small number of parts i was looking for.. Ian is very intelligent and skilled at what he does... i can tell you his hand 100% real and totally functional.. hes offered to do a single digit for me because i lost my pointer finger.. he took a mold of it. I just havent had time to visit him and work out the details....😊❤

As someone who does 3D modeling and rigging for animations, this version of Ian's prosthetic would likely be almost impossible to rig with how mechanically complex it is, even with inverse kinematics. The engineering that he put into his prosthetics is incredible
I would not say it is impossible, however is much more practical to just make the real one.
Besides, 3D model that animate and work for real are quite rare.
Yeah, that's the funny thing, people don't even know that making that thing in 3d, rigging, rendering and compositing it in so seemlessly would likely be even harder than the phisical one, not to take away from this awesome piece of engineering

@@bananasplit566 The funny thing is to make it he's made the whole 3d model for in CAD software I believe, then he had to build and assemble the whole physical thing, constantly tweaking the design to make it so it's hard to say which would be harder. For making a CG model you would have to model and rig it, but then also texture it, do camera tracking (to a rapidly moving and swinging around hand, one that would somehow also need to appear to be inhibited by the model), and compositing to make it match the lighting and the camera.
The fact is they're both insane projects that would take immense but comparable effort, though doing years worth of CG effort just to dupe people (and not flex your CG skills) makes no sense, while years of making a prosthetic hand that matches his unique design and preference criteria and showing it off on the internet does make way more sense.
I have a masters degree in mechanical engineering and let me tell you that this is not just a piece of absolutely aesthetic engineering, no! This is a master class of a piece of usefull art. Absolutely beautfull!

The fact he still has his thumb and part of his hand above the wrist makes a lot of what he is doing possible. The fact his prosthetic works off the hand motion he has left, is genius level wizardry. Would love to see what he could do with a foot.

You made the mechanical movement of your prosthetic so natural and close to a real hand that people mistake it with a fully biological one in disguise, that is a real achievement of artcraftmanship.
And to be fair, when I saw the Mad Max movie, I never considered the "Furiosa's mechanical hand" a CGI one.
The mad max one was really well done because first it aint pure bullshitt fantasy as it does follows the principles of prosthetics in what i could see, the cable and spaulder make me think of a reinervation surgery and electrodes plate wich would mean the hand is a kind of mioelectric and mechanic hybrid. In the vfx side of things it was a glove that sharon whore with most the parts of the hand being actual physical elements and only the stump being faked with a green sleve edited out

It's a great job that you were able to make such a functioning hand. I believe that prosthetics should be actively developed so that even the poor segments of the population have the opportunity to purchase an inexpensive but functioning prosthesis.

you might want to look up "e-Nable hub", or look for a local hub from them =) but they are nowhere near close to his level, they have more basic 3d prints

I've seen you pop up in my feed a few times over the years, but it never ceases to amaze me how you're able to come up with such a complex hand entirely mechanically.
I've worked in a machine shop, and I've also dabbled a bit in CGI, and I can confidently say that, while a skilled team of artists given enough time and money could certainly reproduce a convincing facsimile of your hand in CGI, it would require more far more man hours to make it look that realistic than it would to just build it for real. I mean, designing it in 3D would take the same amount of effort either way. And while I'm sure getting all the parts made and properly fitted is quite challenging, when you make it for real, you don't have to worry about the geometry clipping, or the lighting not matching the environment, or imperfections in the compositing, etc. We should start a campaign to bring this to the attention of the Corridor Crew. They can do a debunking episode on it similar to what they did comparing their fake robot video to real footage from Boston Dynamics. I'd love to see them try to make a CGI hand look as real as yours!
and i work at Microsoft and i've also built robots , and i can confidently say that everything in this video is 101% fake.

You got the most natural and expressive prostetic hand I ever saw. All mechanic, no servo, no battery, extremly fast, it rocks! I wouldn't had believe I would subscribe to a prostetic tinkering channel. But you are up there with the DIY perks and the Electro Booms in the top tier of educational/DIY chanels.
He's really lucky to have a thumb left, because I think he wouldn't be able to build a functional one with a mechanical thumb (not hating him, just pointing it out)

@@Scornfull As wearable device, sure. But as functional prosthetic, not necessarily. Thumb is controlled by muscles in the palm so it should be possible to somehow adhere to those. Outer joint has limited range of motion already. This kind of mechanical device shown in the video wouldn't do of course, as nice a contraption it is.

I saw Violet Evergarden at the beginning and I thought we would be talking about cosplay tips to create a realistic prosthetic prop, or something, but today I learned that people just *cannot* believe this is real, because of how naturally it moves.

Your prosthetic hand looks straight out of a sci-fi movie, which, as a person who rather enjoys sci-fi, I find incredibly awesome, and the fact it functions so well, and can hold a camera better than an actual hand (my hands especially), is even more incredible!
I can't believe anyone would say it's fake. It's probably the most advanced mechanical hand every created, and the skills to pull it off can't be overstated. I've always thought if something happened to one of my limbs I'd have to engineer my own prosthetic, and it's INSANELY COOL that Ian is able to do that for himself.

Do you ever worry about small things getting stuck in between the parts? Like dust, cat hair, dirt, etc?

Probably just uses a good ol air compressor to blast stuff like that out most of the time. Granted im sure he does thoroughly clean it and oil it to keep those chains from wearing out on real maintenance days

I don’t have prosthetics or know anyone that does but when I seen this I had to leave a comment because your design is truly amazing it looks like something out of a sci fi movie I think I commented on one of your videos before a while ago I appreciate you showing off exactly how your hand works at the very least it was very interesting.
I have never clicked "Like" on a video so fast before. The craftmanship alone is astounding, but the ease with which you are able to manipulate that prosthetic is out of this world.
Have you showed that watch attachment before? It's a really cool way to integrating it into the prosthetic hand, not an idea I would've EVER considered!
Caught my attention as well. Although it's been a long time since I've watched a vid of his so i figured I just missed the one where he mighr have included the watch add-on. Nice dial on that as well.
Curious if you’ve considered more or less digits, larger/smaller for different grip abilities? Like 3 large digits for heavy work, or 7 or 8 tiny digits for fine work.

I've been seeing absolute waves of people unable to accept even basic, normal, innocuous aspects of reality. Something about the last several years has pushed a large segment over the edge and people are lost out there. I'm not even in a public role whatsoever but I sometimes reply to comments and vidoes and I've had people accuse me of working for the CIA, of being in the pocket of various wealthy people and organizations, I've seen people questioning every basic, simple thing in the world. Our species' collective psyche is just breaking down.
People unironically think the Earth is flat. It's not a stretch that some believe physical mechanics is some kind of hoax.

I first saw a gif or short vid of your prosthetic quite some time ago, and could make out the basic movement controls, but could not see how well thought out your grip control works. I'm glad to come across this video and be able to put a face to a hand. I recently got into 3D printing limb devices for other people and am glad to see such innovation.
I am truly impressed by this man's perseverance with his disability. He overcomes his trials with such undeniable ingenuity. Props to him!
Best part is that he's been doing this for YEARS! He has a massive history of old designs, you can literally see how he's designed, built, broken, re-designed, tried new ideas, some just for gimmicky fun, others for practicality, built, broken, designed, built, all the way up to his current hand now which is one of his best. All while, y'know, having only one full hand.
Stop this, really, stop this, and go touch grass. people with disabilities have no trials or stuff like that, they have issues in their daily lives that they have to live with. They do nothing to be inspirational to you. If you find them inspirational that's on you.
@@nielsjensen4185 bro, it sounds like you yourself need to touch grass. sounds to me like you have some sort of problem with people being in awe when someone has a difficulty in their life and put in the time and effort to make that one aspect of their life easier. for you to say that people with disabilities don't have any kind of trials to go through in their lives, tells me that you would in some way see someone with a disability as a burden upon society. so, how about instead of being butt-hurt over someone giving the guy credit for his hard work, maybe go live your life?
@@RosieTheProti nothing wrong with feeling awe over an action and when this kind of phrase is used, "He overcomes his trials..." then no matter what's added to it they're feeling subconscious pity for the person.
You should feel empathy for people with disabilities as the world is default designed to cater to the norm which is people without disabilities and you should never feel pity for them. People with disabilities are just people at the end of the day even though they need special requirements to be fulfilled to be able to function in their daily lives on equal terms, or near equal terms, as people without disabilities.
If people started to say that my very own prosthetic hand was cgi, I'd honestly take it as a compliment. Good work man! Absolute masterpiece

No paid subscriptions, no software, no electronics, just couple of metal bars, gears and chains
They really don't. While this is a really ingenious solution that is "low-tech" and therefor accessible, it covers only a small subsection of injuries. I'd argue the smaller one, not that I know the stats, but it just seems likely whatever can take 4 of your fingers can just as easily take your whole palm or forearm. Once you cannot rely on the hand motions is where the current problems in prosthetics are, and where the vast majority of the investments go. And if you actually look at the research, it is searching for unified control systems, that can intergrade at motor plate, axon, and even brain stem level. Current prosthetics can give you individual finger motions and the ability to write again with a missing arm up to the shoulder. I get it, I also like the absolutely metal look of his prostatic, but that is not what you would give to a 10 year old that lost its arm in a car crash.

I remember seeing when you first displayed your initial version of that prosthetic online and was and am still amazed by it.
However, people cannot ever wrap their heads around it.
In the same take they are right in one way but wrong in another.
They are right it’s fake, its not your real flesh and blood hand. What’s not fake is that the mechanics and work you put to making it isn’t fake.
People calling this fake are just jealous they didn't build it just ignore them. This prosthetic is absolutely mind blowing, just amazing.
Jesus christ your progress on this has been insane! I dont know how long ive been following, but i remember you first showing off the mock ups for the basic hand. Keep going man, this is absolutely incredible engineering, not only mechanically- but also the biological knowledge you have understanding how a hand moves

I remember watching you building that prosthetic and it was the coolest thing ever. I wish that people saw the amount of thought and time you put into making not only the final product but every prototype as it was happening, because it feels so much different having seen it than it does just being able to look and know the length it took.
Your hand has always amazed me, I love hearing you talk about it and I love watching its mechanical workings. It is surely a great relic that will outlast us all.

I don’t know how it could be done without something like an x-ray, but I think it would be really interesting to see the physical differences between your forearms and hands now that you have spent so long developing and using the prosthetics.

Making these sorts of more... complicated prosthetics common for the physically impaired would be a huge step for the world!
I think he has documentation on his website, or at the very least he has RUclips videos going over how it's built.
But I do remember him saying the hardest part is actually fitting for the residual limb. The prosthetic needs to designed for the residual. No one will have the exact same size and lever length as he does, so the design will never to accommodate that. Maybe they have a few finger numbs still there, or maybe it's right donlwn to the wrist so the mechanical strength of their wrist action is much weaker.

As a concept designer who works in digital entertainment it's way more believable for this to be practical rather than CGI to me. It would be really mind-boggling if this was CG.

My word, I absolutely love your hands and ingenuity!! I appreciate the Violet Evergarden background, I quite liked the story and of course was fascinated by her prosthetics. I've been brainstorming about a realistic iteration of her arms, but it would (of course) have to rely on some nerve sensing technology to actually function due to a lack of reference muscles (like your splendid design). Ideally it would convert signals to either motors on pulleys or small linear actuators. I really like the idea of using cables and pulleys, but the thumb's an absolute nightmare...
