  • Kangilu is a folk accompanied by religious faith. It is a spiritual and powerful form of dance performed by trained people in Udupi, Karnataka. The dance performance starts with an offering and worshipping the Goddess Durga. The dance is done in a group of 5-12 number of people, who play the same character and wear the same kind of Vesha, i.e., costume. People who love dance would easily make out the difference as it is not pure dancing but mostly an act. For the dance, they wear heavy, colourful dresses and also paint their faces with fascinating colours. Kangilu is performed on the traditional songs, which is called Karungilo at the start and at the end of the performance ‘Aati Kalenge’ is played. Kangilu is performed at the celebration of festivals or at any great occasion. It is believed that it brings peace, harmony and a healthy environment in their clan. Kangilu has its own importance with a legend that says when the wrong was happening on Earth, and the mother of Admaiya had furiously spread horrible diseases. Then people prayed to God to remove the diseases, to which Shri Krishna took the form of Korgajja and destroyed the unrighteousness. This dance is done in this happiness.
