My ancestor was a baker in Rhineland but emigrated to Australia in 1860's. I am only beginning my research into his background and wonder how and where I could look for records relating to his trade and experience in Germany and what made him decide to emigrate.
Hi Denise, the source to start with would be the local church records, they already provide a lot of information about him and his family. Guild records are usually found in the local archives but it might be worth searching the finding aids if the state archives.
