That is why most of these people cheat. Cheating leads to better times, which leads to more prestige, which leads to more exposure, which then leads to direct financial gains as content creators. It's about money. When people ask "why would he do this", the answer is money 99% of the time. occasionally you see people cheating just for the prestige, but most of the time it's money.

Saw this from miles away to be a thing when people started to complain about the RNG nature of getting a close spawn on the monster.
People were already forced to reset runs because they didn't get the perfect spawn, so it immidietely rang alarm bells that people would use cheats to make that the default.
Here we are now, cheaters cheting even more than that and ruining the entire reputation of any speedrunner in the community in the process.

      @Revonlieke Месяц назад +13

@@sabotagefate69 Yes, but there is also a lot of good the modding community does to a game. MHWorld is alive today still partially because of the mods, just like how Skyrim is still a game people go back to and play.
Cheaters will always cheat even when modding is not possible directly. You can look no further than earlier MH games where custom quests were still done and people gave out god talismans to legitimate players through those.
Even if a game completely blocks any modification of game files, cheaters will find a way and it just becomes harder for people to investigate if cheating was at play at that point.

    • @DaShikuXI
      @DaShikuXI Месяц назад +15

@@sabotagefate69 That's why in many cases speedrun communities run votes to decide on which mods are allowed or not. For example in the Windwaker speedrun, runners are allowed to use cheats to skip the very lengthy intro cutscene of the game. This makes resetting for WR attempts a lot more bearable as you're not spending the majority of your time looking at the same cutscene over and over.
Another example is Minecraft runners using a mod to generate multiple worlds at the same time, and then picking one of them to run. This also serves to make resetting less of a time waster.
This only really works though if a game has a close knit community where you can have these sorts of votes, and can hold each other accountable to the results.

@@moonrabbit2334 To ensure that balance, you have to identify for yourself what makes the game worth playing, and then make sure you do not ruin that with mods. For me I really like making a huge variety of builds with all of the different weapons types in the game. I love theory crafting and then putting those theories to the test.
However I first need all of the decorations, materials and money needed to actually test and adjust these builds. Farming these can take forever, especially things like decorations in World which have some brutal rng. I will eventually just cheat those in so I can actually focus on creating builds, which is the main thing I enjoy.
I would never use any mods that ruin the building and theory crafting process of the game, because then i would have nothing left to enjoy. I would gladly use mods that give me easy access to materials however, because grinding materials has no value to me.

Karl Jobst said something in his Dream cheating video something along the lines of "Speed runners don't cheat to get a faster time, they cheat to get a faster time faster". Since a a lot of speed running is so RNG heavy, you are just basically re-rolling the dice each time you do a run, so trying to get a perfect run for hundreds of hours and not getting the perfect roll drives speed runners insane so they just manipulate the RNG to get the perfect run easier. I never been a huge speed runner but that line stuck with me for some reason.
EDIT: Not trying to defend cheaters by any means I love watching these cheaters get caught. But the psychology behind it I was interested in.

personally the only time I used the hp bar mods was when I went to help people with fatalis and extreme behemoth. Many people needed proper call outs and an understanding of thresh holds to preform. and while I could do it from feeling i would find myself subconsciously preparing for an attack without saying anything about it just because it was an innate feeling to me. As far as I'm concerned, cheating takes any accomplishment away from the individual, and has no real benefits outside of them knowing they had to cheat to beat a game and therefor there was no real point in playing it due to satisfaction of success isn't in the equation.
EDIT - That UI mod is ridiculous. If somebody uses that, I wouldn't count any special achievement to be done fairly. "Is it really this bad?"
Given that most of the things we do as a species are in some way tied to status seeking within the group. And, given that social media is built with gamifying the social process as a fundamental component of its design in order to keep people on the site.
    Yes.
This sort of thing is inevitable. Innate tendencies towards status seeking coupled with malicious design meant to prey on our status seeking tendencies means that, so long as nothing changes, you should expect this kind of thing to ramp up until it is no longer physically possible to improve on the cheating methods. It's an arms race. But not between cheaters and non-cheaters.

Honestly, As someone who played monster hunter world, since day 1 of console release (i was 13 at the time and had no PC or access to pc for a few years), originally starting on xbox and then playing on ps4. i had a combined save total of maybe- 10-15? Just due to my enjoyment of the game. Once iceborne dropped i went back to play on xbox for my original save, and beat all the way through fatalis. while having 2 saves on ps4 in iceborne and one of them beating icebornes story.
I got my pc not long after i turned 18, around december 2022. I immediately bought monster hunter world and rise (with it being my least preferred one). Due to me playing through monster hunter world a bunch on console and beating the entire game, i decided it was fine if i used mods to speed up my playthrough on pc, as i was by no means a skilled player. on console my hunts in Master rank, would always be around 15-25 minutes. I got carried away and cheated throughout the entire savefile, which did make the game boring ill admit now ive done everything.
Also i never went online with that save. I always played solo. so i never ruined anyone elses gameplay. (im mostly a single player person anyway :/)
After watching this video, it sparked me to go through all of monster hunter world and iceborne with no mods on my pc, to redeem my cheating ways. For the first video ive seen from you, I really enjoyed it, great video, and ill most likely watch some more of your videos. :)

I remembered when Rise was released on PC there was a debate against certain speedrunners for using mods to bypass talisman melds to their desirable stats. Speedrunning is always about overcoming the rng. The moment when speedrunners decided to justify tampering the files to overcome rng that is built in the game, I lost all my profound respect of their past achievements. There is no point trying to segregate them into "modded categories", because it defeats the spirit of what speedrunning is. Dedicated speedrunners can spend years trying to get their WR on decade-old games such as Tetris, and that game employs sophiscated planning to overcome its rng. I was often baffled how some speedrunners could stagger the monster into permanent downtime, and I'd always wanted to believe that it's achievable. But it's just muddled with doubt.

    • @maxmustermann3938

We had this problem with rise charms too.
Monster Hunter as a game ( not as a competition) is a co-op game and yes, you need to have some good sense in order to use mods with other players as this will impact their experience, not only yours.
What we should not forget is the fact that not everyone have spare time to farm in 2024 since, if you're not rich nor a child/teen you'll have to work/study take care of your family/sleep, and this "git gud" culture inside gaming community is making it even worse. Games should be fun, and with some challenge too, but never a reason to shame someone because they could not beat some dragon at 59"-
Said that, it's obviously sad that someone tried to do this on a competition, cheating is cheating, but that's not a good reason to backlash against the modding community as I see some people in the comments doing.

look at Call of Duty, tons of bullet RNG, damage RNG, manipulation done by the server, lag compensation that doesnt work (it does, exactly how they want it to)

I briefly used the overlay mod when I was grinding crowns in World/Iceborne, because I got tired of trying to stand next to monsters and get accurate measurements, being able to look at the monster's overlay and see if it was a crown or not was so much faster. I still fought all those crown monsters legitimately, and it is the sole reason why a majority of monsters in that game I have 60-100 hunts against, with a few being 100+. When Rise came around, I got it on Switch and didn't have access to those mods, so, I went back to simply measuring the monster with my hunter, and got all the crowns for 100% completion there as well. Every game I pray Capcom gives me an in-game tool that isn't my hunter to measure sizes. Like, let me look at a Monster through the Binoculars and have it tell me the size and if it is considered a Crown Size, even if it doesn't say specifically gold or silver, just say something like 'large crown' or 'small crown' or even just a little emblem next to the measurement saying it's a crown. I'm gonna grind the crowns regardless for that sweet, tasty 100%/Platinum (even though I'm on PC) so ways to speed that up would be nice.
With all that being said, I absolutely do not want those ass overlays on my screen in the game, it is cluttered and detracts from the hunting experience, same as DPS meters which people seem to beg for as well. Why do you need to know who is doing the most damage? The monsters dead, there's no bonus for being the top damage dealer. I'll never understand people trying to make a fun cooperative game into some kind of serious competition.

I agree, if you cheat in a purely single player game I couldn't care less. The problem is when you cheat in a competitive environment or bring cheats to an online game. If you do that you are a grade A, bottom of the barrel LOSER. Many of these players that actually are skilled at the game and cheat anyway, do it because they feel they are owed success. "After all I put in the time to get good, and now I feel that I am owed my world record." It's born out of a mix of frustration and ego. It's terrible when a top player is discovered to be cheating as it ruins the competitive integrity of the game. Hell it's still bad even when terrible shitter players cheat too. It's just usually extremely obvious when they are cheating, because no amount of cheats can hide a lack of game knowledge and potato gameplay. I will never understand cheating in a competitive/online game, because I feel like if I were to cheat it would ruin the game for me. I would have to be constantly looking over my shoulder wondering if I would get caught. Not only that but it would be impossible for me to be satisfied with any of my accomplishments. Because if I had cheated to achieve something, I actually wouldn't have achieved anything at all.

If folks want to play with mods and cheat with other people, there’s a whole Monster Hunter Community Mod that changes the entire game and allows you to play with other folks with the community mod. It limits some Uber mods but most visual and functional mods work with it. Pc only of course. I hope the community mod for World can get its own client for Wilds so folks who want to play with mods/cheats have their own community they can play with and not bring it into crossplay. Or pc multiplayer.
They could even do something similar to how other games with crossplay handle modded files. They could add a check sum integrity filter so if you play with modded files, you can only play with folks that have modded files and restricts you from playing with non-modded players. This would simplify the distinction between playing with others who have/don’t have mods and puts it in the players’ control which type of players they want to play with.

With MH Wilds being Crossplay I wouldnt be surprised if Capcom devellop a tool to check the games files before booting the game and if any changes are made they would block the game to protect the experience. This is very concerning. Ill be playing on PS5 and my partner on PC.....
A good topic of discussion with Juno and the MH community team for a podcast discussion. I wonder how they will try to control it. People were angry at Capcom of trying to control modding and keep the experience as pure as possible for everyone, seem they were proven right in their concern. I dont want my WILD Online experience to be destroyed by those modders....

The thing that killed me with DEVA comments were that on one hand he said that AI manipulation isn't wrong, but on the other hand he knows of other people doing it, but won't "out them". If he honestly believes AI manipulation is nothing wrong, why won't he "out them"? This sort of nonsense does nothing but hurt the Monster Hunter community at large. It's so sad to see people do it, all for Internet Clout Points.

Cheating is getting so bad now, it's in pretty much everything. PC prominence in cross-play has really ruined everything, I can't trust a player on PC is playing legitimately. You can still cheat on consoles but that is an even smaller group of players that if they really wanted to cheat are absolutely moronic and would find a better way to do it on a PC.

And I was like Ah na dude, you're delusional, how could anyone cheat. It was the Bloodbath Diablos EX quest - my friend stayed back at start I know he was waiting for the "I told you so". Long story short before I even got to the other player Blood Bath Diablos EX was done and over. It wasn't even a minute. Once we got back to hub he simply said "I don't support cheaters" and kicked the other player. It was explained how he did it but it's been some time I have long forgotten. It still feels bad to have even agree to go on that quest because that defeated the whole purpose of the game.

I think that to combat this the MH community should make a tool to verify an unmodded game, and add a "set pattern" category for those who don't want to deal with RNG. They can either vote on a pattern, or have the runners try to fully optimize for the best pattern on each weapon, and include their chosen pattern with the run submission.
For the main categories, require that the runner submit a full session that starts with some process that can certify that the game is unmodded, and they must include all of their attempts from that session, and provide additional sessions at request for probabilistic analysis.

Rurikhan might not know this, but for PC MonHun speedrunning, mods like fixed spawn area, guaranteed drunk bird, fixed monster sizes, guaranteed minimal hp pool, etc. are all assumed and considered "standard" if you want to be competitive and optimal. There are even some insanely niche mods that you can get such as fixing the specific endemic life spawns from specific bushes, or fixing the element of the Starburst Bugs for Sunbreak. Obviously most speedrunners will put their modlist in the video description but there's no way to know if there's anything else they chose to not publicize.
It is not a great feeling when you have to tell someone who wants to get a competitive time in PC MH speedrunning to download a modpack before trying for real, but sadly these mods are quite literally undetectable on video so it'd be extremely hard to regulate them out of the scene. Unless we can somehow make streaming the speedrun attempts mandatory so that one could catch the cheaters using statistics like how they caught Dream, there's simply not a viable way to stop speedrunners from using these mods.
Nobody made a big fuss about the mods I listed above being widely used because they are generally considered "Starting Conditions" and they are not fun to reset for (as deemed by the speedrun community). The real issue is the behavior mods in Karl and Juzzi's video because they are against the fundamental monster hunter gameplay.

I think the most important thing here especially after reading your comment. It's transparency. I think there legit wouldn't be any issues with these cheating runs if they didn't hide anything.
Modded runs in games can actually be fun. Heck while an extreme example look at the randomizer runs people do all the time. But you just have to be transparent.
I think having some mods to make it so someone doesn't waste hours restarting to just get the right start is a QOL but still most be mentioned.

The DPS meters help figure out who is the cheater, some are blatant some hide it, but those players with -42 defense and all the Qurious skills added onto it, don't even try to hide it and it gets annoying when everyone just has every offensive armor skill in the game doing absurd damage

    And it worked!
I got this video in my recommendations and decided to have a watch.
I am one of the guys that chastised his behavior in the comment section of juzzi, there, Angbata defended him, and the use of TA, which I later left a comment refuting the arguments. I managed to play 1 or 2 runs with Deva at the time, and seemed a decent dude.
I was very wrong. In juzzi's video, there are receipts of him mistreaing console players, inflating himself as the best player in the world, and even being racist to others (other péople in the comment section came out and confirmed these). After the video was posted, he left a comment, pseudo apologizing for it.
And you would think: will he redeem or double down?
    NO, HE QUADRUPLED DOWN.
He edited the comment, retracting his apology, stating he was "gaslighted" into believing he did something wrong, threatened legal action against juzzi, and stated he will not go anywhere.
In an undisclosed amount weeks later, he deleted the comment. BUT, due to coincidence and happenstance, I managed to save a screenshot.
I used him as a reference for builds, since my younger brother is a CB main, and I am not (HH, Lance user), so I told him to subscribe. When this happened, I sent him the screenshot, saved it in a WA group I use to dump shit; he unsubbed, and that is it. I formatted my PC and lost the screenshot.
HOWEVER, when Karl's vid came out, I searched everywhere, and he still had it AND the WA group saved it. So I uploaded it in imgur and shared it on reddit. Whoever is interested in seeing the snip, I can share it.
And about the mods, I am one of the radicalists that is against EVERY single mod. Why? Because when you permit one, the threshold of tolerance lowers and lowers, and then this happens. I even tolerated costume mods, and even wanted to delve into modding, so I could do a Sauron costume with weapon included, but then decided not to and used the ingame layered armors (I even made runs with it, ofc not competitive).
Personally, idc if you increased the rng for decos .12%, or increased your monster drops by 1, or want to see the monster's HP because "I want to be better when fighting it. You are a disgusting cheater, no more, no less.
Like I said in my reply to Bata's response to juzzi:
_As Karl Jobst said in the The Biggest Cheater In Guitar Hero History Was Finally Caught "Cheaters are thieves, stealing time, stealing energy, stealing fame and stealing dreams from everyone else"_

The problem here is that there is no way for us (the disgruntled and would-be reporters of such cheats) have no way of concretely reporting that indeed someone at some point in the hunt, or it's entirety is cheating.
Correct me if I'm wrong but i think we have a way to mitigate this by just sticking to our playgroups. I mean, world/iceborne came out before and well into the pandemic. My crew and I experienced our fair share of these "Cheaters" or "Mod users" and basically we just stopped playing pubs. We just sticked to the group, had a blast all the way to the end of content.
Realistically speaking, these cheaters rob us of the fun we're having from the novel experiences we get from the shenanigans we do with the monsters (AI), that said, i don't think capcom will address this since it does not directly affect them, and other than the denial of "fun", there is also no detriment to the playerbase, well not enough to warrant the addressing of this problem altogether.

The sad part is, some players defend them saying "it's not a PvP game," and that it helps them more than it hurts... but the joy of monster hunter is fighting a godlike monster and savoring the hard earned victory... cheating weapons and armors in just to make it easier robs people of that. Sometimes these same people are the ones who complain the game is easy or get boring fast...

With Japanese games it's actually both. Japan takes cheating seriously (Notice how many players get caught with hacked pokemon in Japan vs competitions elsewhere). They also have strong ideas about how people should play the games - see the latest Animal Crossing, instance.
Also - anti-cheat is a lot more than DRM.

    • @Rexhunterj
      @Rexhunterj Месяц назад

@@waltlock8805 Anti cheat is not DRM, whoever told you that is a fool.
As a programmer, DRM is Digital Rights Management. It's all in the name of that acronym, your rights are restricted based on the companies whims. They say DRM is to stop bad things happening to the consumer but the truth is, DRM is just there to manipulate you into thinking you are safe.
Anti Cheat costs MILLIONS to develop and the one-stop-shop solutions of Battle Eye and Easy Anti Cheat do not work properly, if at all. Only custom anti-cheat solutions actually work and so far there are few companies who have made real anti-cheats>
The next big issue now is that most anti-cheats are ring-0 kernel, meaning they have access to your entire machine's root system down to the EFI drives your OS installed, this is extremely bad for security (for you as an end-user) as it means if that ring-0 kernel anti-cheat is ever maliciously hacked like say... the XZ library attack on Linux that means MILLIONS of customers data is no longer safe, all because a company forced you to install ring-0 crap on your computer, to play a damn video game.
DRM lowers performance of video games drastically, also chews internet bandwidth when it pings the master server.
AC lowers performance on clients and makes them vulnerable to kernel intrusion.

I vastly prefer co-op games over competitive ones, and it's astonishing just how many people are willing to cheat in a non-competitive environment. Thankfully I have only encountered a cheater *once* while playing MH:World. About 98% of my experience playing co-op games online has been positive, even with randoms, but that just makes the 2% really stand out.
Your assessment that people are doing this for social media points is only part of the story. These people are likely making money off of these supposedly legitimate gameplay videos, which makes this whole situation that much worse. What a way to bring the entire community down because someone is just that selfish. There's also another subset of people who either cheat to mess with people while playing online, or mess with people while playing online and then potentially making videos or posts along the lines of "haha we screwed with this guy's game and they got angry about it" or similar.
I don't run a youtube channel (though I've contemplated it) but I can understand what you're talking about with the likes and views and all that crap. All that is is a number that goes up. Actual interaction (such as comments) would be much more valuable to me, at least up to a point. But you know, some people are just completely obsessed with those numbers. It's a great way to make you feel a sense of pride and accomplishment (without even needing to spend money on loot boxes).

One thing that I think people should know is that modding and altering RNG is actually extremely common and accepted in the MH speedrunning community as long as you do it right. At the end of the video Ruri said something about modding the game to make sure the monster is always the lowest possible health, lots of runners do that or something similar like guaranteeing a specific spawn location or 100% food skill chance.
Stuff like this isn’t cheating because it takes place outside of the run, eating for food skills, the monsters spawning, anything like that occurs before the timer starts. So modding these things just wastes less of the speedrunners IRL time without affecting the actual run. If they didn’t mod for a specific spawn location all that means is they would immediately abandon every quest where it didn’t spawn in the right place.
On the other hand what Deva and the other runners in Karl’s video did is ABSOLUTELY cheating. Not only does it affect the RNG in the run itself but it allows the monster to do things it literally can’t do otherwise.
