Thanks to the Shenandoah Valley Beekeepers Association for posting Michael's talks. I learn new things every time I hear him... and now don't feel so down on the Honey Flow gadget!

Great to see Mr. Bush on YT! He inspired me to build my first TBH several years ago and I find his site my go to place for anything bee.

I have a top bar barrel hive. I built it. I bought a Langsroth (sp) nuc. What I did to have the frames fit, was to build up the sides of the hive giving 4 in, more of hight so the frames fit. I didn't have to disturb the bee's to much. My hive is prospering! I have many bee's going in and out hopefully; I'll be splitting it soon! Oh yeah I have a smoker too! :) Very interesting talk! Thank you!
    Kathy in Ohio.
P.S. I haven't taken any comb or honey out yet. Just bur comb but when I do I'll not take to much. I plan on returning the comb back to the hive. Bee Happy! :)

The smoke merely hides the distress pheromones and this is why the bees are calmer when you use it.

Very informative. Thanks for the upload. I took a look at a beehive here in Korea, and I noticed right away how small the honeybees are. Now I'm wondering just what is a natural size for a honeybee!

Such a big entrance, how do they protect it all of that from wasps and robbers? Each hive stressor adds up, just like in humans

I've never had a hive of any kind, but I'm in the barn building a few top bar hives this week.
Let's say I misjudged how many honey filled combs I removed from the hive.
But, instead of harvesting the honey from the comb, I stored the bar, comb and all, in the freezer.
Could I take some of these frozen combs and put them back in the hive to make up for my miscalculation?

On Top Bar Hives.. would a top bar with two vertical supports with a 3/8 in. spacing from the sides work? (no bottom bar, or maybe a bottom bar/support) hmmmm.. must try it I spose.

+charles dilmore What describe is a framed hive! Yes, it will work, but why? You need to maintain bee-space which means you need to be a good woodworker. Charm of a top-bar is no small tolerances needed in the build.

thanks for the upload bit annoying that so much of it not was focused on the screen when he was describing what was on it.

very awsume! Thanks for all the free advise. Newbee here. One question if I may? Why is all your hives on the ground? I going with top bars on legs for my back related issues but I was just wondering.
Other note, I'm a plastics engineer, anyone have interest in developing something different than the flow hive, but same type of out come & possible more bee friendly?

Bees don't like plastic, they even prefer to make their combs without wax foundation. We made a polystyrene top bar with wood bars just to test it, will put the bees in when the weather allows it.

Enjoyed the series of videos. However, I found it extremely annoying when people frequently wandered in front of the camera. Surely, there is some other way for them to walk that doesn't distract from the speaker or the message.

People these days don't have much respect for each other, the priority should be to listen to the person speaking not to answer phone calls or whatever. Also going to the bathroom, drink water or eating should be done before the talk starts.

This is at a semi-informal bee club talk that has refreshments at the front of the room. I don' think the club designed the talk formal enough for anyone to care about people walking in front of the speaker...
