    My annoyance with the Erd Tree nom is that I absolutely believe there should be a DLC category, and Erd Tree should absolutely be winning it this year. Judging all DLC as games ensures DLC will never get the recognition they deserve.

    • @smeghead250
      @smeghead250 2 дня назад +2

      If Erd Tree was standalone, I'd be fine with it. It would be judged as its own product.
      But Erd Tree is propped up by an entire 2022 game covering for any flaws that may have been apparent had it been standalone.

    • @reed1645
      @reed1645 2 дня назад +1

      It'd be a pointless category. You get at most one noteworthy expansion a year.

      Everyone on the internet says “DLC should be in its own category” - what else would go in there? I mean, there’s maybe 1 dlc a year that is impressive enough to earn an award. MAYBE one

    • @smeghead250
      @smeghead250 День назад +1

      Just to name the biggest ones, and definitely not the only ones deserving of recognition: 2022 we would have had Cuphead's Last Course, Forza's awesome Hot Wheels expansion, and MH Sunbreak. 2023 had Phantom Liberty, Xenoblade, Burning Shores. This year would have been Erd Tree, Vessel of Hatred, Final Shape and Lake House.
      There's plenty DLC each year to justify a category, especially over some of the other categories.

    • @reed1645
      @reed1645 День назад

      @smeghead250 in other words 2022 had nothing, 2023 had phantom liberty and 2024 had shadow of the erdtree.
      There is dlc every year. There's rarely dlc that generates any discussion. Sure you could create a pointless category in which the winner will be blindingly obvious but that's not really solving anything.

    @beargrub8932 День назад +2

    having to play x hours of a game to even be able to get to the dlc in the first place should be reason enough for the dlc not to be eligible for goty.
    like you simply cannot play shadow of the erdtree without owning and playing elden ring first, so erdtree is not equal to a stand alone game, no matter the size or quality of it.
    give it its own dlc category or even straight up an honorary award or something idc but it’s not fair to the other nominees.

  • @ChristianFeliciano7
    @ChristianFeliciano7 2 дня назад +2

    I think the closest comparison for Erdtree's situation in another medium would be Dune 2 winning Best Picture, then two years later releasing a director's cut that has an extra 90 minutes of movie, and that version being nominated for Best Picture. In both examples the new content is as long or "complete" as a standalone installment, but cannot be experienced outside the original product.

  • @TAHK0
    @TAHK0 2 дня назад +21

    I think more weird situations and outliers will keep popping up as the industry attempts solutions to AAA bloat (erdtree, sonic x shadow, bowser's fury, mario kart 8 deluxe, etc), so I really like the side note about this whole process being imperfect and essentially new territory. It'll be cool to see how this all evolves in the future.

      With all due respect, DLC/expansions are truly nothing new. There's nothing unique about Shadow Of The Erdtree's business model that wasn't true 10 or so years ago.
      Throwing a different game in with a remaster also isn't the same as Shadow Of The Erdtree which is more akin to a traditional expansion like The Witcher 3: Blood & Wine.
      You cannot play Erdtree without dozens of hours in the base game. They're inseparable. They're the same game.

  • @arthurclark14

    A note on Haley’s comment about situations like SotE not happening at other awards shows-OJ: Made in America was released in episodes by ESPN but was nominated and won Best Documentary Feature at the Oscar’s. It was a bit controversial at the time and I believe the eligibility rules have since changed.

  • @melephs_cap
    @melephs_cap 2 дня назад +34

    As someone who only played Shadow of the Erdtree among all the GOTY candidates (and liked it), I wouldn't have nominated it if it'd been up to me. It kinda feels like nepotism. Elden Ring already won GOTY, and most people at launch agreed the DLC is "more Elden Ring" with a few shifts in design principles. Maybe more importantly, I don't want to call something Game of the Year if it's not a standalone product.

    • @Nekomania
      @Nekomania 2 дня назад +3

      yes exactly like if someone new to elden ring wanted to try it out they should have to play 40-60 hours of the base game just to unlock the dlc. If it was just it's own thing in the world of elden ring sure nominate it for goty, but the fact that this took a spot from something like say yakuza 8, prince of perisa, etc is pretty lame imho.

  • @toastyginger1059
    @toastyginger1059 2 дня назад +6

    It is a difficult discussion because, yes, Erdtree is phenomenal and deserves recognition, but there should have been a category already for expansions and dlc.
    It now feels like all the other games listed are overshadowed by previous GOTY Elden Ring.
    The nomination plays into the stereotype that the gaming press will do anything to prevent other genres such as card games, platformers, or (more traditional story focused) jrpgs from winning. Whether there is any truth to that, the more popular genre of action-rpg has won the game of the year at the TGA's more than any other genre.
    I think for a lot of people, they felt this year was the chance for a more overlooked thing they love could be recognised, and the Erdtree tree nomination kills that, hence the outrage.

    You'd think they'd have added a DLC/Expansion category at this point since this has come up before. TW3 Blood and Wine won Best RPG in 2016, SF5: Arcade Edition got nominated for Best Fighting Game in 2018, MHW: Iceborne was nominated for Best RPG in 2019, Persona 5 Royal got nominated for Best RPG in 2020 after P5 won in 2017, etc. Given the rules as they are it makes sense, but I would rather have some other games in the GOTY or RPG slots over Erdtree (and maybe Game Direction and Art Direction). The bigger problem I saw was Multiversus getting nominated for Best Fighting Game AGAIN (it won in 2022) I assume because it was "rereleased" this year for no reason. That sets a HORRIBLE precedence for other games, not to mention obvious choices existed to fill its slot.

    They’ve been doing goty for 10 years now. Only two were my personal picks (the Witcher 3 and botw) and two were high on my list (tlou part 2 and GoW). I just know I’ll almost always disagree with the goty pick. Heck, baldurs gate wasn’t even in my top 10 for 2023.
    Erdtree will win and I’ll complain cause dlc should not count. Especially when the base game already won goty. It’s not like the game wasn’t already recognized…

    so a great VR game can't be nominated (Batman) for the best game of the year, but DLC can? This is insulting to the creators, I work in VR games myself and I know how much work has to be put into them, the average person does not realize how much work it costs to optimize all scenes and models so that such old meta quest 2 play 90 frames per second - because yes, that's how many frames it has to be displayed on headset so that people don't get nauseous, the lack of appreciation for such creators is a sad thing

    • @caphine244
      @caphine244 День назад

      I think a big reason, why we have yet to see a VR-game as a GotY nomination, is because for a large majority of players VR simply isn't part of their gaming experience. The medium is still held back by the money and available space required to play. It's a tough argument to make that a game, few people even had the ability to play, should be nominated ☁️

    • @padmoch2207
      @padmoch2207 День назад

      @caphine244 fair point, this means that the "best game of the year" is more of a popularity plebiscite than an actual indication of the best gaming experience of The year, whether known to a wide audience or not. It's a pity, because such exclusion further deepens the isolation of the VR market, which has a lot to offer but no one knows about it (in terms of price, headsets are more and more affordable, some much cheaper than PS5 pro)

    Why discredit Shadow of the Erd Tree... because it WASN'T.... Elden Ring already won game of the year. SotE is part of Elden Ring. You can't play it without having played ER... literally, you have to have completed a very large chunk of ER to even be able to start it. How to put this... this is a gated expansion. This is not a GAME. Don't get me wrong... Elden Ring is one of the best games of all time. But I don't see the sense in trying to make DLC a game in it's own right.
    Edit - I think this is indicative of how games media doesn't reflect gamers now... I don't know any gamers that would call this a game in it's own right. Gamers WANT new games to be celebrated. I normally don’t care about game of the year or the awards but I was so excited for Rebirth. It felt like it had a high chance to win GOTY.. and then they change the rules to suck up to FromSoft. I hope Rebirth wins but it definitely feels unfair and feels like they’re catering to FromSoft. Elden Ring already won GOTY, so it’s extra unfair to change the rules for Erdtree. And to be honest, Erdtree was great but it was just more Elden Ring.. they gave us a few new weapons and abilities but it wasn’t like completely revolutionary. This game is 30 hours on an average playthrough which is what MOST of us play under. It’s all NEW content. For the people who are wondering why if it’s the same game? If this came out as a different title and not DLC. People would be clamoring for it to be GOTY in the exact same manor but with less backlash.. it’s a very good DLC that is worthy of GOTY talks. Maybe not to win; even though it’s mine; but VERY much in the conversation. It’s a magnificent addition and basically half the size of an already large game that most people can’t get through the base

    I'm going to say something extremely controversial, but neiter DLCs nor Remakes should be GOTY contenders. DLC is not a game, it's a piece of game, it's a new content, but not a new game. Remakes ride on the success of the original, nothing story, lore and character wise is new there, it wasn't created from scratch, it's an update of something old. Instead of Rebirth and Erdtree there should be Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth and Dragon's Dogma 2.

    Elden Ring DLC? Are you crazy Geoff

      Slight clarification: Geoff didn't pick Elden Ring DLC as a nominee. That was the 135 or so games media outlets that make up the voting jury.

      @brandonwoodward9515 Geoff allowed it, and therefore shall pay for his crimes

      @ronsil6815 Lol. Fair point. I just wanted to clarify he didn't put it there.

    Minnmax can be so condescending. It's nauseating.
    If 99% of the people online disagree with Elden Ring DLC being nominated for GOTY, maybe it's not wise to be dismissive of the general consensus as people "always being angry" and "needing to calm down."
    This is why I stopped putting any stock into the opinions on this channel. Ben especially is all about trying to brush past any constructive criticism of anything for fear of sounding negative, which to me is a disservice to the gaming community at large. Without criticism, improvements cannot be made. Why be so dismissive of the DLC GOTY concerns? It boggles me.

    Does anyone really care about the game awards? It's literally all that is wrong with the games industry, and only detracts from the medium I love. Don't support the game awards, think for yourself!

    Good video. A-. Would have been higher if Ben didn't keep leaning in to his mic whispering, "oh, you like that (erdree qualities for GoTY nomination), don't you"?
    I'm here for the content but not all of it is PG appropriate for the subway unfortunately.

    If an expansion has the chops to win the most prestigious gaming award then let it roll man. Getting caught up in semantics is so lame.

    GotY is a dumb concept i simply dont agree with. My favorite games of the year are almost never new releases, its always a game thats from a previous year usually. I also play with my GF a lot and we play old stuff that's usually more enjoyable than anything current.
    Sad that GotY is more important to these people than just enjoying a good game. But yal need views, and i guess its fun to pick a game and champion it, so i get it, even if i think its juvenile and taints what i love about video games.

    I'm going to give what could be possibly an unpopular opinion I understand Eldon ring conversation however you could technically say the same thing about Final Fantasy it's just one big game that they couldn't finish in one go so essentially it's similar to Eldon rings DLC if you think about it because Elgin ring with the DLC was huge felt like a completely another game just my opinion I'm more upset that Stellar Blade didn't make it into the game of year nomination.
