Carol O'Connor and Sherman Hemsley were comedic genius together. Add in the supporting cast and All in the Family and The Jeffersons were brilliant shows. There is an episode of the Jeffersons when George meets Lionel's Fiance, it is one of the best with George and Archie. The Jeffersons was such a good show too. You will love George and Florence's arguments. I always felt the Show Martin was a copy of the Jeffersons. I really wish you could watch these whole shows in order. It was a great time for TV when people didn't get offended at everything.
Those were the best seasons, when the Jeffersons were their neighbor. The wives loved each other, and the husbands were just the opposite. Perfect setup for humor.
Back in the day when someone insulted you, you didn't cry, you just tried to one-up him. Even friends threw insults that would make your hair curl. Now, our PC world has gotten to the point that people are crying over things that would never have been considered an insult back then.
You kidding? That's how I know who my TRUE friends are! One drops an insult(and the key is, it's not intended to hurt them, and they KNOW it) on the other.... then the other comes back with something worse.... and it goes back and forth until both/all of you are laughing your asses off.
This Art of Friendship throughout History. Meet. Insult each other. Fight. Become lifelong friends. And then the Commies started giving EVERYONE prizes just for breathing.
In real life all of these people absolutely loved each other. None really felt this way. You have to see when Archie meets Sammy Davis, Jr.! So funny! Loved Sammy!!!
Loved one when Archie thought that God was a black man locked himself in basement and finally had a black neighbor let him out and thought that was God!
The back and forth between these two was awesome! We watched All in the Family and the Jeffersons. My dad was laughing hard at both shows. People didn't get their feelings hurt so easily back in the day and understand the message and the humor. Archie and George both grew as people over the years and closed the gap between people and now we have butt hurt people running around crying about everything.
This was a time before corporations were bought out and the new owners (facists) put the yuri bezminov plan into action. Devide a conqueror. Think, if we were allowed to continue on bunkers course that there would not have been melanin prejudice except in the history books. We will be there soon WWG1WGA WORLDWIDE
I still say Sanford and son is the funniest of them all... Loved Red Fox..... all though a lot of it went over my head back then. And he was always making fun of everyone... especially old white women and now I am one lol... But its still funny
Young americans will never know what we have lost. The actors and comedians of All in the Family and the Jeffersons were brilliant. Perfect casting. What lost treasures for sure.
I think this shows we are all more alike then we would admit. Archie and George both had good hearts and sometimes misguided judgements but they both ended up liking each other and especially each other's families. This show should be shown more now than ever to help people see the similarities, instead of the differences in all people.
im an older guy i grew up watching both of these talented groups of people plus sanford and son and many others i enjoyed them because they knew how to teach joke and have fun with everyone at the same time. it was just folks being folks and i wish we had a bit more of that in our lives right now. keep being you man.
Carroll O’Connor also starred in “In The Heat of the Night (TV series) playing a completely different personality. He did a great job on both shows imo 😊
As the story goes, the producers (wisely) wanted Sherman Hemsley to play the part of George from the very start . However he was not immediately available and waited for Sherman to became available before expanding the character of George.
Archie and George were the best! This was a time when people laughed and didn’t get their panties in a wad when a joke was made, we knew growing up it was acting and the words used on TV were meant for laughs and not mean spirited, todays cupcakes get their feelings hurt when you joke with them, there will never be another Archie Bunker and George Jefferson!
These two shows were hilarious! People today are too up in their feelings to just find the humor and the message in what was being said! Miss this kind of comedy
I grew up with Archie and laughed I learned to be kinder and loving. The show did bring morals through all the sorrows and jokes I learned to love more. At a young age, I learned how the world can be hard and the struggles are real.
In one of Carroll O'Connor's last roles, he played the guardian of Minnie Driver's character (grandfather, I believe). She gets a heart transplant and falls in love with the donor's widow (neither knew it at the time). He was so poignant and lovely in that film. It's a tear jerker called "Return to Me" and it's one of my favorite films. Carroll's career was so long and successful. He was a true gem among men.
Growing up having watched both and being a fan of All In The Family and The Jefferson's taught me how stupid it is to be a bigot. I'm happy to see you watching and understanding the real message behind these shows. Both shows were ground breaking and Norman Lear was a genius. Also Rob Reiner aka Meathead the son in law is in life the son of Hollywood powerhouse Carl Reiner and has gone onto be a force himself in Hollywood.
This show resonates today and should be watched by newer generations. Archie was a conservative and Meathead was a liberal and their back and forth is classic
Thank you for reacting to this and for your words on this type of comedy in the context of the times. Some people don't understand that this was how it was back in the day. Comedy is comedy and should just be enjoyed for what it is. A smile or giggle doesn't make anyone racist. Comedy has no color ! Thanks
Wow I'm 57 and watched this show in Toronto before I was a teenager. Truly a ground breaking show for its time. The context and therefore the meaning would not be obvious to many kids today. Love for you for watching it with a sense of humour,, It's pretty cool to have a hero that although is worthy of being hated, but at the same time is so real, so vulnerable and confused one can feel for the guy... Archie's Struggle and the struggle of all the characters is worthy of understanding.
I loved watching The Jeffersons when I was young. George was always, always so funny. I do remember reading somewhere that Sherman Hemsley never liked saying the word Honky. Somewhere after season two or three of The Jeffersons he refused to say it anymore in the show.
Meathead is indeed his son-in-law, and their banter back & forth was phenomenal. Norman Lear was an absolute genius, he was the writer and producer of All In The Family, Sanford & Son, The Jefferson’s, Maude, One Day At A Time and Good Times. He was a HUGE part of my childhood and so a big influence on my life. His messages weren’t lost on me. He made shows I could relate to, we could all relate to, in one way or another. He tried his best to bridge the deep racial and economical divides that existed at that time, allowing us a peek into the homes of people that were kinda familiar to us but also unfamiliar to us but who we wanted to know more about. His characters were believable and endearing, even if some were ornery and cranky. Personalizing people in our neighborhoods allowed us all a little bit more understanding, not excuses for terrible people of ignorant beliefs, but a better understanding of those people we live and work with everyday. Personalizing the unknown (whether it be race or poverty or blue collar workers or civil rights fights) for people allows them to drop their stereotypical beliefs, gain a bit of a truer understanding and to really see each other as human beings, not just some nameless faceless dregs on society. He brought characters to life we could all relate to in some small way, and at a pivotal time we really needed to try to relate to one another. It’s funny, I grew up in poor & in the NYC projects and as white as I am, I related the most with Good Times. That family dynamic, their bond with each other and their friends & neighbors, they way they struggled, the danger they felt in their neighborhood, the terrible & often dangerous living conditions of their apartment building and the poor treatment from the landlord being a city building, (although we had better maintenance men LOL), but THAT was my life, just as a white person. Norman Lear tried to give us an olive branch, a rope where there was space for each of us to grab hold of and unify our strength to pull us out of the inhumanity of the decades earlier, together. I just wish people had longer memories than they seem to have today. It seems the messages that were his life’s work is lost on too many today. Some people today celebrate Bunkers small minded cruelty instead of seeing him for what he was, what Norman Lear wrote him as: a fearful old man who felt small and insignificant in his life so he covered it with a lot of nonsensical blustery bullshit.
This answer is perfection! I too grew up in the 70’s with those groundbreaking TV shows that challenged people’s perceptions. Dont forget the Waltons, which was another Norman Lear genius production.
I applaud your words about Good Times. While there was questionable acting by a few cast members. The premise of the show was such everyone could relate to it. The show wasn't anything poverty as many think. It was about strong parents running a tight ship that was loving at the same time. James Evans is my favorite TV dad. He was rock. The episode of JJ hired to paint a mural in a bank and the bank president tried to stiff him was James at his best. I think the second best James was when he took the disrespectful punk into the bedroom and gave a good "whooping". James was a man for all situations. Strong, brave, demanding and yet still showed pride and love for his family. America can use more James Evans today.
LOVE THESE MY MAN! And you do a great job bringing it. People so damn sensitive these daze it's cool to see it when folks just chill and take comedy for what it is. I love that old school comedy the most because it wasn't scared to bring it.
You, my friend are my favorite to watch!! I'm so sick of all the offended people on RUclips.... we all laughed with each other, not at each other. I wish we had more of this kinda back and forth comedy today. I grew up watching this!!! Made people realize that we aren't that different, we can all smile and laugh. Seems like today all we do together is hate. Sadness. Much love from Texas ❤🤍💙
Literally crying. 😂 I loved that last line, a great parting shot. 😆 Sherman Hemsley was a great comedian in his own right. I kind of love how well he carried himself, playing an arrogant, snooty black man at the time, that was something. It wasn't something that was represented in the media before, much less as a positive thing. He was just so good at delivering those one-line disses, people loved him.
There was an episode where Mike and Archie are locked in a basement overnight and Archie relays a story about his "colored friend" from his childhood. Great episode that shows more of his humanity and how it was formed.
I'm a first time watcher and I totally enjoyed this video. I'm 75 and lived in those times. There were many Archie Bunkers all around. There were many George Jefferson's around too. Archie's way of thinking was the norm back then and there were people like the Jefferson's that read him like a book. Unfortunately there are still a few like them in today's world. This show is so much more enjoyable today than it was before. To look back in time and see how far we've become, or have we. There will always be hate in the world no matter what. That's so sad to have to say that. But shows like this must be shown today so we learn not to become like them . It gives us a better understanding of each other and that's a good thing. I look back in my life and remember while I was in the Air Force back in the 60's I was stationed in Columbus Mississippi . WOW I couldn't believe my eyes. How wrong were we humans behaving the way we did back then . So this show and many more of them 60's T.V. shows are basically how it really was back then. I enjoyed this video Thanks !😊
As a child I watched All in the Family and was caught up in the stories. Now I would be fascinated to know how Carroll and Sherman maintained their dialogue without losing it. How did the whole cast maintain composure?
I grew up watching and loving both shows. All in the Family was a very cleverly written show and Caroll O'Connor did an awesome job playing this character. Although he was often mentioned, this was the first time anyone actually saw George. Lionel first appeared much earlier, I think on the first or second episode. But it was very interesting to see how the characters grew and changed over the course of the shows.
I would give anything to see these comedy shows to return but politics has killed it over racial b.s.....we laughed alot with each other like this. It was greatest times ever. Great shows All in the Family, The Jeffersons and Sanford and Sons. They poked fun at everyone. We were not offended by the call out names. It was just all in good fun. This is why us Genxers and Boomers get so frustrated these days because of what the younger bunch is being fed all this crap about racism and making a problem that was not even close for a very long time. Glad you guys are looking back in time and starting to see and better understand where we came from. Life was hard then of course but fun, loving even when poking fun at one another. Comedy was great! Glad you enjoyed this. Keep watching them..😂😂😂😂

This is great, these were shows from my day, and back then we all thought both Jefferson's and All In The Family were hilarious! For the baby boomers being called a honky is no big deal, just par for the course!
Carroll O'Connor received death threats for this character. Then, he also got threats for 'In the Heat of the Night ' as well. You either loved him, or you hated him!!! Either way, tough on him. Sometimes it's hard when an actor portrays a character and you forget that their just 'Acting'. That's what they get paid to do.

Some people were offended by this show but most people understood that the intention was to bring the many issues of the day to light where they could be talked about and examined. I'm so glad that you understand the shows purpose and can laugh at its humor. Peace.
I might add that Archie was a bigot who didn’t think he was a bigot - that’s where the education comes in.
@@Random-ed2xf - yes, but there's a distinction between them and those who are knowingly racist. They are very aware of it, and they aren't afraid to let others know.
@@Random-ed2xf - Yes, I think Archie would have been the first to say that racism was bad, because he didn’t think he was. He was racist in many ways, but he wouldn’t have gone out to burn crosses on peoples lawns.
Well said. Archie was never "allowed" to really get away with his bigotry. As a kid, it was such a learning experience for me.
As in this very clip. Archie didn't even realize that Henry insulted him.😂
I remember when a Puerto Rican family moved into the neighborhood. George and Archie both went nuts. Hilarious satire
I always watched All In The Family and The Jefferson’s.They were great shows! Great comedy..all in fun. Back then people could joke around with other and not get offended,.We didn’t laugh at each other..we laughed with each other. The guy you were asking about is Archie’s son in law..Archie calls him meathead. Archie didn’t discriminate..he had a name for everybody. Thanks Van for sharing and bringing back good ole comedy.
And Blazing Saddles,
Carol O'Connor and Sherman Hemsley were comedic genius together.
Now we can’t even go there. People are too sensitive
Mother Jefferson was my favorite character.
I could see that with Martin always throwing everyone out....but I leaned more towards honeymooners 🤷🏾♀️
Those were the best seasons, when the Jeffersons were their neighbor. The wives loved each other, and the husbands were just the opposite. Perfect setup for humor.
They were the Abbott and Costello of the hood
Back in the day when someone insulted you, you didn't cry, you just tried to one-up him. Even friends threw insults that would make your hair curl. Now, our PC world has gotten to the point that people are crying over things that would never have been considered an insult back then.
You kidding? That's how I know who my TRUE friends are! One drops an insult(and the key is, it's not intended to hurt them, and they KNOW it) on the other.... then the other comes back with something worse.... and it goes back and forth until both/all of you are laughing your asses off.
I second that! i was a white kid growing up in a black neighborhood in the 60's and 70's. Would not trade that experience for nothing!!!!
Like calling something with a heartbeat alive.
This Art of Friendship throughout History.
Meet. Insult each other. Fight.
Become lifelong friends.
And then the Commies started giving EVERYONE prizes just for breathing.
Amen!!!!
It's so good to watch these episodes again after all of these years and especially with someone who is watching them for the first time.
I grew up in the 60's and 70's. I remember my dad watched it every week. Lots of good memories! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I loved these shows. Back when Americans could laugh and find humor in our differences
We still can and do. You're only thinking about Twitter which isn't a real place.
The actors and comedians of
All in the Family and the Jeffersons were brilliant.
All in the Family and The Jeffersons were two of the funniest shows ever!
im an older guy i grew up watching both of these talented groups of people plus sanford and son and many others i enjoyed them because they knew how to teach joke and have fun with everyone at the same time. it was just folks being folks and i wish we had a bit more of that in our lives right now. keep being you man.
Carroll O’Connor also starred in “In The Heat of the Night (TV series) playing a completely different personality. He did a great job on both shows imo 😊
I like that one!
He was a wonderful talent.
You don't get better than George Jefferson and Archie bunker and their interactions. It without a doubt changed American TV forever
As the story goes, the producers (wisely) wanted Sherman Hemsley to play the part of George from the very start . However he was not immediately available and waited for Sherman to became available before expanding the character of George.
it added a nice twist having his brother pretending to be him.
The banter between Archie and George was as funny as you could get.
No one got offended they made it fun to laugh at each other.
One of my all time favorite shows. George Jefferson kept me in stitches! Rip Sherman Helmsley
We had fun back in those days!!
Sherman and Carol had amazing comedic delivery… loved both shows as a kid 👍
As a honky...that sh** is funny as hell!!!! And the look George gave walkin out the door 👍 freakin perfect!!! Comedy gold!
LOVED watching The Jefferson’s, Archie Bunker , Sanford and Son and Good Times . The were AWESOME shows !!!!
These two were pure geniuses! People could not handle this these days! People have gotten to serious. Great video my friend.
Beautifully said👍
Meathead was an idiot!
@@greezythumb loved that show❤ we still watch it when it comes on a syndicated station "Dine-O- mite!"
One of the best episodes was when Sammy Davis Jr was on if you havent seen it, thats a must!!
Both episodes
LOVE THESE MY MAN! And you do a great job bringing it. People so damn sensitive these daze it's cool to see it when folks just chill and take comedy for what it is. I love that old school comedy the most because it wasn't scared to bring it.
You, my friend are my favorite to watch!! I'm so sick of all the offended people on RUclips.... we all laughed with each other, not at each other. Life was so much funner in the 70's and 80's... even 90's people weren't so damn soft! Thanks for making me smile and laugh. I love your humor and lightheartedness.. its a breath of fresh air.
My dad's favorite show.
I wish we had more of this kinda back and forth comedy today. I grew up watching this!!! Made people realize that we aren't that different, we can all smile and laugh. Seems like today all we do together is hate. Sadness. Much love from Texas ❤🤍💙
As a family, in the ‘70’s, we would all come together to watch, All in The Family.” My dad would laugh the loudest! Good times❤
Yes. My fam too. We loved it
The episode where Sammy Davis Jr. kisses Archie on the cheek is classic!!
Those truly were the days.
Love seeing this video! Best show ever, the comedy was genius. Let this show be a lesson to us all! So cool.
Literally crying. 😂
I loved that last line, a great parting shot. 😆
Sherman Hemsley was a great comedian in his own right.
Both All In The Family and The Jeffersons were such great shows.
Thank you for a great show and showing your side of humor....😊
I enjoyed this video
Thanks !😊
As a child I watched All in the Family and was caught up in the stories. Now I would be fascinated to know how Carroll and Sherman maintained their dialogue without losing it. How did the whole cast maintain composure?
I loved both of these shows as a kid. Hilarious.
Keep watching them..😂😂😂😂
It was one of the funniest shows! They played off each other so well and as the show continued their was such emotional growth as well for a comedy that educated with humor! One of my other favorites was Sanford and Son! Redd Foxx was amazing!!!❤
AITF is one of my all time favorite programs along with its spin offs, that include "The Jeffersons" "Good Times" "Maude"and more. Definitely Worth watching every episode. Archie does grow as a person, he's just not doing it overnight. lol
Liked Sanford and Son as well!
Oh gosh, Van, you crack me up!! I just found this channel when I was watching All In The Family videos! Your reactions are fun to hear. You are a funny, funny guy!!
Grew up watching All in the Family snd the Jefferson’s. Archie and George were so funny. These shows had our entire family laughing. Why can’t we have shows like this now? It was so fun to watch my parents laugh. Laughing is good for you. We don’t get enough of this anymore.
Ok, I subscribed. I would love to see the episode called: A sock and a shoe. Best All in the Family episode ever. Just Archie and Meathead arguing how to put on a sock and shoe.
Your reaction to “honky house” was priceless. All of us who watched this show each week couldn’t stop laughing when he said it. All in the Family and The Jefferson’s were iconic shows from and era when people weren’t offended as easily as our current culture. As another commenter stated, we laughed together. Unfortunately, political ideologies divided us and we lost our sense of humor.
Archie and George were two peas in a pod only thing was they were on opposite ends with a lot of peas in between I forgot how funny they were 😂😂 and that was Archie's son-in-law he always called him Meathead
That’s when we could laugh at each other and with each other. I miss those days… we are toooo soft!
This is my childhood. Back when funny was funny even if the two most popular shows leading roles were flaming racists. MAFA - Make America Funny Again
This was my childhood too. I'm only 37, but my parents made sure to introduce me go the classica... all in the family, threes company, good times etc
With all the other first time stuff All in the Family gave us, they also get the award for the first toilet flush in television history.
Why not repeat it? It was hilarious and delivered to perfection by Sherman Hemsley.
I loved The Jefferson's. I always wanted to dance like George but couldn't do it like he did. He got down.
I was born in 81 I loved all these shows Jefferson’s, 227, all in the family all them like this.
The episode when Archie has to have surgery and has to receive a blood transfusion and he gets it from a Black woman without knowing it. It's brilliantly funny!!!!
The thing with George and Archie is that they insulted everybody, family, friends not off limits
I watched every episode with my parents. The show actually makes me think of them because we all loved it so much. And everyone loved it. All colors, all creeds, all religions....no one took offense, because none was given. Seems like it's all gone to hell now.
An awesome analysis at the beginning of this video, in your preface. That was a brilliant assessment.
classic...no censorship...that what I grew up on hahha. No one was hurt, we all laughed together
It's a shame that with modern hypersensitivity, this kind of great comedy doesn't seem possible nowadays.
Sadly, it would be cancelled after the first couple episodrs.
I know, a trans woman can’t even touch a Bud Light without millions of people taking offense.
Carrol O'Connor thought the pilot wouldn't air.
