Carol O'Conner(Archie) and Jean Stapleton(Edith) had such charisma and connection in this series. It takes some fine acting to play a silly, naive woman. Edith did it to perfection and Archie character was a huge bigot yet he was still was able to endear people to him. You'd almost forget they weren't really a married couple. I never missed All in The Family. It has to be one of the most loved sitcoms ever. It is Dorthy from Golden Girls. Bea Aurthur.
@larryzigler6812 with all due respect sir, I just went through the other comments, I disagree. Perhaps YOU saw it different? If we all missed the point, please kindly Enlighten us and explain yourself.
Classic comedy that still makes us laugh without saying a word...just his look brought the house down with laughter..these actors played so well off each other....I totally enjoyed your reaction your laugh is so infectious and uplifting...really brightened my day thank you...Karl from eastern Canada☮❤😂
Hi Sarah! The subtle idea behind comedians like Carrol O'Conner was that they portrayed screwy people in a way that they reminded us of ourselves! I so much appreciated your reaction today, I needed something to make me laugh. You succeeded! Thank you. 😇😁🌹🤣😅😂🌹
Shows like 'All In the Family' and 'The Jeffersons' actually healed racial tensions in the 1970s, which I firmly believe was the least racist decade in our history.
@@Mess2012Z I watched these shows when they weren't reruns so it was really interesting to watch the controversy play out in real time with the adults and it actually created conversation in our homes and nationally. Being a kid in the 70's we didn't see differences in color we were just kids and it's sad to see adults tarnish race relations today but with God's love we can heal the division...Thank you again 🙏
Bea Arthur aka "Dorothy" was in the clip you watched. Long before "The Golden Girls", she had a successful show titled "Maude" that ran for 6 seasons. The actress who played Blanche on Golden Girls co-starred with Bea as Maude's friend and neighbor Vivian.
Such a great reaction, as a young boy in the 80s I used to watch re runs with my father. The show really captures alot, in terms of arrogance, intelligence and just plain stupid funny etc, etc. such a great show people nowadays could learn alot from this show
Yes, at #6, that’s the same actress, Bea Arthur. Her appearance and performance in her role as “Cousin Maude” on that episode of AitF impressed Norman Lear and CBS execs so much, they gave her her own sitcom called _Maude_ , where she was on with fellow future _Golden Girls_ co-star Rue McClanahan (Blanche).
Beatrice Arthur played both parts. In "All in the Family", she played Ediths cousin Maude. A few years later there was a spin-off named "Maude". 1990's Dorthy Zbornaik was created in the "Golden Girls". Archie was alone in the cellar because the basement door lock was broke and often locked when the door was shut. The furnace was broke and Arch thought he could fix it so he went down to then to take a look when he got locked down there. While bored, he found a bottle of booze and you saw that result 😂. Family was gone because of no heat and NY winters got a lot colder back in the 70's. When the repairman got there, he found Archie.
The funniest was the one when everybody had the flu and Maude had to come and help Edith. (Of course, the funniest of anything was "The Bullwinkle Show," which will never be topped.)
Absolutely one of the greatest of all time. A lot of subjects, and dialogue, would not pass muster on today's "regular" TV. Those of us who grew up and lived in NYC knew guys like this.
The chair trick is a fun one and usually angers men. Women’s center of gravity is in the hips-men’s is in their chest and that’s why they can’t stand up w the chair🥰
The chair trick was big at parties in the 70s. Men were increasingly more determined to prove their abilities as the night went on, and increasingly less able. 😂🎉
Locked In The Cellar : Archie's neighbor Irene Lorenzo provided the Bunkers with a new lock for the cellar door which locks from the outside. After she noticed how quickly the door shuts on itself, she suggested she make some adjustments so no one gets locked in the cellar. Archie, always the impatient one, could not get Irene out of his house fast enough so he says "That's not necessary, thank you very much, and good night, Irene" and ushers her out. Not even an hour later, the entire family leave for the weekend, except Archie who chose to stay behind (cos it was a family event on Edith's side that Archie wanted nothing to do with). Archie began enjoying his solitude until he managed to get himself locked in the cellar. While down there, thinking he could be trapped for a long time (at least the entire weekend), he finds some booze and gets drunk. He also finds a tape recorder, and while completely bombed, leaves a recording as his "last will & testament". It gets even more hilarious when a repairman scheduled to inspect the furnace comes by and Archie thinks it's the voice of God...
Yes, that's Bea Arthur (Dorothy Zbornak on Golden girls) this show was a spinoff to her sitcom called "Maude". You should check out her sitcom Maude, it is hilarious. Great reaction.
I'm so glad that you enjoyed that and I loved watching your expressions and how you just absorbed everything all in fun and it's a delightful show even though it talked about some crazy stuff that people would be so offended by today it's all in good fun and in those days people got a long enough to be able to answer like that and it was okay and now it's not okay and it's sad that now people get so offended and you can't joke like you used to and it's hard to say and do a lot without a lot of correctness and just so glad to see you the light in the show that brought so much laughter for so many people including myself because it was all good fun
Honestly this show is probably the greatest sit-com. I put seinfeld right behind it. But All in The Family is not only hilarious, they tackled a lot of controversial subjects just perfectly.
All In the Family debuted in the Fall of 1971. The Jeffersons and Maude were spinoffs from All In The Family. Archie Bunker always called his son-in-law Meathead, because he was a liberal and an Atheist. You should definitely check out Archie Bunker on Religion and another great one is "Fireworks at a mixed marriage ". Hope you have a great day!
It may have been mentioned previously but “All in the family” was based on the British show “Till death do us part” which starred the character Alf Garnet. All in the family named the Alf character Archie Bunker, Archie was a bit racist and backwards but it wasn’t from a place of malice, it was just how his generation was brought up.
Yes, that was Bea Arthur as Maude Findlay (Edith's cousin and thorn in Archie's side), who went on to play Dorothy Zbornak in The Golden Girls in the 80s/90s.
Bea Aurther is the actress who played in All in the Family and the Golden Girls. She play's Edith's cousin (Maude) in All in the Family. They made a spin-off show from that episode. It's called Maude.
"All in the Family" was the first television series created by acclaimed screenwriter and producer Norman Lear, who re-invented the TV Sitcom in the 1970s. His Wikipedia page is worth a look if you plan to react to more 70s sitcoms. Lear also created Maude, Sanford and Son, One Day at a Time, The Jeffersons and Good Times. He was known for tackling contentious social issues in his shows.
I watched Sanford and Son, All in the Family and The Jeffersons which was a spin off from All in the Family which I believe is why my generation isn't easily offended. The bigotry, racism etc was meant to bring awareness to us, US and to me it worked. Maude was a spin off too
The chair thing is a real thing. Since a man’s balance is at his shoulders and woman’s balance is at their hips, when a man leans forward like that, their center of gravity is not lined up.
You need to find the full clip of Archie in the basement and keep in mind the last clip from this video where he argues with Henry Jefferson about God not being black.
Yes that's Bee Arthur playing cousin Maude on all in the family. She got her own sitcom Maude a spinoff of the Maude character from all in the family it was also a #1 hits sitcom you should react to her show Maude.😂🤣✌️❤️
When Archie got mad about the people in the picture. The people in the picture were Lionel Jefferson and Archie's Niece Linda. Archie's character doesn't believe in interracial couples. That's why he was so upset.
Great show - I watch back in the 1970's when it first come on. Big TV hit! She is Dorothy (years younger) from the Golden girls. Her name is Beatrice Arthur.
That opening scene isn't even the best one of Archie's "pantomime suicides". He has done one simulating hanging himself, slashing his wrists, and playing Russian Roulette. They are his exasperated way of dealing with his wife Edith's endless babbling and looooong story telling. Usually he is quick to get her to pipe down and stop her before she gets started, but sometimes she gets too far along and then there's no stopping her - that's when he gets completely defeated.
One of the best shows ever!! 😂😂😂
I loved that show!
What an infectious laugh! Lovely lady!

What
Playing Maude
Maude was her iconic character.
She also drove trucks during WWII (stateside) for the Marine Corps. Discharged as a staff sergeant.
It makes it even funnier, listening to how hard you’re laughing this is great.
Loved your reaction, nice to remember there was a time we could be politically incorrect, and still laugh at ourselves..Thanks
You did not get the point of the show

Can you just imagine ain't no way a show like that could even make it in these days Sarah 😁🤣😂

This was such a fantastic show back in my day, and they were all incredible actors
Your laugh is why I keep watching you!

The whole episodes are gold. But the whole episode of locked in the cellar is the funniest of all.
I wouldn't go that far but it's top ten
