My brother Randy and I wrote this, Randy sang the verses and El took the hook! I co wrote and wrote alot of our hits, were still being sampled today ❤ Thanks for listening 🎧
The Debarge family is a part of two successful groups. Switch (1977) with Bobby Debarge, one of the best falsetto to ever do it. He is the older brother of the family. His younger siblings formed the group Debarge around 1982 or 83. El Debarge is the falsetto for this group. You should listen to "They'll never be" by Switch to hear Bobby's voice. Phillip Ingram (James Ingram's younger brother) is also a part of this group. You'll love them as well!
Yes and with all of the hits DeBarge had, "Rythem of the Night” is the only video that was made, due to conflict in the group. This family fell prey to drugs, alcohol, physical, sexual, and mental abuse.
The Debarge family had a rough life -- grew up in Detroit and Grand Rapids, mixed race with an abusive father. Their mother had them in church and was a singer, so they were always brought up with an appreciation for music. There were ten kids, eight boys and two girls. The oldest two boys, Bobby (#2) and Tommy (#3), were a part of a Motown group called Switch that had some moderate success in the late 1970s. Bobby has the sweetest, purest voice of all the brothers -- "I Call Your Name" is probably his magnum opus, but really any Switch cut offers dynamic proof of his talent. Bobby got his older sister Bunny (#1) and younger brothers Randy (#4), Marty #5), and El (#6) a deal with Motown to perform as the group DeBarge. Their first album as a quartet didn't go far, but the next year, they released the "All This Love" album with their younger brother James (#7) now in the group and it was a success ("I Like It" is on this album). They followed with a couple more albums before El and Bunny went solo; Bunny didn't find much success alone, but El has had hit and miss success over the years. Younger brother Chico (#8) had a moderate solo hit back in the 1980s and with his 1997 hit "No Guarantee." The youngest two are fraternal twins, Peaches and Darrell, who goes by "Young DeBarge" and has also released music. Only Peaches has not pursued music. Album cover (clockwise, standing to sitting): Bunny, El, Marty, Randy, and James.
I love them all so much they gave SO MUCH to us musically && I hope they know that we love and appreciate them. This that feel good music it will forever be iconic ♥️🔥♥️🔥
Debarge is mixed with Black and French, their mother comes from a gospel musical background. El was the main songwriter, arranger, and producer for the group. Bunny, Randy, and Mark wrote only one or two songs a piece. El has five solo Albums, most sampled group and most underrated too.
Yes his name is El Debarge. A couple years ago you did a reaction for Quincy Jones “Secret Garden” and you loved the guy with high falsetto. That was El Debarge.
El Debarge is an all time underrated singer to me. His voice is so timeless and he's still amazing. The Debarge family's material is a rabbithole well worth going down into.
El Debarge is the lead singer. Jack you are the best. Keep this great music alive. More Debarge please. Switch was lead by the vocals of Bobby Debarge, and you should react to them also. Great reaction today.
Actually, this song is led by both Randy and El. El only sings the part that begins "I like the way you comb your hair ..." and the high parts at the end.
@@russelbarnes7235 Their voices sound so much alike on this song it would be hard to know without actual video evidence (their performance on Soul Train, the Bobby DeBarge movie, etc)
I recommend watching their documentary Unsung on RUclips. It’s very telling… very talented family that suffered through a lot. The only girl, Bunny wrote A Dream which Tupac sampled on I Ain’t Mad at ya
I don't know if you've reacted to it yet, but be sure to review DeBarge's "Love Me in a Special Way. My personal favorite of theirs, and I think you'll appreciate it when you hear it. And FYI, DeBarge is the name of the group, and it's their family name; they're all siblings. They were deemed the next Jackson 5 at one point during the 80s. When you hear the name DeBarge, you probably are thinking directly about arguably the most popular member of the group, El DeBarge, the vocalist of most of their songs.
the lead singer usually is El, the one in the blue sweater, but on this song the lead singer is the one wit the tie in the front, his name is james...El is singing the riffs, and the ending, and the I LILE THE WAY U COMB YOUR HAIR parts
Randy, the one on the far right starts lead. Eldra, the one standing in the blue, comes in on, “I like the way you comb your hair...” and finishes the song on those high notes
Speaking of Debarge you gotta react to Switch a group that Bobby Debarge was a part of he had the real falsetto of the family. Try the song There Will Never Be by Switch.
They are a group, all brothers and there sister. This song has Randy debarge singing the beginning of first 2 verses and second half of both verses and bridge is El debarge is singing those parts.
Debarge were next level Motown in the 80’s. In fact they were groomed to be the next Jackson family under Berry Gordy. El Debarge was a legendary falsetto and was a standout in the group like Michael Jackson. All time great group in the 80’s.
They have another brother chico debarge he started making around the same time as them but made it big in the 90's check out give you what you want (for sure) from him it is💥
Fun fact: That one in front with the skinny tie (James DeBarge) was married to Janet Jackson for about 5 minutes way back in the day lol. Joe Jackson wasn’t having it at the time and also James had some substance issues so they got an annulment.
A Dream and Love Me In A Special Way are other great songs. Debarge is the group name but became associated with El Debarge once he became the lead singer.
Yes, this is a family group. Eldra (El), Bunny, Mark, Randy and James, who was married to Janet Jackson for a short time. Bobby was in the group Switch with another brother, Tommy. The youngest brother, Chico, also has music out.❤
Alright so here's a good overview of songs to react for the Debarge Family: Switch-"I Call Your Name" and "They'll Never Be". The oldest brother Bobby was the lead singer of this group (R.I.P) DeBarge- "All This Love", "Love Me In A Special Way", "Rhythm Of The Night", "Queen of My Heart" , "Time Will Revel". El DeBarge was the lead singer of DeBarge and the most popular member. Also check out his solo single "Can't Get Enough". Chico DeBarge-"Love Still Good", "Iggin Me", "Virgin", "No Guarantee remix f. For years I thought the family was Puerto Rican because of the names they used for showbiz. It wasn't until I saw the documentary on them that I found out they're biracial black and white. Maybe it was the studio's strategy to market them that way. The lead singer went by the name EL Debarge. The EL is short for Eldra. There's a James, Robert (Bobby), Bunny, Jonathan (who goes by the stage name Chico). This family has faced lots of issues, but several months ago I watched Sheila E.'s YT channel and EL guest appeared. He is back making music again. I was so happy to hear that. His God given gift doesn't deserve to go to waste. I'm so glad he found his passion for singing again. Good singing these days...especially for R&B music is being buried and destroyed by the music studio industry.
debarge is a family unit of 10 9 brothers 1 sister but i believe only 5 of the siblings were in this group. bobby debarge made this song his voice is it. there was also a band called switch that bobby and at least one other debarge in that group

DeBarge family actually had several brothers and sisters. Ten, I think. Reminds me of the Sylvers who had either 9 or 10 children as well. Both families had it rough growing up, but both super talented families!
There's so many FANTASTIC DeBarge songs to react to and they are sampled so much so you will be able to spot the connection/inspiration for many other songs. "I Like It" is the second single from DeBarge's second album, All This Love (1982); it peaked at #31 on the Hot 100 and #2 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. A talented but supremely troubled bunch.
My first watched video from you was Tamias’ / Quincy Jones cover of a Debarge song Love me in a special way. El does it just as good. I love both equally.
Hey Jack…such a great channel…here are a couple of DeBarge songs to check out…Time Will Reveal and Love Me In A Special Way. FYI-the guy you are referring to is Eldra (El)…and his family is the group named DeBarge…all of them are talented singers /musicians.
People think Debarge is just one person because a lot of the brothers sound similar to each other. Just like on this song, one brother (Randy) is singing the verses while another (El) is singing the chorus and takes it home at the end. Then there is a brother named Bobby who is in the group Switch with a very similar voice. Because El DeBarge is the most popular of the siblings, they just think he is singing all these iconic songs by himself, but he's not.
This a family group! El, generaly, is lead vocalists on a majority of their well known tunes.
