I love Dutch sweets! I live in the western part of Germany so we often went on a day-trip to the Netherlands. Fresh stroopwafels from the markets are divine 🤤 I love how they have speculoos and gingerbread flavours all year long :)
To answer the question. Kids are supposed to put their shoes out with the drawings, carrots and sugar for the Sint's horse (who's called bad weather today) as far as i remember. It's also always a huge day when the sint arrives back into the countries ( Belgium and the Netherlands both celebrate) and he also announces that their are no bad children this year.
I was just sitting back waiting for Kate to say the noten would go good with tea, and sure enough. That’s how I love them! My grandparents immigrated from the Netherlands to the US. Funny how much of this food I already know and I’ve never been to the Netherlands! 😂 Love my Dutch heritage! ❤️🇳🇱
December 5th and 6th is celebrated in the Netherlands and Germany for Saint Nicholas, respectively, and it's a similar holiday in both countries. GErmnay and Sweden celebrate Christmas mainly on Christmas Eve, and that's the day of giving gifts. Germany, The NEtherlands and Sweden all celebrate Christmas for three days Dec 24 to 26.
This time of year is lovely, isn't it? I don't celebrate Christmas, but I love to see what people are up to & what new products are released, especially by food companies around this time of year 🤩.
Finally dutch treats I have been waiting for so long for this! I miss Holland I want all of those cakes, biscuits and chocolate we used to get big solid chocolate letters of the 1st letter of our name for the 5th of December
Gevulde speculaas= filled speculaas cookie.. it's made with the speculaas spices but it is not that brittle. Gevulde koek= filled cookie. Actually not at all seasonal! Gevulde koeken are a staple for already decades and decades! Yes for sure they are also produced fresh at bakeries and those are really divine! Actually the filling is not marzipan but amandel spijs= a softer mix of almond and sugar.
I recommend eating the Snelle Jelle breakfast cookie with some creamy butter, it's the best. They're also good with creamy butter and chocolate sprinkles.
I always buy my two boys Advent calendars. When they were younger it was the Lego version. Now they are just the chocolate ones. This year I bought them Lindt ones and they both love them. My oldest, who lives on his own at college, did admit to eating 10 days worth well before December 1st. No more giving it to him early. LOL
I just turned 40, and I have had an advent calendar every year I can remember. When I was a kid, it was always chocolate, but as an adult I've have a Harry Potter mini figure one, a sock one (which was only 12), a cheese one (2 years in a row now), and a build your own Christmas village (which was chocolate)
Hi Kate and Alex! Hope your family is well? I'm doing good. They do sell Tony's Chocolate here in the USA. I have never bought it yet.. Now I think I need too. I loved this Christmas box. Have a great week.
That was a wonderful box, we do get the almond cookies on a regular basis in Aldi. Love advent calendars I received a Nespresso one from my daughter this year, love having a different coffee each day 😋 Christmas is the best time of year sending best wishes from Australia 🦘

Oh this was wonderful. I was sooooo envious of those biscuits with almond paste in. I LOVE marzipan and we just don't have enough marzipan things in the UK do we

I find it awesome that you still like Advent Calendars. I haven't had one in years, but in the last few years I have been making them for my family - I even made one in a gingerbread shape for my Grandmother last year!
You guys are hilarious! I enjoy all your videos. Everything from British Starbucks looks delicious. I wish I could try them all. My favorite treat here at Japanese Starbucks is "Matcha coffee pop" and "gingerbread latte" for a drink. Thank you, Kate and Alex!

3:49 😂😂 haha the carrot is Not for Rudolph. Sinterklaas has horse named O-zo-snel. With his horse he goes up om the roof of the houses and puts presents down the chimney. A little bit the same as Santa Claus but oh zo different. Because Some kids in Holland also get presents from Santa Claus (de kerstman). Maybe you wanna look it up; the history of Sinterklaas..
pepernoten/kruidnoten are sold months before sinterklaas (september), we also call santa the christmasman ( kerstman ). You should eat 1 of each 3 types of the chocolate ones together at the same time. Hamka's are 1 of my fovarites, they are ham and cheese flavored ( ham + kaas ). Snelle Jelle or ontbijtkoek should be eaten with butter on top. Lots of kids get a slice of this in their lunch boxes ( next to bread).
Snelle Jelle is also the stage name of a popular singer. His name is Jelle, so he named himself after the gingerbread slice. the subway crisp is a limited edition, they do 3 flavours and then let the audience decide which one to keep (KFC fried chicken, Pizza Hut margherita, and the Subway one). Hamka's (ham-kaas) are favorite in the Netherlands and they've been around for ages. maybe it's the flavor profile that was a big hit there. it's the flavour of grilled ham-cheese sandwiches that are popular here. the dutch really love spiced biscuit. in any way, shape or form. I love the soft bakes known as taai taai (tough & stale) and pepernoten. "pepper nuts" aren't actually nuts and don't taste like pepper, so I hope a supermarket renames it. It looks like a piece of cobblestone street and tastes like aniseed. which is not everyone's favorite, but in Friesland it's a very common flavour. the dutch are really good at liquorice, like the scandinavians. that breakfast "cake" slice is something we enjoy with a warm cup of tea or coffee. I either put speculoospasta (spread) on a slice, or just dip the slice in my cup to soften it. as a kid I was really fortunate enough to live close to the border, we sometimes went to a cheap dutch supermarket, and the first Hema store was opened around here. always had the pleasure of knowing their food and traditions.
Leading up to the 5th of december children can set their shoe by the fireplace (most children dont have a fireplace nowadays so they will set it by the heater). That goes on, every day, from the moment Sinterklaas arrives with his boat (somewhere in november) to the 5th of december. the shoe will be filled by sinterklaas and his helpers, black pete's (or should I say mom and her helper, dad.) Every morning the child will find a toy or candy in their shoe. Sinterklaas is celebrated with your whole family. Everyone gets presents but only the kids will think it's Sinterklaas. The parents will hide them and will tell the kids "I think sinterklaas came by, I heard something in the yard/barn/kitchen" (wherever the parents hid the presents) My parents always said they had to go feed the chickens to knock on the window, throw some pepernoten and say it was Sinterklaas. Then the kids will run to the place and see jute bags full of presents. When they grow older (and dont believe anymore) all the pleople will fill in a list and pull a name so they can make a present for the person they pulled from the name pile. That happens on the 5th of december.
You asked if we leave things out for Sinterklaas, we do. Children will set their shoe by the fireplace leading up to the 5th of december and they will leave a carrot or apple (for Sinterklaas' horse) and/or a drawing for Sinterklaas and his helpers. There's also the sinterklaas news which the children can watch. the news will follow sinterklaas and his journey from spain to the netherlands. (there's always something going on, sometimes the presents get lost, drawings get stolen, one time they forgot Sinterklaas entirely (his helpers just left without him and they found out a few days after they left) Very funny to watch, also as an adult, they implement a lot of political aspects to the episodes so it's always very funny.

Would you like to get a box from Greece? I would ask you for patience, just started here to work and still geeting used here. But midst of April I could send some Greek things. Now with candy they might be similar to other European continental countries. But I'll do my best to make it authentically Greek.
If you 2 would like to see some crazy advent calendars, you should watch Ashen's channel he did a cheese one last year, and the year before that he did some dumb toy one, and this year he's got 2 different amazing ones. i totally recommend watching him and his friend torture themselves with cheese toys and random tat.
So Kate and Alex I’m from America In Pennsylvania to be exact. We say Santa Claus. Do u say Father Christmas over there? In Pa we eat pork and sourkrout on New Year’s Day for good luck. I was wondering if u ever had pork and sourkrout? It’s made with pork and sourkrout on top of mashed potatoes. It’s one of my favorite all time dishes.
How bizarre, I wanted to send you a box months ago. You had to many boxes to go true, that's why couldn't send one jet. Whould have been the first Box from the Netherlands and then your first box is also from a Naomi. Hope to be allowed to send a box soon, my son is still asking about it
fun fact. your Santa Clause is derived from our Sinterkalaas. we celebrated it first. England took that idea and transformed it in to Santa Clause. but Sinterklaas was first way way first. And unlike Santa Clause Sinterklaas actually existed.
I usually just watch the American videos (yea i need to be more cultured lol) but my dog is the National dog of the Netherlands so I had to check out the Dutch video :-)
@@ThisWithThem yes we still have Christmas and Santa. Sinterklaas is more for kids :) Parents threaten naughty kids that Sinterklaas is taking them to Spain 🤭
the subway one is a limited edition, they do 3 flavours and then let the audience decide which one to keep (KFC fried chicken, Pizza Hut margherita, and the Subway one). Hamka's (ham-kaas) are favorite in the Netherlands and they've been around for ages. maybe it's the flavor profile that was a big hit there. it's the flavour of grilled ham-cheese sandwiches that are popular here.
Sinterklaas is not the same as Christmas. Sinterklaas is a seperate holiday. We also have Christmas. Completely different guy, different traditions, different date. Just fyi.
@@ThisWithThem Sinterklaas is definitely more of a children's holiday. It is a bit controversial these days, because it is an old white guy who has "Zwarte Pieten" (Zwart means black in Dutch. Piet is the Dutch spelling of the name Pete) working for him. Kind of like how the Smurfs (the blue fantasy creatures) have different kinds of smurfs, there's different kinds of Petes. Like a head pete, a packing pete, etc. It's celebrating Sinterklaas' birthday. The original Saint Nicolas was a very generous man, and they based the legends and holiday on him. You put your shoe underneath the chimney (or at the door if you didn't have a chimney), leave a drawing or letter for him, maybe a carrot for his horse (he has a white horse), and the next day there would be kruidnoten or pepernoten (the spiced little cookie things you had in the beginning of the video), with some chocolates, and a wrapped present in/around your shoe. Christmas is the same over here as it is everywhere else, except we have Christmas Eve, First Christmas Day and Second Christmas Day. (kind of like boxing day, mostly where people return gifts or go buy more things, not really much of an actual festive day) Sorry for the long message, but hopefully this teaches anyone who reads this a little bit more about it. :)
🇨🇦Hi guys hope 🐶you guys 🎄have a 👦🏻wonderful Christmas🎄 I hope you say hi to 👩your mom for me is it snowing❄️ there was cold here❄️I love all the stuff you🍬 got here today🥤 looks so delicious🐶 when is the last🐶 day before Christmas📹
kruidnoten lol a few weeks before saint nicolas???? a few months is more accurate. if you know a little church history Saint Nicolas attended the first council of Nicea
Santa claus is derived from sinterklaas. Santa, or father christmas as you call him is just a ripoff. Christmas for us is just a holiday to be with family and eat big festive meals.
Omg!!! I have send you this box and I’m so excited to watch this!
I bet it’s fun watching them eating the things u sent them

If you 2 would like to see some crazy advent calendars, you should watch Ashen's channel he did a cheese one last year, and the year before that he did some dumb toy one, and this year he's got 2 different amazing ones. i totally recommend watching him and his friend torture themselves with cheese toys and random tat.
Snelle Jelle with butter, that's delicious
Hope to be allowed to send a box soon, my son is still asking about it
Woah that really is bizarre isn’t it!! In the new year we would absolutely love that! Thank you Naomi 🥰
fun fact. your Santa Clause is derived from our Sinterkalaas. we celebrated it first. England took that idea and transformed it in to Santa Clause. but Sinterklaas was first way way first. And unlike Santa Clause Sinterklaas actually existed.
I wonder if you have ever tried "oliebollen".
I’ve not had a advent calendar for 5 years ( maybe more) as I am apparently ‘to old’
neat a bar of chocolate turns into a tree so neat
Yeah so cool isn’t it!
But oh oh oh kruidnoten are for Sinterklaas which is not christmas!! We doe celebrate christmas over here, those are two different holidays ;)
I usually just watch the American videos (yea i need to be more cultured lol) but my dog is the National dog of the Netherlands so I had to check out the Dutch video :-)
which dog ? 🙂

Do we leave the gevulde speculaas out for Sinterklaas? No, we leave him a carrot for his horse.
You guys should make the rating scale up to 20
I too want teriyaki chips/crisps!
Sinterklaas and Christmas/Santa are not the same 😁
Might have got a little confused thinking they were the same! Thank you Samantha! Do you still get Santa?
@@ThisWithThem yes we still have Christmas and Santa.
Sinterklaas is more for kids :)
Parents threaten naughty kids that Sinterklaas is taking them to Spain 🤭
@@ThisWithThem Some of us even get Odin lol
Hi Kate and Alex 🎄❄🍬🍫🍫🍭🍪🍩
Hey Helena 😀♥️🎉🎄🍫🍬🍭
Tony chocolony also sells chocolate milk
Santa Claus is based on Sinterklaas. That is what we learned as kinds on school! 🙂
Neither of those two Lay's varieties appear to be available in America.
the subway one is a limited edition, they do 3 flavours and then let the audience decide which one to keep (KFC fried chicken, Pizza Hut margherita, and the Subway one).
Hamka's (ham-kaas) are favorite in the Netherlands and they've been around for ages. maybe it's the flavor profile that was a big hit there. it's the flavour of grilled ham-cheese sandwiches that are popular here.
Hi Kate and Alex! Have either of you tried chocolate covered grapes before?
You need to put carots in your shoes voor his hors
Sinterklaas is not the same as Christmas. Sinterklaas is a seperate holiday. We also have Christmas. Completely different guy, different traditions, different date. Just fyi.
Ahhh we definitely didn’t get that 🙈🙈🙈 that’s amazing you have both. Is one celebrated more or seen as the bigger holiday?
(kind of like boxing day, mostly where people return gifts or go buy more things, not really much of an actual festive day)
Sorry for the long message, but hopefully this teaches anyone who reads this a little bit more about it. :)
I have a cuzion that lives in the natherlands 🥰
🇨🇦Hi guys hope 🐶you guys 🎄have a 👦🏻wonderful Christmas🎄 I hope you say hi to 👩your mom for me is it snowing❄️ there was cold here❄️I love all the stuff you🍬 got here today🥤 looks so delicious🐶 when is the last🐶 day before Christmas📹
We found Tony’s.
I've got 2 advent calendars and I'm nearly 32
Watching this the day after the penultimate f1 race and hearing Max Verstappen's name made my toes curl (sorry Dutch supporters, I'm a Brit) 🤪👍
kruidnoten lol a few weeks before saint nicolas???? a few months is more accurate. if you know a little church history Saint Nicolas attended the first council of Nicea
Santa claus is derived from sinterklaas. Santa, or father christmas as you call him is just a ripoff. Christmas for us is just a holiday to be with family and eat big festive meals.
Hamka's are Ham cheese (Ham kaas)
