- Isshin is such an amazing commander since you can build him in so many different ways. In this deck I showcase two different ways to build him. If enough people like the video, I'll put a link to both deck lists in the description.

CLARIFICATIONS:
- Crown of Doom will NOT get an additional trigger off of Isshin because you don't control it. It's still a great card to add though because it still pumps creatures attacking that opponent.
- Cards like Farrel's Mantle and Orcish Squatters will NOT get an additional trigger off of Isshin because they trigger on block (or lack thereof) and not on attack. The wording is a bit confusing, so unfortunately they don't work with Isshin. They're still super flavorful includes and still work with the deck. Not everything has to work with the commander, after all :P
Thanks to @frongflung and @Steak0 for catching these, respectively!
Actually, I'm pretty sure you're wrong about Farrel's Mantle and Orcish Squatters. A triggered ability uses the words "when", "whenever", or "at". These cards DO trigger. "Whenever it attacks, if it isn't blocked". The part where it says "if it isn't blocked" is a cost of the triggered ability to be triggered, based on ATTACK; Hence: "Whenever enchanted creature attacks" on Farrel's Mantle and "Whenever Orcish Squatter's attacks" on Orcish Squatters. So! If these creatures ATTACK, and aren't blocked, the "cost" has been paid for the triggered ability on ATTACK. But if they are blocked, naturally, no such ability goes off. Everything in Magic that says "whenever a creature attacks" or "whenever this creature attacks" is a triggered attack ability based on those words... Which is why Isshin doubles all attack triggers, and not just your own. A creature has to say "whenever this creature blocks" to be considered a block ability. Also, if you're referring to the Ice Age printing of both of these cards where their ability starts with the word "IF", they were reprinted in Master Edition 2, to be considered a triggered ability, using the word "whenever".
@@SilhouettedEntity Someone commented that they didn't, so I asked some judges and they clarified that they don't. I thought they did by your same logic. But the judges say that they're not triggers that Isshin can make another instance of since they're actually block triggers.
@@TheCommanderTavern it's definitely an attack trigger. You can't just ignore that... By every word, it's an attack trigger and has nothing to do with blocking. A block trigger is "whenever this creature blocks". Follows the same rules. This one is "whenever this creature ATTACKS and isnt blocked." The blocking being the cost... Maybe it'll go up for debate in time. Cause these cards definitely work like that.
@@SilhouettedEntity Again, I thought the same thing. But once someone made me doubt it, I went to a judge's chat to make sure I wasn't wrong and I ended up being wrong. Isshin does NOT work with cards like Ferrel's Mantle and Orcish Settlers. The judges said so.
@@TheCommanderTavern nah. It do
Perfect. The defensive strategy was something that I thought of straight away, and you have encapsulated it beautifully in this video. Thanks!
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it!
Cool deck man! I need to come back later to see the decklist
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
I always put out my videos on a schedule (since I work then having them released more or less the same time each Monday is super useful) so in order to not spoil them (patrons get early access) I don't post the deck list on tappedout until after the video is live. So it takes me a while to put it up there and then get it out. Hence why it's always "coming soon". But, now that I'm off work, I can edit the post. From the looks of it, with a bit more interaction and petitions for the defensive build, I might start getting to work on that one as well :P
In the mean time, here's the link to the aggressive version I focus more on in the video:

Defensive build is now in the description! Enjoy!
I've been loving your takes on the Kamigawa legends, and this is no exception! Would really like to see the more defensive build as well, since I got two copies of Isshin in some packs!
Thanks! Happy you like them!
These legends are super inspiring and the good thing is that there's no "true" way to build them since they're not super restrictive. So I've taken the road less taken with a lot of them :P
Yeah! If enough people like the video and want me to flesh out the defensive version, I definitely will! I'd have to test that version more and polish it (since I focused more on the aggressive version), which'll take some more time, but if that's what the public wants, so be it! :D
Defensive build is now in the description! Enjoy!
Love your vids! I'm a fan of these longer ones as I use them as a sort of podcast, excited for a potential tameshi vid!
Thanks! Glad you like them! They're definitely more work when they're longer so I'm super pumped when the hard work is appreciated 🙂
I do like Tameshi, but I feel like building around it would be like what I did with Go-Shintai (enchantment reanimator) but I feel like I could potentially go in a stax direction, by adding all of the evil enchantments I mentioned in the intro to the Go-Shintai video 😈
@@TheCommanderTavern Tameshi stax, that is my name calling, stax stax stax
@@nunovieira3459 Oh, if I build Tameshi, it's definitely gonna be stax 😈

I've built my Isshin deck with the old Eldrazi titans, minus Emmy sadly, and you've given me a few ideas on lowering the mana cost a little bit. So, thanks for that.
Nice! Glad it was useful!
Never heard of Farrel's Mantle before, or Orcish Squatters. Those are some hilarious effects my playgroup won't see coming!
I'd also love to see the more defensive decklist, too!
Thanks for commenting!
Glad you learned about some super sweet old school tech. Hopefully your playgroup will be like "what the hell is that?!"
Defensive build is now in the description! Enjoy!
great insight! Currently building some sort of hybrid aggressive-pillowfort-goading version of him, hoefully that deck doesn't want too much at once😅
Would love to see the pillow-fort verson of yours!
EDIT: 27:55 Correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm pretty certain that all the "attack trggers" that trigger when the creature is not blocked will be put on the stack at the or right after the declare blockers step, so it won't be triggering Isshin, same as with Guiltfeeder.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Building a mix of most of those strategies might require a ton of tweaking, but I'm pretty sure there must be some Goldilocks zone for it where everything runs right. I think that leaning more heavily to one of either side is ideal, but let me know how it turns out!
@@TheCommanderTavern will do! Also, i made an EDIT on the original comment as a FYI.
@@SteakOSaurier Yeah, I just checked it. Thanks for the clarification!
@@TheCommanderTavern You're very much welcome! Love brewing with others.

dude, you knkw who ishin is pogers with ! Kaliea of the Vast " god dang the gas in that build is crazy op
Oh, definitely. Isshin in the 99 of Kaalia is just busted.
@@TheCommanderTavern ima build it but i lost my ishin 😂 unfortunatly ill have to buy another box
@@joefuller3886 Damn, wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy another Isshin XD
@@TheCommanderTavern maby but i dont get card in the mail to tje right address any how i can order them but its only like 20% chance ill get them in my mailbox lol
We need a fourth combat matters commander (maybe Winota?). So that Thantis, Isshin, and Wulfgar can settle things properly!
And asking if I knew about Farrel's Mantle, when I believe that Gaze of Pain might also be worth considering 😎
Lol, if I were playing with Isshin (at least with a defensive build) I would love it if my opponent was Thantis XD
Gaze of Pain was definitely on my watchlist as a flavorful piece of interaction, but I'd have to include more evasive things (Intimidation was also in my initial build while I was testing the deck). When I took out Intimidation and Filth, Gaze of Pain made even less sense to include. Still a super flavorful "what the hell?!" card to include though ;)
@@TheCommanderTavern something to consider is that Gaze of Pain and Farrel's Mantle can be used politically, because you can deal the damage to any creature not just ones the defending player controls
@@crovax1375 Oh snap! You're right! Gaze of Pain isn't limited to target creature the defending player controls. And since it won't deal combat damage to an opponent, you could send a lot of attackers their way then essentially wipe someone else's board. Super evil! I love it! Definitely some amazing anti-archenemy tech right there!
Got a question. On 15:35 you said tokens coming in play tapped and attacking don't trigger attack effects. This includes effects like brutal hoardchief and campaign of vengence, that ping target opponent for 1 damage for every creature attacking?
Exactly, because they're already attacking. They will not trigger anything that triggers on a creature attacking. So they won't trigger Brutal Hordechief, Calculating Lich, Hellrider, etc.
@@TheCommanderTavern Oh F. I was doing it wrong then. At least now i know. Thnx
@@VentusGR No problem!
I especially like this commander because the deck is still functional without him in play. Obviously way better when you get 2 triggers but still.
Exactly, the deck's still good without him but super good with him.
I’m not sure but I think Crown of doom may not work with Isshin as
Isshin trigger ability will work on “Permanent you control” but
Crown of Doom said that other players “Gain control” of it so it is the permanent you own but not the permanent you control
I’m not sure about this. Anyone please correct me.
You're actually correct! You have to control Crown of Doom instead of owning it. Thanks for the clarification!
Either way, Crown of Doom is still a good card to include (even if it doesn't get an additional trigger from Isshin) because it still triggers when your opponents attack each other. So even if the attackers only get the pump once, it's still a decent enough pump to start hurting your opponents.
@@TheCommanderTavern Yeah Couldn’t agree more. It works well with politic or forced combat theme just like Breena.
@@Hobbinto Yup!
You were also credited in the pinned comment for catching that for me :)
do you have a decklist for a blend of offense/defense build?
The one in the video is sort of like a blend, in that there're a couple of attack deterrent pieces in it. But you could take out some potentially underperforming pieces for some defensive cards. For example, you could take out Farrel's Mantle, Orcish Squatters, and Crown of Doom for 3 defensive cards that Isshin can interact with. That would make it more blended.
question, can idk Sword of selves and sword of animist work in tandem with ishin ? ( ie. equip both swords to ishin, atk get an ishen for eavery other opponent not attacked, do they make sword of animist grab more manna ?
Yes, myriad triggers an additional time thanks to Isshin. So if you had a creature equipped with Blade of Selves attack, it'll get an additional token per opponent (except the defending player, since you don't get a token for them).
Sword of the Animist also triggers an additional time so you get to ramp for an additional basic land once the first trigger resolves. But you'd essentially just ramp for both to save time.
so, say i have 4 opponents , am i ramping 4 lands or 8 lands ?
@@joefuller3886 No, they don't combine; they're too different effects. Copying the creature doesn't copy any equipment attached to the creature.
@@TheCommanderTavern no, like the atk trigger on the sword that gathers lands , if there were multiple of the ishin guys each one would make the atk trigger multiple times ?
nvm i think it wouldnt do anything as myriad would only trigger making those copies and the sword would onky relly be able to grab 2 lands max as when the other ishins hit the battlefield the atk has allready happend so yeah ot dosnt work under the pretens that myriad makes the atk to late for the other sword to trigger multiple times any how. sry for that miss understanding
Damm, the defensive build its spicy, can we get a list???
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
It seems a lot of people were super excited for the potential of a defensive strategy for Isshin. Since I already have the shell for it, I might start working on it soon 👍
