    I am a professional ocarina maker and wanted to give my input to the video. The ocarina is a simple and easy instrument to make, but just as well it can be simple and easy to make a wine, what differentiates one ocarina from another is the time and quality control dedicated to each one. For my customers to have confidence in my work I have to always maintain a quality standard and offer a guarantee on tuning, timbre, sound volume and finish, maintaining the same quality in each ocarina is difficult, because the clay is a material that changes throughout the process of elaboration.

    • @AndyCormierYT
      @AndyCormierYT  Год назад +11

      Exactly! Anybody with hands and a popsicle stick could make a (basic, non-fired) ocarina themselves within an hour and technically meet the definition of an instrument, but it takes significant craftsmanship to make ocarinas at a consistent standard of quality. The fact some brands simply don't value that quality control is a major issue for the perception of the instrument, so thank you for your efforts to ensure quality in your ocarinas!!

    I bought the "forest whisper" from ocarina wind a few years back and the breath curve always seemed a bit of to me. Back then I just wanted to see if I would stick to practicing, before getting a more expensive instrument. Though I do like my ocarina and do not regret my decision, I totally agree that if you are serious about learning the ocarina it is better to get a good plastic one to start.

      It's a great showcase of the playability of an ocarina! A well-designed ocarina (or at least, an ocarina that is natural for *you*) should feel natural and smooth even when you have large jumps in notes, and the high notes should be clear. Song of storms is the perfect song to stress-test this, provided you've practiced with an ocarina enough to intuitively feel what each note should feel like in your breath.
      And, of course, it's the Zelda fan in me :)

    I've got a few Ocarina Wind ocarinas just because they're a cheap way to fill in my collection. Your experience with the dragon tooth model fits my own, it's kinda in tune but very wonky to play. I have the Forest Whisper and Ocean Wave ones that are pretty okay. Almost as good as my STL ocarinas. They're basically my go to for when I want a ceramic with me but would worry about breaking them. Quality control is most likely random at best, which has been my experience with low cost Chinese made instruments on Amazon in general. I have an amazingly good soprano saxophone that I will be first to admit that I won the cheap instrument lottery on, but I also have a cheap tenor that kinda proves the soprano was a fluke.

    • @AndyCormierYT
      @AndyCormierYT  Год назад

      Thanks for the additional insight! My biggest issue is that if there are quality control issues greater than a small %, I simply won't buy from or recommend the brand. For example, STL has very low % quality control issues (I've seen a case where someone's ocarina didn't have a hole in the mouthpiece making it unplayable), but I recommend them *sometimes,* since they do have the best-priced OoT replica and some great instruments in their selection
      In the case of OcarinaWind, I only see them as, like you said, a cheap way to fill a collection. They're definitely pretty ocarinas, but I absolutely cannot trust their ocarinas as musical instruments given the quality control problems

    • @thejubetube279
      @thejubetube279 10 месяцев назад

      Jubos don't break. You can run a pickup truck over them and they'll still play fine. Yet as touch as they are, they are lighter and easier to hold than ceramics.

    I just got my Ocarina Wind ‘forest whisper’ in the mail today. I’m actually pretty happy with it I got one ‘used - like new’, ended up being like $23. I’m happy at that price. I had to put a flashlight to it to notice that ‘seam’ you were talking about, so maybe I got lucky with a good one. High notes seem to come pretty easily, but low notes seem to be pretty picky about how much breath they want. Everything plays well and in tune enough that if I can’t learn on this, I have no reason to get a more expensive one, but I think I’ll enjoy it. I mostly play stringed instruments, the only woodwind I played regularly before this is a penny whistle, but they are fairly diatonic in nature. This is much quieter and less shrill than a penny whistle, I’m pretty excited!

      @AndyCormierYT  Год назад +2

      I'm glad you got a good model!
      These ocarina brands CAN make decent ocarinas that play in tune, but the bigger issue is quality control. If there's a high chance the ocarina has problems + these are the most affordable ocarinas on the market, there's a VERY high chance this is someone's first ocarina, they get a bad one, then they give up on learning the instrument. That said, I'm very happy for anyone who gets a problem-free instrument from them

    • @johnnymcgeemusic
      @johnnymcgeemusic Год назад +1

      @@AndyCormierYT haha I spoke a bit too soon. Once I started playing a bit more complicated stuff I realized how out of tune the upper register was. C through G played in perfect tune, but from A and up it got progressively more flat to the point that high F was Closer to D# than E, let alone F.
      So very much not ‘problem free’, but I’m good at solving problems, and proceeded to meticulously bore out the bad holes with sand paper until everything was up to pitch and playing correctly. It took some doing, but now it actually is a decent instrument and I was finally able to play my favorite Zelda tunes lol.
      I played too much though and that strawfire smell kinda makes me sick now, so I ended up ordering one of your recommended plastic ones anyways 😅🫣

      @@thejubetube279 I looked on your site, but I'm not very familiar with pendant style ocarinas 😞 I like transverse style ocarinas more, because they're the classic ocarina shape, like the one from Zelda, and the linear fingering pattern of transverse ocarinas is easier for me than the pendant fingering pattern. 12-hole transverse style ocarinas are my favorite 😊

I'm not looking to play in front of an audience or anything just wanted a fun little instrument to learn and toot around with when I have idle time or my adhd brain is bouncing around. Nice to know the times it sounds off it's not necessarily me though.

    I bought one of those dark blue ceramic Zelda OoT replicas a week ago, but not from Amazon, even worse, from AliExpress 😂. I did it because it was only $8 bucks so I figured I'd buy it even if it ended up being a decoration.
    Well, to my surprise, even though it's NOT in tune, it's pretty much in tune with itself and it plays all the notes just fine. I'm learning on it and I'm already playing a lot of songs.

It has a "C-13" stamped on the mouth-part. Another stamp says "Made in Austria". Another word I can hardly make out is "Vianna" in that same gold painted oval stamp on the bottom. Sorry but I am not good a getting a picture on my cell phone and then get it into my computer so I can post it. The nose and tail both have a similar gold flower-like appointment painted on. Jubo offers woodgrain models in rosewood, burl and redwood. You should never buy a wood pendant ocarina because once you play you can't get the moisture out of the inner cavity. Eventually it will warp and crack. Not with a Jubo. Comes with a 10 year guarantee.

      To all the reviewers here. A Zelda ocarina is better suited for "Legend" repertory. The Jubo only plays an octave so you're better off with a Zelda model. But to be fair, when buying off the internet you have no idea how these Zelda instruments play. Jubos are guaranteed for 10 years and you can return them for any reason whatsoever for your money back. We've made over 7000 and no one has ever returned one as of this writing.
