Hi Deanne, love your tutorials. That thing about not moving your waist when learning shoulder hooping - I get my class to sit on the floor for some of the practice, it literally makes it impossible to move your waist and so all the focus goes to what you are doing with higher up. People have told me it helped get a feel for the shoulder movements :)
I've been hooping for over a year now and have been a fast learner with everything but chest and shoulder hooping. My style totally makes me want to learn it but it's really hard for me to isolate the area. I've also found that the sitting trick works best for me just to learn how to access those muscles.. Hopefully I'll get the muscle memory down well enough to FINALLY learn how to hoop on the chest.
It is encouraging for me to see that I am not the only one having trouble shoulder hooping, so the other comments help with my frustration level and your videos help me to learn. You are one fabulous instructor, and I have watched quite a few tutorials from different people. Yours are the best!
Hi Deanne! First of all I want to thank you to the moon and back for your tutorials and your wonderful presence!!! They have been such a big help and inspiration to me! You totally rock! I am a brand new hooper (at least, brand new in the sense that I am FINALLY picking up the hoop every day and trying to learn learn learn!). This video in particular helped me get shoulder hooping (I haven't quite nailed it, but I can keep the hoop up and going for a few rotations at least, so that's something). In a couple of weeks, I will have the $ to get your hoop lovers bundle and I can't wait! In the meantime, I've been watching tons of your tutorials as well as some tutorials from other great hoop instructors out there to keep myself learning and hoopspired :-) I have a question for you (and any other hoopers with insight!) that I have not been able to find any sort of answer to in my research (there's no hooping community near me so there's no one I can ask directly, unfortunately). I work a fair amount so I am trying to schedule my hooping in so that I get in AT LEAST an hour or two of practice & play per day. But I am what I would call....OCD on the laziness cusp. I have never been great at teaching myself new things. I SOOOOOO want to get this though! I know I need to practice practice practice. And I know I need to give it time and patience. But I also know myself, and I know that as a total novice, if I don't have some sort of blueprint for how to move forward, I may get discouraged easily. In other words, in order to discipline myself, I have to make a plan and stick to it until I am comfortable enough to branch out. I am struggling with making a plan for my daily practices because I am doing this all on my own and I don't even know where to begin! I practice a handful of tricks per day and try to get in some free play/dance. The free play/dance is fine, I have made more improvement there than I expected was possible and that's where I usually get my confidence boost and find my happy place. But I'm feeling a little lost as I try to practice and drill new tricks and moves. It's not JUST because I'm not good at them yet, I know that will come with time and muscle memory development, it's mostly because I don't really know how to practice. I don't think I've ever had to practice anything in that way before. Not since I was too young to remember. No background in sports/dance/any sort of discipline here :-/ So my question is, what sort of tips can you give a beginner on how to structure practices (as well as what to focus on in those random "oooo i have some time"/stop-drop-and-hoop moments) so that I get the MOST out of what I'm doing with the little time I have? Since you're a great teacher, I figure you would be the person to ask. And I know it won't always be perfect, and I know there's probably a million ways to go about it. But I'm looking for a little guidance/examples/advice. What worked for you waaaaayyy back when you were first starting out? Again thank you SO much for...well...you. You make me feel like it's possible. And I'm not always so easily convinced. :-) Cheers!
Your tutorials are incredible. You explain things and break them down in a way that is much easier to follow. Still trying to get the shoulder thing down... haven't mastered it yet but your videos give me hope I can do it soon. Thanks!
Hi Deane! I absolutely love your videos and am so grateful you have uploaded them for us on youtube! My whole hula hooping experience and progression has been revolved around your videos! I can hoop on all parts of my body and kick up from the ground. I have a few intermediate tricks up my sleeve thanks to you! I have been struggling with shoulder hooping though. My hoop always travels to my neck after about 8 rotations. I'm sure this video will improve my shoulder hooping as it has my entire practice. Thank you :)
I spent all day yesterday practicing and trying to figure out why I can't shoulder hoop, and then you posted this video! It's like you're speaking directly to me! Lol! Love you, Deanne. Thanks!
Yaaaaaay! I'm attempting to learn shoulder hooping in my second current and was having such trouble. This helped a LOT for troubleshooting... Thanks so much! Starting to really get it. :) You are awesome. Thank you for your offerings.
You read my mind! I have been having a heck of a time with shoulder hooping (and I have been hooping for a year and a half... and still can't shoulder hoop!). This is JUST what I needed. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!
Such a great video for a beginner! Perfect pace & clear instructions. I've been wondering where I was going wrong and turns out I was doing all 5 things!! So much closer now. Thanks!
Today is the first day I ever seriously tried to shoulder hoop. I watched this video and another of yours before I even attempted it. I went around all day doing the exercises without a hoop to loosen my upper body. It took about 30 mins for me to get it and keep it up for a bit. These videos help so much
I'm able to keep it going on my shoulders now turning in a slow circle! I can chest hoop and rotate arms in and out standing still, so hoping to get to shoulder hooping standing still soon! I love your videos. Also working on leg hooping haha
Thank you thank you thank you for your great videos! I've been trying everyday for like two weeks to shoulder hoop and I just couldn't get it, then today I got it!! It was like magic! I credit it to practice and watching your vids over and over, lol.
I've been watching your videos for so long and I absolutely LOVE you! Thank you for helping me feel empowered and free to fully self express with hooping. I am so incredibly grateful for you! Keep spreading the love, and please, keep inspiring the world, sister!
Been wanting to try shoulder hooping for a long time :) It was thanks to you that I'm able to chest hoop, so now it's time to get shoulder hooping down too! You rock Deanne:) Such a hooperstar! ;)
Prior to seeing this video, technically I "could" shoulder hoop, but my arms looked really stiff. The tip about placing your finger tips on your thighs really helped solve that problem!! Thanks Deanne!
Wait I love you... I've been trying to chest hoop on and off for like a yr now, I heard a girl say she learned what she knew from your vids at a show so I watched this video, tried to chest hoop... n bam!! I finally could!!! Hahaa thanks so much!!! :):)
She’s pushing the hoop forward with her left shoulder, and pulling it back with her right shoulder. ( or perhaps that backwards because of camera stuff, but still, shoulders) Once you get this push, pull thing with your shoulders the other chest and back movements begin to come in naturally. If anyone is having trouble, Jess Wagstrom has an awesome tutorial explaining this!
Question for you Deanna! First, I love all of your videos and I have learned so much from you but where exactly can I buy a good pried hula hoop? I love your hoops and I'm trying so hard to learn!
I have been hooping for about 5 months I'm 13 and I can shoulder hoop, spiral up, kick ups, I can bring the hoop up and down using my body, and some other tricks I don't know the name of. Today we have a play and our tracker assigned me one of the three narrators. When your a narrator in his class you can be anything. So I'm going to be a crazy person who hula hoops while reading her lines.
thank you for posting this. #5 is definitely my problem. do you have a video of you doing it in slow motion? for some reason I can't seem to get the motion down, my shoulders automatically want to do a shimmy shimmy move and the hoop just bounces right off and falls. :(
Shimmy is definitely the way to go. I'm battered and bruised from my mega heavy hoop and have ordered a dance hoop. Yay! But I just have to know, Deanne, is there a hoop you can't do? Have you failed shoulder hooping with a bad hoop? ;-)
All this time I was blaming my boobs for not being able to shoulder hoop. I gave up until I saw this video. I have hope ! I was able to do 5 rotations right off the bat with your tips. Thanks ! Now I know I will get this. Mahalo
Do other people tend to push with more momentum with one arm more than the other. I try to make contact with the hoop on my chest, both shoulders , and back but find that Im pushing more with one side, I kinda look like Im dry heaving LOL!
Something must be seriously wrong with my awkward self. I’ve watched every shoulder and chest hooping tutorial available and I still just can’t get more than one rotation and that’s because it’s the first rotation when I give it the beginning whirl. Ugh.
Keep going! How are you getting on with this? I was in your position last year. Ann Humphries shoulder hooping video helped me a lot. Chest hooping, Jess Wagstram's video helped me.
This was so helpful! I can now shoulder hoop for about 10 seconds versus like 2 haha. Gonna keep on practicing!
Hi Deanne, love your tutorials.

Peter White Yes awesome idea Peter! I do the same for hoopers I am teaching, really helps to become aware of what is happening with the body!
Thank you! You're encouraging me to be patient and keep practicing.

Yay! Perfect timing!!! I was doing everything wrong (except hoop size, I have a 105cm enormous hoop).
Prior to seeing this video, technically I "could" shoulder hoop, but my arms looked really stiff. The tip about placing your finger tips on your thighs really helped solve that problem!! Thanks Deanne!

Where did you get the fitness hoop you showed in the beginning please? I'm having a hard time finding reasonable shipping prices for Australia :/
All this time I was blaming my boobs for not being able to shoulder hoop. I gave up until I saw this video.
I have hope ! I was able to do 5 rotations right off the bat with your tips. Thanks ! Now I know I will get this.
