To all the detractors of the cost and time it takes to make this: it's not about that. It's about the pleasure of creating something useful from something most people would throw away as scrap.
There is joy in being a creator rather than always a consumer. A one off like this will bring joy for years, if you wan't shop bought watch some video of people shopping.
Its easy, 12 hrs with the scrub pad, 4 hours with the wire brush, 6hrs w/rotary brush, 10hrs w/sandpaper and voila. you've got a brand-new pan and some sort of metal poisoning.
To each his own. I'll just wash my frying pan with soap and water and reuse it. Old frying pans are best because they're seasoned or cured, meaning they will be stick- resistant, non corrosive and they heat easily. This process takes a long time or years so once you reached that point, never throw that pan away.
I love this lamp. Not only does it look great, you crafted it yourself instead of buying something similar in the store. Great way to repurpose things. I've done it rather than buy new.
Great idea for recycling old pans! I have several that would work really well including an old wok. The rope trick was genius threading the cord through. I wonder if you could thread a soft metal rod or thick wire through the rope to make a desk lamp that bends, it would look really cool as you would only see the rope supporting the light.
But then it takes up space in the landfill. Maybe give it to someone else who wants to recycle it if you don’t want to yourself. I would gladly take it.
judith I like your idea better birds need a place to bath in our urban areas. I would be weary of using a lamp with rope like that I would like to see a UL report on something that could burn down my house.
I was Electrician and customers even asked me to hang a lamp made of rattan :) While using LED bulb may be safe but when someone will change LED for 60 W incandescent bulb it may be risky.
We live in a throw away world now. Look at all the trash in our land fills and oceans. Doing even a little recycling like he has done makes a difference.
Dan Young metal like in a frying pan is valuable as it can be melted down and put to another use. No company would ever just discard something like it for the sake of throwing it out. Furthermore the pan has wasted potential in the video. It could go and be melted down for something with purpose, but instead it’s being turned into a crappy lamp shade.
You have scrubbed the frying pan so well that it looks new aluminum pan. So why not reattach the handle and start using it as a regular frying pan again?
Free??? Maybe HE had all the things needed and the tools, but most of us don't. Definitely not free, and definitely not the idea of upcycling. Upcycling is making something different from something you already have WITHOUT having to buy more stuff.

Miss Elmyra .
