  • Scale insects are common in natural and managed landscapes and can be significant pests under some conditions. Here, we will discuss the lifecycle and basic ecology of scale insects common on conifer and deciduous trees in the Colorado Front Range, with an emphasis on species that are pests to homeowners. We will address diagnostics, treatment efforts, and prognosis for trees heavily impacted by pest scales. We will also consider diseases transmitted by scale insects.
