I have a Sonic Silver ‘95 R33 GTR (running around 440bhp). I absolutely love driving it, it is and always has been my favourite of the Skyline GTR models in terms of how it looks. I think whatever mods have been done to the car in this video have possibly ruined it’s handling. I am running TEIN lowering springs on standard shocks and it handles lovely, it is stiff but still pretty smooth and very predictable even with the HICAS still functioning. I respect and appreciate all models of course but the R32 and R34 are too boxy and un-aerodynamic for my taste. I’ve had mine 10 years and it is the love of my life.

This might be controversial, but for me this is easily the best looking of the 3 and the 2nd best looking Skyline of them all. My profile picture makes my views on the best looking one pretty obvious! Sure it wasn't the game changer that the R32 was or the last of the great trilogy that the R34 was so it'll never have as much of a legendary status, but it's still a proper GT-R. Great video. Most coilovers on these are either too harsh (or too old and in need of refresh) for uk roads. It’s also common for spring rates to Be mismatched. And many also require insane speed and commitment to display the traits they are famous for which is a bit daft on public roads. But all generations can feel special even at low speeds if set up well, as the 32 demonstrated. Thanks for these videos all the cars look great.
I definitely think you need to drive another few R33's, like you say it very much depends on the modifications, certainly worth trying one without coilovers!
The double edged sword that is 90's JDM cars. The fervid, nostalgic fondness vs the lunacy of current asking prices. I never thought I'd see the day where a 575M or 599 GTB could be bought for less than an R34 Skyline. And that's before I mention the Asda savings in the back pocket.
Here in Japan you can buy a gate Murcie, 550 Maranello, and a McLaren 12C for the price of a BNR34. Some of the rarer cars are selling for more than the cost of a LFA
Same thing air-cooled Porsches did a few years before the JDM price surge (and E30 M3s to a lesser extent). I think some of them have "jumped the shark" and the prices are now only a reflection of the rarity and not of the actual driving experience, but when there are a limited number that is only shrinking because they're not produced anymore, and the amount of people that want one far exceed the amount available, that's what happens. Sigh.
@@jsquared1013 Such a melancholic truth! I can't help but wonder where we'll end up next. Sport cars (in my youth) were many things to many people -form, function and finances. Those who could not afford an RX-7 (like myself), were fortunate to still have entry with an MX-5. The little brother to the big. Obviously they are of no comparison where top trumps is concerned, but with one exception. How they made you feel as a driver. And it was that passion above all else, to all enthusiasts. Sadly, that is no longer the case.
Just wanted to say I do love to watch your videos. A shaky camera is the least of my concerns as I’m more interested in how well you communicate the way you feel driving the car. This is hands down best channel for this on RUclips. Thank you for your hard work and God Bless.
It is definitely the most sedate looking of the 3, and when you consider most owners/enthusiasts are late 20's / early 30's, so they are usually looking for a more aggressively designed car. Whereas the sedate looking version allows you to enjoy yourself as you get older, without feeling slightly ridiculous like one might in a louder car.
It was the fastest car in the Nurburgring when it came out that year and the only model to actually feature a bespoke variant in the form of the 400R. The 33 is more GT, with its extra cabin room whereas the 32 is an outright racer.
The Nurburgring lap times are irrelevant and only used as a marketing tool to sell more units. Its not a true test of vehicle superiority as there 4 different tracks here where the BNR34 wiped the floor with the BCNR33
@@KeenanStyles the Nurburgring time is relevant because it is one of the few tracks that has such a wide variety of corners, straights, elevation changes, etc on a closed course. It's not the end-all for performance, just like a 0-60 time or a skidpad number doesn't tell the whole story, but it's a very good indicator. Of course the R34 was faster on many courses than the R33 (he didn't even say that it _wasn't_ , just that it was the _first_ to that particular milestone). R34 was a later car and obviously they made improvements! Just like all sportscar manufacturers do for new generations of car. But the jump in performance from R32 to R33 was a bigger jump than R33 to R34 (in terms of front suspension geometry, chassis stiffness, electronic controls, etc). As was the case with most generational successions around that time frame, as CAD/FEA/CFD tools became significantly more effective and engineers were able to make large leaps in chassis stiffness and improved suspension geometry without much weight gain. Then as time went on, those returns diminished. Examples of this are the leap from GC to GD STi compared to GD to GR (if you don't factor in the switch to rear double-wishbone but look mostly at chassis structure and such), the leap from Z32 to Z33 being more significant than Z33 to Z34, the differences in M3s from E36 to E46 vs E46 to E90 (again, not factoring in the switch from I-6 to V8 but focusing on chassis and interior and etc), Porsche 993 to 996 vs 996 to 997 (although 964 to 993 was arguably a larger change than even the switch to watercooling!), and many other examples. Not many cars these days can boast of a 75% or 100% or 120% increase in torsional rigidity from one generation to the next, yet that's what was happening during generational changes in the 90s.
The R33 Series doesn't deserve any hate at all. Back in its days It made a lot of R32 owners (waiting to upgrade) and fanboys unhappy because it was so radically different from the outside, with its rounded shape and longer wheelbase. Nissan reverted a lot of that when releasing the R34 and gained a lot of former R32 owners back. It has a rightful place in the line of GTR heritage.
Owned a r32 and an r33. Where I'm from, we see the r34 as the odd one that went completely blocky in styling keeping only the round tail lights. At the same time, the r34 was the next one to perform beyond it's specs like the r32.
Jay you need to drive this car again once its tuned and you can rev it out, the R33 is my favorite. This one might need a new set of coilovers and alignment if its darting around, it should rip around the corners with ease more like the R32 you just tested.
Suspension comment was spot on. It was designed to go fast and there it is perfect. Same with range rover sport. Stupidity hard ride, but once you go off road you know immediately that you drive on honey! Perfection!

I have two friend who drive their skylines daily. First one has r33 gts25 with 70k km and he did 20k in one year without issues. Second friend has r34 gtt with 200k km and he did 10k in one year, with basic maintenance. As long as you keep them stock they are rock solid cars.
11:40 I sympathize with that blue hatchback, while commuting to work at dawn for 3 years-ish I had a white R33 GTS on my tail almost every single day. Me sporting a gawdy red Legacy B4 I guess this person started recognizing me because they didn't overtake me until we reached the open part of the road (car has plenty of power judging how fast they did catch to me after the turns plus almost not traffic at 4am in a backroad of a third world country), it was until I bought a Focus (hence the blue hatchback part) and driving it with the stock exhaust to notice how good that car did sound while engine braking while going down the steep hills near my town
I hated the HICAS on my '89 GTS-t. When I first arrived on Okinawa I knew I wanted a Skyline but my wife told me I had to have the family car. And there on the lot was 4-door R32 GTS-t with a 5-speed lol. I bought her a Toyota supercharged MR-2 so she could have the sports car. When my car had a catastrophic gearbox failure I bought a '93 non-turbo GTS and loved it to death. Without the HICAS the rear felt more planted in corners,
Good stuff. Nice review and great to see someone creating well constructed content and treating peoples cars with respect! Nothing has the front end feel and driving experience of a 32. Just building a group A car myself.
Surprised the chap who lent you his at short notice, didn't get a 'he must be good because his name is James' reference! Liking the comparison so far, thank you.
The reason you are getting a push from the rear is the transfer case clutch setup is worn so not enough transfer goes to the front wheels. If the lights are on the dash for the HICAS then the G sensor is gone and its running rear wheel only. Its not the character of the car.
Used to see a few GTIRs about my way years ago. Always liked them proper little weapons. Shame the gearboxes were weak and the SR motors don't make a nice sound
@@chappy2121 I seen one today the owner didn't get tho memo about weak gearbox it launched wellhard. They don't seem as fast as they did back then but good to see it being used properly
@@chappy2121 I had one, sounded great with a Mongoose exhaust. The gearbox was fine too, I think abuse killed off some which may have contributed to the ‘chocolate’ gearbox saying. I regret selling mine so much. It had 280bhp (rolling road) and was quick, even to today’s standards.
Aren't all 3 skyline's going to have different suspension and exhaust systems from stock. Likely since they all have modified engines anyway. I feel like the comparisons are going to be fairly redundant if they aren't original
Yeah, a comparison of these 3 cars is more a comparison of the mods and the modder rather than the cars at this point. For example if one has HICAS and the other has a delete then its already rather pointless because with/without HICAS makes them drive so differently. I have an R33 GTR which was stock when I got it apart from a big FMIC, what it was and how it drove then to what it’s like now; it feels like a different car entirely. I suppose it’s a good segway into the joys of modification though.
The reason for that is that it is _extremely_ difficult to find a GT-R that hasn't been modified. Same with just about all of the 90s JDM cars, and even with modern stuff like the Evo and STI and R35 😆
Nice video James. I do believe driving standard examples of each car would make the comparison much more balanced, though obviously sourcing unmolested examples of all three is a hard task in itself. For me a Midnight Purple R33 Nismo 400R is the one, just a shame they only made 44 and are now upwards of £250,000!
J's great videos I tend to save them like you best last piece of a meal so looking forward to the 34 and this series. Also a warning to any JDM Brothers out there have a Civic Type R fn2 and my cat was stolen off it so be aware that they're going for other cars. I think there was some horses missing from this guy's set up so you got a feel for him it's probably not set up properly yet. To be fair I like all three but I'm looking forward to the 34.👍
Definitely the best looking. The styling is well refined and everything about the body work just blends together so nicely. The 32 and 34 look so disjointed, like parts bin cars.

@@TacPrecision Mine doesn't have one and I'd say its about half of the R33 GTR's i know don't have them. If you go on the GTR Registry you can see a lot of them weren't spec'd with rear wipers, especially the earlier ones.
Really enjoy your vids but if I can make one simple request then that would be to have the intro and end music volume reduced to a calmer level. Compared to your narrative volume the music just booms and is deafening when listening through earphones. 👍
My fav Gtr is the R33 period. The history of Granturismo was made with this car and not the R34. By the time the R34 came out, Granturismo was already a global game
The best R chassis is the R35 but I disagree with you there. The BNR34 is a much more refined car in every way minus the interior quality. I guarantee if you get a chance to drive one around for a week you wouldn't feel that way anymore. It's superior to the BNR32 being a successor but when it comes to the BNR34 and R35 its not a contest. Of course the BNR34 is way overhyped and overpriced for what it is but amongst its generations it is by far the 2nd best.

Gotta, say the R33 has always been my fave.
I've always seen the R33 as the most aggressive looking one of the 3. I've always seen the R32 as the most sedate looking.
That intro really fills your confidence when you first drive it...
6:18 OMG it sounds GLORIOUS!
The perfect skyline spec for me!
I like the look of the 33 the best, good stuff as usual
I’ve always thought that if specced correctly, this is definitely the MEANEST looking skyline
I think this has been the best series you have done and I love the r33 gtr
Loving the skyline saga mate💪
It sounds epic!
Who on earth could hate the legendary R33 GTR?!! Dream car as an 18 year old from playstation 1 days! lol
No GTR deserves hate.. Ever.
Yup. End of.
Owned a r32 and an r33. Where I'm from, we see the r34 as the odd one that went completely blocky in styling keeping only the round tail lights. At the same time, the r34 was the next one to perform beyond it's specs like the r32.
Favorite of the 32-33-34 series. Well, the body style at least. Dream car would be one with switched out modern running gear in that odd purple.
Jay you need to drive this car again once its tuned and you can rev it out, the R33 is my favorite. This one might need a new set of coilovers and alignment if its darting around, it should rip around the corners with ease more like the R32 you just tested.
That car sounds epic, brings back memories 👍
Best looking Skyline in my opinion.
@@charu1473 I'm into most things...
Suspension comment was spot on.
It was designed to go fast and there it is perfect.
Same with range rover sport. Stupidity hard ride, but once you go off road you know immediately that you drive on honey! Perfection!
I love mine r33, someday i'll also buy gt-r version and there will be two in my garage :D
I’ve been looking into buying a r33 how reliable is it if I were to drive it almost daily no modifications
@@Vystoh I don't drive mine r33 daily. It is stock 80k km car, just exhaust and fmic, it did 270km on the dyno. I did about 10k km in 3 years with one trackday without a single problem ;) just basic maintenance like oil change, timing belt change, and one small leak from cam cover. I have two friend who drive their skylines daily. First one has r33 gts25 with 70k km and he did 20k in one year without issues. Second friend has r34 gtt with 200k km and he did 10k in one year, with basic maintenance. As long as you keep them stock they are rock solid cars.
The R33 reminds me of american big power sedans like the Pontiac G8 and Pontiac GTO. Maybe even the Ford Taurus SHO or Dodge Charger.
Without the HICAS the rear felt more planted in corners,
R33 is the king of Skylines because of two simple things.
1. The Nismo 400R
2. The Nismo GT-R LM
Ok thats just like saying the BNR34 is the king of Skylines because the Z-tune, S-Tune, and N1.
Good stuff. Nice review and great to see someone creating well constructed content and treating peoples cars with respect! Nothing has the front end feel and driving experience of a 32. Just building a group A car myself.
It looks and sounds epic!!!!😍😍😍
Another brilliant and honest review, many thanks for that.
Cracking job listing the mods jay 👌 and my god those intake noises 😍😍😍
Surprised the chap who lent you his at short notice, didn't get a 'he must be good because his name is James' reference!
Liking the comparison so far, thank you.
The reason you are getting a push from the rear is the transfer case clutch setup is worn so not enough transfer goes to the front wheels. If the lights are on the dash for the HICAS then the G sensor is gone and its running rear wheel only. Its not the character of the car.
I love the Rays wheels
I love R33 GT-Rs!! I love its sleek looks and it's my favorite car with the same age as I am!
Any chance of seeing Sunny/Pulsar GTi-R?
seen one of these yesterday on a motorway in Ireland. 👍
The R33 has always been my favorite of them all
Aren't all 3 skyline's going to have different suspension and exhaust systems from stock.
Not many people cover the DR30. If you do that one, you may get a lot of hits. And no one does the R31. I don't even know what those are like.
That r32 is also stunning though
Nice video James. I do believe driving standard examples of each car would make the comparison much more balanced, though obviously sourcing unmolested examples of all three is a hard task in itself. For me a Midnight Purple R33 Nismo 400R is the one, just a shame they only made 44 and are now upwards of £250,000!
Oh boy, if only they were still worth £250,000. 😓🤣
My favourite of the 3 by a long way
Love the intro
J's great videos I tend to save them like you best last piece of a meal so looking forward to the 34 and this series. Also a warning to any JDM Brothers out there have a Civic Type R fn2 and my cat was stolen off it so be aware that they're going for other cars. I think there was some horses missing from this guy's set up so you got a feel for him it's probably not set up properly yet. To be fair I like all three but I'm looking forward to the 34.👍
The R33 is my favourite 👌
Gotta say the sound's my favourite out of the 3 cars.
Definitely the best looking. The styling is well refined and everything about the body work just blends together so nicely. The 32 and 34 look so disjointed, like parts bin cars.
I had a mint R33 GTST with a rising sun stage 1 remap and a steel turbo, Totally rot free as it had only been in the Uk for 4 years, My brother did a back to bare metal repaint in Nismo red, Sold it about 7 years ago for 4.5K! Wish i hadn't, It's worth about 15K+ now! 😭
Looks absolutely fantastic!
The R33 looks nicer to me than the R34, fewer curves.
Great quality video, excellent 👍🏻
When the original gran turismo 1st came out, there was only 1 car: r33 gtr. 32 seemed obsolete already
I like the r33 but the r32 remains my favorite because of the styling
R33 was always my fav
R 32 SHAPE IS MY FAVOURITE!!
Love my '97 v-spec
For me the R33 has always been my favourite, just the best all rounder looks wise and for one you won't be called Paul Walker if you tell someone you have one.
Never been called Paul Walker even once 🤷🏾♂️
Yes more anti social but how can you be angry at that noise!
Tell me about it! Sounds so good!
That car sounds bloody beautiful, jesus
3:55 - sold! Want one
Who doesn’t like the r33 it is such a sexy car
This is always my favourite. Shame it's another car ruined by 'unknown brand' coilovers.
A lot respect for those cars in 2020 still
Great video Jay I really enjoyed it 👍 I’m looking forward to the R34 video. That’s my favourite Skyline.
No rear windscreen wiper is either a very rare option to delete or an N1 chassis - either way not something you see very often!
Mine is a ‘95 R33 GTR V-Spec originally from Japan, and it does not have the rear window wiper 😉
@@creamlad if it is white then it is very probably an N1 chassis, they didn’t make many of those.
@@TacPrecision No, the rear wiper was an optional extra. Not specific to the N1
@@TheFactoryJackson Sooo like I said, a rare option to delete then?
@@TacPrecision Mine doesn't have one and I'd say its about half of the R33 GTR's i know don't have them. If you go on the GTR Registry you can see a lot of them weren't spec'd with rear wipers, especially the earlier ones.
Really enjoy your vids but if I can make one simple request then that would be to have the intro and end music volume reduced to a calmer level. Compared to your narrative volume the music just booms and is deafening when listening through earphones. 👍
Feeling poked, from the rear end, is not always a bad thing.
R33 has always been my fave
WOW, it does SHOUT!
best sounding turbo car all time
My fav Gtr is the R33 period.
The history of Granturismo was made with this car and not the R34.
By the time the R34 came out, Granturismo was already a global game
r33 gtst most enjoyable car i own, gc8 wrx close runner up but a rear end that slaps you in the face every once in a while gets my gold
watch me get shot down with this comment ..........
The R33 is my favourite of the R chassis .... and imo the best R chassis
I agree ☝🏻
The best R chassis is the R35 but I disagree with you there. The BNR34 is a much more refined car in every way minus the interior quality. I guarantee if you get a chance to drive one around for a week you wouldn't feel that way anymore. It's superior to the BNR32 being a successor but when it comes to the BNR34 and R35 its not a contest. Of course the BNR34 is way overhyped and overpriced for what it is but amongst its generations it is by far the 2nd best.
0:10 the sign of a true enthusiasts car!😂👍
R33 is my favorite of the bunch
you should get a mic setup under the bonnet, noriyaro did this before on a random drifting video and it works well when you splice the audio together with random comentary
"Street's closed, pizza boy."
