- For a newborn, what is the normal stool pattern? How many times a day should the baby pass the motion, and is this correct? Should the parents be alarmed if the baby doesn't pass motion for 2 days? What is the criteria sir, and can you tell us about the normal pattern?
Newborn babies need to pass their first stool within the first 24 hours. If at all the baby has passed stool on the uterus itself, that is, the meconium, then we don't expect it outside.
But if the baby didn't pass the first motion, we expect it within 24 hours. If it doesn't pass within 24 hours, then the pediatrician or local neonatologists will take it up. Sometimes it could be a small meconium plug, or it could be a small or big issue, which they will take care of.
