I remember back in school, my professor told us that yawning was meant to keep us alert. This is why other animals also yawn. The idea being that yawning would force us to refocus or wake up when we are suppose to be alert or on watch. When someone does this, others nearby would also do so in the attempt to stay awake as well. This is mostly instinctual.

I was told it was because you're brain didn't have enough oxygen that's why you inhale,

Your professor probably heard it from someone who heard it from someone who heard it from someone else who heard it from someone else who made just enough sense for them to go wow you might be onto something thus began the domino affect of did you know.... in reality though if you really think hard about it. Most of the facts and knowledge we have are based on assumptions not 100% true fact. Based on evidence we have gathered. When a prisoner gets imprisoned we assume they are guilty based on the evidence provided. Essentially all our knowledge is based on educated guesses. Which has a higher accuracy rate then just regular assuming true. However in reality we essentially know nothing. Nothing we have learned or been taught is 100% proven fact or works for everyone and there is no sure fire way to truly prove anything. Essentially we are just guessing our way through life and hoping things work.

Actually the chimp claim is slightly exaggearted. Humans arent that much weaker than chimps. Infact, that study compares chimps and humans of the same size. Since humans are bigger than chimps a bigger human could out perform a chimp in absolute terms.
But yes, your statment about endurance is true. Upright walking is much more energy costly than all fours for animals like chimps. Our smaller muscles help mitigate that

I like the theory that yawning was to communicate to the group that it’s ok to sleep, it makes sense for us as social creatures to have traveled in large groups, and with no (official or found) way to communicate during these times with words, yawning is a good indication and can be a reasonable theory as why it’s contagious to me.
Edit: we’re also closely related to bonobos not just genetically but also mentally when it comes to altruism, if you want a source I recommend reading Bonobo and the Athiest. It’s a great book I read during my primate behavior course in college.

Sleeping allows us to store information and allows our brain to focus on other things other than being conscious. This is why the brain is more active at night. Another reason is our muscles regenerate after exercise and I'd say 98% of the time the regeneration is done in our sleep, it allows the brain the address the various issues that could be dangerous to our survival and therefore fix them while it doesn't have a conflict with consciousness.
Edit: Not proven but I believe that dreams access information that we learned throughout the day or helps you, yourself, address an issue that only a conscious mind can help such as trying to build up confidence and such. Dreams to me are like a debriefing before entering the conscious state.

Sleep can be related to why we charge our cell-phones. My guess is that it regulates the neurons inside our brains
so that we may have greater ease sending our electrical signals to our nerves to move. Dreaming may help us to
disperse with the saved mental imagery, which of course we no longer need. These are just my crazy thoughts...

Dreams are in my experience essentially just sensual manifestations of stuff I happen to think about while asleep, with both conscious and unconscious thoughts feeding off of each other back and fourth.
Sleep also is pretty important for lerning, especially long term stuff so I think it might be a possibility that we do it because of all the neural connections that are being made, strenghtened and changed. If we were awake during all of this it we'd probably have constant seizures, delusions, halluzinations etc.
I can see that kind of looking like schizophrenia although that'd require a link between that and sleep I do not know of any.

  • @TheLoneTerran

There's the theory that our body hair is on it's way out or at now the maximum it'll be again. Hairs are excellent sensory organs, it can be easy to tell when a pest has landed on you. It's small enough to land on the hair but not touch the skin, so feeling a hair move is uncomfortable and you want to scratch or smack at it to push the pest away or off of you. One other theory that's not mutually exclusive is that humans started shedding body hair because it provided shelter for detrimental creatures like ticks and lice. Now there's usually only two areas that get infected with lice.

You can also live without a gallbladder. But since it regulates and moves fat and grease, you , well me, have to be a little more careful about what you eat. You, (i) can get nauseous at times.

Eye color is believed (from what I understand not going to say for certain) to relate to our personality. Darker eyes are supposed to be more aggressive and less sensitive to light. Blue, grey/silver and other light colors are supposed to be more calm, belong to people who are more intelligent and are more sensitive to light.

There may be a connection between people who are dyslexic and also left handed. I don't know if there's been a study about it, but there should be. I would love to know if everyone who has dyslexia is also left handed...

Each of us is a world to the trillions of tiny creatures that share our personal space, inside and out. We give them safe harbor and nourishment, and in return, they can help keep ill creatures at bay and even assist us in getting more nutrition from things we can't digest well with our own facilities. The microbiome is a complex and often surprising part of our lives -- I look forwards to learning more about it, as new research comes in.

And how for them there laughter is a sign of stress.

just because it sounds like laughter as we humans know it does not mean it is laughter the way we use it. it could just be a form of communication for them that has nothing to do with being humored

Yawning is the body's way of adapting to a change in your breathing speed, when you breathe slower than you previously were, you yawn so you can take in extra oxygen to adapt to that change. Same thing for if you breathe faster than you previously were, try it.

    1. This topic an channel's far too interesting for me to even attempt a sarcastic 1, let alone a real 1 😃😆
    2. My yawn turned out to be an inconveniently timed sneeze, ruined 3 seconds of interesting facts from a quirky cartoon! ✊
